TOUR DU MONT BLANC ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME!

  • Our Tour du Mont Blanc hike is my FAVORITE vlog I've ever made!! (Also the longest.) My friend and I went on a 10-day, 100-mile hiking trek through the Alps and it was amazing. If you're thinking of hiking the TMB, then you NEED this book: amzn.to/2RskxQE. We used it to plan our trek and then carried it with us as a guide the entire time; it was especially helpful when the signage in Switzerland wasn't marked clearly.
    I'm so incredibly thankful to have had this experience with such an awesome friend by my side. We were both reaallllly inexperienced hikers going into this (hadn't even used hiking poles before) so it was quite the adventure!
    The hike we did is called the Tour du Mont Blanc. It circles the highest mountain in the Alps, Mont Blanc, and goes through France, Italy, and Switzerland. We're generally pretty happy and positive people (plus it was hard to get the camera out during the really difficult parts), so the vlog is filled with laughter and smiles, but don't be fooled - these were challenging 7 to 11 hour hiking days for us.
    Hope you enjoy watching this even just a little bit as much as we enjoyed our TMB trek! If you're thinking about hiking the TMB, let me know and I'm happy to share advice from my experience.

    Really enjoyed your video! Was just wondering, at the start you mentioned a fellow hiker found it more difficult than anticipated. Now that you have completed the hike, what is your take on the difficulty of the mont blanc given your experience with hiking?

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  2 роки тому +1

      It was definitely difficult. I was young enough and in shape enough to not have to train beforehand, but I definitely would now that I haven't been as active during the pandemic. If I did it now, I'd start regularly hiking with a weighted backpack beforehand to help get myself ready. There are also sometimes trail options with different levels of difficulty, so you have the choice to choose the hard one or the extremely difficult one that goes to even higher altitude. We chose just the hard ones :)

      Hey Leigh-Anne, my absolute pleasure! Can you both do the Haute Route next? :) I had a great adventure but didn't look quite as good as you two at the end of it, especially as the last 2 days were constant rain!!! The refuges were closed when I did the trek- I started 2nd June x

      Sorry I missed this reply! Haute Route looks awesome but is not on my to-do list currently haha! Oh I didn't realize that they were closed for part of the year, makes sense. Ugh 2 days of rain would be really rough. We got sooo lucky with our weather, we were definitely grateful for it the entire time having heard stories from other people about just how rainy it can get sometimes!

    Question... How much camping did you do, and how much water did you all carry each day?

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  8 років тому +1

      Haha you'll do great!! Boldness and a sense of humor are key ingredients for making a TMB trip a success :) Thank you for watching and leaving a comment, I always find it so cool when this video reaches future TMBers! My friend and I actually stayed at refuges every night because we didn't have camping gear/probably weren't in good enough shape to carry the additional weight of the gear. I'm trying to remember about the water -- I think that we both had two Nalgenes each that we carried with us and then there were usually these "water trough" type things that would turn streams into drinking fountains for hikers that made it really easy to replenish our liquids (plus we would sometimes come across refuges mid-hike where we'd stop for food and liquids). Good luck with your hike!!

    Hi your trip looks AMAZING! i watched your video a couple of times and finally booked my trip...I will be going on July 31st and I'm hoping for warm weather but hopefully still some snow on the mountains as I find that this makes the scenery even more beautiful!!! :) I am wondering how much phone reception you had on the mountains and how much access you had to wifi? my main concern is contacting my family pretty much once per day and just letting them know that I am okay..either via whatsapp or even a phone call. I'm from Canada :)

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  8 років тому +1

      I'm so excited for you!!!!! It's going to be amazing :) I actually didn't have a mobile data plan during my travels in Europe, but most of the refuges we stayed at had wifi. There were just 1 or 2 nights when we didn't have internet access. So for example, even if you don't have wifi at one place in the morning, you'd most likely still have wifi in the evening once you've hiked to a new location. If you're staying in a village or town rather than a more remote location, there's sometimes more than 1 option of where to stay, so you could contact them in advance to make sure the places you're staying have wifi or have someplace nearby where you can access wifi. Good luck with your hike!!

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  8 років тому +1

      +Danny Tasha Hi Danny! I'm American, so flight from the US to Switzerland will be anywhere from $700-1200, depending on what season you go in. Transportation from Geneva to the town in the Alps where we started our hike, Les Houches, will be about $60. My friend and I went the cheapest we could go once there, mainly staying in mountain hostels called refuges instead of hotels, and those are about $45-75/night/person and include a decent breakfast and typically really yummy dinner. Lunch will cost you about $10-20 depending on what country you're in. I'd say it probably cost us about $700 for the 10-day hike once we were there, but it could be much more expensive depending on how luxurious you want your accommodations. We planned our trip using the book The Tour of Mont Blanc by Kev Reynolds, which I'd highly recommend. Good luck planning your trip!!

    What time of the year did you complete the hike? You and your friend are so enthusiastic! Did you ever feel burnt out on the hike? Or did you take any rest days?

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  7 років тому +1

      Our enthusiasm made up for our total lack of experience haha! We did 10 days straight, so there were definitely days that we were really tired. Later in the hike, when we did our freezing cold lake jump, that was to shock our systems and help our tired bodies complete the hike that day. People typically take between 7-14 days to complete the hike, so you could definitely add in some rest days and take your time on completing the tour and just have it be closer to two weeks. Thanks for watching, happy to answer any additional questions!

    great video - any advice on shortening the hike or doing fewer days? would like to end up in a large enough town after 5-6 hiking to travel at least as far as torino to make it down to the coast of liguria afterwards. am an experienced hiker, but am more concerned about travel logistics to other, bigger cities from the smaller mountain towns...thanks! e.g. end of august, early sept.

