It fascinates me how much the giant preying mantis can learn. She trusts you, lets you pet her, stays with you rather than running off. That's not just instincts; those are learned behaviors. She seems happy, at least.

My mantis does it whenever I take him by surprise, he’s been doing it since he was a baby. I am under the impression that it’s imitating a stick because when he enters the posture he will not move at all for several minutes.
This brings back memories for me. My dad caught one when I was very young. He was big like Kiwi. He found it in the city in the Boston in the road. Brought it home and we let it go in the woods near our home. I will never forget how awesome this creature was. I was fascinated. Since then I have found a few, but they are rare. They are more intelligent and seem more animal than insect. LOVED you video. Thank you!

That stance actually meant it was acting like a stick so no predator could see it. This is actually common when they do that stance but if it was her first time doing that, it actually means you are taking good care of her and she doesn’t see you as a threat.

I hope Kiwi is still ok, especially since this was a month ago. This makes me want to have a Katydid as a pet. They're such similar creatures. Unfortunately in my part of the US they're rare. I've only ever seen 2 grasshoppers, 1 large preying mantis and 1 katydid my entire life.

Had 8 mantis and I'm down to 4 sadly. Getting to that time of year. The other night one of my females was slowing way down so I took her out and held her for a bit. She was a bit more active afterwards, but the next morning I found her passed away. I spend time with each of my mantis so they actually come to me when I open their enclosures. It makes it much easier to take care of them when they don't run try to run away. But it also makes it more sad when it's finally time.
