  • Logan Huntzberger may not be the most popular guy in Stars Hollow, but there's one thing everyone can agree on: he's the perfect match for Rory Gilmore. In this video, we'll explore the reasons why Logan and Rory are meant to be together, and why he's such a misunderstood hero in Gilmore Girls. We'll explore the character's backstory, and why he's such an integral part of Gilmore Girls.

@@zumann874 She didn't actually cheat on Logan with Jess. She went to use him to get even with Logan and backed out. She had her former bad boy served up on a platter and walked away because she loved Logan. Even in the revival, she is still clinging to Logan. Jess was happy to see her in Stars Hollow. But she wasn't happy to be there. If somehow they ended up together, that would be her settling for 2nd choice. Jess deserves better and in the real world, he would have moved on and found someone better.

I think Jess loved the person Rory had the potential to become when he met her... he understood the potential in her and wanted more from and for her. But he also met her at a time when she was still quite motivated and a bit less entitled.
Logan loved her as she was when he met her, and was happy with who she was at that moment... which to be honest she was kind of a spoiled brat at that point. He was also ready to challenge her from time to time but felt perfectly fine with her not pushing herself either.
So in a way I think they both understood differents sides of her.

I always felt the proposal only existed as a way to break them up. The writers wanted Rory to end the show as a single woman, but they neglected to build up to a break up before then, so they had to tack something on. I think if they planned to keep them together, Logan never would have proposed. It existed only for Rory to say no. And for all the reasons some might comment to say why they *should* have broken up, the point is, they *didn't*. In the episode right before they were in a great place.

What I don't understand is why people want to look down on Logan because his family is rich and he was born privileged. This is the family that he was "BORN" into. Why is this a bad thing that he isn't poor and struggling? Like everyone says he realizes that he is privileged, SO WHAT? People are jealous of that? He actually tries to get away from that and go out on his own, make a name for himself. It didn't work in the end because Rory left him and he kind of decided that it wasn't worth it and he stepped in line with what his family had planned for him all along. Logan was a good guy.

A long time ago I heard a theory about relationships that really resonated with me. This theory states that folks want love, stability or adventure, or some combination of those things in a relationship. The combination will vary because of an individual’s personality or background. Also what we want can change as we grow and evolve. For example for much of the series Lorelei wants love and a little adventure. Christofer in many ways represents this desire. He matches her spontaneity and slightly reckless approach to a relationship. Over time as she matures she comes to value the stability Luke gives her. She makes her own stability in her career and home life, but Luke adds to that stability without trying to change her. She’s free to completely be herself with Luke, whereas Christopher looks at her as who she was at 16. Rory similarly changes what she wants and each of her boyfriends reflects that. Dean represents love and stability, Jess represents love and adventure. Logan gives her all three, and Rory has demonstrated over the course of their relationship that she wants all three. I think she isn’t ready to admit that at the end of the series, so she rejects his proposal. Nevertheless I agree that the way their relationship ended was nonsensical.

With Rory turning down the proposal, I interpreted it as her choosing to focus on her career which could take her physically anywhere in the world. If she said yes to Logan she'd have to move with him (cause that's what he wanted) and limit herself with locations in her career. I think it was a smart decision for her to say no and focus on her career first. If they were really meant to be, he'd support that and they'd be able to find a way back and be together. But for Logan it was: say yes and we move together or you pursue your career and we break up. That isn't healthy in my opinion, so I can't say I was sad when they broke up.

But he decided she was more important to him than his immature ways. Every time he made a mistake he would do everything to make it right. And would not give up. He was willing to do everything it took to be good enough for her. And when he asked her to marry him I was sure she would say yes.

Logan was just the scapegoat for Rory's bad decisions. People seem to view their relationship in some patriarchal fashion where he was expected to swoop in and save her from the chaos she was reigning down on herself, but instead he supported her as a partner, allowing her to grow and mature at at time where she needed to do that. You see character after character [especially Lorelai] unable to face that Rory was at the root of her own demise [and I use that term loosely- nothing she did was unforgivable] and Logan maturely didn't even put the blame on Rory to defend himself, he's so zen. I love him.

