Such a good topic. I was a superintendent for one of the largest residential roofing companies in the country and we used OC 100% of the time then about two years ago we switched to GAF. I loved the OC product line but GAF has more options for Title 24 compliance which is a requirement in Southern California with the heat. Biggest difference I’ve noticed is OC shingles have higher granule loss after install and higher levels of “tobacco juicing” so the question is will the OC shingles dry out faster? 🤔. I will say that my GAF rep is way more helpful then my OC rep was.

We use CertianTeed and never have blow offs. Guys are trained to hit the steep slope section. Does cause some low nails when installing but when guys have to change them they see how hard it is to rip out.

FYI...I am a homeowner looking for a new roof. We have aTamko Heritage 35 year roof. It is now 30 years old and we have never had a single problem. No leaks, a few small breaks where an oak tree rubbed on it. We live in an area that gets wind as we are on a big hill. It is SW Va. We are replacing in the next few months because it has gotten so old. The homeowners company has questioned it. We are looking art the GAF Timberline HDZ line from a reputable company. Good choice? Comments?

I was a fan of GAF & Elk for decades with Ambassador, now Landmark TL & Presidential TL being my primary shingle of choice, however GAF’s shingles have become much lighter & when a roof failure was denied about 9 years ago I was finished- OC is not an option, very light & extreme granule loss and they mar up very badly, at least in the Southern California summers..My shingle of choice is Certainteed...if you can afford it Landmark TL or Presidential TL-

I’m not impressed at all. Any shingle can withstand the wind without nails when it seals. Pabco Premier is thicker and heavier and will do better than Gaf if not sealed before warmer weather.

I install lots of GAF shingles as a sub and I can tell you they have problems. Like the double thickness is lower than the rest of the shingle, which makes it hard to keep straight. But I mean overall they're ok. I don't get call backs for blow offs and weird leaks. I think a lot of these shingle manufacturers are getting noticed more is because of the 50yr warranty they are claiming today. I'm pretty sure the people who install roofs know that's a false claim. The only roofs I think that can hold that title of being "lifetime" is slate, concrete, and metal. But asphalt shingles, no way.

I'm a homeowner and will have my roof replaced this month. I did minimal research including buying GAF and OC to hold them side by side. Without a doubt, OC blows GAF away. GAF had weird gouges on the face of several shingles, was losing way too many granules and the nailing zone was a joke. My neighbors had GAF installed and 3 years in it looks horrible with black mildew growth. I know there are better shingles than OC out there but will still go with it due to availability in my area. GAF is good for a shed.

I had a professor who worked for Gillette who told this story. A competitor came out with an ad where they stuck a knife into a Gillette razor, gave it a twist and the razor broke. Then they stuck the knife in their razor and it wouldn't break. Now Gillette knows that this has absolutely nothing to do with how well the razor works or how durable it is in the real world. But the ad makes their razor look cheap. So they completely redesigned their manufacturing process to make a razor that doesn't break when you stick a knife into it just because that ad made them look bad in away that resonates with people. Even if GAF can prove in testing that a pull test on the nailing strip doesn't really make the shingle any better in the real world, it still makes them look bad. The sales guy for the people selling OC shingles can go into people's houses and show the customer something they can see and touch that makes this shingle look better than the other shingle. Even if it isn't actually better, perception matters.

The codes tests, or the standards are based on tests of new products put down by the best or a good technician at a lab. They are not rating products in marginal conditions and certainly not improperly or over old substrates. Inside the companies they may do such tests.
Another aspect to rating is they are often pass-fail. What you really want is tests to failure, if you could do such test in cold, old plywood and such you will learn about products quality. BTW most of our lab test have big variability - you need to test many - like 10.

We are near and work in one of the most windy cities in the country. We have seen thousands of installs from others and us as well, using GAF shingles and they are still intact. Very few I would say a hand full each year that have few shingles blow off. Hurricane sandy may have proved some of that.GAF just has a stronger market here. Each part of the country I'm sure everyone has the one that they use daily, because of how popular that shingle is in that region. I would love for them to turn the comments on! I will say after 20yrs in the industry GAF has stood behind there shingles and I have seen blow offs from GAF but not as bad as Certainteed, IKO and others seen over the years. OC shingles are now installed by companies here but still a newer shingle that would have to prove it's worth (in this area). In general, most people only go out of their way to leave a bad review. Something has to get them to a level to want to take time to write something. For us, on a smaller scale of the industry, we have the chance to ask for reviews. From a corporate standpoint, they dont always get the chance to ask the end consumer and so their satisfaction rating is skewed, so it's easier to avoid inaccurate ratings by leaving the ratings off.
It's the same situation with BBB. Rarely do happy or content people take the time to leave a a decent or good review. It's always the mad people who go out of their way to do it. Not saying it is right that these companies avoid it, but I do understand why.
Also, from a manufacturers position, a lot of bad reviews I read on certain brands come down to poor workmanship; not the product itself. The homeowner doesnt understand this and so they blame the product. I see the same type of moronic reviews on Amazon. People leave 1 star ratings on great products because FedEx damaged the package or their package arrived late. It's unfair and inaccurate to some degree, even if a small degree.

      @RR_184 4 роки тому +2

@@RoofingInsights3.0 I use Atlas almost exclusively, so I definitely agree with you. I'm just saying that "most" people won't go leave a review unless asked or if they are unhappy.
Plus, most of Atlas's positive reviews are from contractors, not homeowners. Scroll down and you'll see that homeowners are the ones that log in to leave a complaint about "shingles blowing off and Atlas won't pay." Chances are, they were nailed improperly and of course no manufacturer is going to cover that on a general warranty. Homeowners rarely understand this though and so they blame the product and the brand instead of the roofer.

That’s my point. GAF has 280k like on Facebook. They have army of installers. If they turn on reviews and ask contractors to share feedback they will get it. Why wouldn’t they? Look at Tesla, Elon Musk is not afraid of people testing it, talking about it, criticizing it, even mocking his presentation (failed). GAF presentation didn’t fail, we want to do it with them and see how others compare to their test too.

GAF has had lots of claims. Im getting ready to get new roof and I'm swinging towards awens corning...
The more I think about it the more it makes sense. GAF cam be purchased at home depot. Whats home depots business model? Great branding and even better margins.
GAF has a prorated warranty and apparently their normally 50 year life time roof has dropped to 30. Mean while owens corning 50 year limited life warranty has zero proration until you hit the 25 year mark.
Also, the roofer willing to do my OC roof is at 10k. The GAF roof is 13k.
Great branding and even better margin. Im pretty sure I'm going with the OC. Roof.
Now, the GAF installer quoted me for ridge vents and the little things that might make a roof look better. Do ridge vents really matter as long as the roof is properly vented?

Roofing Insights, do not know what you mean by your comment. You can buy it, test it and then let the company comment if they choose to. Otherwise, it is a company that people will go elsewhere for data instead of your database. Plus, it may also give people a reason to perhaps buy gaf vs malarkey shingles. After all, based on your own test - Malarkey take the lead, thus far.

When OC Duration came out I started selling that as well. So mainly sell GAF HDZ and some OC TruDef Duration. I live 10 miles from the Texas Gulf Coast so wind mileage is important to me! Lately I’ve been concerned about selling the unlimited wind warranty GAF offers and haven’t yet but I will say there video was impressive.
