Hiking in the footsteps of the Canadian Liberators

The memory of important events in history is not only kept alive by objects. Certain sites also allow us to discover our past.
Today we are launching the new themed route “Hiking in the footsteps of the Canadian Liberators”, a hiking and cycling route that crosses the Netherlands from Zeeland to Groningen and commemorates the important role the Canadian soldiers played in the liberation of the Netherlands.
When following this hiking route, you will discover the history of the Battle of the Scheldt in Autumn 1944. Retrace the footsteps of the Canadian soldiers by commemorating the Operation Veritable during the final stages of the Second World War and the following liberation of the Northern Netherlands.
The new Canadian trail forms part of the international walking and cycling route network of the Liberation Route Europe. The various themed routes span several thousand kilometers in different European countries and invite hikers and cyclists to visit museums, cemeteries and other historical sites that recall the final phase of the Second World War.
