I also appreciate his frank admission of the line Taiwan is forced to walk, until they receive a concrete pledge from the US for their defense they're basically hamstrung, not able to shoot down these CCP jets constantly compromising their air space, or the ships that just blockaded them. The CCP has to be confronted. With all of the Wests problems, a world order where China is a superpower is the greatest threat to all the gains of the last 100+ years. In a nation who would rather let 100's drown to avoid paying compensation there is no hope for justice

Minister is absolutely right that unless Taiwan is willing to defend itself, it has no right to expect support from others. I would like to see more concrete steps like spending as the interviewer asked about, and the length of conscription. I'm from Singapore and we are not under the same level of threat, but we have a much bigger commitment to training (twice as long as taiwan?) and spending (3%+ now, was 6% at one point). I think Taiwan is more committed now. I hope recent events will help Taiwan make a bigger commitment to its own defence.

I think China has its own problems internally and I’m not sure how other countries like Japan and South Korea would accept this as it would have a huge affect to the whole of Asia and beyond. We can see how the war in Ukraine has affected Europe in terms of cost of living, energy prices etc. It would seem to me as china would be committing political suicide but now as we stand in 2022 absolutely nothing would surprise me. Excellent comment. I agree in nearly every way. Personally, I think that CHN, RUS, and possibly NKOR are colluding in order to asset some kind of dictatorial "coup" against the world. Against democracy, obviously. They're attempting to strong-arm smaller countries into acceptance and agreement, and... it might work.
Put it this way: just look at Lukashenko in Belarus! He's Puton's pathetic pawn, but he feels empowered, since he can enjoy the riches, b1t¢h3$, property, food, etc. all he wants. Lukashenko is HAPPY to enslave and subjugate the citizens of Belarus.
Shenko is SCARED of Puton in ways that Zelenskyy is not. But when it comes down to it, it's democracy vs. authoritarian/dictatorial rules.

Taiwanese shows the genuine Chinese culture. The authentic Chinese culture had been deliberately cancelled by current China government bit by bit through educating the public their deviated moral and values. What a pity that the western world misinterpreted China’s intentions in the last half of century. This was a very serious mistake that might take decades to fix or the democratic system might even all overtaken by the authoritarians . If the western countries took a closer look to history of the CCP regime, they should know it had killed billion of its people in the past 72 years. That number is even over the aggregations of people killed in all different dynasties rule China before. Inside the veils of current China, the top levels leaders on the hierarchies don’t treat human as human. The worst China will do to the world is not yet come. But that definitely will come.

The US has also had relations with Taiwan since it was the OG government for all of China at one point. Yes Mao overthrew that government but we never cut ties with them after they retreated to the island of Taiwan. I don’t think South Korea and Japan aswell as the Philippines have much of a problem with US support so which Asian countries are “stirring” or upset about the US in the area, I mean it’s been 70 years lol. The military exercise to encircle Taiwan that started on August 4 has already said everything. The three-day exercise has stopped all flights to Taiwan, all foreign ships cannot approach Taiwan, and Chinese warplanes have flown over Taiwan's psychological defense line "the middle line of the Taiwan Strait". , Chinese missiles flew over Taiwan, Chinese warships have almost reached the coast of Taiwan, the most interesting thing is that the US aircraft carrier quickly moved away from Taiwan.
The general trend is already clear. In other words, China has entered the countdown to a complete solution to the Taiwan issue.

Canada once referred to itself as a dominion, while the united states terms it as manifest destiny. Once plentiful native tribes were devastated by disease, war and colonialism. The result is a landscape permanently controlled by colonial standards and control. The natives had a separate identity and culture which was diminished by confiscation of land, forced residential schooling, and loss of representation and control in government.

Arabs colonized the Levant and North Africa. Spaniards and Portuguese colonized Central and South America. Heck, most native people have been exterminated after over 4000 years of war and destruction, starvation and sickness, and natural catastrophes - as you pointed out. We never talk about the Canaanites or the Harla people. But as I mentioned, we are talking about the modern world: the World after 1945, when the UN declaration was signed by all it's members. We can look back in history with a critical approach, sure, but it's not the same sort of issue as the one we’re seeing in Ukraine or Taiwan (or Tibet, for that matter). Tibet and Taiwan were and are self-governed, sovereign nations, during modern times. And this was not the case with native Americans. Also, a major difference between North America (the US and Canada) and China (the PRC), is their treatment of minorities. While the US and Canada, respect and protect the rights of their native people, China most certainly does not.

Fast forward in time, as early as 2020, after a gradual commercial and tourism rapprochement between the islands under Taiwan's control and mainland China, which began in 1992, a tension emerged between Chinese and Taiwanese in relation to the Matsu Islands.
For two years, the Taiwanese government has been complaining about the illegal removal by Chinese vessels of large volumes of sand from maritime areas managed by the authorities of the Matsu Islands. They claim that such activities are threatening the maritime ecosystem around the islands, jeopardizing the safety of submarine telecommunications cables, in addition to increasing coastal erosion and the resulting damage to island residents.
As auctioning seized ships was seen as an easy way for Chinese dredging companies to recover their ships through intermediaries, sinking seized ships was something that was being considered.
These are questions that may seem silly and unimportant. After all, they are just small islands off the coast of mainland China. But because of the small islands, which, it must be considered, have been a thorn in the throat of high-ranking Chinese officials for decades, an unnecessary confrontation could be initiated, as it was in Ukraine, in the Western-financed attack on self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk.
The Chinese Communist Party seems to need a show of force to stay in power. If it is treated internationally with provocation, there may be fears that this provocation will encourage and strengthen political dissent at home.
The immense Chinese bureaucratic and military governmental structure will not remain in power without an apparent honorable, albeit theatrical, role on the stage of international disputes.
The danger is that, in this theatrical performance, a scenographic slap will be given with a greater intensity than expected, and, thus, a generalized fight will start between the different actors of this tragic play that is human history, of which all we are part.
I hope for the best, but I see us all at the foot of a mountain, under a potential avalanche, which could be gradually and carefully withdrawn, through coordinated diplomatic efforts, or come crashing down on us with all its force, fury and destruction. .