Yes! I totally love them together! I get that they have problems, but considering that they are both pretty messy people with a lot of issues, I think it's a sign of their strength, that they are so stable. They just have the best communication, like, most of there fights get resolved fairly quickly by them just talking, which is very refreshing for a TV-couple. Also I love that they support each other, in whatever they do (even if it's as stupid as steeling a boat). As someone who honestly went through a similar phase as Rory in season six (obviously less dramatic, cause it's real life) I think he was one of the few people that acted right, pressuring her to go back to College would have just lead to her pushing him away and ending up completely alone, instead he was just there for her, without judging.

I think Logan's introduction is an intro to his mysterious and unpredictable persona and he didn't mean everything he said. Like he says "now tell me that wasn't fun", showing he was literally just playing devil's advocate. It showcases how he is compatable with Rory because, like Paris, he challenges Rory which she had been lacking since entering this new era (Yale era) of her life.

I did think the women were incredibly rude and manipulative to tell Rory they hooked up with her partner. What kind of person does that for any reason other than being cruel and sadistic?
That said, his behavior towards Jess and the ultimatum at the end definitely screamed red flags and entitlement.
As others have said, ASP never watched season 7, and I find the psychological aspect of her choices fascinating. She was so stuck on the original ending that SHE wanted, kind of like How I Met Your Mother’s creators, that she ignored the genuine arc of the characters and forced them to revert back to her version. As part of this unhealthy, obsessive approach, she also positioned them to act like people in their early 20’s despite the reality being that they were in their thirties.
I wonder if she ever took the pushback to heart or watched season 7 after people reacted so terribly to the revival.

I certainly don't dislike Logan as a partner for Rory, I just was always pretty...unmoved by them? Like, with Luke and Lorelai I was actively chomping at the bit for them to get (or get back) together, but with Rory and Logan they just kind of existed for me, and therefore their overall relationship just felt...fine. I wish that I shipped them harder! But the heart wants what the heart wants haha.

I just discovered your Gilmore Girls content and love it sooo much. I probably have watched the show too many times, I cannot watch it anymore without analyzing almost every move they make. But I totally agree with you that Logan is the best boyfriend, they are just a joy to watch, they have similar interests, the same humor and goals in life... everything you said.
If you ever make a video about the men in Lorelai's life, maybe you can talk more about Jason Stiles. In my opinion he and Logan are very alike in the role they play in their respective Gilmore Girl's life. And if it wasn't for the conflict with Richard, maybe Jason and Lorelai could have worked really well together. They had a perfect chemistry, understood the worlds they came from, wanted to build their lifes independently from their parents and where very driven. They bounced off of one another so nice, I just loved the episodes when they were together - but I feel kind of alone with this opinion. I would love to hear your take

Nice analysis of Logan and Rory's relationship - I liked him for a lot of the same reasons. Jess was not good for her for several reasons - his rudeness towards Lorelai was unforgivable, he pressured Rory to have sex, and he just disappeared with no explanation. He was also pretty awful to Luke. I understand he was having a tough time with his parents, but so do a lot of teenagers; it doesn't turn them into jerks. Jess seemed to grow up a lot, but I still don't think he is right for Rory - they should just be friends.

They really worked well together, and if Logan would’ve been able to get out from underneath his daddy I would’ve liked for them to be end game. But he chose not to. She needs someone who has more freedom. Which is why she should get back together with Jess now that he actually has his life held together really well.

Being casual with Logan gave her a lot of anxiety when he didn’t call or update because its a hugeee contrast from how Dean treated her. He was a call her 60 times a day kind of boyfriend. Not to mention how her introduction to love in her teens was constantly having multiple boys into her: Dean, Tristan, Jess, and where they overlapped.

