This is a great idea! Sustainable and has excellent results! However, for anyone who wants to try this and lives in a place with a lot of snow/sleet/rain, just make sure that the outer fabric ISN'T cotton. (Source: Me, a Canadian)
@@Wredniara yeah I was definitely thinking that her lower back is going to be so cold with the cropped look 😅 it is cute tho so if you live somewhere with only moderate weather it's fine I guess
Very late to this sewing video but I must say you are the first one to sew a puffer jacket with a real down blanket instead of using polyester batting from JoAnns (yuck) I think you gave me the courage to do this myself. slightly different approach, will purchase a light weight down blanket maybe 2 king or queen. I will trace out the pattern pieces on the down blanket and zigzag the pattern pieces and then cut. Once I get them cut out without feathers/down going everywhere, then i will serge and finish the edges. I will use a waterproof nylon shell and quilt that to the blanket following the same stitch lines on the blanket making sure that they all line up. I will also use a think poly bating between the nylon shell and the blanket. I will also use a cupro lining for the jacket and put details inside pockets, elastic waist tunnel for tighening etc. and I hope I can draft a hood to go with the coat as well I will study what you did for that. Thank-you so much for this video and the inspiration to follow my dream of making a real down coat and not some poly bating piece of crap.
I swear you read my mind. There have been so many times I was going to start a new sewing project and you post your tutorial on the same piece of clothing a day later. Anyways this came out SO well!
@@user00616 i think they mean instead of cutting around the pattern pieces, trace the pattern pieces onto the blanket and then sew along the pattern lines. This way you can sew the pattern pieces closed before cutting the blanket open and letting all of the feathers out !! :-)
This would look cool with a contrasting color bias tape like black and make it a feature. Have the taped seams on the outside. My new hack is use socks as knitted cuffs on jackets. There are so many cool socks being made now and if you just cut off the foot section, the tube section (folded over) can become jacket cuffs.
The jacket turned out absolutely beautiful! I love this April! You inspired me into sewing and made my own channel crafty nifty, a sewing channel! I am only 12, and thank you so much for inspiring me April!
I thought the same @Cora Nicole! This is a summer jacket to me! Weather only goes down to 20F but it's very humid and windy where I'm from so I would prefer the Canadian 0F
Last year I made a huge coat out of a sleeping bag like with wendy and it is so much easier to handle when it's filled with Cotton Fleece/ batting than feathers. Also I only sewed the outside layer right sides together and did the entire inside/lining by hand with a mattress stitch so no seams were visible. It kinda still looks like Im wearing a sleeping bag though lol but sooo warm!
LOL! I had a similar experience with the feather mess. I teach drama and was making the regal cape for the lion in The Wizarsd of Oz. I loved the moment where they pull up what you think is a patch of garden and it's a floral cape. I actually bought a green fleece blanket for the grassy effect and as I cut it, I was creating tons of fuzzies and soon the entire bedspread where I was cutting was green! I had to go over the whole thing with packing tape, like a lint brush
its ok beautiful. its summer here in Australia but I am attempting this now for sure! and the colour is just wow. you could literally wear that colour with so many other outfits for sure. its a neutral tone and just so pastelly wonderful. thanks for sharing this tutorial. also I love how you added elastic instead of ribbed jersey to get the jacket to gather unlike most bomber jackets. very good idea indeed.
You make it look so easy! I bet you have tons of fun reusing things! I like thrifting, so many things out here! Lol you are so inspiring, I need to try more things with my machine, maybe one day I'll be half as good as you!😂😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂
This looks so cozy. In terms of the feathers, I think I would have pinned the pattern pieces down, cut around them in big chunks, then maybe basted them shut to contain the feathers, then gone ahead and cut out the pattern pieces. A lot more work perhaps, but possibly less messy. 🪶
Of course you have the most perfect Xmas tree! Cute jacket. I could see doing the same thing using a patchwork quilt or throw so it doesn't have the feathers. Great job!
Nice job April, I see that you are starting to use some more "industrial" techniques in the garment construction, like sewing side seams and sleeve seams in one step, rather than making the sleeve and then trying to fit it into the armhole, it does make for a slightly quicker construction time... If you want to extend the hood, you could add a faux fur trim to the front edge of the hood...also, if you want to make the pockets do double duty, you could stitch around all 3 sides of the bags, leaving the top open to form internal pockets...it makes for a more secure place to carry your cards, phone or keys... :))
I love your Christmas tree!! What a cool idea! You are so good at explaining why and how you do things. It really makes it easy for a beginner like me to follow 😋
This is really cool! Not much of a diy for us people without a serger... but it's still really awesome to see what you can accomplish, April! Thanks for sharing :)

