Very helpful thank you. I had serious doubts that the yamaha was the right choice, after having already bought it, but this video convinced me I did ok. Thanks.
Oh wow, thank you for this! I've only watched it once and made sure to save it for further development. I will come back to re-watch and dissect later. This is so cool! I love the idea of hacking more out of something than was intended. I have a DTX Multi12 as well as Ableton Live Software, Ableton Push2, and some older Yamaha pads. I am building a hybrid kit with hand drums (congas, djembe, cajon, etc...) and these electronic components and now I can add a keyboard to the mix as well!
That's awesome! The DTX M12 works great with Ableton -- that's what all of the labels on my pads are for: top left: stop top middle: solos the Click top right: moves up one scene bottom left: play bottom middle: Launches current scene bottom right: moves down one scene I got most of that scheme from this video: ua-cam.com/video/7SfgKhKws4Y/v-deo.html
Wow !!!! I did not know it did this !!!!!! Thanks !!!!! That's great !!! Yeah, if there's anything else you think is cool, please make another video for the Yamaha DTX Multi 12. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great info. A lot is over my head. I am close to purchasing the DTX Multi 12. I have a Roland TDK-35 and I want to be able to plug the Roland kick, HH and maybe a cymbal into the DTX M12. Any idea if this will work, Roland plugged into Yamaha? Thanks!!
The kick pad should be 100% fine. The cymbal pads may have some differences in terms of 1-, 2-, or 3-zone playability, but should in general work. The hihat pedal will be the most problematic. Roland / Yamaha hi hat compatibility is not great. I'd say to give it a shot, but there's a chance it won't work at all (or it'll be strictly binary: open / close, with no in-between sounds).
I'm pretty sure it's a tone generator with 16-channels, multitimbral, and 'just' has the 64-voice general limit. Channel 10, as far as I know, is the one that can access the user-drumkits (samples) and the other 15 channels should at minimum be able to have unique general midi program-changes sent to them, thus enabling them to do stuff like playback full orchestra midis (I will be using it for castlevania-esque stuff as tests). I -think- only channel 10 lets you assign the user-defined sample kits, which kinda makes sense. Anyways, so it's a tone generator with some sample-storage and replay capabilities and the very nice physical peripherals and external input controllers as well. Really dig it. "It's a shame it can't just just stream from an SDCard like modern gear, limiting you to 2.5MB per-file and 26 seconds of maximum playback per voice" but whatever, it's pretty old. As a tip, if you don't care about sound quality, you can "just" pitch-up your sounds 4x's (double their speed twice), squishing the length of the sample by having it very high-pitched fast playback BEFORE you import the wavefile into the device, and then pitch it back down from the voice>tune menu at -24semitones it will playback at the original speed with some quality (higher frequencies) sacrificed. This allows me to upload a 2.5MB mono file (of Final Fantasy III's "Narshe" soundtrack music, around 1.5minutes) and playback a sound that normally is 26seconds at up to 104 seconds ~1 and a half minutes. Because the samples I intend to work with might come from oldschool systems, they weren't ever even 44.1khz so I would actually be more closely approximating the original sounds while also saving space by doing this little speed-up-before-import and then pitch-back-down-nearest-neighbor-downtuning technique. Totally works. Also, borrowing from the tracker scene and other minimal/oldschool scenes - I definitely make use of the loop region capabilities for sample lengths, and then assigning the same sound across multiple layers on the same pad with slight pitch detune, or two samples with slightly different loop-lengths (as in 2 samples difference) and let them phase out in their looping. Doing this with 2 sounds that are identical, but one has been inverted (the audio-processing concept of inverting a sample), can give not only interesting phaser effects / a sense of pulse-width modulation for basic synthesis waveforms, but also can approach a sense of filtering as well. While barely using any space. Cheers!
Great video! 2 questions: 1: Are you able to apply effects to the DTX’s Keyboard tones while controlling with MIDI? 2: Are you able to upload your own keyboard patches to the user kits somehow? Thanks in advance! Edit: Sorry I thought of one more! Are you able to layer Keyboard sounds like you can with drum sounds in the app?
