Yes. The way you would do this is with an assign. So you would do stop track 1 as an assign with the midi CC number (for example CC80) and then stop drums would be a second assign with the same CC number. 👍🏻
thank you for your excellent videos. After watching several videos I decided to buy the boss rc 500. I also bought the widi jack to connect my Airturn BT500S-4 . In short yes. The RC-500 allows you to tap tempo either from changing one of the buttons or an external control, or midi, via adding it as an assign. The time stretch does its best but people have reported a warbling sound if you time stretch to a slower beat and it’s significantly slower. Hope that helps.
Hi John. Love your videos. I have bought the FS-1-WL and managed to get it working with a Wi-Fi jack. Do I have to do the assign settings for every patch or is there a global option.
Nice one! You have to do it with every patch.. but there is another way! Have a look at this and flip your thinking about every patch you have: ua-cam.com/video/KCeLDqMmMXk/v-deo.htmlsi=I13H07_WpjlZ1nXv
If you have neither, then go with the 600 as you have more tracks, more buttons, more options. HOWEVER.. my only curveball with that is if you are never going to need more than 2 tracks then get the 500. I like to split up my loops and have more control.. hence the 600/505mkii
Very informative and concise video, Just bought a Boss BR 500 on the back of your videos. My goal is to a ONE click midi system , change patches on my Korg Keyboard/ Guitar Pedals / and now the BR 500. Very help full video , just a thought is possible to LOCK tracks or loops on Boss BR 500 ? Thanks
Intake it you mean RC instead of BR? When you mean lock tracks/loops, you can save them to the 99 memories and then recall them instantly. So you could have each memory as a song with the loops saved within. 👍🏻 Yeah the RC-500 also has TRS midi so you should be able to do memory up and down to change the memories via midi. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thanks for your reply , sorry I meant when you save to Boss RC 500 memory location .Can you lock that loop so it can't be accidentally recorded over? thanks John
As in a rhythm pattern? Yes. You could, you could make a cheeky little change from one memory to another in time and have a different rhythm on a different memory. You can also change the parts in one rhythm.
Hey John, great video. Do know if there is a way to use the tap tempo feature via pedal rather than a knob so I can change the tempo of the loop live? Is this something I can only do on the RC600 or is it also doable on the RC500? Thanks for the advice. I am trying to figure out which looper to buy and tempo tap is an important feature. Also looking at midi controllers that would do the same thing if there is one you can recommend. Thanks
Hey you should have joined us for the last live stream. All about the 500. Yes you can change the buttons or add more and some of the options are tempo. 👍🏻 Have a watch: ua-cam.com/users/livenrLOS7bIBUE?si=Ftc2uBZet9Fmdwwg
Sort of… but only by using the undo / redo function. You would still have to think about where loops are in the chain. But you could have a loop with an overdub and then remove that overdub with a second button and repeat that process for the second track. 👍🏻
Hi Paul, great video & very clear, one question, which plug in Midi controller would you recommend? I'm a bit old school & like everything plugged in don't like using wireless
That’s fair enough. Pedalwise I would look at the Morningstar Pedals. They are the easiest to program and the most versatile. Have a look here: ua-cam.com/video/6Z5gdcNuHak/v-deo.htmlsi=mZUTPejQDJFrK86a

Hi John .. great video, again. I’m trying to connect this to the RC600 with midi cable but no joy! Have you tried this? Hoping I’ve just missed a setting change in one of the machines but any input would be valuable! Even tested continuity of the cable to be sure…
Hi John, you’ve mentioned that the rc500 can have more than 8 assigns. Could you explain how to do this? As far as I can tell, there are only 8 with no way to have more yet. (Non including ctrl 1 & 2)
Are you using an additional preamp for the mic or a mixer or something to boost the signal? Or is your mic’s signal strong enough to overcome the weak preamp of the RC500?
