Making Boxelder syrup

Did the sap have any smell to it?
I got a boxelder growing right next to my house that needs to come down. But i had a itch to know more about the tree. Trying to live a more natural and self-sufficient lifestyle. So learning what I have around my ecosystem is a must.
Also do your think flavor varies depending on how much you render it down?

No breaks. Removed and Cleaned and ready for next year. Will be getting another pack of taps
