  • Today I explain what a limiter is, why we use one and how to use one to make sure your music sounds the best it can for digital distribution such as Spotify and iTunes!
Here's some relevant links for everything I mentioned in the video:

Hey, my name's Josh and I'm a mastering engineer at Viking Lounge Mastering and apart of the audio team at Tommirock Studios. I want to make videos that help you on your audio journey so you can release better quality music! Let me know if there's any topic you want to know about in regards to audio, production, recording, mixing or mastering and I'd be happy to make a video about it.

    2023 UPDATE:
I just watched this video back 2.5 years later to make sure it still holds up, which I think it generally does (although my delivery was soooo awkward this long ago I found it hard to watch myself haha). I'd like to make a newer version of this video but for now, one thing i want to add is be sure to use reference tracks while deciding your final limiter gain. I believe it's important to know where your music sits in relation to other commercially released songs.

Search “TC finalizer” to see all the charting hits true peak values. Almost all of them go over 0, some go WAY over 0. Just set your final limiter ceiling to -0.3db (don’t use true peak mode) and don’t worry about ISP/True peaks. At the end of the chain, try Oxford inflator (100% effect, curve to taste, (0% to start) band split engaged) into a soft clipper (1-3db), into a hard clipper (0.5-1db), into 1-2 limiters doing an equal amount of limiting. If using 2 limiters, make sure the first limiter ceiling is 0, and that you match the output so that there’s no volume change when on/off. The volume will come from the final limiter.

Great explanation of the reason why it's best to set the ceiling to 0.3dB. I'd love to see a video about LUFs for digital formats!

Yes! I plan to do a metering video separately actually. I was thinking about doing it in the same video but seemed like information overload

Thanks so much! My plan for future videos is to mostly focus on high quality mastering tutorials or walkthroughs so that should help you out 🙂

Nice one thanks for this video! I learn't a lot, didn't know one could check before hand how the master will sound on each platform. Awesome outboard gear you have there btw! At the moment i'm doing some diy mastering using the stock plugins within Logic but planning to get the SLL Fusion at some point soon! Thanks again :)

Thanks. Great if you can do a video about how you do and think when mastering in a hybrid setup, what levels going out from DA to analog gear and what level coming in to AD, that kinda stuff would be great. I know it depends on what gear and the song but in general. Best/ Mathias

That’s a great idea! I could do a gear/studio tour and run through the setup.