This is great i really would like to buy boss rc 500 pedal but i have question🙂.Can i record a loop and switch on drum beats after so it follow loop tempo?because on my boss rc 10 its impossible😑I dont want to setup tempo myself i want drum follow the loop 😀like drumer start after guitarist.I would like to just play press loop and after press drum button when i want drums.Have a great day🤝
@@JohnPaulMusicUK cool. Is that also possible with a 2 button pedal in the expression input? I just went busking with the rc 500 for the first time today. Amazing🤘🤘🤘
Having more than one track is so you can control different aspects of the loops.. different loops and different volume control. Think of it like a mixer. So I’m track one I could have a beatbox or rhythm and track 2 can be the chords. I can stop them independently to keep the looping dynamic. Or maybe track 1 is your chords and track 2 is vocal harmonies just for a chorus. So you can turn them on only in the chorus. Hope that makes sense. 👍🏻
Certainly. Wow you want to use the 500 & 600 together? Wondering why. Issues you will have is having one as a main and the other as a secondary for the clock and changing the settings for them to work with each other.
Ha ya I figured get even more tracks ha. Wanted click track of 500 going out so I can use the drums on the 600 in addition to the click track. Getting uses though will the internal clock sync. Seems to work better with 500 being the master…Thank you for the response.
Hi John, thanks for this video. I'm wondering if you have any knowledge about why certain targets cannot be assigned to the FS1-WL from the rc500? For example, I've noticed you cannot do a full track record/play/stop/clear on the FS1 like you can on the rc500, with record/play or play/stop only being available as separate options as an assigned target. I've also have noticed that track select is not an option for some reason. Am I missing something?
Hi John, I was wanting to also sync my Beatbuddy to this pedal but I think they probably use the same input, is there any way to have the beatbuddy and the FS1 both connected to “midi-in”? Great video, cheers!
@@JohnPaulMusicUK I’m not sure I understand, isn’t the Widi taking up the physical inputs? If it’s possible to have both the Beatbuddy and pedal extension connect to the RC500 that’d be awesome Thanks for the response
So the Widi would go into the RC-500 and the BeatBuddy would physically connect to the FS-1-WL. The signal goes through to the RC-500 but I’m not sure what the delay would be like for midi clock. Would have to test it.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Hi John, Im looking at the inputs on the FS-1-WL and wondering where I would connect the BeatBuddy? It looks like it only has midi out, not midi in, so im wondering how i would sync the beatbuddy to the RC500 through the FS-1-WL? Thanks again
I've been using the FS-1-WL for a month now with my RC-500. I find it to be unreliable at live gigs. It will randomly disconnect. And sometimes it will show that it's connected and the switches won't trigger the Midi commands, leaving me scrambling in the middle of a song to work around it, which is insanely annoying..
I’m about to buy one but not sure whether I need the 2.5 or 3.5 mm Jack option. My RC500 is still on the courier truck somewhere. [EDIT:] It took a bit but I finally found the information- it’s 3.5mm
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Would it be possible to utilize 2 FS-1's? The first two ways I thought of were not once I got down to it. It may not be possible to use 2 FS-1's, but you could technically use 2 FS-6/7's, one chained off the FS-1 and the other using Ctrl port. On the other hand, I also suppose it would be worth looking at the Morningstar 6 and 8 pedal midi at that point too. It all comes down to cost. You guys think that is possible and what are your thoughts?
I wonder if anyone here knows how we can adjust the volume of the rhythm section when this pedal is placed in your effects loop? Even with my volume down low on my amp, if I turn on the Rhythm section, it BLARES out of my speakers.
Click MEMORY then scroll across to RHYTHM. The first option is LEVEL. It’s set to 100 out of 200 and is certainly really loud imo. You can adjust it there and save that. Bear in mind that the rhythm volume is per memory and not system wide. You can assign an expression pedal to the rhythm volume to control it at your feet without bending down. 👍🏻

I’m agonising over which Loopstation to buy… just when you think a certain model will suit your needs you discover a limitation or something you know will annoy you… adding pedals has really opened up the functionality of this pedal but it’s more faff, makes me think that the 600 is the only real option.
