    YES! THIS! THIS! A MILLION TIMES THIS!
    Homeless people don't need charity, they need WORK! Give them jobs to do, pay them, help them escape poverty, and in such a way that they're helping themselves! I can personally attest that it's hard as hell to find work when you live at a homeless shelter. Employers look up your mailing address, see it's a shelter and instantly tear up your application.

      I have this dream that every young man in South Chicago is offered a job to travel to the Western United States and work in a Civilian Conservation Camp (CCC) like they had back in the 30's. Help re-plant the forests burned in the fires. Build wing dams and boon covers on streams. Repair hiking paths. Imagine the pride they'll have, knowing the money they send home will help their families. Imagine a strong alternative to gangs, as a way to earn a living. Imagine little kids playing in the streets of Chicago, instead of being sent to their Auntie's place up north in Wisconsin every summer, just to be safe. I do. I believe in these young men. Just give them a job.

      +Paul Berevoescu I think the more important point is that many of the homeless want jobs and can do them. Social Security should cover the disabled even though it doesn't always. But more importantly even the disabled should be able to work if they want to which means providing jobs that work around those peoples disabilities.

    • @ThatFlamingFroggo
      @ThatFlamingFroggo 6 років тому

      Hijiku Brynjar I think that as much as some homeless folks need charity, some need jobs. Not all have the ability to work as many there need aid for physical and mental health. I think trying to help those that can work get a job is vital as helping those who can't currently work.

    • @Furiends
      @Furiends 6 років тому

      +Paul Berevoescu I know! Notice I never put the onus on the disabled. I said `should` as in there needs to be more economic incentives to create jobs that work around disabilities as well as subsidies them (because even a disable person deserves the dignity of being able to work and contribute). It's not always possible but its certainly a lot more possible save for the fact that capitalism rules a lot of those opportunities out as you alluded to. My point is similar to the case for the Special Olympics. But even further than that in some cases just specific job criteria and technology being provided could allow someone who's disabled to work with the same productivity as everyone else. You wouldn't go around saying Steven Hawking is a dumb cripple. But think about why that is.

      Hijiku Brynjar I agree that many homeless people can work, and most of them would prefer working.
      However, many of us suffer from mental illnesses and can't work consistently. We work when we can, but there may be times when it's simply impossible. At such times, we need help.

  • @wwondertwin

    Do they also sell these coats? These would be fantastic for people who like camping etc. And by selling coats they can hire more homeless people, train more homeless people and get more people off the streets without impacting the need for these coats.
    And damn well get a patent on this coat, so that some multinational sportswear company doesn't come and snatch the product idea.

    This is amazing, not only do they get a job, learn a skill, earn money to become independent because of their OWN work, but they are paying it forward to people who are in their old position. I LOVE that they change colors so there is no “homeless uniform”..... just amazing people helping people help themselves

    This kind of work can be done remotely from home too. We should be giving the homeless (once they have a place again) and the unemployed tools like sewing machines and supplies for making things like this, photovoltaic solar cells and a soldering iron for assembling solar panels from home, etc, etc.

    I am loving this trend I am seeing of businesses that have some form of charity built into their business model. It gives me hope for our society to see the businesses not only start but succeed. Because that means that the general public wants to support these businesses. Yes we are in a very conflicted time period as a country, but seeing businesses like this again not only start but succeed means that we are making progress. Slowly yes, but in some areas we are going forward. That doesn't mean we stop working towards making things better, but it helps remind me that what we are working for is achievable and reachable. We just have to keep working at it.

    I really hate to knock any project aimed at ameliorating the suffering of the homeless.
    That said, this is a half measure (undeniably better than none) but getting them off the streets and into small, basic one room apartments has been shown to be economically cheaper than having them out on the streets.
    That's the real solution we need.

    • @Onyx-Rose150
      @Onyx-Rose150 6 років тому +3

      HARDCOREgmr4lyf your solution helps, but only halfway. Getting people to be economicly active members of society is the ideal.

