What did Nancy Pelosi achieve with her visit to Taiwan? | DW News
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 сер 2022
- The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Pelosi was "seriously interfering in China's internal affairs and seriously undermining China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," with her visit to Taiwan this week. Beijing said Pelosi had disregarded China's concerns and resolute opposition to her visit to the self-ruled island, which China claims as its own. The ministry said China would "impose sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family," without giving further details. China also said it was canceling or suspending dialogue with the US on a range of issues - from climate change to military relations and anti-drug efforts - in retaliation for Pelosi's trip.
"We believe that this is fundamentally irresponsible," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in response to the suspension of cooperation on climate change. "They think they're punishing us by shutting down this channel," Kirby said. "They're actually punishing the whole world because the climate crisis doesn't recognize geographic boundaries and borders."

It helps the US economy. The US can sell more weapons to Taiwan!
The USA has been doing that by being involved in many wars so their military contractors will continue to improve speed and quality of production as well as R&D of the products. They sell those as NATO standard thereby lowering costs by mass production. Keep people employed and taxes in the USA. That is why they need wars cos once their military contractors production lines and R&D stop it will be hard to ramp up again.
Someone just wrote a column to remind Americans that military complex may have a capacity issue to keep up with Ukraine, Taiwan, and US's own defense stock.

In case you don't know: Taiwan's official name is ROC(Republic of China). ROC's capital was Nanking(now capital of Jiangsu province), in 1948 KMT lost the civil war with the Communist Party of China(CCP) and flew to Taiwan island. More than 97% residents of the island are Han ethnic Chinese. They speak Chinese and write in Chinese. Many of its presidents swore to retake the mainland and reunite China(so does PRC then and now). The mainland once had the opportunity to take Taiwan back in 1996, but the US stepped in to use Taiwan as a chess piece to contain China. Back then China is weak in every aspect, but now China isn't like what it was. The situation has changed.
+History: Founder of the KMT(Chinese Nationalist Party, now still one of the top two parties in Taiwan) and first president of ROC Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Qing dynasty(last dynasty of China) and held open attitudes toward multi parties including CCP, and many years later his wife Soong Ch'ing-ling became Vice -president of CCP. After Sun's death, Chiang Kai Shek took power in KMT and began to slaughter CCP members. But when Japan started to invade China(1937), the two parties decided to cooperate to defend their motherland together. After winning in 1945, the civil war outbroke again and KMT flew to Taiwan. Nonetheless, back in Chiang Kai Shek's ruling in Taiwan, he would order MPs to shoot one to death if he or she conspired to Taiwan's independence. He said no when Douglas MacArthur planned to nuke the Chinese mainland during the Korean War. Today, American's invisible hands are all over Taiwan, secretly or even openly siding with the separatists, just like it does everywhere around the globe.
The vast majority of Taiwanese have absolutely no interest in being ruled by the corrupt CCP. And they never will be.
And

What did Nancy Pelosi achieve? Instability. Let's say two neighbors basically get along, but are different. One likes to play music, the other likes peace and quiet. If the first neighbor is respectful, they will play music not so loud and not late at night. The second neighbor respects the right of their neighbor to listen to their music. What if another neighbor, who lives far away, says "you have the right to play music as loud and as late as you like". What is the result? Conflict. Anyone who thinks military conflict is justified has never been in war. War is awful resulting in death and destruction. Avoid it, at all costs.

Based on my 15 years in CN (12 years in TW), CN won't initiate military takeover unless: 1. TW government announces independence officially or holds votes (ex: Change /remove ROC) or 2. US provides military arms / support that are out of the scope of defensive usage. The main idea is that unless TW citizens recognize CN themselves, the land will be hard to manage. You can see that this has been demonstrated in how they dealed with HK riot, they didn't send in troups nor respond to what other countries wanted CN to react, and in the end HK citizens themselves had to choose what benefited them more long term. While there are many advocating and siding with independence, CN understands it won't be accomplished if no external support is given, so just cutting off the US will paralyze the functionality of current TW government, and the citizens will have no choice in the long run to stand sides or bear the consequences of "free choice".
Hello Daniel, thank you for your insight. I would like to point out that CN did in fact send troops to be garrisoned outside of HK in Shenzhen and the police and political elite within HK were very much pro unification. As for what is best for HK in the long term, it is too early to say, however, I would recommend you do some research on the exodus of business from the city. I am no expert on this matter, and like I said it is still too early to tell whether HK will be better or worse from reunification.
As for Taiwan, in my opinion both 1 and 2 are inevitable. 1) Taiwanese people see themselves more and more as Taiwanese and will want to reclassify themselves as such. 2) Any weapon that has a range of over 70km will have offensive capabilities in the eyes of the CCP.
I don't think you understand the situation at all. CCP hand picked all the Chief Executives of the city since the handover. They forcefully changed the electoral system so that nothing but CCP loyalists are in the legislative council.
to quote from you "HK citizens themselves had choose..." lol
When thing wasn't right in 2019, more than 2 mils of HK citizens went onto the street to protest for a better future and you all know what happened next.
They didn't need to send troop to HK because they already have the branch of PLA in the current HK police force. PLA also has multiple military facilities in HK, so of course there are PLA troop(s) in HK.

The country that pushes Japanese containment of China is the USA from the 19th century until today.
So can Taiwan really say the USA is their friend? Taiwan now is being used to serve USA imperialist interests. After WW2, the USA broke its promise to return Taiwan back to China.

the problem is obiviously not between Taiwan and China, it is a problem between America and China
Those that fail to study history… In the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895 where the emperor of China ceded Formosa (Taiwan), Korea, the Pescadores islands and the Liaodong peninsula to Japan. Since 1895 Formosa (Taiwan) has not been part of China under international law and ratified by a treaty. If China has a claim that this 1895 treaty is invalid then China theoretically may have the identical right over Korea that they now claim to have over Taiwan. Effectively Taiwan has been an independent country without economic, political or cultural ties with China for the past 73 years and for 54 years prior to that Taiwan was a territorial part of Japan under international law.
In fact, before 1978, the Republic of China (also commonly known as Taiwan) represented China in the United Nations. On the National Day of Taiwan in 1980, what former President Chiang Ching-kuo said was: We are China, we are Chinese. Taiwan thinks it is not China, in fact, started gradually in 2001, after the independence [the Democratic Progressive Party came to power], started the cultural [removal of Chinese influence] action.
This is the same situation that existed between Japan and the USA just prior to Pearl Harbor

The higher the volume and frequency of these exercises makes actual threat detection much less effective.

"What has Nancy Pelosi achieved with her visit to Taiwan?" To show that bullying dictatorships cannot dictate countries what they can and cannot do. In today's world it's more important than ever to stand up to these acts of intimidation instead of creating dangerous precedents that embolden them, like how we did with Russia over the last 15 years. Also, do not emphasize on the election argument which is much more important for western "democracies" then for Chinese meritocracy.
On the other side, the US doesn't want to fight for democracy and freedom in Taiwan. They want to place an American military base on Taiwan to control China behaving and economic traffic.