Sounds like you have made your choice. Going with a flagship means that ceiling of limitations is much higher.. and you might not use EVERYTHING but it means that it does everything for you. Question is.. RC-600 with a midi controller for volumes and more. Or the RC-505mkii with a foot controller? Do you need volume control? My hot take is - step back from the tech. Get a piece of paper and a pen in a quiet space a write down everything you think you need.. (how you want to split up your loops/ effects/ style of looping/ inputs/ outputs.. integrate it into your setup. Hope all this helps. @@JohnPaulMusicUK yeah the 600 is over kill for my needs totally but I don’t do compromise very well… tbh the older 300 looks perfect.. multi part with faders.. only thing it lacks is the better sound quality but 2nd prices are still quite high so for a “little” extra you can buy the latest…. I will try and hold out for a cheap 300 but if not I think I will get the 600. Thanks for the heads up on the course.
Full of bugs. I am returning mine. Yes it has the latest firmware. Settings keep changing back to the factory default settings. I have had it for a week. I was not expecting this from Boss. Many others are having the same issues. Just one example....I set Track 1 to come out of "A" and after a while it changes to ALL "A&B".
Yes. For example, when I route rhythm to Out jack "A" and the guitar out to "B" It will not save the route. Another odd thing is I have it set up on my pedal board with a power strip to turn on everything with one switch. When I turn everything on the RC500 will not power up. I have to unplug then plug in the power cord then it turns on. Probably a bad batch. I returned it and have a RC-10 coming. I have a lot of Boss gear and have never had any issues at all.
I agree it’s pricy but for those who have already bought the RC-500 this is a great expansion, however if you haven’t got a looper yet, for the price, you are correct.
Yep. It is. But if you already have the rc500, it expands the functionality without getting a whole new looper. If you don’t have any, then yes I can see why this would be counterproductive. If you have that budget, get the 600. It’s got so much more to offer.
Complete midi novice using RC500. Understand all the assigning but how on earth did you program the foot switch? Far too quick and you seem to assume that everybody understands the language. Want to use with trs cable, not wi-fi. Boss manual is, as usual, no real help. ☹️
Not clever, everything is learnable and depends on what you wanna do. If you have a system that works and is easy for you, then that’s your system and certainly don’t have to change just cause a new shiny thing came out.. unless that shiny thing helps your already awesome system and then, yeah.. your gonna have to learn it. 🤣 Keep creating. 👍🏻

Great video John. Is it possible to assign two parameters to one switch? For example, stop track 1 AND stop drums with a press of just one switch?
Yes. The way you would do this is with an assign. So you would do stop track 1 as an assign with the midi CC number (for example CC80) and then stop drums would be a second assign with the same CC number. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Amazing thanks!
thank you for your excellent videos. After watching several videos I decided to buy the boss rc 500. I also bought the widi jack to connect my Airturn BT500S-4 . I thought that should work to connect to the looper via widi jack. So I would have 4 extra foot switches. Now I must find out it does not work or I am simple not able to set it up proberly. Could you please send me s short reply whether this setup could work? if I know it should work, I would try again. Otherwise I have to give up. Thanks from Germany, Juergen
more than welcome. I dont own an AirTurn BT500S-4 personally but I do know that they are shipped by default to by keystroke. you need to change it over to MIDI mode so you can send CC numbers over to the WIDI Jack.
Ive found the official video for you from Airturn where they acyully pair it up to a WIDI Jack.
Watch this first (only about 1m video): ua-cam.com/video/9eNWlC5S8DA/v-deo.htmlsi=cCQWO4QiJ845HOb2
Then once that is done, you need to set MIDI assigns on the RC-500 based upon what button is which midi command and what you want it to do.
