[Tin whistle TUTORIAL] How to play the tin whistle - Gallagher's Frolics (jig)

- This is the first time I try to upload something similar to a tutorial, although people have been asking me for years. What you can see here is (my TIPS) (BTW, click the "Join" button for more videos like this):
- Just by adding some cuts here and there (for emphasis) you no longer sound like a beginner.
- A roll is just a cut followed by a tap and it's a very cool thing (and very usual in Irish trad music).
- See where and how I breathe. After a long note which I shorten OR by skipping the middle note in 3-note groups OR by "breaking" a roll and breathing in the middle of it (in this case you don't do a roll at all).
- I recommend to tongue the first note of a phrase (when you start to play after breathing), by doing something similar to a "ta" with your tongue. You can slur the rest of notes and just tongue the ones you want to emphasize (don't do too much tonguing or it won't sound trad Irish at all).
Sheet music here: thesession.org/tunes/160 (look for the setting that you like).
The tin whistle I used here is Dixon Trad in D (in brass). Affiliate links to buy it:

GREAT format, best I have seen for learning the ornementations. Thanks a lot
Glad you find it useful!
This really helps, please make more! Also would love some theory lessons on tin whistle.
If you're interested in theory on tin whistle, I can suggest you to get into arpeggios, triads and tetrads. They're the best way to approach and master theory on any instrument. Whistletutor did some cool videos about that topic.
Thank you very much. That's a great help for beginner like me.
Glad it's helpful! 😊 More every month if you become a member.
SO nice! I just started couple days ago play whistle because of lovely fast irish songs full of ornaments and this is the best way I found how to learn playing these, actually would be great to have more songs like this, thank you so much TinWhistler!!!
Glad you like it! Thanks!
LOVED it!
Thank you very much for uploading this tutorial. The format is awesome and I appreciate this. I look forward to learning this tune from this video.
You're such a source of inspiration to me! Thank you for your music and for your fantastic tutorials, I have been improving a lot thanks to them!
So glad to hear that, thanks!
You're the Guy. Thank you for the teachings.
This is really nice, thanks!
Really good! Thank you very much!
This is a lovely jig..Thank you
wow, great
Very well played. Love the markings for the cuts and rolls.
One suggestion. I think it would be easier to follow if the red box moved over the music, instead of the music under the red box if that makes sense. The motion blur is making it hard to follow right now :-)
Thanks for making this!
Very interesting suggestion, thanks! I guess the problem in that case would be fitting the whole line on the screen, whereas this way it just moves. But it's true that way it would be easier to see, so I might try it!
And, BTW, there will be one video like this every month for members of the channel (of a certain level) (more info on the Join button). Thanks!
I forgot to mention: In addition to those emphasizing cuts, many times I also tongue those same notes at the same time. This gives the note even more emphasis. You can hear this mostly the second time that I play the tune in this video (the faster version).
Thnx PJ and JJ. Great Tutorial. one of the best on UA-cam. I luv the rhythms you guys have. Especially the Slip jigs Na Ceannabháin Bhána & A Fig for a Kiss you did. Thanks again..
That is really Good Thanks a lot Please keep on doing it is a great way of learning new tunes
Cool. Thank you!!!
Perfekt....please...more tutorial videos ;)
Please more!
this is awesome and a huge help thanks for uploading..slainte 😊
Buenisimo
I like it...great ...l
YAY!!!
perfeito mano, faz todos os videos com a partitura, lento e depois normal... ouvindo ela lenta dá pra entender bem como usar os ornamentos, parabéns!!!
love you from Thailand
Oh my goodness. I love this! I used to go to Irish whistle classes but since I've moved I haven't been able to find one near me and this is great (especially because I'm such a huge fan and I started learning after coming across your video a couple of years ago)! I love the tune too, and would love more content like this in the future 😍
Edit: wasn't aware you had a patreon. I'll go and check it out! Also a quick question - I struggle with keeping the rhythm when I play with lots of ornamentation. Should I be using a metronome?
Edit 2: woo I'm a patron - not much but hopefully a tiny bit more towards your goal! 💚
Thank you! Well, a metronome can be useful to practice, yes. Also, maybe add less ornamentation until you're better at the tune or just practice it more slowly.
@@TinWhistler to be honest I think I'm a little too impatient with it haha. Thanks for the response - going to keep my eyes peeled for your future videos 😍
Would you have sheet music with whistle tabs like in the video?
nice lesson. Im thinking of picking up a low d whistle, and i was wondering if there are and brands you could recommend ?
Probably a Goldie, although I don't have one.
Thanks so much for this lesson! I don't know a tin whistle teacher around here, but my recorder teacher knows a little tin whistle and can help a bit. It is my understanding that you put in the cuts and taps yourself and decide where you want them. This seems a bit overwhelming to me at this time. I assume that's what you do? By the way, I love this song.
Yes, you put cuts wherever you want, changing everything a bit each time if you want. But it's mostly on strong notes/beats for emphasis, or otherwise you can do cuts or taps to separate two notes of the same pitch. Also, put rolls wherever you want too. There's much improvisation in Irish trad.
@@TinWhistler Thank you!
Thanks a lot for the perfect tutorial. Never saw something like this before :-)) Hope that many whistlers join your lessons. Best regards from Germany
Danke, Stefan!