Hi Andy -- somehow I missed this question when you posted it -- sorry about that! As far as I can tell (with very little experimenting, so this might be wrong), the effects generator is only routable through the "drum" engine, not the general MIDI tone generator. Also haven't found a way to layer or upload keyboard sounds. Sorry!
Andy Sutton - you can route the keyboard sounds through the FX. You have to adjust the CC’s for the FX send, reverb 91, chorus 93, variation 94. Do this on the channel that has the keyboard voice you’re using. You have to do this from the controller since these parameters are not accessible from the DTX front panel. You still need to set up the FX themselves on the DTX as well.
Hello guys, I recently bought this unit bc of it's capabilities over anything else currently out there and I am happy to report than yes you can route FX for each pattern by setting the MIDI on the PTN to "TRANSMIT ALL" instead of just "PC" (as indicated in this video). With transmit all you now have panning, volume, and FX send settings available per pattern, which makes these sounds really come to life. A big thanks to Drum Gear Geek for inspiring me to delve into this functionality of the DTX, I'm really enjoying this instrument!
Brandon, thanks again for this tutorial! Now that My keyboard is triggering sounds via PTN, I need a way to mute sounds like chimes and bells, and sustain sounds like vibes. I suspect it’s possible since pressing on a pad will mute sounds triggered from that pad. Can you explain how to do so with a footswitch? The manual (p88) indicates how to use a footswitch in UTIL4 PAD. I found I could add vibrato with my sustain pedal using midi control change CC01, but couldn’t find further guidance, and neither google nor trial and error have yeilded results.
Hi Curt - this is a great question, and unfortunately not one that I've been able to find a simple answer for. The MuteSw (editor: kit 7-2) is what lets you set up pads to use as muting elements, but that's a) only available for the 12-on board pads, and b) only available for the voices operating on the "kit"-aligned sound generator. That's how the "dead stick" Vibes are programmed in preset kit 43. You can use a sustain pedal running directly through the keyboard (unmodified -- just treat it as a regular sustain pedal and the DTX should register correctly), although it's doesn't help for sounds like chimes, where you actually want a "mute" pedal, not a sustain pedal. Additionally (frustratingly!) it doesn't even work for vibes, as the GM vibe sound assumes a resonant sound -- it's not like the piano sound, where it actually handles a note-on and note-off message, and the sustain pedal prevents the note off from being sent. So, unfortunately, you won't be able to get that kind of articulation control. One potential solution is using the MuteSw and having your melodic voices on the actual pads. You won't be able to get full keyboard octaves of them, but if it's only a few notes, you can program them onto the 12 pads and use the MuteSw to "touch mute" the notes. Hope that helps, sorry I wasn't able to find out anything more useful!
If you have any tips on how to use the app along with the Yamaha DTX Multi 12, that'd be cool too !!!!! I haven't hooked it up yet, but I'm having a hard time using the pad in general. It's not very user friendly. I play lefty, so I want to permanently move the hi hat to the left side of the pad and the snare to the right, and I don't see anyone that has shown that on UA-cam. I don't even know if it can be done... Basically I want to use it as a small drum set. I have a snare, but I didn't get a hi hat yet. I'm not sure if that'll work either. I have a kick and hi hat pedal so far. I definitely need help with this thing...lol Thanks !!! :-)
Great videos! I actually bought my dtx m12 after I saw your spd-sx 's m12 comparison video. Do you know how to connect the iPad to the m12? I've got the camera connection & USB cable but it never connects to the app. I ultimately want to lager sounds & play backing tracks through the app. Thanks in advance for any help you provide!