    @sarahweiner6924 Рік тому +17

I've never thought Rory and Logan were right together (maybe in Season 7, but the Palladinos didn't write Season 7, so it's only sorta cannon and Logan, especially, got an arc that it's pretty clear we wouldn't have gotten if they had continued writing the show.)
So, with that out of the way, let me explain:
As some people have mentioned in the comments, Logan and Rory's relationship coincides with Rory becoming a more unlikeable character. I would say that, by the end of Season 3, Rory is an accomplished teenager with a strong work ethic and sense of right and wrong. She is also selfish and has a heavy dose of main character syndrome - so that sense of right and wrong tends to take a back seat to her relationship desires. Nevertheless, she is funny, quite passionate about interests outside of school (books, music, travel) and only interested in the lavish life style of her grandparents because it enable her to have a deeper relationship with them.
I tend to pin Rory's "downfall" to fourth episode of Season 4 (which I think is also when she cut her hair). Weird as this may sound, I think the long hair was helping Bledel maintain the Girl Next Door/down to earth vibe, which she either struggled to incorporate into the character, or chose not to after this point. Also, if you look at Rory's. storyline for Season 4, they're lousy. They are: how does she navigate her relationship with a married Dean? How does she casually date? Where can she study? How does she become a good reviewer? What does she do at the tailgate? How does she respond to Paris's relationship with a professor? What does she do when Jess comes back?
    I'll stop there.
But while Lorelai's season 4 storyline is pretty focused on Digger and launching the inn, Rory's is much more disjointed. The paper and classes stuff could have been good opportunities for establishing Rory the College Student, but they often show her as entitled, mean and unassertive. By Season 5, Rory's most-unlikeable qualities: her selfishness, lack of loyalty and disrespect for others are at the forefront. And while there's one nice episode where she says she wants to double-down on doing real journalism, that's not where her story goes. Instead, she starts writing features and she interns at the Sanford paper (both of which are just as much vehicles to progress her relationship with Logan as they are to show her drive and career aspirations). So Logan enters the picture at a time when Rory's character has lost most of her more positive qualities.
Rory of Season 5 is certainly more likable and fun to watch than Season 4 Rory, but her drive in the first half of the season is focused on landing Logan, not achieving at Yale or landing a career. Her nerdyness comes off as much more cartoonish than passionate, as it did in the earlier seasons. In the latter half, Rory spends a lot of time being pushed by Logan out of her comfort zone, and while she seems to like a lot of the new experiences, her uncomfortableness with most of it and Lorelai's disapproval of it makes us question her choices, so it's hard to root for her, because the show has spent the last season and half stripping down most of the things we like about the character and replacing it with things we don't understand (ie, her down-to-earthness is replaced with a comfort in Logan's lifestyle).
In the first half of Season 6, Rory's drive is gone. And here I'll disagree with your analysis: while Logan IS uncomfortable with Rory's choice to drop out of Yale, he barely pushes her to reconsider it, and actually further enables and encourages the life she builds in Hartford. I'm not sure that's bad boyfriend behavior, but it's frustrating then to root for him because that's not the Rory we want AND (as you pointed out) Logan is at his whininess and most-privileged (oh no! I have to prepare to inherit a newspaper empire when I graduate from college) at this point.
When Rory gets back to Yale, she is much more smoothed out - she wears a lot of blazers and other high-end adult fashion and tailored items, a lot of her nerdiness is gone by this point; reading and music are more hobbies than passions- AND she ends up taking Logan back, so rather than focus on her career aspirations, those storylines are B-plots in the Logan and Rory arc.
Which is all to say: on paper, there might be some good reasons to root for Logan and Rory (and again, I think they actually make quite a good partnership in the psuedo-cannon Season 7). HOWEVER, the Rory/Logan relationship coincides with a character change in Rory that makes her far less interesting. Had the writers made different choices about her arcs (a focus on foreign policy and poli sci studies given her career aspirations rather than English and psychology?) The relationship may had been much easier to root for. But, that would have been a fundamentally different relationship and frankly, not the story the Palladinos wanted to tell.

