Enjoy your videos. Done many of the peaks in North Cascades. Been 30 years or so. Too old and disabled now. Views bring back memories of the awesome beauty there. Bag those peaks while you can.
Thanks Jeff! I’m glad you were able to enjoy them while you could. I completely understand, starting to feel Father Time catching up with me after the past year or two. I’ve been blessed. Cheers!
Matt. Another banger my man. My fiance and I woke up just to watch this upload today and we were not disappointed. This the best mountain hiking channel on UA-cam. The fact your whole family goes is even better. Safe travels and can’t wait for the next one dude 🤘🏽
Dang! Best comment ever my friend 😁 thank you! So glad you found the channel and are enjoying the videos so much. I truly love making them and sharing with people! Cheers!
That is so beautiful. It was great to see the trail on from Cascade Pass. We didn't go past the pass. It was one of the most beautiful trails I have done. Those peaks are something!
Been loving these videos! Great content, great footage, I'm glad you popped up in my suggested videos. This looks like a mindblowing area to explore! Hopefully I can come down from Alaska someday and get at least a sample of what that has to offer.
Glad you found the channel 👍🏼! I’ve been back to Washington for 3 straight years now, it’s definitely a place to check out! I can’t imagine Alaska though! Someday I think I’ll be there 😃
I did this climb last Summer car to car in late August. It was a long day. It looks like the smoke cleared for you. You couldn't even see a clear view of all the mountains at the trailhead when we did it. It was still a great climb.
I bet you were right around the time we were up there. We got so lucky. Two days before that for almost a week it was terrible! That Sourdough Mountain fire screwed up everything!
My husband and a friend summitted last summer from the west side of the mountain and then came over, with rope on the summit. Then we went down the south eastern side and went down Sahalee arm. I think that was a better route. We had two cars and parked each from the separate trailheads.
From the spot you stopped there is a class 3 wrap around to the N/NE side of the summit which is much easier, but still quite exposed (many would want to rappel vs downclimb.
Yeah I was watching you guys climb thinking you didn’t have any rope…you def. need to rope up the last bit and you want to rap off it. This was one of my first climbs, and shark fin door to it was cool. I remember all those views and would love to go back.
I’m glad we made the right call then 👍🏼. We actually waited for a while for a couple that were up at the summit to see if they would let us use their rope. Unfortunately we couldn't wait that long. Pretty sure they were bagging Boston Peak as well. I'll be back for Sahale again someday! It wasn't to difficult a push to the summit block. Wish we could've seen the other side.
Great video! I was up there that day and took a picture of you two crossing the glacier. I remember thinking it seemed late in the day for a glacier crossing. The glacier did not look too bad from the video though.
No way 🤣 that's hilarious! I'm glad you found the video! What a beautiful day we all had on the mountain 👍🏼 a little hot in the valley but great up in the alpine. It was pretty straight forward over the glacier but steep. Next time you see us say hi 😉 Cheers!
What a bummer not hitting the summit. I know the feeling it leaves behind. I know you'll be back. You feel like there's any chance you could summit without ropes and down climb?
It was a hard pill to swallow, especially looking back now. The angle was slanted back towards the mountain so footholds were the issue. We couldn't see our footholds coming down. There could be another way up. We took the obvious path to the tie in. Going up that part would have been ok but coming down would have been super sketch. I've seen tie ins a bunch lately and I'll try not to forget rope from now on that's for sure! Drives me crazy! A better climber than me could most likely down climb. I'm decent but that area made us stop and analyze the situation.
Hey guys! This is an amazing video! Thank you for taking us along. Which kind of camera are you using? If it's a GoPro, would you kindly provide your GoPro settings? Your videos have made planning our hiking itinerary easier as my family and I head to Washington in August. Thank you!
Thanks 🙏🏼! I shoot with a GH5 and we also use an IPhone 14 Pro Max because the camera is so good. We do use a GoPro 7 once in a while. I set the WB to around 5000K, auto SS, ISO 100, linear, 4K but never seem to like the outcome. The newer GoPros have a much better picture. I think I’m going to get a 12 for this seasons POV shots 😁
It was basically a glacier in name only although very steep. We maneuvered around the crevasses fairly easy. Not sure how your climbing skills are but maybe bring a rope so you don't run into the same problem we did at the summit block 👍🏼
Thanks David! There’s no entry fee to visit North Cascades NP 👍🏼If you’re backpacking you’ll have to get a backcountry permit in Marblemount at the wilderness info building/ranger station or possibly online. I think the campsites up near Sahale need to be reserved at the wilderness building as well.
how long did the glacier take? and for an experienced hiker who's never done glaciers would this be a feasible first and what equipment would be necessary? Thanks!
The glacier only took us 30-45 mins. It's very steep and depending on the year it could have hidden crevasses. It was late in the season when we went up so everything was visible and obvious. I would definitely bring crampons and an ice axe. Depending on the conditions you might want to rope up with somebody. Sahale Glacier is typically a glacier in name only as it is a small glacier but a glacier nonetheless. It's a good glacier to cut your teeth on. Research glacier travel for sure and try to practice with your equipment before getting on it. Have a blast!
That particular video was recorded the last week of August 2023. Cascade Pass Road just opened for the season a couple weeks ago so you should be good.

Good decision on the summit block. Love the videos. Although this day was a bit smoky, the views were still spectacular. How lucky you are!
Thanks! The Sourdough Mtn fire was still raging then but we did get decent skies that day.

Gosh that sounds awesome! Someday I'll have to get back up there for another run at it. Still burns! Thanks for the info. Cheers!

Right on 👍🏼 definitely bringing rope on missions like that in the future. You live and learn.
Nice video for another of the really superb hikes in the North Cascades, my trekking domain for over 30 years years. Well done.
Thanks again Lee! I’m glad you’re enjoying the vids and hopefully they’re bringing back great memories 👍🏼
One of the most spectacular places I’ve hiked. Reminds me of Swiss Alps.
Absolutely! Now I know why they call it "the American Alps"👍🏼 so gorgeous out there!
Awesome hike, Matt and family! Sahale Arm is high on our list. Hopefully, we'll hike it soon! Those mountain peaks are amazing! Great video! ❤
It really is!
Excellent as always, my brother! Can't wait to hit this one in August!
You'll love it Tim!
Awesome video! Love to see the whole family out there. When you go back to hit that summit shoot me an invite!! 😭😂
Thanks Josh! That might just happen 😁👍🏼
@@TheMountainMatt Cascades look unreal, definitely on my list to check out.
I think the Cascades are my new favorite 👍🏼
Been looking forward to this one! 🙌👌🤯😍 Amazing!

How is the final approach ?
Does it require roped traversal ?

@9:55 ROCK! ;)
Great video! Also, did you need to make any reservations to hike this trail? Or did you only pay for the entrance to the park?
Thank you!
