      Feeling inspired, but would even more inspired if the music video playing in the background of this clip would be made public, rather than unlisted. It is such a beautiful song, so it's just all kinds of wrong that it has 1/6th the number of views of this clip. ua-cam.com/video/nTphEozUkxg/v-deo.html

    A 12-year-old wins AGT and gains thousands, probably hundreds of thousands of fans almost overnight - as she puts it, "a small platform" - and what does she decide to do with all that? She wants "to spread positivity", donate to charities, support music programs in low-income area schools, but not just by giving money - she teams up to start a choir and gives of her time, of herself. It's not just her songwriting talent and beautiful voice that make her stand out, she is an inspiring individual, a real mensch.

    There are literally tens of thousands of musicians throughout the decades and this 14 year old singer/songwriter gets her own signature ukulele from Fender after only 2 years in the public spotlight. Just shows you how incredibly talented Grace is and how much faith Fender has in her future. Congrats Grace VanderWaal , you are a true artist !

      Love your comment!! Yes I do!! ‘Tens of thousands and decades’ and the company has been around for decades. They don’t just throw their hat in the ring for anyone. Some people over there see the writing on the wall. They see what we do, and are smart enough to know where she is heading. And for Grace to be first ukulele and youngest Fender, they REALLY see it. Such a validation for us who knew she was more wonderful than the usual

      I had that feeling about her impact on the music business about 30 seconds into her AGT audition video from 2016. As a musician, you just know - She's on a different level-

      I did too. I’m privileged to have watched her from that one night just like you. I remember hoping she was gonna do good just because of how much I loved when she said ‘thank you, my goodness’ to Mandel when he said she looked lovely. I thought to myself what a great and different little girl. And then just the second line in ‘I don’t play by the rules of the game’ I knew something special was going on

      Well said all. And Thomas, Fender signed her on after a year, or even less. It's just taken them this long to get the ukes out to us. I'm not sure that Grace really knows how big having a Fender signature instrument is.

    Genius speaking. When she said "I can hear the chord in my head" I went "WHA!?!!". I guess a trained musician arrives there over time, but having learned that basically by herself just blows me away.

      To me she’s like the John Mayer of the ukulele in that John has that intricate knowledge of chords and can just pull some off the wall chord out of his head and put it to use. She has a good head for music

    • @katsoutofthebox
      @katsoutofthebox 6 років тому +1

      HotelPapa100 You cannot learn it they way she means it. You can be born with this ability to hear the chord inside your head or you can not be born with it and learn it to some degree.

    This is extraordinary. As a musician I watch artists like Mark Knopfler talk about their creative styles and processes for inspiration and to learn from. I'm always much more inspired by hearing Grace talk about hers. That says a lot when you realize she is only 14. These little peaks into her world of creativity is priceless to me.

    I hope she never changes. We just lost one of our dogs, and it ripped right through our hearts. But when I need to cry knowing kind hearted people still exist, I will just look up one of her songs or videos. My wife and I love her beautiful personality, and if she ever changes, I hope it is for the better, not the worse.

      John Steel I'll agree it's a slippery slope but Grace seems to have a handle on it. Here is part of her interview with Pop Crush :
      What advice would you give to young people who are considering auditioning for shows like AGT or The Voice?
      I think that it would just be to make sure that you're very, very secure with yourself. I've seen way too many insecure people get taken advantage of, and it's very, very sad because people can sniff that out so fast if you're unsure and insecure in yourself. They will take advantage of that. Just make sure you're really sure of yourself before you jump into anything, or else you might wake up and be like, "Who am I?" You might lose yourself, and that's a horrible feeling.
      Not letting people walk all over you, and learning boundaries, is a lifelong journey. Have you had experiences like that since getting into the music industry?
      Yeah, I mean, I think everyone has pretty much in the industry, but I feel like you just have to kind of set your ground because it is pretty current. It isn't like [it was in] the 2000s. They're not going to force you to be sexual, show your body, and do all these things that you don't want to do. If you stand your ground and show them who you are, like my label knows who I am ... America's Got Talent, when I was on that show, they started to know who I was and realized, "Okay, we can't touch her."

    Im a 40 year old man. I’ve got a stand full of strats, teles, etc, and i grabbed a uke because of Amanda Palmer, but the sheer joy Grace shares in her playing touched me. This will be the first signature instrument I get, because far more than being a “Rock God” music is about sharing joy; And I’ve never seen someone who does that more than Grace, and it’ll make me feel good to think I am in some small way supporting both her and a company I respect at the same time :)

    As with all businesses both large and small it's first about the bottom line. I don't think Fender said, "...Let's sign this little girl onto our worldwide corporation and if we make a buck or two, great." First and foremost, Fender want's to make money. Wait, let me finish. That being said, I think, (and hope), that this marriage between Grace and Fender will start a revival of keeping music in our schools. And I, for one, appreciate what Grace and Fender are doing.
    Most of us with any age on us grew up having music through out our school years. Singing, learning the recorder in 4th grade and having a school band and chorus. Even if we didn't participate after our recorder days we still went to our school concerts. We heard our marching and pep bands at games. We heard them practicing in the hallways during and between classes. Whether we were aware of it or not the music from our school days was a beneficial part of our growing up. Think of all the times you hear even a few notes of a special song and it throws you back in time. Now, think if you never had that growing up. Let's all support their efforts as best we can. I could go on but I'll leave it at that.

