Well, I don't think they need one anymore
I'd bet they have used this exact method.

right!? If you run out of creative ideas just go buy another effects pedal!

MAJOR French House vibes! Masterful technique, talkboxes and synth pedals are finnicky enough on their own, but the precision to combine them is virtuosity
This guy is incredibly creative and tasteful. And skilled. As someone who doesn't really have a favourite bass player, I'll go ahead and make it this guy.
never in my life have i thought a video could make me feel every single emotion at once within 10 seconds.
Another reminder of Charles's ability to write a piece that fits this crazy talk box nice work Charles sounded killer
1:24 was not long enough for this level of awesome.
It needs to be an entire album longer.
Love the digital sound, definitely feel the daft punk vibe, but can hear your unique playing voice come through. Your seem like you are on a roll of breaking new ground. I am so inspired by your videos.
I almost bought one back in the 70's they were called a voice box , but i didn't end up buying it , A few artists were using them back then , they were a Niche item , but you did well and it was rather a unique sound . I also wanted to record vocals going through a Super overdrive pedal , or a chorus pedal . There wasn't many options back then for a poor boy . 😂
That was incredible! Kinda gave it that "synth-bass" sound, but in a very pleasing to the ears fashion. You are, indeed, the most talented innovator of bad-ass bass to hit UA-cam, period!
@RealCharlesBerthoud... Okay, Charles this is Andy @stratsinger54 messaging you back, so hit me 😎👍with the good news, when you get a chance! I'll be right here waiting, sooo- any time, now!
@RealCharlesBerthoud... Sooo- What's the deal? Apparently the message in reference to some sort of prize that I'd won was completely bogus... l thought so...🤔🤨🙄
There's a saying something along the lines of "I thought I'd hit rock bottom, until I heard someone knocking below." This is the opposite. Just when I think you've pushed the instrument as far as it can go, you do this. Your skills both as a player and composer seem to improve WEEKLY! I may have made this request before, but I'd love to see your version of Sultans of Swing. I've only heard the song covered once (in Kathmandu!) because Mark Knopfler's soul is in every note. Each bend is done *just so*. My second choice would be to hear Hendrix's Voodoo Chile played on bass.
I love CHarles.
ONLY PROBLEM: you can tell his music background is VERY MAINSTREAM......meaning he's a better musician than Composer.....
we gotta get Charles to listen to avant classical and debussy and noise rock and a WIDER variety of musics and flavors, so his music isn't so Conventional.
NOTE: I'm not talking about all these cool weird videos he makes.
When Charles writes an extended piece, it's harmonically mainstream etc, due to his influences all being not too avant.
@@jonbongjovi1869 As a gore soaked chunk and grind fan
I have to agree : P
Heard of botted science?
@@jonbongjovi1869 Old comment, I know, but I have to disagree. His style ranges from bluesy jazz to melodic metal, and everything in between imo. His most recent album, Fable, is vety unique to his sound, which I at least don't connect to anything but his style. The way The Last Ride takes you through multiple stages, and a storyline is reminiscent of both classical music and psychadelic rock.
I know this is all personal opinion, but I honestly believe he's a better composer than he is as a musician, and we all know he's a virtuoso.
Just a different take
@@karililjendal watch Yngwie Malmsteen in 1985.
that's virtuosity.
Charles is too polite and perfunctory to be called a virtuoso.
@@jonbongjovi1869 Being polite and perfunctory has nothing to do with being a virtuoso. Both Eric Johnson and Jimi Hendrix are virtuoso guitarists, yet they have a very different stage performance.
I don't mind if you prefer Yngwie's style over Charles'. But Charles is undountably an extremely talented bassist, which is the definition of a virtuoso musician
This is one of the most impressive things you've done yet! But you're not just showing off - everything you played services the music. Your originals are my favorite vids you make.
I dont think this comes close to most of the other things he played in terms of required skill
@@ceg2161 As much as I love when people disregard what I'm actually saying to make a pedantic point, in my opinion, this is one of the most impressive things I've seen because of the way he took a novel tool and made it musical, while flowing into to the "skill" parts in a way that integrates it. When a musician reaches this level, it's not about pure shredding. Sure, he wants the views, but to make something that actually has musical value while having those skillful licks, utilizing many techniques - that's impressive. Plus, what do you know about trying to use a talkbox while playing an instrument? You may, but if you don't, your comment is just you being a pedant for no reason.
@@disfibulator did you just accuse that person of being a pedo? smh my head
Charles, Charles Charles Charles, these techniques don’t sound incredible… YOU sound incredible!! Keep up that rigorous training schedule KING!!!
You are playing the crap out of that bass. Talkbox makes it that much more unusual. Kudos!
I think Peter Frampton would be smiling if he heard this. You are an amazing bass player and what you just did was over the top, Great job .
Dude, I'm just getting back into playing bass and you keep giving more cool ideas to try. Thank you.
This is actually a really good exercise for a lot of amateur soloists. The problem with a lot of newer instrumentalists solos is a lack of physical engagement with the notes that they’re playing, forcing them to essentially sing along could lead to more effective progress.
not just solos, singing that's for everything, knowledge is never a bad thing.
Not even really sure how this one exactly works but it sounds good as always!
Working backwards, what we hear is from the microphone listening to the sound coming from Charles' mouth.
Charles' mouth is shaping the sound in the way we shape sounds when we speak or sing.
Rather than coming from his vocal cords, the sound is coming from his bass (plus whatever effects he has applied).
It's sent into his mouth along the clear tube from the talkbox, which is basically a little speaker in a box on the floor that vibrates the air in the tube.
@@HandbrakeBiscuit Yeah that's a pretty perfect explanation!
@@CharlesBerthoud Thankyou! Thought I'd explain it to save you having to do so. (Plus I feel a patriotic need to help a fellow Brit).
Just a random thought, yet both you and the rather wonderful Sophie Lloyd have talk boxes - any kind of collaboration would be welcome but the thought of some kind of talk box 'argument' amuses me...
@@HandbrakeBiscuit What a brilliant explanation, thank you. Once I read your comment and then re-watched the video, I saw the tube, realised it was leading into Charles' mouth and suddenly, it all made perfect sense.
@@nalakprince6376 Thankyou for your kind words! Glad I could de-mystify it for you.
The three knobs on the talkbox are a Volume control, a Tone control and a Gain setting, so there's clearly a little amplifier inside. I left that detail out of the original explanation because it's peripheral, really.
I love this song. I've always been a fan of talk box but this is even better. I rock out to it in my car. Wish it went on forever.
What a sweet timbre, its exactly what the bass needs to make it into a palatable solo instrument.
I love the sound you get from that setup. Reminds me of Living On A Prayer, but on bass instead and with lots more shred.
bro you can make anything sound weirdly amazing. No matter what instrument, the moment you touch it it sounds amazing
Finally, I’ve always wanted to see someone play bass with a talk box, thank you for doing it Charles and for absolutely killing it on the bass, love your work
Keep coming back to this vid. Love the sound.
Old tech dating back to the late 1930's. Had a friend who had the Kustom Electonics "The Bag" that he used when he play a gig at VCU in 1972. About 4 years later, Peter Frampton used it extensively, most notably on "Do You Feel Like We Do" on his Frampton Comes Alive double LP.
Good thing this was kept under 90 seconds. The concentration of funk in this was so high that I think a bigger dose would be quite dangerous for mere mortals.
Look into a album "Cobra Juicy" by "Blackmoth Super Rainbow". It's a vocoder, but he uses a bass for the majority of the carrier signal.
will do!
@@CharlesBerthoud Also has a tendency to use fuzz pedals for basslines. It's an acquired taste, but it's one of the more unique sounding things I've ever come across.
Lol
Black Moth Super Rainbow is awesome and the singer's other stuff under the name Tobacco is great as well. That vocoder/bass combination is used to amazing effect.
This is so cool, just proof of how any instrument can be played to so sound so different yet so vibey 🤘

