  • We finished with the barley around the home place.
This means a trip to Big Sandy.
That was the longest road trip in a combine I’ve ever made. Driving through Ft. Benton was a challenge. If I had been thinking, I would have put on my best parade wave.
Supper in the field - just like the old days.

I remember "roading" the combines too. I was the pickup driver pulling the fuel tank. I didn't have a license yet, so my dad put me in between him and my brother on the combines and down the road we would go. We didn't have to go 45 miles, but we farmed my grandpas place and it was about 15 miles. We had to take all the back roads so we wouldn't be on the highway. The combines didn't go as fast as probably the ones you are driving, so it took us 2 hours or maybe more to get there. Plus we didn't unhook headers back then either. We had John Deere 55's and then 95's. The 55's had no cabs and were about as basic as you could get. The 95's had cabs, but the air conditioners didn't work all the time, so none of the comforts you have. We did lunch and supper in the field every day on harvest. My mom made the best fried chicken and peach pie. She would fix that of a morning while we were getting the combines fueled and ready for the day. Harvest was about a 2 week affair and then on to other things like hauling hay and chopping cotton. Life as a farm kid.

I would be lying if I said it wasn’t sometimes the last thing I wanted to do at the end of a 12-13 hour day. However, once I begin pulling the day’s story together, it’s well worth it. (Much like exercise, I guess). It usually takes me an additional 2 hours at the end of the day. I’m so glad people are finding them worthy to watch!

Great to watch! I looked at the map to see exactly where Highwood is in Montana, it looks like a small town. I think it is not far away from Great Falls, I heard this is a very nice city. Although I live in the Netherlands, I think the American towns and cities and the landscapes are really great to see. Due to health reasons I can't travel anymore, but by watching the videos I am able to see something of America! The combines are great to watch! Many greetings from the Netherlands.

Bower was a ranch lady and wrote about late 19th century cowboy life (eg. The ship of the Flying U). Cushman wrote similar novels (eg. Stay away, Joe)

Typically, we aren’t cutting strips. Just here in the Big Sandy area are we cutting strips. All previous fields have been boundaries determined by the ground. As far as acres go, it just depends on the crop, the ground conditions and the truck turn around.
