The lyrics are actually a poem that was written by rod McEwen and it is simply about a man who is dying and bidding his loved ones goodbye!!! I love your reactions and I look forward to the next one keep up the good work !!!
I don't think I've seen one reaction where the reactor gets the true meaning of the song. The music is light and bouncy, but the lyrics are heart-wrenchingly sad.
As a kid, I thought this was the saddest yet happiest record about death ever to grace the top the UK chart. The song tells of a dying man who has made his peace with loved ones and ultimately, the world and no question 'Seasons in the Sun' remains a melancholy classic.
This is the third reaction to this song where the reactor misses the line "IT'S HARD TO DIE." The man is about to DIE. He's saying goodbye. He's terminally ill. He's making peace. He has a little time left on earth. He's buttoning it up. He's closing the loop. He's tying up the loose ends. He's arranging for his own demise. He's fucked. He's... well. you get it.
I just love your positive soul! As others have pointed out, the song is about a dying man saying goodbye to the people he loves. The lyrics to the song have an interesting history. It was actually a retelling of a French song by a Belgian poet-composer called "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man"). In that song, the story was of an old man who was "dying of a broken heart" because his best friend was making love to his wife. The lyrics were translated to English by poet Rod McUen and in 1964 the Kingston Trio released the first English language version. Terry Jacks heard this English version and used it as the basis/inspiration for his version of the song (If memory serves, Terry Jacks' version was released sometime around 1974). I'd post a link, but I think my songfacts links get deleted in UA-cam comments. But if you do a google search for this song and the word "songfacts" it should take you there. The story is quite interesting.

'The Guy From Art and Garfunkel'...was it...Simon...Paul Simon'. That is by far the funniest and cutest line to ever come from a reviewer. 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for making me smile on a bad day girl.
This song literally has ripped my guts out since It first came out. It feels like a punch in the stomach as we lose our time on earth. Not sure you get it.
I get it. (now) Even though being familiar with the song since it's release, it took me until adulthood (and parenthood), to really let the lyrics sink in- it's very moving, despite the semi-upbeat melody.
I noticed you smiling throughout the song-did you not hear the line where he says, "goodbye my friend it's hard to die"? This is a bouncy tune, but the lyrics are about a man who is dying, who is saying goodbye to family and friends.
I think the Michelle of the song is the man's daughter. And, as other people have commented, it's about a dying man saying his goodbyes (to his childhood friend, his father, and his young daughter).
I was 8yrs old when this came out. It reminds me of playing with my twin brother in the woods, lakes and trails we grew up in. He passed away this past December just before Christmas. It is the most painful hurt I have ever know, RIP Brother! I miss you so much. 😭🕯️☮️☯️✝️✡️
I was 12 years and lost my best friend that year in 1974. I got the message like you did when you were 8. Maybe as children we can't see beyond the pain of losing someone until we get older and learn to accept how fate is just a natural part of living.
This is the saddest song ever. Not only is he dying young, before his papa, he's dying soon with the realization that he won't make it past this season, a good time, good weather, happy children, pretty girls, and all the birds singing in the sky. You can feel the breeze and smell the spring air in this song. He has come to terms with it and taking it all in and thanking all of his friends and loved ones before he goes.
Yet she and others her own age who've reviewed this same song tapped their toes with glee and had fun with the song. Go figure. Maybe I would do the same if I missed the message of some of the songs today.
I remember bringing this 45 into kindergarten for show and tell-yeah I'm that old now. I used to love this song so much when I was a child. It probably brought me to tears.
No... you didn't get it. I'm sorry, but it went right over your head. The song is sung from the perspective of a man who is dying from a terminal illness. He is saying goodbye to those people. It's a pretty straightforward song... not exactly cryptic lyrics. He literally said "It's hard to die" three times.

The first version of the song was recorded by Jacques Brel, who also wrote it in a brothel in Tangiers. Sung in a marching tempo, it tells of a man dying of a broken heart and shows him saying his last farewells to his close friend Emile, a priest friend, an acquaintance named Antoine, and his wife who has cheated on him numerous times with Antoine (Wik) ... always enjoy your reactions and especially when you start dancing along (guilty pleasure 839) 💕