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  5 років тому +1

      Hmm I think there are some sections of the TMB that can be cut off by taking a bus from one part to the next. Some parts of the trail are so isolated that it's not possible, but you could figure out where the buses do go and catch those some days to help shorten the trip around. The book we used (seen around 2:10) might have some suggestions for you, it's called Tour of Mont Blanc: Complete Two-way Trekking Guide

    Thanks for posting this! I am doing TMB this summer with my husband and loved the video and how you broke it down by day! Question, did you find yourself needing more long-sleeved shirts than anticipated? I also noticed that you're wearing capri leggings, were you warm enough in that? Thanks again for posting this!

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  8 років тому +1

      +Karen Cryer Thanks so much, Karen! That makes me SO happy that this was helpful to you! Our hike was in late June and most days I was warm enough in capris. It was only on our longer days when we left really early in the morning that I needed my beanie and long pants and long-sleeved shirts, it was usually warm enough by midday to dress lighter, especially during the uphill parts. That being said, we did talk to a local at one point who said that it was unseasonably warm the week that we were there (and we had almost no rain which was also rare) so I'd check the weather a week or so out and pack accordingly. Most important thing is probably bringing appropriate rain gear just in case. Sorry this comment is so long, but another thought just occurred to me: if you're planning to do the more difficult paths on every leg (there are usually at least two options on how to get to the next point) you might need to pack warmer clothes because you'd be going up higher closer to the glaciers at some points. Good luck with your hike, it's going to be amazing!! :)

      It's pretty challenging but you won't need any equipment besides hiking poles and a backpack to carry all your stuff in! I hiked in my tennis shoes but it could be good to also invest in hiking boots. Have fun!!

      Awesome, I wish I could do it again in 2017! Yes, it's possible to camp along the way. We stayed in refuges, so I can't give you specific advice, but when we were planning, we read about that option and then ultimately decided to go with the hostels instead. Good luck with your walk! Good day Leigh-Anne Marie. Thank you for the video. Two part question. (1) Is there any place along the hike where you can leave extra luggage? (2) If yes, do you have a name and how much it cost? Thanks in advance for the response.

      Thanks for watching, Noel! We left our luggage at Gite Michel Fagot in Les Houches, France. It's the hostel where we stayed the night before we began the hike and where we ended our trip. Back in 2015, I believe luggage storage was only one euro a day per person.

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  8 років тому

      People were really friendly at dinners when we ate with everyone at the refuges, so it's easy to make friends along the way! Good luck with your hike!! I mainly used a Nikon Coolpix L830 which runs on AA batteries and sometimes a GoPro. Bigger issue for me than battery life was having multiple memory cards because I took a ton of footage and the WiFi often wasn't good enough for me to upload to my Dropbox account, so I'd just start using a new memory card instead of importing footage and then deleting it.

    • @LeighAnneMarie
      @LeighAnneMarie  8 років тому +1

      We're in pretty good shape and play sports like soccer, but we don't do long hikes like this regularly, so we were usually between 1-3 hours over the estimated time, depending on the difficulty level of the day. That being said, if you're an experienced hiker, I think you could be able to hit the estimated times. A lot of the people around us were going much faster than us haha! Hope you enjoy the TMB and thanks for watching!

      +Leigh-Anne Marie Thanks for the prompt reply! I actually watched your video twice for my research. So thanks for uploading as well. The weather you got was amazing! We are doing this during the first 2 weeks of September. Super excited!
      In terms of experience, I've done inca trail and Kilimanjaro, both of which guided and a lot easier than our 9 day itinerary of TMB. On top of that theres the difference between daypack used vs the 30 pound bag i will be carrying here haha. this will be interesting

I'd never given it any thought before so I just googled why they'd be wearing a bell and found that a cowbell is worn by freely roaming animals in order to scare off any predators. I don't think it's for cuteness, but rather to help keep them safe while they wander in the Alps

      @@LeighAnneMarie Yes, I've read that too, but it is also true that it hurts their ears. It causes deafness and it even interferes with their feeding habits. I understand it's necessary to keep them safe from predators, but there should be another option to guarantee their welfare. I'm sure that animal welfare experts together with farmers and engineers can device a suitable solution for both cattle and farmers, if there is a real interest on animal welfare.

    Hi Leigh, thank you for the video. I do have a simple but highly important question before I decide on a date for the tour. It's the month and the weather surrounding it. What month have you filmed it in the video? It looks sunny and warm. And would you know if in December for example, it would be all snow? Which would make it a lot more challenging i assume. Could you please give me advice on the months to pick? Thank you

      Hi Mark, we went at the very end of June. Everyone said that we were incredibly lucky to have almost no rain and that it was very unusual, so I think we just went on a particularly good week before the crowds of July but with really nice weather. I'm not sure about December weather! We planned our trip using the book The Tour of Mont Blanc: Complete two-way trekking guide by Kev Reynolds and it was really helpful. I don't remember specifically what it said about winter weather, but I bet he has a section that covers it. Good luck with your trip, it's going to be amazing!!

      We followed the Tour du Mont Blanc path, it's a really popular circular route that a lot of people do. We saw a lot of mountain bikers as we were hiking, they would go crazy speeds down rocky hills haha!