Anytime she is spoilt or life hands her success too easily...she spirals. In contrast, whenever life was hard or she was without, she found her strength and inner motivation. It's for that reason I think Logan isn't the best fit for her. Even in the revival, her literal light at the end of the tunnel only came when she for the second time walked away from all the privilege in her life. This is what Lorelai realized about Rory that she waited for her to realize about herself. Rory's problems are always heightened the closer she is to the privileged world she was introduced to through her grandparents.

Re: Logan and him wanting Rory to go back to Yale, I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. I know that many people dislike Jess's approach to confronting Rory on the sudden change in her life but to be frank, Logan's approach was far from perfect either. To me it felt more dismissive and disinterested on his side than him being genuinely supportive, because a) he doesn't really ask WHY she chose to suddenly drop out, she doesnt directly tell him it's because of his father and Logan never prods into that (which Rory later takes it as him silently *agreeing* with Mitchum in her downward spiral; this doesn't necessarily mean that he does, just that she doesn't fully communicate with him about the issue at hand and he never tries to do so, either), b) he doesn't really take it seriously that she is considering to DROP OUT of Yale, not simply take time off, despite the fact that this is what Rory insists on multiple times. I know that the overall Yale arc in season 6 does make it look like Rory was simply taking time off but it certainly didn't start off that way because she and Lorelai got into a big argument over Rory *dropping out* of Yale and not wanting to continue with her studies at all until she "figured out what she wanted to do that wasn't journalism", since she considered herself not good enough for that once Mitchum told her she wasn't. And once Rory moves in with her grandparents, we mostly see her being idle and depressed; she isn't really setting out to find a new life plan for herself or a new career or even some other drive for her, she's stuck in one place and Logan sees that and doesn't really concern himself much with this in spite of that being the opposite of how Rory was like, even in season 5. Now, I don't technically blame Logan for Rory's decision or her not getting back to Yale until Jess visits her, because his very lackadaisical approach just reminded me of how he approaches his own life: his father has everything mapped out for him, so he technically has no need for a motivation or interest in his career, he has everything done for him and this negatively affects him to the point where he has these very severe coping mechanisms to deal with the mental toll of that. But he takes this similar approach to Rory's issue at hand and I honestly don't think that's what *Rory* needed. I think Jess's visit was necessary in a way for her to realize that she can't just let an older, more powerful man like Mitchum tell her what she should or shouldn't be if she wants that for herself and achieves it. In a way, thats what Jess did; he went against all the stuff in his personal life that indicated he was meant to achieve nothing; even Liz and Luke who in a way "gave up" on trying to push him for something greater. And yes, the argument scene doesn't look the greatest but to me it felt more like Jess was concerned than scornful towards Rory for 'not fulfilling what she needed to do'. Like when you look at someone who used to be so driven and also very emotionally close to her mother, and is now languishing with her grandparents and having to worry about who she invites in the house, it's clear that something isn't really right. I think that it also didn't help that Rory simply didn't seem like she was fully happy with her situation either; like saying it was "all temporary", being embarrassed over her involvement with DAR meetings.

For me, I understand Rory saying no. She doesn’t wanna be tied down with jobs based on him and where HE needs to be. She wants to be her own women and for once she has the option to live anywhere and do anything. She hasn’t closed the door on grad school…even in the future ones she hasn’t for sure. She’s figuring out who she is. And while you CAN be in a relationship while figuring yourself out, being engaged is different. They can be in love and together and in different locations. I think they should’ve talked about it longer and not at her graduation 😢 like if he said he was willing to follow her wherever -I mean, his dad does have papers everywhere- then I think she would’ve been more inclined bc she would’ve felt more equal.
For me, I can’t be in a relationship while figuring msuelf out. I actually broke up with a guy bc he wanted to get engaged to me afyer I graduated and even was willing to try to locate with me (tho we’d still kinda be long distant). I said no. It led to me breaking up with him.
U first need to figure out what YOU want before u can make sure you’re with who you want. I think Logan’s perfect for her, and that they should’ve kept dating. I don’t have a Logan lol but I did o would try to stay with him and get him to work with me. But yeah. I think it was more about autonomy. If he didng give the ultimatum they’d be together and he would’ve never been engaged to that heiress he ends up cheating on with Rory in the future.

