As an 80s kid, a friend's parents had the 81 Sedan DeVille. I remember the chime and the glow plug light when it started. It was cutting edge with the digital radio and clock. It was a smooth ride. I also remember that each door had an ashtray with a cigarette lighter.
Ahhh, yes, plug it in and add anti -gel to the fuel. Then after the 'diesel wait' light went off, you'd crank it and have to wait for that cloud of exhaust to clear.

I had the same engine in my 81 Seville. In the winter it was extremely unreliable up here in Michigan!
You probably had to use the block heater as well. These engines were garbage.

In 1981 the V8 gas engines came with the V8-6-4 cylinder deactivation!
