@@l.v1473 Most people aren’t jerks and won’t ghost someone just because of their sexuality 😐
@@fluffyplushie16 today yeah, but this show isn’t set in modern day. This season is set in 1985, and it would be totally normal and accepted to ghost her and never talk to her again cause she’s gay. Do I think it’s right? No, of course not, but that’s the truth.
The part where Steve is describing his crush and Robin immediately knew he was talking about her and the way she got frustrated and sad knowing that she'll break his heart is such an emotional scene 🥺
I thinks she's also afraid for herself that he'll end their friendship and tell other people what she said. I was around in the 80s and let me tell you that coming out as a Lesbian in a small Midwestern city would have been a tough journey.
its so amazing because you can tell she loves him and is taken aback by how sweetly he talks about her, but knowing she will never love him romantically
I love how they framed this scene, especially the first half. They're directly facing each other but the toilet partition provides a divide that lets them both express their emotions perfectly: Steve's rising sincerity and Robin's crestfallen despair. It was so bold and unexpected to *NOT* have them end up together (what a swerve) but geez do I love how it developed both of their character's even more.
Stop making this about Steve istg
@@lottegeldof4987 It's about both of them and Steve is the character we've know longer so his development as a person in this moment is just as surprising as Robin's bravery for opening up and making herself vulnerable during such an unsupportive decade. @@SassySiSi Oh so, because she's a 'good' person, she deserves someone now huh? Isn't that what you women say is the exact opposite of frustrated men who get overlooked by women? Funny how that works. Maybe, Tammy deserves to have her own preference or whatever y'all say to justify the superficial nature women have when ignoring men with character who aren't tall enough.

I love Steves character. Homophobia was so bad in the '80s and Steve just shrugs it off and has no problem.

I can practically taste Robin's relief when Steve starts teasing her for her taste in women. that was SO MUCH trust she gave him.
T K No, this show may take place in the 80s but it has a really modern hindsight applied to that time period.
@ yea
imagine coming out and your best friend instantly judges your taste in women
THE1NONLY1 I think by taste in women he didn’t mean the fact that she was gay, just making fun of Tammy
@@Pewds9 it's better than him freaking out, telling your parents, making fun of you, telling your school, beating you up, etc.
A lot of people think Steve’s reaction is bad because he starts ‘criticising’ her choice in women. As someone who is queer, if I came out and I got this reaction, I would feel so much relief. Steve isn’t criticising her. He knows she’s terrified, and he wants to reassure her that it’s okay, and he starts making fun of Tammy to show her that she deserves way better.
I just really love this scene because I hope my friends will have the same reaction when I come out, and I just feel comforted by this.
I’m not gay but I see your username is in a Eastern European language. Godspeed because I know it may be extra scary for you.
I mean it’s not just that it’s the fact he confessed and got rejected at the same time he found out so it’s understandable
I think it’s less that he want to show her that “she deserves better” and more that friends often make fun of each other, but trust each other enough to know they’re joking, so Steve starts poking a little fun at her taste in women in a friendly sort of way to let her know that the friendship is still there and that she doesn’t need to worry.
@@johncouch587 Eastern Europe is not Middle East.
@@nesaroth a lot of it has a much more conservative society than Western Europe. While you wouldn’t be killed or anything, I’d imagine being ostracized is a legitimate fear.
1:32 Maya Hawke’s performance is so good. You can tell she appreciates the fact that Steve likes her, but it hurts her too because she realizes she has to tell him she’s gay.
Bro a girl is a gay? I-i dont understand
@@mugi8833 Gay is also used as an umbrella term for anyone liking the same gender as themselves. So, yes, it applies to girls as well. I hope this could clear up the confusion :)
@@mugi8833 gay just means homosexual, a gay girl is a girl that likes other girls, a gay guy is a guy that likes other guys lol