Back when I was young (lol) I had a headless bass with a flanger, distortion and wah pedal. Guitar playing friends hated me as I could do everything they could but BETTER. Should have thought of a talk box back then and blow them out of the water completely. This sounds awesome.
I wonder how silly the "Weaoweaeowowow" sounded like without the talkbox
Well you don’t actually make any vocal noise with a talk box. You make the shape with your mouth. You’re probably confusing a talk box with a vocoder…
@@alexspear2145 This ^, you can actually mimic the effect a little by just putting your phone's speaker in your mouth and making movements with your mouth, it looks a little weird but you'll notice the effect.
the noise coming out of the tube replaces your vocal chords and you shape the sound as normal ... not like the vocoder thing that processes a signal from your mic ( now that IS embarrassing to practice at low volume )
so no sound without the tube unless you REALLY want to ;)

Hot take: The instrument doesn't matter as much as the skill of the musician with it to make a talkbox sound great.
I think that was proven several decades ago by Pete Drake on steel guitar with songs like Forever. Granted he didn't play particularly hard, but he wasn't that kind of musician, his talent was in the melodies.
Not sure how that’s a hot take.

you don't actually make any sounds with a talk box. it pumps sounds through the hose and you filter it by making shapes with your mouth, but you would actually stay silent.
If you really want to hear this bit of kit played as it was designed
Listen to the 1974 album of Peter Frampton “Frampton Comes Alive” and the track “Do You Feel” it’s around 20 minutes long and it’s! Well you decide oh! This bit of kit has been around since 1930 onwards and was used by the Jazz Guitarist Alvino Rey his sisters sat behind the stage curtains and mouthed the words to create the effect