Watch this next (its a bit fast as I was making a joke out of UA-cam shorts.. hope it helps): ua-cam.com/users/shortsg1-3-73Y82o?si=QxuqyAY_DqfMLOEK
@@JohnPaulMusicUK dear John, thanks to your help I was able to connect the RC 500 with the airturn via widi jack. But I have now spend hours and hours to configure the RC500 to listen to the Midi commands of the Airturn. I think I have setup everything correctly like channel, midi, etc. i have no idea why it does not work. Is there a way to send you a vjdeo and share with with you some more information? please let me know. thanks.
Great video! does the RC-500 allow tap tempo for playback via the external footswitches? If so will it timestretch properly. Thanks in advance!
In short yes.
The RC-500 allows you to tap tempo either from changing one of the buttons or an external control, or midi, via adding it as an assign.
The time stretch does its best but people have reported a warbling sound if you time stretch to a slower beat and it’s significantly slower.
Hope that helps.
I guess this works with the rc505 mk 2 aswell?
Certainly does. 👍🏻
Thank you great video
Very welcome
Hi John. Love your videos. I have bought the FS-1-WL and managed to get it working with a Wi-Fi jack. Do I have to do the assign settings for every patch or is there a global option.
Nice one! You have to do it with every patch.. but there is another way!
Have a look at this and flip your thinking about every patch you have:

Great and clear video ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Hi JP, thanks for the tip! Who would you recommend this to over buying the 600 for more or less the same money as the 500 plus switches? Cheers
Yeah the RC-500 also has TRS midi so you should be able to do memory up and down to change the memories via midi. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thanks for your reply , sorry I meant when you save to Boss RC 500
memory location .Can you lock that loop so it can't be accidentally recorded over?
thanks
John
That’s a great shout. You can only overdub and then as long as you don’t save that, it will revert back to the previous saved state.
Can you use a midi cable instead of the Bluetooth option?
Certainly can. The FS-1-WL has a TRS midi out and the RC-500 has TRS midi in/out ports. So just need an AUX TRS cable. 👍🏻
is it possible to change a patter in memory with the footbswitcher?
Have a watch: ua-cam.com/users/livenrLOS7bIBUE?si=Ftc2uBZet9Fmdwwg
Is it possible to make the RC 500 into a four-track looper with an external footswitch? I have a Boss FS 5U.
Sort of… but only by using the undo / redo function. You would still have to think about where loops are in the chain. But you could have a loop with an overdub and then remove that overdub with a second button and repeat that process for the second track. 👍🏻
"Handy!" :)
Very! ua-cam.com/video/C3wzXW-_gKk/v-deo.html
Have a look here: ua-cam.com/video/6Z5gdcNuHak/v-deo.htmlsi=mZUTPejQDJFrK86a
@@JohnPaulMusicUK wow! Yes I see wot you mean, a bit rich for my wallet I'm afraid, the Boss one in your video is much more economical even though I'm not into the blue tooth idea may still have to look into it, thanks for the advice thou, that Morningstar is spectacular have to say
You can plug in the FS-1-WL with a MIDI cable. You don't have to use Bluetooth.
Hi John .. great video, again.
I don’t think I mentioned more than 8.
It only has 8 assigns.
Are you using an additional preamp for the mic or a mixer or something to boost the signal? Or is your mic’s signal strong enough to overcome the weak preamp of the RC500?
This is great i really would like to buy boss rc 500 pedal but i have question🙂.Can i record a loop and switch on drum beats after so it follow loop tempo?because on my boss rc 10 its impossible😑I dont want to setup tempo myself i want drum follow the loop 😀like drumer start after guitarist.I would like to just play press loop and after press drum button when i want drums.Have a great day🤝
Yes you can! You would need to either reprogram one of the three buttons.. or have an external like in the video.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thank you so much🙂🙂😀😀😀😀
Very informative. Could I asign different effects on different buttons
Yes you can! Just need to use assigns. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK cool. Is that also possible with a 2 button pedal in the expression input? I just went busking with the rc 500 for the first time today. Amazing🤘🤘🤘
How can you fade out one loop and start another...thanks
Hi mate, question: what is the use for an extra track 2??? With only 1 track is enough or????
