it was obviously a scripted race, you can see the bike pulling away in the twisty uphill and downhill segments, and yet, in the next shot the car's right back on it's tail. gotta make it look interesting for the camera
Having owned a 1st and 2nd gen X5, they really are that tough, can not comment on the new stuff but the 1st gen was and still is as tough as nails, a real tank.
Hey guys, videographer here. Ditch the vignette effect. Has a purpose but not for an action sequence or for that long. He was having fun driving that car.
I’m totally with you as far as modern productions but in the context of what they were trying to do and competing against the juggarnaut that was Top Gear, this was a totally competent style decision.
What a load of bollocks!!! There is NO WAY a 3ton 4x4 can beat a rally prepared motor bike especially on such terrain! This is a just dramatised TV advert for BMW!!

I don't know about the newage Dakar race....but BMW has always been the hero of Dakar rally of 80s...Gastan rahier is one hell of a rider in his r80 gs...

If you read Charley's book about his race, he talks about the mods to both the bike and the car. The car was a bit of a compromise, as they wanted to go BMW as there was sponsorship with the bike things, but the timelines limited what could be done, so the X5 was done sort of up, but not as complete as Charley would have liked. It's a good read. I really liked the bit when the rider on the old XT500 comes along. I used to ride an XT500, so I really enjoyed that story.

the vignetting they do is possibly the most sickening thing ever. Black on one side, then the other, then the top then the corner . . . Hate it.
Yeah, it's actually a camera lense. It works really well, when they use it once or twice during a film, but fucking 100000 times?
The constantly changing camera angles and panning and changing is a bit much!
and people say the x5 not good for anything off road, and they basically just changed the tire and make it a lot heavier.
Tiff is a fockin nutter! The way he was pushing that X5 on the bends.. God almighty, I so would've shat my pants on the near flip, and he was fockin laughing? The man's got some steel balls, that's for sure!

but think about the stresses on the car, its unbelievable they can take this kind of abuse for the whole rallye and keep going.
This looked like a lot of fun. I always love using vehicles for NOT their intended purpose.

anyone knows whats the purpose of the straight pipes on the X5? save weight?
If you're looking at the exhaust, it's because it's a race truck and off road only, so no need for mufflers and catalytic converters. Plus, good chance this is turbocharged, which helps to muffle the sound of the engine a little bit.
Charlie Boorman damaged the bike pretty badly during that race ..not to mention breaking both arms while at it. Did they fix the bike properly? Race result makes me think maybe not.

bikes are better than cars off-road for the simple reason that when push comes to shove you can carry - light - motorcycles and you'll do less damage due to low weight. On a smooth dirt road it might me another matter. Yes, you can winch a jeep and your buddy can pull you out of the mud but there are many places off road where you need the small size, or the ability to pull an enduro bike up a cliff side with ropes - places that simply you can't think of traversing with a jeep.
Would have been much better without the human soundtrack during the race, y'know?

+pordiosero80 basically it's tje same engine. Maybe they have modified it a bit to produce more HP. The exhaust is a sebring as far I can see.
F650 is plenty powerful to beat the x5 without mods
F650gs is a great lightweight enduro bike, comfortable at 80 mph on the highway or offroad single track, mud and sand. Very fun bike.

ONLY REASON THE bdw keept up with the bike was because the track was not flat corners were at a slope alowing the bmw to run through them alot faster if the track would be perfect flat bmw would have been slower still it was a nice race

NotIrishRider the car have over 445 horsepower, i didn't watch the begining so i do not know if he using the v8 x5 which is 445 horsepower, or x5m which is 555 horsepower, or v6 which is 300 horsepower, or diesel version.....but I assume the x5 have more horsepower then the bike

That bike is too heavy for offroad a race prepared ktm 690 Enduro would have done much better.

virus468 "Performance" is not strictly a function of engine power, it depends on the type of race. No inline liter bike could perform as well as a 650 on that course. If we were talking about the Isle of Man, then yes a liter bike would win. How old are you? 12?