Mainland China has around 60 times the population of Taiwan and is technologically much closer to the US. Ukraine has a large land area to defend, Taiwan has a small area. Ukraine has a border with Nato and can receive modern weapons across this border but Mainland China can blockade Taiwan and stop it receiving any weapons. About the only thing in Taiwan's favour is the sea itself. If the CCP are willing to take the huge casualty numbers of an amphibious landing (and it increasingly appears that they are), I don't see how anyone can stop them taking Taiwan.

TAIWAN STATUS: There are no legal bases that give China sovereignty over Taiwan. Between 1912 and 1943, for both the ROC government and the CCP led by the Kuomintang and Mao Sedong respectively, Taiwan or Formosa Island did not exist as part of China; and it was only when China (Kuomintang) received Taiwan in 1945 as a temporarily administered territory that both Communists and Nationalists began to strategically view Taiwan as part of China.
It is worth noting that no one asked the Taiwanese how they felt about it, even though they should, under the UN convention, have had a plebiscite to decide their status, furthermore that sovereignty over Taiwan was never transferred from Japan to any government. "Chinese".
Let's remember, the United States Navy in 1945 transported ROC troops to Taiwan to accept the formal surrender of Japanese military forces in Taipei on behalf of the Allied Powers, as part of General Order No. 1 for the temporary military occupation. General Rikichi Andō, Governor General of Taiwan and Commander-in-Chief of all Japanese forces on the island, signed the receipt and presented it to General Chen Yi of the ROC Army to complete the official rotation. Chen Yi proclaimed that day to be "Taiwan Retrocession Day", but Taiwan and the Penghu Islands were considered by the Allies to be under military occupation and still under Japanese sovereignty until 1952, when the Treaty of San Francisco came into force. Although the Cairo Declaration of 1943 had provided for the return of these territories to China, they had no legal status as a treaty, and also in the Treaty of San Francisco and the Treaty of Taipei, Japan relinquished all claims without specifying to which country they would be handed over. . This introduced the disputed sovereignty status of Taiwan and whether the ROC has sovereignty over Taiwan or only remains over Kinmen and Matsu Islands.
Thus, the Kuomintang regime in Taiwan since 1945 was actually an administrative entity, rather like the Four Powers in Austria, supposedly to administer the island until a peace treaty determined its status. The treaty that settled the war against Japan did not actually do this.
The Kuomintang's claim as the ROC government to sovereignty over Taiwan was illegitimate, not sanctioned by international law or the Right of Self-Determination. Whether democratic change has cemented Taiwan's current regime through some idea of popular sovereignty is an idea that needs to be debated.
Indeed, until 1992 the Taiwanese government was a temporary occupying regime that had illegally claimed sovereignty.
Therefore, NONE of this in any way justifies Beijing's absurd claim to Taiwan. But it's worth noting that the plebiscite that should have determined Taiwan's post-1945 status has yet to happen.
In addition, this plebiscite (unionist or independent), would be a "Right of self-determination of Peoples", a right enshrined by the Decolonization Process in UN resolutions 1514 and 1541.
Historical note: In the history of the island of Formosa (Taiwan), only for 8 years was it officially part of China. Taiwan in the 2,242 years of the history of the Chinese empire, including the communist, HAS ONLY BEEN AN OFFICIAL CHINESE PROVINCE (QING DYNASTY) FOR 8 YEARS AND AS A JAPANESE PROVINCE FOR 126 YEARS. The surrender of Japan in 1945, the 1st. The Republic of China, which had overthrown and succeeded the Qing Dynasty in 1911, took provisional administration of the island of Taiwan. Let us also remember that, in 1895 and for four months, the Republic of Formosa or Taiwan existed, an attempt to become independent during the transition from possession of the island by China to the Japanese empire.

What mr. Wu said is true...
It is worrying indeed. China becomes strong as well economy as military due to naivity of the West when they think that they will share their sciences and knowledges to at the time undeveloped China.

China openly supporting Catalonia or Scotland separation would made separatist to think twice about separation. So if China want to destabilize that countries better do not openly support that movements.

OUR INSURING that Taiwan remains whole and independent with its people, government, and btw super powered chip industry is absolutely paramount strategicly for us to maintain it as an ally and its chips availability to the USA and our allies for all our western high tech militarys and weapons superiority. We must NOT allow Taiwan to fall into the hands of the authoritarian countries China, Russia and their satellites.
Get REAL people we ALL are at war to save our democratic way of life from annihilation by the authoritarian dictators and their dictatorships. Those of you that profess to love freedom have the only chance at gaining and maintaining it through a Democracy.