the absolute hurt you can see in robin's eyes when she realizes that steve likes her is so heartbreaking. you can tell that their friendship means so much to her and she's terrified that by rejecting him she'll ruin it. that's what makes this show and the characters so relatable and loved, because i think we all go through that at some point.
Also probably the fear that her new best friend wouldn't accept hat she's gay... :(
I mean so
Hat shes gay?
capricorny Amazing how you somehow focused all of the attention of Robyn and didn't care at all about how Steve felt.
capricorny are you lesbian?
The way Steve reacts to her confession by making her laugh and being totally cool about it is the best thing ever. Character development y’all
Just imagine how season 1 Steve would've reacted to her coming out.
It just goes to show how much fighting monsters and becoming the official babysitter to a group of preteens can really alter your whole personality for the better!💖😊
Bro I’ll literally never be over his character development 😭
@@stinkyassclown4602 What's funnier is that Steve's development was an accident, since both he and Dustin's plotlines were going nowhere, they just made them cross paths with each other.
Ahal1 lol I started to watch the whole show again after the last episode and omg, it’s crazy how well this show represents character development. I love how at they’re selfish teens who then go through traumatic experiences that in, different ways, teach them that they need to be better people. It’s such and awesome show 🤣
as a lesbian, i relate to Robin so much in this scene. i could just feel the pain in her chest, knowing that she can’t possibly feel the same way and wishing they could’ve just stayed best friends. i wish i had a friend like steve, because most of the times this happened to me, they didn’t take it nearly as well. especially since steve was born in the 60’s, it’s amazing how kind and accepting he is in comparison to people i know who were born in the 2000’s
You're valid af, stay strong, you'll find a good friend soon!
I mean it is a show but i think in general someone from the 60s would take it way worse compared to someone from the 2000s
people can so beautiful and lovable until they think theres something wrong w you and they start acting insane to the point you don't know them anymore
@@rhysstanley7387 I think it depends on the person
Like, Steve seems like the kind of person who would really accept her and love her anyway, or at least, Steve from season 3-4 and maybe 2 (I don't think the Steve from season 1 would be this open and great)
It's a really rare thing probably between people of that eras, but he seems the exception
Like now there are people who are like this, so more open and who don't find anything wrong with it and people who find it a taboo or something terrible
(I hope there aren't grammar mistakes here, I'm not a native speaker so sorry in advance in case I made any)
@City Beautiful Adventures yeah that thing wasn't that great of him... Even though it was probably his way to say "stay safe"
A very bad way to say "stay safe" but still a way
Luckily they didn't kill him before... The new Steve is one of the best characters ever and I'm really happy they made him grow up like that
This is literal perfection in writing and direction. Steve is perfectly written and Robin was the perfect edition. This is maybe my favorite scene in anything ever. Absolute perfection
I should also add that Dixon and steins music is what elevates this to even higher level
Also Maya Hawke’s acting is just perfect. You can see all the emotions she’s feeling in her face, and really feel the fear in her voice. She’s a wonderful actor.
You can see Robin is struggling so hard. She knows she's going to break Steve's heart, but she has to tell him the truth because she really loves him and knows he deserves honesty. And Steve handles the situation sooo brilliantly. This scene is so touching, sad and relieving at the same time. Masterpiece.

@swegga.331 total eclipse of the heart
That soft "Steve" after he says Tammy Thompson's a girl has me in shambles. She was so terrified of what he would say, that he would reject her and she'd lose her friend, ugh. Great acting.
I love how when Steve realises Robin is gay, he just carries on talking with her instead of being upset she doesn't like him back. Instead of teasing her being gay, he teases her choice in women. And this is the same guy who made a homophobic slur in S1
he did? woah, definition of character developed
Best character development in the show
Would being upset be so bad though? It's perfectly natural and understandable to be upset if someone you're into doesn't like you back.
Agent Z46 yes, yes it would, you can’t expect them to naturally grow feelings for you and then getting mad at them is probably the douchiest (wow what a word) thing to do

@@_maddie_makes_music HI
Riy Btl agreed her eyes at 4:16 are all red
To me the best part isn’t even that she came out and he’s cool with it.
It’s that he poured his heart out to her, basically confessing his love, and then she revealed that not only does she not feel that way about him; she never will - never CAN, even - and he not only accepts it; he immediately starts joking with her like he didn’t just get his heart stomped on (again).