I'm more recent to the Gilmore Girls. I found them during the pandemic and watched from start to finish in a couple of weeks. I immediately fell in love with the Rory and Logan's love story because it was so real. I loved Dean as a first boy friend for Rory. I never liked Jess because I didn't appreciate how he came between Rory and Dean but that was Rory's fault too. I didn't like how the writers changed Dean's character so that Rory could like Jess. Logan's introduction brought some excitement back into the show for me. I thoroughly enjoyed their Romance, it's twists and turns ups and downs. It was the first adult kind of romance for Rory. I was shocked to find out that people liked Jess for Rory instead of Logan. I could never understand that. Thanks for your view point. I hated the ending and in the end I disliked Rory. The boat thing, he did that for her with her. It wasn't his idea but Rory wanted it so he did it. I have actually watched the entire series a few times because it comes on about 12-14 hours a day, episodes back to back, starting from season 1-7 so I get to watch it but I must admit that I skip past some of the Jess and Rory stuff because I found them boring as a. couple.

I so agree with you !!!
Dean was the sweet highschool boyfriend and Logan the more mature college one, while Jess was this transitional romance which wasn't that great imo when you look back at it...
I loved Dean in season 1 and beginning of season 2, then hate how they messed up his character. Also that cheating incident and how he treated his wife in season 4 ? Like hell no. He clearly didn't know what he wanted and was bad for Rory.
The romance with Jess was kinda boring to me, I don't see the spark everyone is talking about. However Jess in the later seasons would have been great for her, but maybe more as a friend than a lover...
Logan is by far my favorite now, I feel like he's not as appreciated as Jess just because he's rich or he can come off as arrogant, but he never annoyed me as much as Dean's jealousy episodes or Jess' terrible mood swings.
Logan was the best boyfriend for Rory imo (in college AND in later life). I just wish they would've stayed together, why did Rory need to finish the serie as a single girl ?

His family said that's the kind of wife he needed. Logan never said or indicated he wanted that. You said why he didn't push Rory to go back to Yale. It wasn't because he would be making a lot of money so she didn't need a career. No, it's because he believed she would eventually go back. And I don't think he felt taking a break (because he saw it as simply a break) was this crisis that everyone else did.

But it was obvious in all his actions that he didn't want a housewife and wanted her to work. I would even say him trying to marry her and move away together was a way to open doors for her away from his father. I don't think he would have pressured her to take his name but he wanted her to be able to make it.

I was okay with Logan until the end when he broke up with Rory because she wanted to take some growing time after college-even though he had-it was spoiled and immature. Actually I think Martie would have made a better partner for her. They had the same values, work ethic and liked each other as friends. Or Jess-post novel.

I completely agree with your opinion on Logan. I find them the most compatible out of all the couples. Just one more thing, I am so bothered by the fact that the actor who plays Jess (every time he showed up on screen in season 6) had so much freaking chemistry with Alexis, but the actor who plays Logan...Rory and him have literally ZERO chemisty. I know that this is probably due to the fact that the actors were dating in real life but they could've found someone who had better chemistry with Alexis. That is probably one of the reasons that people don't really like Rory and Logan. Still the dialogue was AMAZING and the compatibility was astounding. I just recently discovered your channel and i am so amazed with the work that you put into this series. Love your deep and psychological insights on the characters...it's just wonderful. You make my day❤️

