Aww my Grandad pass away in January just gone and his name was Jimmy and he was born in 1941. Its like this song was wrote for him. Brings tears to my eyes when I hear it now 🥺❤
Thanks so much for this. Great song. Can I add to my live repertoire, giving due credit of course. PS My dad passed today at 12:30am so timing is great.
Seen Christy last night in Armagh absolute legend and what a story teller never change Christy a true Irishman Danny O’Donnell might have an OBE but you have the hearts of the Irish ☘️ 🇮🇪
MY NEW FAVOURITE CHRISTY MOORE SONG , HAVING BEEN AT THE RECENT BARROWLANDS GIG WITH MY FELLOW CELTS . THE AUDIENCE PAYED CHRISTY THE RESPECT OF NOT CALLING FOR THEIR SONG & ALLOWED HIM TO GUIDE US ON THE JOURNEY . FOR SOME REASON THERE WAS LARGE GROUPS OF IRISH OVER FOR THE CONCERT , THEY SANG LIKE DIAMONDS . SPOKE TO A PRO EU GERMAN COUPLE ( NO WAR FOR OVER 70 YEARS ) & A SCOTTISH COUPLE WHO CONVINCED ME AT LAST TO GET AN IRISH PASSPORT . MANY THANKS. A MAGICAL EVENING . GOD KNOWS WHO THE ONE VOTER IS ,IN BOTH MEANINGS . SEE CHRISTY MOORE AT BARROWLANDS
Had the pleasure of going to see Christy in a small local village 5 years ago you were hearing rumours “don’t ask request, keep the mouth shut Christy can be quite grumpy” the man was a gentleman greeting people at the door as they entered. That only confirmed to me he was a gent aswell as in my eyes as a national treasure. He asked for request during the gig and he happily played plenty including Saco and Vanzetti which I requested. The beauty with Christy for me is even after years of listening to his music every so often you find another beauty like this song and it opens up loads more enjoyment Legend 👌🏼
They laid out the body, in the peaceful pagan home To pay their last respects , all the neighbours came along In the wee hours of the mornin' pagan words from the whiskey still Fallin' from the bushes, sworn enemies are friends again Someone spilled porter on the corpse in the middle of a song And the stories kept on comin' back from 1941 Chorus: Sail on ,sail on, Jimmy Sail on, Jimmy boy Sail on , sail on, Jimmy From this Irish Pagan Ritual Mad Mary from the crossroads, grabbed my arse for all to see "I'll tell your fortune, Scoby, if you come on home with me" "In the name of god now, Mary, some respect for the dead! You can't be grabbin' arses, at a pagan ritual!" Chorus: Sail on, sail on Jimmy etc Father Tim is tellin' Tommy how the Israelites came in And Tommy's atein' sandwiches that are pilled up next to him Someone started singing a Revenge for Skibbereen There's a french lad there translatin' for the next door neighbours daughter Jean-Louis, and lovely Angeline Chorus: Sail on, sail on Jimmy etc In the wee hours of the mornin' we were howlin' at the moon When the mystic wind took Jimmy way up to the mystic room Up up up up up he's gone in peace to save us all Gone with a mystic blessin' from the peaceful pagan ritual Chorus x 2
These differ from the lyrics from the original writer Albert Niland, Christy put his own stamp on it and the lyrics differ slightly by Christy upon different live versions of it :)
Wish i had kept my name i was christened with seamus but the feckers in Finsbury park town hall said that it's a Irish name and had to put James on my birth certificate? ????, and i was born here but love my home land
Just lost my good friend, Jimmy, a retired State Trooper. I found and posted this to his FB page. Love and Respect ... Love you, Jimmy. 😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏

They laid out the body, in the peaceful pagan home
To pay their last respects , all the neighbours came along
In the wee hours of the mornin' pagan words from the whiskey still

Chorus:
Sail on ,sail on, Jimmy
Sail on, Jimmy boy
Sail on , sail on, Jimmy
From this Irish Pagan Ritual
Mad Mary from the crossroads, grabbed my arse for all to see
"I'll tell your fortune, Scoby, if you come on home with me"
"In the name of god now, Mary, some respect for the dead!
You can't be grabbin' arses, at a pagan ritual!"
Chorus: Sail on, sail on Jimmy etc
Father Tim is tellin' Tommy how the Israelites came in
And Tommy's atein' sandwiches that are pilled up next to him
Someone started singing a Revenge for Skibbereen
There's a french lad there translatin' for the next door neighbours daughter Jean-Louis,
and lovely Angeline
Chorus: Sail on, sail on Jimmy etc
In the wee hours of the mornin' we were howlin' at the moon

Another classic from Christy ... is there a back story to this tune ?
Albert Niland wrote it about his uncle, Jimmy.
CHRISTY SAID IT WAS A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY WHO HAD SAILED AWAY , BUT WANTED A BIG WAKE TO MARKING HIS PASSING .