That's awesome! I'm so happy you found the previous video useful! I don't use the M12 Touch app regularly, but I have played around with it a bit. I'm going to try and do a video for it soon! I've always been able to just connect it using the camera kit -- I actually have the 30-pin camera kit + a 30-pin to lightning adapter, so I haven't tried the newer Lightning camera kit. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Great video! Thanks for this tutorial. I'm hoping to can shed some light on a problem I'm trying to solve. I have a DTX M12 and an Alesis Nitro drum set. Can I use the same midi settings you've demonstrated here to trigger the drum or percussion sounds on the DTX from the pads of the Alesis kit, as if the kit was a keyboard? Is it just a matter of selecting a preset kit and mapping the single Alesis pad midi notes to the corresponding DTX triggers?
It works! Once I got the midi settings on the Alesis right, the pads immediately mapped to the drum preset on the DTX. I had to change one or two of the Alesis pad midi notes to find the right sample but that was simple. Now the Alesis sounds the samples from the Yamaha DTX M 12! Awesome!
@@quietcitydesign Excellent! Great news! Thanks for closing the loop -- hopefully this will help someone else who visits this page. Much appreciated, and enjoy!
@@DrumGearGeek OK, it's almost there, but I'm stuck trying to set the Pattern midi. Now, I understand the MSB and LSB settings and I have my user kits set for the separate PTNs. The problem is that the Alesis pads trigger whatever sound I have selected on the DTX. I know it's got something to do with setting the Midi program change and midi channels. In your video, at around 11:08 you set the PTN Midi channel to 1. Is that because the keyboard you've connected sends on channel 1, or was that arbitrary? Thanks in advance! I'm going to records a detailed explainer video once I get this working!
I have a crazy question for you. First, some background: I use the DTX Multi 12 as part of my One Man Band act. I have 5 kick pedals connected to jacks 13-17 that I use to play various percussion sounds with my feet while I'm playing guitar/keys with my hands. OR the pedals sometimes generate block chords if I'm playing drums with my hands. Anyway, I need 2 more pedal inputs. I also use the HH and the Foot Swtich but they are limited and can be awkward for certain applications. The 2 methods that occurred to me: 1.) Jack 13 is a 3-zone input, but is designed for a single, multi-area drum or cymbal. A conventional Y insert cable doesn't work (and, even if it did, would only add 1 of the 2 extra inputs I need). Is there any way to run 3 mono inputs into Jack 13 to get the extra triggers I need? 2.) I have a Roland TM-2, and am trying to see if I can create extra trigger from the Roland unit to the Yamaha unit via MIDI. Is that even possible? I've been experimenting but can't seem to get them to communicate.
Nice! Sounds like you're doing some cool stuff with the Multi12! Splitting the Jack 13 will be tricky -- the Yamaha multi-zone pads use FSR ("rim switch") in addition to piezos to differentiate the different functions. I haven't had luck splitting any of those types of inputs into 3 discrete mono inputs. The TM-2, on the other hand, should definitely be something that's usable. You'll need to make sure that both devices are set to transmit on the same channel and that the Multi12 has MIDI receive enabled on that channel. Once that's working, it should just be a matter of figuring out what MIDI notes are being sent from the TM-2, then assigning the appropriate sounds to those notes on the Multi 12.
@@DrumGearGeek Thanks! If you're curious, I currently have one short demo on my channel posted a couple of years ago. Audio quality and A/V synchronization are inconsistent. It was also well before I bought the Multi 12, but it will give you an idea of what I do. If things go according to plan, I should have some higher quality demos ready in a couple of months. 1.) Regarding the "split" option: Even if I can't attach 3 independent triggers, I'm wondering if I can't get at least 2 via an e-drum splitter. Are you familiar with those? One company that makes them is a German company called Drum-Tec. At least one of their models supposedly has a built-in resistor. There's another company (Drum Splitters) that operates in the US, but I'm not sure how their products are much different than a standard insert, or if they work on anything other than piezos. They seem to market strictly for Roland gear. 2.) Regarding the MIDI option, I've done everything you described above. Both devices are set to MIDI channel 10, which is enabled to receive on the Multi 12. I've also found where the MIDI notes can be selected for the triggers on the TM-2. MSB 125, LSB 000, & Program set to 001 on the Multi 12. Problem is, I can't find any menu in the Multi 12 that will let me assign sounds to MIDI notes other than those assigned to existing pads or trigger inputs.