Part 2: -that was when he stole something. Logan is a full-fledged character. I am not praising him for no reason. It's like people forget he's been around rich assholes his whole life. Have you seen his friends? That's something they would've done. He's changed a lot for Rory, in every aspect and it is mentioned. Everyone's surprised he even has a girlfriend. He would've never cared that the Daily news didn't put out a paper that day. And he would've never tried to go for his dream for a bit unless Rory has made an impact on him. But before that? There are only stories of him being a rich brat who's only trying to forget how much baggage that comes with. He can't even choose his job, his wife, or anything really so of course, he acted out. Who wouldn't? But after being like that for so long, out of pain, and powerlessness he picked up a few things. He didn't stand there quietly, asking, like: what? It's like he just realized what he's done and how his ways are incorrect by being near Rory once again and had no way to explain it because to him too, stealing didn't really make much sense cause the rich didn't even ever notice they stole stuff so why do it? Also, remember his apartment? Every item had a personality. That armor he has in his place is a metaphor if you think about it and also...it's not the best armor. Not once did Rory ever praise his paintings or anything as she did at his parents' house. It's all him. So in a way, yeah. He saw all that rich stuff and went: they wouldn't notice because rich people in his life literally only got stuff because they're rare and expensive. But stealing it was his friend's way of hurting their parents without them noticing and he did that there too. Only to realize that...Emily is rich but she cares about what she owns too. Her family, too, is new to him so he doesn't know how to react either. They're not the same as his parents or most rich people he's met. They're also: unique so he's kind of embarrassed. Also, this was his moment to impress Rorry's family. Yes? But how did he impress the people he ever wanted to impress? His friends. A...stealing stuff from the people they had to obey or else they'd get no money seems like something they'd like.
    Reason 4: treating Jess badly.
I thought it was self-explanatory. Did Jess deserve it? No. But that was the point. it had nothing to do with him. Logan was in a really bad place then if I remember correctly because his parents were pressuring him into stuff and also, he was jealous but angry this time. The first time it was cute? When it was a friend of his but which we didn't really know much about if anything. Now,, he's an ass because he tried to directly offend Jess, who we know more about, and like....we got offended instead. But he was trying to make him seem lesser in Rory's eyes with every comment. The same thing he did the first time he got jealous when she showed up with his friend so she'd ditch him. But there it was less angry. Here, he can't hide his anger because he probably taught they were past this. They were dating, not only 'friends with benefits'. And when he failed to make him look bad because he wasn't his charming self, he left because his tactic failed. And anything else he would've done would've made it worse. The only way he could've calmed down and leveled with Rory to explain what he felt or whatever was if she went home with him where he would've felt safer, and Jess would've been gone. But she refused.
(Ps: Rich people are mean in this show. You've seen how his family treated Rory. And how Emily treats others. Well...he knows how to put others down. He's had training. He basically told Jess that unless he had a billion-dollar company, nothing he does is ever good enough which is what he's probably been told. That's why there was a line like: is it the greatest American novel or nah? Like he had to aim high or else, what are you celebrating? Basically, it's not worth it man. Not to mention, he himself, was upset at his parents then, I think... but he's had to deal with that his whole life, so he took out not only his jealousy on Jess but his insecurities too. The ways he's been belittled. Also...did we all forget how Jess had fought with not only Dead but anyone before...like anger-wise, Jess was in a good place then. Logan wasn't. They are both capable of controlling their anger, but in that case, for the first time, I think, might I add, Jess, controlled himself. But Logan couldn've lashed out a lot of times and didn't do it)
Also, him forgetting that they cheered made me think he was already drunk, more than anything.
