  • A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's day morning July 30th 1871.
From time to time, in our own fellowship, we call upon the congregation to each pray for their own salvation. It can sound selfish, but is a command: "make your calling and election sure".
Had Spurgeon lived in our day, he perhaps would have used the analogy of air travel. Oxygen masks fall from above us when the cabin depressurizes. We are told: "Fit our own mask, before helping someone else" Only when each of us is truly saved can we be of lasting spiritual benefit to others..

My heart condemned me for so long after i confessed, repented, and turn from my sinful life. I for so long thought i was not worthy in my eyes for God to forgive me. I prayed for assurance and joy in my heart that i am a child of God. I praise the Lord and leap for joy that i know that i know my name is written in the LAMBS BOOK OF LIFE. Finally .

Praise God for Him delivering you! I feel exactly where you were. I too struggle with assurance and it currently has been such a struggle to know whether I’m truely His. Salvation is on my mind constantly for months. Trying to find true rest in Christ alone. There is nothing more important in life than to be a true child of God. Covet your prayers.

We must "STRIVE to enter in" (to his rest) The Lord has motivated your (and other soul's) to do that. It can be painful, but leads to the inner life of peace and healing and deep joy. The kingdom of God is within you as Christ says.

Spurgeon: "Presumption is not assurance, though alas; many think so..." WOW! Sobering words, my friends. And convicted me right to the core. I love these sermons, and even more so - the God who allows me to hear His truth spoken through His earthly servants. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Brother, take heart! This promise was said to you “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” (John 6:37).
Your desire to agree and tell God that you’re a sinner (confession) is a sure sign of God bringing you to the Son. For behind confession there’s a seeking for cleansing, and we know that cleansing is only found through the finished work of Christ. Continue to commune with God through the means of grace and your heart will grow hot for Him and you will see the work that He has begun in you, and that will spring forth joy (assurance) inside out.

Who by a word make a man out to be an offender, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gates, and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right. Straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel.
What he says in this sermon is true and has stood the test of time. Saved and new birth, born anew, etc. are the same thing. In the same chapter Jesus speaks of the new birth (John 3:3 and 7) it also speaks of being saved ( see :16-21). I'll gladly listen to just one of Charles Spurgeon's sermons over binge watching sooo many of today's shallow, deceiving preachers.

After Jesus used the phrase "born anew" twice in John 3, only Peter uses it later, and that only twice (1 Peter 1:3 and :23).

Soli Deo Gloria. *But… Are you sure you are giving glory to Him?* When you distort the character of God by making Him look more like Shiva (the Hindu god of destruction), than the God of incredible love, patience and mercy from the Bible; The One who commands you to love your enemies and forgive them always!… Are you giving glory to Him? Because... friends, let's be honest. A “god” who creates billions of souls to be sent directly to hell, without any option to be saved… is an extremely cruel god. He is not the God of the Bible.
When you tell a sinner that Jesus has only died for a tiny portion of humanity, and that it is very, very unlikely that he will be among them; even though there are *several* texts in the Bible that claim that God sent His Son in ransom for humanity, because He doesn't want anyone to be lost... Are you giving glory to God? Sure?
Could it not be... That in the most hidden place of your heart you are giving glory to yourself?
One can easily feel “special” when he hears that he has been chosen by God.
I’ll take it for granted that you don't think God chose by lot who will go to hell and who not. I hope not!
The idea is absolutely ridiculous, and this god would also be very ridiculous.
And a “god” who sends better people than you to hell… would be even a sicker one.
The only coherent option has to be the one that makes you (the calvinist) better than the others. And here we finally get to the heart of the matter.
But there is a big problem, that “god” who chooses for something he finds in the person, is not the God of the Bible. He is no respecter of persons (Romans 2:11). That is, He does not favor or lean toward some people more than others for any particular reason or affection.
That is, for Him, you and all those who are going to end up in hell are exactly the same. Rebels. Sinners. You are not better than anyone.
Get this true deep in your head. And repeat it to yourself, over and over again, until you really understand it. Because this is a serious matter.
But the Bible says that we have been chosen. Based on what? How can God choose without violating His character and not based on anything in the man?
It's easy. He opened the door of Eternal Life to *ALL of his creatures.* And he says *to ALL of us:* Do you want to enter with me? Those who freely answer: “Yes” to that call, those whose answer He already knew before the foundation of the world, are His chosen ones. (Romans 8:29).
And certainly this speaks to us of a God of immense love. Love far superior to the human one, who easily makes preferences.
Let's be very careful, lest, pretending to give glory to God, we may be found liars. For the heart is wicked and deceitful above all things.
    (Jeremiah 17:9)

    • @vcbrittney4072
      @vcbrittney4072 Місяць тому +2

Exactly! How can we be judged by a just God without the freedom to chose who we will serve. True love cannot be demonstrated without the freedom of choice. God knows the end from the beginning. From the foundation of the earth He saw the entirety of time and already knew who would and who would not love Him before mankind was even created.

I'm so sorry for All who put their trust in C.H. Spurgeon because he quotes verses of the truth written in the scriptures! Everyone that is born in the flesh in this world have the knowledge of the tree of knowledge of good and evil in this world. So, also wolves in sheep's clothing knows more than most of us and able to preach the scriptures better than most of us!!! They are the ones also that are called fallen into apostasy believers that were also called by the hearing of the Word, but certainly not chosen to be saved. You should know the verse in the scriptures that says; Many are Called, but Few are Chossen!!! Just like the Church for centuries who calls themselves Christians and believes in vain they are saved, but are not. Because the word disciples and later calling themselves Christians in the scriptures simply means students and learners of the Word. Certainly not having been saved, converted redeemed and born again from above in Christ's spiritual Church. But of course this fallen into apostasy believer churches have been calling themselves Christians for centuries until today, because these wolves in sheep's clothing pastors and preachers have been doing a fine job in deceiving so many sheeps over centuries!!! Fallen into apostasy believer members goes from one generation to the next like clock work! Just like joining a club without even really thinking anything of it. Like politics!!!