Having more than one track is so you can control different aspects of the loops.. different loops and different volume control. Think of it like a mixer. So I’m track one I could have a beatbox or rhythm and track 2 can be the chords. I can stop them independently to keep the looping dynamic. Or maybe track 1 is your chords and track 2 is vocal harmonies just for a chorus. So you can turn them on only in the chorus. Hope that makes sense. 👍🏻
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thank you so much JohnPaul!!! Very clear explanation bro, now I understand, have a nice day. Ur great! 🙏🙏🙋🏽♂️
I’m assuming this is just as valuable with the rc600? Also any tips of connecting rc500 and rc600 I’ve had issues…. Thank you! Great videos!
There is still physical connections so you could use them with the beat buddy and then use Bluetooth with the RC-500. Worth looking into.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK
I’m not sure I understand, isn’t the Widi taking up the physical inputs? If it’s possible to have both the Beatbuddy and pedal extension connect to the RC500 that’d be awesome
Thanks for the response
So the Widi would go into the RC-500 and the BeatBuddy would physically connect to the FS-1-WL. The signal goes through to the RC-500 but I’m not sure what the delay would be like for midi clock. Would have to test it.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK that’s a great idea! Hadn’t considered that, I’ll get researching, thanks again. Your channel has been a great help many times.
Does it work with VE-2?
It will connect via midi or wireless which I don’t believe the ve-2 has. I don’t believe it will work with the usb on the ve-2 unless I’m mistaken.
Would this work with the rc 5?
Yes. There are some limitations with the RC-5 but you can do this yes.. except the 2nd track part obviously.
I’m about to buy one but not sure whether I need the 2.5 or 3.5 mm Jack option.
My RC500 is still on the courier truck somewhere.
[EDIT:] It took a bit but I finally found the information- it’s 3.5mm
Yes. The new midi yes is 3.5mm which is good cause you can use aux cables. 👍🏻
Can you have 1 fs6 on the fs1 AND another in the CTL port of the rc500?
Does anyone know if this trick also works for the Boss RC-10R?
According to page 9 & 10 of the parameter guide, it looks like there are midi messages for controlling the play and stop.. so yes 👍🏻
If I am not using Bluetooth, what cable do I need?
Just a TRS cable. 👍🏻 the FS-1-WL has a midi out by TRS.
i have a Line6 Helix and i want to control ex.songs 1 to 80 with my RC-500 ,,when i choose ex. song 49,,on the looper it will choose song/preset for that song? is this possible?
Hi, Iv'e watched a number of your videos and I can't remember in which video I think I hear this information. In the video, This Pedal will change your life. there's a lot of information. Did I hear you say in one of your video's, that there is a book, which explains and covers all the information, you talk about in this video?
Hi Colin. Yes the book in question is the parameter guide. Have a look here: www.boss.info/global/support/by_product/rc-500/owners_manuals/02ee9ed9-fa87-43f5-b439-fa928187a3bb/

Exactly! This comment rings truer than a new bell!
Where's the rythym volume?
It’s in the rhythm menu (hold down the Rhythm On/Off button for quick access) however you could control it with an external expression pedal.
I’m making a new course called Master The Basics, which is looping for beginners - get 25% off whilst it’s in production atm with the code STARTERKIT - www.johnpaulmusic.co.uk/offers/AZBUfDvw/checkout
Just one example....I set Track 1 to come out of "A" and after a while it changes to ALL "A&B".
oh.. thats such a shame. mine certainly isnt doing that. is that global settings?
I have a lot of Boss gear and have never had any issues at all.

why dont you just buy a rc600 ? because in my country this setups price is the same
I agree it’s pricy but for those who have already bought the RC-500 this is a great expansion, however if you haven’t got a looper yet, for the price, you are correct.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thanks bro helped alot
some day someone will make a proper looper
That setup is more expensive then a rc600...
Yep.

Not clever, everything is learnable and depends on what you wanna do.