-Sleeping with his sister's friends thingy. I think it was the easiest for him to do. They were close to someone he knew so he didn't have to go out of his way to find someone. Accessibility. And from the viewer's point of view, it kinda shows how little he cared about who it was because they were so close to his own sister and yet, he still did it. And he called them that because for him they were worthless. Just like a bottle of something is worthless when you're trying to get really drunk because of someone. They're just a device to forget someone important. And by calling them that, it also diminished their importance to Rory's eyes. Not to mention, none of them were able to get him. Like none of them did anything but sleep with him. So...what does that say about them? I am not saying he didn't do anything wrong though or that he's justified even though he was in a lot of pain after losing the only real thing he ever got for himself, by himself, but they all said yes too. They were all in it. Consensual. He proved he cared about consent. So... he was in a lot of pain but they weren't. So...who was using who?
Reason 6: Coming to terms with the relationship with his father.
    Of course not.
This show showed years of everyone's lives. Nothing that complicated could've been solved that easily. That wouldn't have been realistic. And that would've really taken years of him hating himself for being someone who he didn't want to be for his family to get him to rip himself from his whole family, friends, current job, and lifestyle really. All he's ever known. Rory's mom was young when she left but Logan's youth was spent in their claws. Imagine Lorelay if she did abort the child and kept living with them. A mess right? Cause they had similar conditions but Richard never pressured her to take his job, he pressured Christopher who refused. But Logan couldn't refuse. He was the guy of his family. And he didn't have any life-altering event that could've allowed him to go right or left early on...like having a child. He had to cope. And he chose to cope too. Instead of escape. He's similar to Rory's mom but different because he chooses to keep playing the part his father wanted him to play even if it was to 'have fun while he still could because his father didn't care enough yet'. And also why Lorelay hates him. Because he didn't have the guts to say no to his rich life and family for good. Ever.
It's 4 30 AM. Why did I write all of this? Because I felt like you didn't realize all this or just didn't mention it. But I kind of get where he's coming from so I can see through his actions more. The pain of him being in his family's claws cause like, he is literally, clearly numbing the pain of it while he can until he's no longer allowed to do anything but work until death...well...for me, I got it. I get him. And I think people saw him as just someone who just gets drunk a lot and complains about his money. But it was never about his money. Money does make your life better. But in this case, all he got is money at the expense of everything else and that hurts. Like I'd rather not be rich than not be able to do the job that I want, spend time with who I want (cause they criticized his friends too), date and marry who I want, etc. Like his life is not his own. All we saw was this brief window of breath he had before his dad would've slammed it in his face. He literally said that his father had it all planned out for him so why would he study? Why would he do anything else? It wouldn't matter. Having a girlfriend? Why when they would choose someone else anyway? Probably someone who made sense business-wise and nothing else. Like...think about it. It would suck. Also, his father is a famous, rich, notorious, well-known journalist. Like...he can get dirt on anyone so of course, they're going to listen to him if he says: fire my son 'cause then he'll work for me. Like..there's no place for him to go, man. Or not a lot of places where he'd feel lie he's worth anything after being instilled with the: you gotta make a lot of money or else you might as well serve drinks. His worth it's attached to his job, money, status, etc. And they could all get taken away at the snap of their fingers.
    Go watch the rest.

I really liked dean in the pilot but felt like he immediately started a downward trajectory. It's subtle at first but by season 2...oh boy, season 2, they did a character assassination on Dean. It's like he's not even the same character. I'm pretty sure the writers view Jess as Rory's Luke so anytime he's around any and all other boyfriends just start acting crazy for no apparent reason and their characters do a 180. Don't get me wrong, I like Jess, especially in the later seasons, but they definitely make the other guys look bad to prop up Jess whenever he's around. I also really hated Dean the second time around when they got back together after he cheated on Lindsey. I could just never get on board after that and felt like everything I had liked about the character was gone.

@@RachaelTheRed I think my opinion of Dean is coloured by the age I was when I first watched the show. Dean was basically the perfect first boyfriend in the same way that I felt Harvey from Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a perfect first boyfriend lol. On rewatch and as an adult now rather than a teenager Dean definitely is not perfect yet I still find myself enjoying when he and Rory are together in the beginning. Definitely character assassination happened however because Dean has lots of flaws and they are not easy to get over