    • @missplasticpony
      @missplasticpony 6 років тому +10

      Onyx Rose bullshit , giving people stable living conditions FIRST is the solution. This is how us Germans , British & Scandinavian have been doing it and it works ! People are more obliged to be stable members of society when they have stable living conditions. It's cheaper than ALL the money being wasted instead on Police dealing with the crime stemming from this problem, Social workers, soup kitchens , making jackets like this and so on .......To keep these people working and in business, there have to be homeless people which again is the main problem in this whole concept!

    • @horaciogonzalez4284
      @horaciogonzalez4284 6 років тому +2

      It's true that it's only a half-way solution, but one of the benefits of having a job is that you can actually get an apartment, many places won't let you get an apartment unless you've gotten a paycheck in the last month. And many sources of employment won't hire you unless you have a residence. It's not a perfect solution, but it does help them out of that catch-22.

    I'm now living in a situation in which being homeless is actually making my job search more difficult. I was employed as a caregiver while I was squatting. However, I had to move and ended up sleeping on the front porch of a church, eventually losing my client to death. When you have to take your belongings everywhere with you, including your beloved canine companion, it becomes increasingly more difficult to remain mobile. It's made even worse when money is necessary in order to take care of basic needs that need to be covered in order to be available for employment. I now understand what it really feels like to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. :(
    Most Unhoused citizens, just like me, don't want to be homeless. We want to work and we want to be able to support ourselves. I challenge anyone, conservative or liberal, to try this kind of living for just a day and see if they can still make the same claims about the social safety nets being a bad idea.

    What a great idea, I'm glad she didn't just get angry being yelled at. I'm thinking that this kind of coat might also work as an emergency coat for outdoor activities, if the coat was also shower/ waterproof: sometimes I would get my sleeping bag out when stopping for a lunch when hiking in the hills during cold weather. It was cumbersome to take out and put back into my backpack.

      My guess is that they prioritise homeless mothers. That is what the "ending generational poverty" bit was about as far as I understood it.
      Getting the mom out of poverty gets her kids out too. Which, in terms of maximising your effect and making it long-term, is a sound strategy.

    • @Furiends
      @Furiends 6 років тому +1

      What +Colonel 100 just said. It's an interesting dynamic. Sadly it does make sense to give priority to moms considering their partners left them. But I am sure there are also cases where the mom and the dad are homeless or at least still together. Maybe this company takes that into consideration? On the other side of it shelters prioritizing woman kinda sucks (although it makes sense if they have children with them). I actually think only the latter is the case in a lot of shelters. But again if you think about it this probably bears out those patterns. If a woman loses her job and has a kid she's going to be more likely to end up homeless etc.

    The powers that be would try to make us believe the most negative things about other people while I see the most despicable not coming from the bottom but the top. American needs to rethink how we view things because we are missing the truth on so many thing, the saying goes, Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime.

    I've been saying for years upon years that place is like Detroit when they have whole neighborhoods of dilapidated housing that they're just bulldozing there could be a government program or even a state-funded program to get homeless people on job training refurbishing these old houses and living in them as payment and they could work their way through the neighborhood making a minimum wage salary plus free housing but instead they'll bulldoze all those houses and let the entire infrastructure go to waste so if anyone ever wants to build on it again they have to start from scratch what a waste.