@HammerBann but... he didn't know she was gay then? that was before this scene.

They’re so cute together, I’m convinced they are soulmates just not romantic, rather platonic soulmates
Media when male and female are hinting to romantic interest: haha no they're platonic, in fact the woman is gay and the guy is a soy drinking beta male so he continues his friendship with her
Media when male and male have a platonic friendship: they are GAY and will express it in a GAY shy timid way. And then we will introduce homophobic characters that end up becoming GAY and joining a monkeypox orgy with the two GAY men
Tldr; Hollywood sexualizes male platonic friendships and platonizes male-female relations.
Twin Flames is the proper term.

Btryx why was robin acting weird when she met nancy
@@edincehic864 No. It comes naturally cause it is not a big deal. He doesnt have to throw in the jokes.
@@svenr.3803 I think it's a little bit of both. On the one hand, Steve has come such a long way from the arrogant, judgemental d-bag he was in season 1, so it is totally in character that he would be so accepting of Robin regardless of her sexuality or the fact that she didn't reciprocate his romantic feelings for her. On the other hand, he probably understands on some level that coming out to someone (especially back then in middle America) is / was a pretty big deal, and ripping on her choice of crush is his way of showing that nothing has changed between them. Without explicitly saying so Steve is showing Robin that he accepts and supports her, because that's what friends do.
Her face when she knew she was going to have to break his heart and possibly lose him as a friend omg my heart
I know. Its almost like in that moment she wanted to be attracted to him so that she wouldn't lose him. Because she does love him...just not romantically. That actress is amazing. Her face conveys all those emotions.

@@bigboulder I don't think this was any kind of gut punch for Steve. His crush is unrequited, sure, but he obtains a best friend which is in many ways what he needed as a character. It also directly shows character growth compared to how he was dealing with rejection in the first season. this is the most beautiful coming out scene ever in history Steve's reaction after this made the whole thing more adorable
It's an iconic scene.
Steve goes from calling Johnathan a 'queer' in season 1 to having a lesbian best friend in season 3/4. That is character development.

Robin assuming he wouldn’t want to be her friend if he knew the truth gets me every time. This is so well written and acted. The chemistry between Maya and Joe is perfect as these two chaotic well meaning friends.
As if anyone needed another reason to love Steve Harrington, he showed he was the most comforting person and could defuse a very painful personal and heartfelt situation in the blink of an eye.
If they kill him off, im seriously walking on this show, despite how great it really is.
Steve didn’t need a girlfriend, he needed a best friend. And he got one.
a lesbian bestfriend**** - from a fellow lesbian
Yeah, I’m happy he made friends with robin, they have sm chemistry and a rlly good dynamic
I still hope he finds true, forever-lasting love in S4 or S5
He needs a girlfriend that is also a best friend. I mean, that's the best kind of partner.
Ma boi Dustin getting disrespected
the way robin just desperately looks to steve with water in her eyes after he says “but she’s a girl” is heartbreaking, but the soft “oh” he says after he realizes is so kind and understanding. him being supportive of her just is another clarification that steve harrington is an angel among men

