I have no doubt in my mind that at this point he understands English perfectly fine. Right after the game ended, he was asked on broadcast, something along the lines of "what does it mean to be able to play for the World Series?" - Just look at the way he was nodding with pure energy - he was SO ready to answer that question in English because of just how much it means to him to live in another step of him claiming his destiny.
In Japanese answer as well, he selects words very carefully and sometimes sounds avoiding the direct answer. And that’s why he needs an interpreter. Because nuanced expressions are really difficult and varied among nationalities and their cultures. Hope you notice that what the interpreter said is not exactly what Shohei expressed verbally in words. 😊

Ohtani never mentioned Soto's name, he said "Aaron Judge is a special player but they have a lot of other great players too, and we have to look at them as a team as a whole as we prepare for them, and we have to prepare together ourselves as a team." In case you're wondering how I know, I have lived in Japan for several years and speak Japanese every day. Either way, whatever. I guess perfect translation isn't everything haha.
Yeah, it seems like his interpreter isn't trying to translate Ohtani's words very accurately. I don't know if it's due to a lack of Japanese proficiency or an attempt to simplify things as an interpreter, but it feels like there's a lot of paraphrasing.

Having lived in Japan for 15 years, I know Japanese avoid eye contact esp with strangers but someone on his team needs to coach him on eye to eye contact communication ;) Congrats to Dodgers!
I don't have a particularly big problem with it, he's just displaying his humility or you could even say shyness. But I don't think he's being disrespectful in anyway, and he still does acknowledge who he is talking to even if for only a short moment of eye to eye contact.
I'm Japanese, and we don't have the culture of avoiding eye contact like you say, and it's normal to make eye contact with the person you're talking to. It really depends on the personality of the individual. Even in Japan, it's good manners to make eye contact with the person you're talking to.
The reason why Ohtani doesn't make eye contact with the person he's talking to is because he's talking through an interpreter, or because he's nervous because the people he's talking to are the star players he watched as a child. I think he makes eye contact when he talks to his teammates.

Yeah, it seems like his interpreter isn't trying to translate Ohtani's words very accurately. I don't know if it's due to a lack of Japanese proficiency or an attempt to simplify things as an interpreter, but it feels like there's a lot of paraphrasing.
@@kk-hj6pu I think because it's a bit challenging for him to find the correct wording to illustrate what he's trying to communicate. I know from experience it's not easy translating between English and Japanese, though I would have thought at least from the side of translating from Japanese to English he would not have omitted as much information, given how much more flexible the English language is compared to the Japanese language.
my mom is Japanese and she says the same thing, he doesn't translate correctly what Otani says

Having lived in Japan for 15 years, I know Japanese avoid eye contact esp with strangers but someone on his team needs to coach him on eye to eye contact communication ;) Congrats to Dodgers!
I don't have a particularly big problem with it, he's just displaying his humility or you could even say shyness.
But I don't think he's being disrespectful in anyway, and he still does acknowledge who he is talking to even if for only a short moment of eye to eye contact.
@Jus1408, no one needs to teach him anything. He a Freddy Freeman are the two most genuine and respectful players in the league.
I'm Japanese, and we don't have the culture of avoiding eye contact like you say, and it's normal to make eye contact with the person you're talking to. It really depends on the personality of the individual. Even in Japan, it's good manners to make eye contact with the person you're talking to.
The reason why Ohtani doesn't make eye contact with the person he's talking to is because he's talking through an interpreter, or because he's nervous because the people he's talking to are the star players he watched as a child. I think he makes eye contact when he talks to his teammates.