    • @Furiends
      @Furiends 6 років тому

      I agree with your sentiment. But it depends on the situation. For example newer homes have huge cost savings in terms of insulation so the HVAC isn't working as hard, older homes rely on baseboard heating a lot which are massive energy hogs.
      Siting a home, getting utilities in, building a foundation and framing is a better cost comparison since those older homes probably would need all dry wall, insulation, plumbing and wiring replaced and chances are high the roof needs replacement.
      The idea that its a waste especially considering that most people don't necessarily have the expertise to do wiring, plumbing or roof work the issue comes down to the fact that its easier in a builder or developers mind to rebuild the houses and probably bigger to reach a more gentrified home buyer but yet theres no housing to reach in between. That is to build new cost effective homes on land that is at a premium. The issue probably has less to do with the improvements (the houses themselves) and more to do with land value because that extends to what the developer thinks prospective home buyers will pay.
      There's also the issue that providing housing to unemployed people and cramming them all in one place tends to cause a lot of auxiliary issues directly and indirectly which begs for public housing to be scattered site and instead get subsidy from state and local governments for either the rent or the mortgage. Or paid down or off rent in an otherwise upscale apartment complex.
      Keep in mind a big reason poverty exists in a capitalist system is because the long tail of wealth gets cut off frequently. As peoples living standards rise up on average those at the bottom have no possible way of claiming up anymore. The only truly honest and dignified solution to that is to socialize it and not just provide job opportunities like this but rapidly move those in lower economic statuses into higher ones.
      P.S. As an aside this same effect is happening to the middle class itself in the form of wealth sequestration thanks to deregulation, corporate consolidation and tax cuts. But technically that all amounts to the same thing. Corporations even if they have a profit motive `should` be providing for the people they serve and regulation isn't regulation against us its regulation for us thats usually going to save lives, time and money.

    I have a job that involves interacting with the homeless. While there those who became homeless simply because they lost their job, a huge number have mental illness/personality disorder complicated by substance abuse and absolutely no insight into their own decisions. While these people will take whatever you are offering them while telling you what you want to hear, they have no desire to get "back on their feet". Obviously the leaders of this organization have some skill and experience in managing people in this group. I would like to hear them speak candidly about how they hold them to account and get them to have higher expectations of themselves.

    I don't understand, how do they make any money? I mean seriously. I'm not talking about profits, I mean how do they pay these people? Their products are for people who can't buy them. Do the shelters buy them or something? Where is the cash flow coming from? Is it entirely donations from sponsorships? Is the municipality chipping in? If so, wouldn't it be more productive to just create a jobs program, give all the homeless jobs fixing the deteriorating buildings in Detroit, in turn creating new housing which these people will now be able to afford because they have a job? I don't mean to knock this non-profit but the final goal is to eliminate homelessness right? So why are they creating clothing that is only useful to the class of people that they are trying to eliminate? It just seems silly. I think a cooperative company structure similar to that of the Evergreen Cooperatives in Cleveland is much more efficient at increasing the wealth of the lowest economic classes in our country.

    I feel bad for people that reached rock bottom, but just remmember= every time you think there is no way to go - there allways is a way maybe not the way you currently want but there allways is a way and if you live a life with that mentality soon you will find a way you were searching hoping for, step by step day by day towards a better way

    Hold on a minute, this is a brilliant idea but are they only hiring homeless women? What about the homeless men that make up the majority of the homeless population? Are they hired in different positions? Is there another but equivalent charity organization for them? How does this work? Does every homeless person have an equal shot at this opportunity?

      My internet is messing up so I cannot get the video to work correctly, but maybe they provided a website or a place where there is more information about the program???

    Are there any laws in the US preventing the organisation from using the coats to make money to fund their operations and not having to rely so much on donations? I was just thinking that something like this would be ideal for walkers who might one day need to get rescued off a mountain. Around here, you get several people getting caught up without proper gear in bad weather on the mountains every year.

      Since the homeless don’t have access to birth control, can’t afford abortions, have the right to have sex, and have no lock to prevent others from raping them while they are sleeping out on the street or in shelters, yes, the homeless have kids.

    The vast majority of the homeless are men and many of them are veterans. Don't they need and deserve our compassion? I think it's great that she hires the homeless but why just moms? Its like an EMT arriving to the scene of a mass shooting in which the overwhelming majority of victims are males only to step over them to get to a few women in the distance.

  • @DelicateHazard

    They only hire mom’s? My grandpa sews better than me. It’s a great project but make sure to hire equally.