@@kumpenstein Nice! I'll check out the vids when I'm home tonight. I haven't used the purpose-built splitters, so I'm not sure how well they'd work. I'd be interested to see what you find out! For the MIDI, what I've done in the past (on a DTXtreme v1 brain, but not on the DTXMulti12) was to set up all four layers (i.e., assign a voice to each of the layers), but then turn off the actual usage of the layers. On the DTXtreme, at least, it kept the voice / note assignments, it just didn't use those notes on the pads anymore. That allowed me to "re-use" those assigned notes via external MIDI. I haven't tried it on the Multi12, but that's where I'd start experimenting. Hope that helps!
@@DrumGearGeek Just ordered a cable from drumsplitters.com. It was under $25 including shipping, so I decided to absorb the risk. If it works, you might want do do a review for your channel. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my video.
As a theatre pit player I thought the m12 was powerful enough as it was... This is exactly what I've been wishing I could find... for glockenspiel, xylophone and timpani settings.
Glad to hear! I think this functionality can really be a boon for pit players in particular -- I wish Yamaha did more to make this officially documented!
@@DrumGearGeek got it up and running last night... there a few issues I had to trouble shoot like making sure the pattern selection is under a user pattern and that midi functionality is set to midi not USB. Once I got past that it works fine... still trying to figure out the MSB LSB selections as I can only access the GM and MI sounds but not factory or user kits. Not sure whats happening there.
@@TheDrummersVadeMecum Yup -- that's expected. Only the onboard pads are able to access midi channel 10, which behaves differently. Anything that is "drumkit"-like (e.g., different sounds on each note, as opposed to different pitches on each note) can only be used on channel 10 (and therefore only on the DTXMulti12's own pads) -- you're only able to access melodic (GM / MI) sounds on the external keyboard.
I’m real thankful that I watched this video *after* viewing the comparison video with the SPD-SX. (Are the general MIDI sounds presumably called up from the Motif series like everything else in the Multi 12 engine?) Dig your humor after you call up the piano sound.
@@Shred_The_Weapon Might be too late but the motif series has separate gm voices which tend to be not as good as the preset voices, the multi 12 probably uses the same.
I came back to watch this video over again, not only to remind myself how to access the GM bank but also to investigate which electric grand piano sound it includes. I am stoked that it is the tone which originated when Roland came out in 1987 with the MKS-20 module and RD-1000 piano. That tone was in the original Motif line, and I included it on a solo cut which I produced in the home of a keyboardist that had a Motif 7 at the time. ua-cam.com/video/IlzzWt3_UmI/v-deo.html
Shawn Jordan hi Shawn - I’m on a gig right now and can’t test this, but my guess (emphasis on guess) is that if you send a MIDI volume controller message (CC #7) on the channel that you’re setting the melodic voices on, it SHOULD effect just that channel. If you can map one of the knobs on your MPK to that continuous controller, it might just work :)
HI, i'm am a DTX m12 user too. I notice that the User pattern i create are related to a specific KIT and specific pad while the Factory pattern already made play even if there is no sound in the kit. How can I make the same? Thank you for this video!!!
When you want to make a pattern you have to create a new kit. The user pattern that I created works only on this new kit and when I change the kit and try to listen the pattern i made it works with differents sounds. With the factory pattern it doesn' t happen and the sounds doesn't change.
Hi Francesco -- sorry, replied from my personal account before :) Are you sending a program change with your pattern? The factory patterns are all set to send a program change to make sure that the expected drumset is used when a pattern is playing. If you don't send the program change message with your pattern, the pattern will play back with just the current voice in the multipad. To set this up, check out page 77 in the owner's manual, under the "Bank Select page" section. You'll need to set up a program change on channel 10, using the MSB/LSB/PC settings as defined in the manual. Let me know if you have any questions! - BP
I tried but it doesn't work. I do this: 1) I create a new kit and choose a sound for pad 1 2) I go to user pattern that is empty. Go to PTN3-1 and I choose for channel 10 Transmit=PC 3) I select M=125 L=001 PC=001 (that is my user kit) 4) Start to record pattern 5) Listen the pattern that i made Everything is ok but if I choose my 001 User Kit the sound is right but while I play the pattern and I chenge the kit the sound change This doesn't happend when i choose a factory pattern in a empty kit. Thank for the help but it's a problem that I always had.
