Why wouldn't they just make solar towers in a similar fashion too? When the sun is out, it can power a motor to raise a heavy item so it has potential energy. When power costs more or it goes out entirely it could lower the heavy item on a pulley system attached to a generator. Spitballing ideas, but Texas has those water towers all over. Cheers!