I love how Steven didn’t judge Robin for being a lesbian, instead he judged her taste in women. What a Cute Scene
I haven’t watched this scene in so long and I wanna cry their friendship is the most purest I’ve ever seen. I love them so much
the look on robin's face as she realizes he's talking about her is tragically relatable :(
the guilt of a guy liking you when you’re a lesbian is unreal, but steve dealt with it so well and i’m glad they chose to redeem him :))
I felt bad for the both of them, but they handled it well. Robin knowing she was the attention of Steve’s affection then having to let him know how she truly felt and Steve not having the best of luck with girls the entire season and when he finally thinks he found the one then it’s revealed that she likes girls and he has no chance, but in the heat of the moment they joke as friends. It’s a truly emotional scene in my eyes for the both of them.
RIGHT?!?!??? I’ve never seen that so realistically portrayed on screen. Infact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it PERIOD! But I’ve been through it so many times. So many guys who are about to ask me out and I just have that “oh fuck” moment like “I’m about to crush this poor boy’s soul”
@@shaybrown7355 Yeah, I completely agree. There is sometimes where we just have to accept things and people for how they are, no matter how hard we fall for them. I’m excited to see how they continue Steve and Robin’s storyline, I just hope that both of them are able to get their happy endings for season 4. Who truly knows, maybe Robin and Steve can help each other get girlfriends? I’d love to see that honestly, or Steve coming to grapple with his feelings for Robin, but still being there for her as a best friend even though he feels more attached to her than just as a friend.
aww:(

it's so natural on unfathomable levels.
This is one one the perfect scenes in Cinematography.
"She couldn't stop starring at you"
It's amazing how much compassion is in Steve's heart. He dindn't judge her as a lesbian. What could have been a moment of anger or frustation was truly a moment of laugheter and compassion. I love Steve. ❤❤❤
Steve’s reaction seems pretty spot on for the time this takes place. You can kinda tell that he either has never met a gay person or perhaps he at one point bullied one back when he was a douche. His reaction is a mix of surprise, confusion but also acceptance
Juan Jaramillo pretty sure he called Johnathon a “queer” in s1 so yh this is good character development
Not only that, but he makes fun of who she crushes on and not her,
It's like, he's still the Steve we love, he's just come further in a good way without changing completely
it also shows that when someone makes the argument of "Well, he was just a product of his time" to explain away homophobia or other bad stuff, it's just utter bullshit. Steve, who started out as a vapid '80s douchebag, nonetheless has a good heart, which is something that transcends the societal hang-ups of any era.
yeah!

Steve accepting her for being gay after he just expressed his love for her is truly amazing. Just shows how close they are as friends, and Steve still willing to be friends with her is amazing, especially during that time.
Side note: Honestly, I can see them making an agreement like “hey, if we both don’t get married by 30, we will just marry each other for government benefits.”
Her nervousness is so well acted
robin: I’m lesbian
steve: what does it mean?

The music in the background the with the kinda hopeful melody kinda symbolizes how all her worry got overrun by relief when he started joking abt it and her laugh is one I can fully identify with. I know that feeling and it is so freaking good. This scene makes me smile so uncontrollably when I watch it
they have such good chemistry, this feels exactly like a conversation id have with my best friend