Another brilliant review! With this new toy, I might be able to consolidate (in terms of setup) yet expand (in terms of options) my rig more than I originally intended! Can I surmise that you also hard pan the outputs to separate the percussive sounds and the pitched sounds in the mix?
That's great news! To be honest, I haven't examined splitting up the sounds -- I've generally just sent the composite signal ("pitched" and "drums") as a mono or stereo feed. I'm not sure if there's a way to pan the sounds associated with the other MIDI channels. Let me check... (5 minutes later). Okay, looks like we can! :) In PTN 3-3, you can set a pan for each channel. If you set it to channel 1 (or wherever your "pattern" midi sounds are running), you can adjust the pan. Note: You'll need to set the same MIDI channel (e.g. 1) to transmit "all" on PTN 3-1. Hope that helps, and this might be something that I try myself in the future. Quick testing shows a (surprisingly) clean signal coming out -- I'm not getting ANY thing out of the right channel when I have the keyboards panned hard left. The drums had a little bit of bleed, but it might have been reverb tails that weren't adjusted. One downside -- there's no way to setup the entirety of the drumkit to be panned with one motion -- you'll have to go to each pad and adjust the pan in VOICE2-3. Hope this helps!
Is it possible to layers sounds coming from the external keyboard like you can on the pads and triggers? If so, can you also individually pan each layer?
No, you can only set up one sound per MIDI channel. If you could have your external keyboard send on multiple MIDI channels simultaneously, this should be possible, but that would be a keyboard setting, not on the DTX.
Just as I feared. My controller is a Roland PK-5A, which can only transmit one channel at a time. Guess I'll have to keep my current workstation. Oh, well. I'll still have more options than I do currently, just won't save as much space as I'd hoped. One final puzzle piece is supposed to arrive by mid-week, then I can begin the configuration. Thanks, again!
Began my attempted configuration, but it won't let me set up any stacks. The main voice assign screen (as described on page 56 of the manual) is supposed to include a letter (A, B, C, or D) in the upper right hand corner, representing the layer. That letter does not appear on mine. I can access the layers in the MIDI menu as described on pages 34 and 35, and even assign MIDI note values to layers B and above, but those layers still don't exist when I return to the VOICE page (step 7) and I still only hear the voice assigned to A. I made a call to Yamaha support, and they're SUPPOSED to get back to me, but I don't know when. I had already done a factory reset before I attempted any configuration. Any ideas?
Hello!! Great video! I'm gonna try it!Can you please tell me how to connect a Korg Volca Fm synth to the dtx Multi 12 and launch the sounds of the synth trough the dtx? Thank you so much!
Good question! That's actually something that most multipads are able to do. You'd connect a standard MIDI cable from the MIDI OUT of the DTX Multi 12 into the MIDI IN on the Volca FM. You should start getting sounds immediately from the Volca when you hit pads on the DTX Multi 12. Note that the sound will come out of the Volca output, not the DTXM12. You'll need to make sure that you're sending and receiving on the same MIDI channel. I'm not sure how to set that on the Volca, so you'll need to check the manual for it. It's generally safe to start with channel 1, though, that's the default for most synths (anything drum related generally defaults to 10, which is what the DTXMulti12 is set to broadcast on). To change that channel to 1, hit the "MIDI" button on the DTX Multi 12. This will drop you into the MIDI menu. Make sure MIDI1 is selected (It should say "Message Type = note". Then hit the "ENTER" button to dive into the MIDI1 menu (told you the DTX loves menus!). Use the arrow keys to select the MIDI1-3 menu. It should list "Midi Ch=10". Use the "+" and "-" buttons to change the value to Channel 1. Then, to control the pitches being played, use the arrow buttons to switch to MIDI1-2. You'll see the current note listed (ex: C#). Use the "+" and "-" buttons to select the note you'd like that pad to play. You'll need to do the last two steps (setting the MIDI channel and setting the MIDI note) for each pad . Helpful hint: you can stay in the menu and hit a pad to select a different pad to set -- the current active pad is displayed in "reverse" numbers (white number on a black background) immediately to the right of the menu name (e.g. "MIDI1-3"). Hope this helps!