    • @SamBorgman
      @SamBorgman 6 років тому +7

      Well said! I think what we're seeing is Grace keeping less and giving away more. Where the Little Miracles come in. Fender taking credit for giving away ukes but the cost is coming from her share in this deal no doubt. This is just business to them and it has to make sense in their books. Fender is pretty new to the uke world. As Grace gets more and more popular this deal will only make them profit more. Fair to assume they are not doing this for the betterment of humanity. So in the end it is really credit to Grace that bringing back music to schools is an outcome of this partnership.

    • @rensvenema3601
      @rensvenema3601 6 років тому +2

      I think you're completely right although I don't feel the bussiness part so much, her signature uke's start at $99 (unlike gibsons new $3000 models). I think it's much more important to show kids what music is like and making sure kids in the future will also be playing instruments and making new music.

    • @marksandal4852
      @marksandal4852 6 років тому +2

      I think there has been a pretty good balance between profit and charity here on Fender's part. They aren't going to make a mint on ukes but their name will get put out there and there will be some young Fender uke players that will go on to be lifetime Fender players, just like Chevy owners that would never think to by a Ford. I was a bit shocked that the ukes were as inexpensive as the are. (BTW I have a concert on order). I do think that Fender realized that they needed to keep the price down because not too many kids, or their parents, are going to shell out much more than $100 on a uke. Even Grace's parents didn't get her one cuz they thought she wouldn't play it. So, she used her birthday money. She sure showed them. Last estimates I heard she's worth around $2M! I would like to believe that there is some humanity involved on Fender's part. I don't see them exploiting their donations. There aren't any, "Look what we're doing" commercials on TV, (although they could make a heckuva Superbowl commercial with Grace. Think Windex).

    • @rensvenema3601
      @rensvenema3601 6 років тому +2

      Completely agree, sure it's still a company which needs to make a profit out of everything they sell. But then again it's great they're letting music continue to be shown to kids. I remember my parents not willing to spend too much on my first guitar thinking I wouldn't play it anymore after a week, but I'm so glad now that they did cause I never had any musical classes before I picked up the guitar. I just knew a bud' of mine was playing guitar and I wanted to do so too, but for so many kids it won't go like that if no one encourages them to pick up an instrument and they end up never doing so either.

    Man....I wish all young people had the spirit, soul and heart of Grace VanderWaal - and I'm not even talking about musical skills. What a great young person she is. Young people like her honestly give me hope for the world and future generations. And thank goodness she has such great parents - that's almost a minority in American now. You know? "A Better Life", starring Grace Vanderwaal.
    Yeah, I can see her movie on the big screen someday. Yeah, Stargirl is coming, but, it's not about Grace. And, yeah, "A Better Life" was written about her brother, but, dang!, she's having "a better life" of her own. She can produce it herself, and might even be able to fund it too with her own earnings.

    At the end, when the interviewer asks how she feels about being the youngest Fender Signature Artist ever, and Grace just looks down and says quietly "Really? That's so cool.", that there is an impressive combination of genuine humility and perhaps a tiny bit of plain 'ol good poker face. I mean, I consider myself to be a reasonably humble person (and I have every reason to be), but if it were me, whether at 14 or today, I cannot say with confidence I could have held back a ginormous grin and perhaps a little comment about how humbling it is to be joining the ranks of JIMI HENDRIX and ERIC CLAPTON!!!

      True. That's how I take it. Well, "Trouble" is the first performance before an audience Grace posted, but it's known that on October 18, 2015 she performed at The Cool Beans open mic in Kindercomak Rd / Oradelle, although there's no video recording of that. There's only one pic playing the Uke in front of a mic. Also we know Grace got her Uke in early 2015, so surely she performed even before October 2015

    Grace cool girl , Fender I play Strats, Grace is the real inspiration, to many.Im happy Fender recognized Grace and captured her ability to inspire others, to be a singer/ song writer /ukulele player.
    I see a Fender Electric in her future. Move aside John Mayer...

    I've had it for about a week. Had to put in new strings because I am a lefty. Took a few days for the strings to settle down. The uke finally sounds good now but does not have the volume of my tenor uke.

    Folks, if you ever get the chance, visit Suffern, NY. It's just north of NYC. It's the Hudson River Valley and quite possibly the most beautiful place on earth, at least the Indians and many painters, thought so. I can see why it's given birth to our prodigy.