@@boobiesexmachine I’m interested in this story. Could you explain more?
This may be the most well-written scene in the history of Netflix
Agreed. I can't think of any other single scene from any other Netflix original that instantly won me over this hard, and that's saying something. It's the perfect confluence of expert cinematography and blocking, character development, relationship development, dialogue, score, acting and pacing, not to mention being perfectly adept social commentary and progressive in its normalcy and rawness. It's essentially a three act short condensed into six minutes (and yet, rich and generous in its length in the context of a television episode, especially for a show like Stranger Things). Plus it's the moment people go from liking Robin to loving Maya Hawke, because at least in this show, this is her shining moment and she knocks it out of the park. Personally, I'd have loved for her to get an Emmy nod out of this, because it's a masterclass of understatement and expressionism. Everything about this is a masterclass. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if professors showcase this in television writing classes.
Jonathan Guito Jesus thats a long paragraph but i totally agree!
@@jonathanguito1168 yes I agree too. this is better than most of my essays lmao. very well said
the actors actually wrote it themselves!! the producers originally were setting up robin and steve to be a couple but the actors weren't feeling it so they workshopped this and in the end it stayed in the final cut
Sir I'd like you to watch Sense8.
steve and robin's chemistry is so moving in this series literally gonna cry if something happens to either of them
Such a great moment. You can tell how much Robin loves Steve, but also knows they can't be together, and also is scared of hurting him and coming out at the same moment. Just a raw, beautiful moment. And Steve accepts this, and also comforts her coming out in the most Steve way possible. These 2 are the best part if stranger things
I love how they didn’t make her being gay her whole personality, and just part of it. They wrote it so well. I also love how they didn’t use the stereotype of the boy-girl friendship turning into romance
I agree, robin is extremely well written but man i just want my boi steve to be happy and find love!
Stranger Things is really good at breaking stereotypes and that's one of the reasons I like it. Like back in season 1 I thought Hopper was going to be one of those adults who doesn't listen to the kids at all and thinks they are just making up all the stuff so that the kids have no choice but to solve the mystery by themselves. Instead Hopper became one of the main characters who also tries his hardest to solve the mystery and that was definitely a good thing.
Stereotype? Relationships can only start one of two ways: boy and girl meet and immediately start dating or they become friends and then start dating. I think you mean rom-com trope.
the writers actually did plan to make robin and steve a couple, but the actors didn't feel it so they workshopped this scene and the producers ended up liking it so much that none of it was cut
Honestly as I was watching this the first time, I thought that this was going to be a love confession scene and I was just like... :/ this feels so cheesey and cliché?? But okay ig, they wouldn't be an awful pair. Soooo happy they did this instead, also was lowkey hilarious watching my parents get all uncomfortable bc of unexpected gay.
Steve is the best-developed character in stranger things. Total jerk to sweetheart. love it.
Just goes to show that good-hearted people can be corrupted by their asshole friends. That was pretty much a significant reason why he was a jerk in S1 - his friend group was a bunch of asshats, and that's how he was too. Thankfully, he learned.

Love that after revealing their inner thoughts and feelings the music starts to build up when Steve shows that he still wants to be her friend and she naturally follows his lead because they truly are Best Friends.
This is one of the most heartwarming scenes I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
Robins face when he starts revealing that he likes her, and she knows that she’s gonna have to break it to him, is PURE GOLD MAYA IS SO TALENTED
And how risky it is for her to come out to the former school's resident douchebag in the 80s. Huge leap of faith, he could have ruined her life the next day.

That is the equivalence of getting left on seen
Robin's emotions are joyfully explored in this scene, but it's worth saying that this is also a turning point for Steve. I think he really shows his maturity in this moment. Instead of being distraught by Robin's rejection, he digests it and lets it wash right over him. Their friendship outweighs any fleeting romantic disappointment. He embraces it for what it is, accepting and adapting like an emotionally intelligent adult. It's like he's really, finally left high school behind.
Being chased by psychic monsters and secret agents surely gives you perspective on what's important in life.
Preach! And what makes it even better is that the reason why he forced himself to get over the rejection so fast is because he could see in how much distress she was - scared that only he will stop being friends with her, but also that he could go into some sort of homophobic freakout and start insulting her, maybe even attack her, or that he could tell everyone and turn her into a total social outcast for the whole Hawkins. Sad as it is, this is a small american town in the 80's after all.
Exactly
Violet Raven and they were super superrrr homophobic at the time the show was set so it would actually be normal for him to go on a whole rant.
That's one of the reasons Robin is an important character; she helped prove how much Steve has truly grown.
Elena S M CANONICO I think the same thing might happen to Will, it was hinted he was gay earlier in the season by Mike saying “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls.” But I’m not sure about thsi
People who say that the sudden change for him to become a supporter of LGBTQ after being against it in season 1 makes no sense are wrong.
I think the biggest reason for his sudden change as that he was the popular kid in school, none of his friends were LGBTQ he thought only the weird kids were.
And now he’s become friends with someone who was unpopular in school, realized how cool she is and how popularity doesn’t mean anything, and now realizing that Robin is gay he’s gonna support it because he cares about her. Sometimes it takes a personal experience for you to be invested in something.
For example someone who came from nothing would be a lot more likely to help the poor than someone who’s always been very rich.
Agree ❤
i come back to this scene a lot, i think its become like a comfort one for me - especially the part where music starts playing towards the end, its chefs kiss