And it should be longer 🙈 unless you like to have your kidneys stone cold.
See withwendy’s vid on making a jacket from a sleeping bag !!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Agreed! Great thought! Great execution! ...sadly not really practical 😢
Especially around the coast where it RAINS! I live in metro Vancouver, so waterproof is a MUST!
I literally want to do every single one of your projects because you make it look SO EASY but the projects looks like they are worth $$$$$
I'm shocked at how stylish it looks!! The trim added a lot to it :)
It’s so tidy and finished!
I'm so proud of your growth April, it's been an honor to watch you after all these years!!! 👏🏽💜
I love the color, a Carolina blue! It’s a Tar Heel jacket 😄💕

I know I'm quite off topic but do anyone know a good website to watch newly released tv shows online ?
Gurllllll you knocked it out the ballpark with this one 👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👌
Next time, trace the outline, see a running stitch on it, then cut and join the individual pieces
Amazing tip!

I forgot you live in Cali i was like that will NOT keep you warm haha. Love from midwestern 30 degree weather 🥶
My thoughts as a New Englander as well.. Its a nice 20°F here at the moment.
yeah, here in Ottawa (Canada) it was 0°F the other day. The usual for this time of year is 20°F.

That is super cute. I bet the hardest part was cleaning up all those feathers.
This was amazing!! You could save all the feathers and make a pillow!!
It's always fun watching you❤❤
Wow turned out so nice!
Soooo 😍 CUTE!!!!!!!!!
Excellent idea!!! Turned out great!
Amazing! Thanks for supporting @loveyourmelon!
For future feather related projects, could you sew along your pattern pieces, and then 1/4-1/2” away, and cut between the two lines?
April. You are a sewing transformation goddess.
So creativee 💕💕💕💕
NICE!! I have seen recycled blankets before - this is the best!!
Just finishing a jacket out of an old sleeping bag. You inspired me 🌻
This is the cutest shape and color!
So cool!
Wow! It turned out fantastic!
Amazing
I have just one word : GOOOORGEOUUUUUUS !!!
That is so cute! This video inspires me to go to goodwill and get a blanket and make some jackets for the homeless people for the winter 🤔😇
Im shook how well the seams turned out, I expected them to be really bulky and wobbly
The finished jacket is adorable!!!
reminds me of WithWendy's sleeping bag into jacket video
Do you have the link for that one please?

Love this project! Excellent job April. You ought to be proud girl 👍👏
I could see a lovely fancy edging on the good. Fake fur or something fun.
Thank you for sharing your creations!
I don't sew. I watch your videos. You are amazing
If I wore a puffer jacket that...puffy, I'd look like the Stay-Puft marshmallow man. But on petite April, it's perfect!
Very impressive with great results.
April! I miss binging your videos. I haven't sewn in forever😭
You’re really good April! 👍🏻
if you ever redo this I recommend hand-stitching the patterns on after you draw them on so that you have less feathers flying everywhere :)
I love turning blankets into jackets and coats. Thank you. Happy holidays

take care as it won't be waterproof if it's made of cotton.
Omg I freaking LOVE THIS!!! Ugh I’ve been trying to stay away from the thrift store and now you’re going to make me go back 🤣🤣🤣
You did an awesome job! You would never know that was once a blanket! 🎄💟