Nice! The good news about having that kind of flexibility is that you can do SO much with it -- for example, you could have each pad sending a note to a different MIDI channel, and therefore triggering a totally different physical synth. However, the downside is that it it's much less plug-and-play than a simpler solution would be. Glad it worked out for you!
Could you show how to, and an example of playing timpani sounds on the keyboard, then quickly switching to xylophone, then glockenspiel or marimba... while using the pads to play hand percussion such as congas, tamborine, etc. Thank you!
sssschon hi! Those would just use the steps shown in this video to set up the sounds, then using either “KIT” and the +/- buttons (for drum sounds on the pads) or “PATTERN” and the +/- buttons (for melodic sounds on the keyboard) to select the sounds you’ve set up.
Do you have any idea how to do similar things via USB midi out? I’d like to control a midi programmable iPad app. This app works perfectly with a regular USB midi keyboard, but I couldn’t quite make my DTX control it... I had no idea about the midi channels and sub menus like you showed, but even so I’m still lost. I would GREATLY appreciate any info!
Hi Jules -- I can try and help! Can you explain exactly what you're trying to do? Are you trying to control the DTX Multi internal sounds from an iPad app, or to control the external iPad app from the DTX Multi 12?? If the latter, you should be able to do it from the DTX -- I do something similar with analog synths (you can see in this video: instagram.com/p/B7piga3hL_9/). The key there is making sure that the DTX is set to transmit on the correct MIDI channel. Also, how are you connecting to the iPad? You'd need to use something like the camera connection kit to connect the USB-A (rectangle end) to the iPad, with the USB-B (squarish end) to the DTX.
Drum Gear Geek the latter is what I’m attempting to do. There’s an app called Playback used for multitracks. If I had a plug and play midi keyboard(or footboard) with the adapter you mentioned, I’ve successfully sent it midi notes. The app allows me to simply select a function, and learn the midi note as the call to it. (Just like mainstage or other softwAre easily is assigned to different knobs, sliders, keys, etc). After applying some of what this video showed me, I’m at least getting messages to the app from the dtx. I just can’t set it up as accurately as I’d like to.
There’s an internal sequencer on the multi12 - you can use the pads to start / stop internal tracks. If the song is on an external sequencer/sampler, it depends on what methods are available to control the external piece. You can send MIDI notes or MIDI CC messages from the pads, so if those can control the external equipment, it should be possible. Do you have more specifics of what you’re trying to do? Thanks!
@@DrumGearGeek Thnks for the reply. I actually want to use the DTXM12 trigger General Midi songs (without drums) from a usb stick and play it on top of the dtx. is that possible for dtxm12 to do that (similar to what triggering GM from PSR Keyboards and play on top of the MIDI). Thnks.
@@orcadrum862 I don't _think_ that's possible, but I haven't experimented enough with it to know, to be honest. You definitely can't play directly off of a USB stick, but you can import a "Pattern" from the USB stick to internal memory, and then trigger the playback of that. I'm not sure how much the Yamaha Pattern standard matches GM, though. If you have a sample GM file available to download somewhere, I can try on my device and let you know the results. Thanks!
Hi - the pattern is always going to use whatever drum sounds (channel 10) are on the currently active kit. You can have the pattern load a specific kit as part of its loading process, but that will also change the sounds on the pads.
Can you give me some more information on what you're trying to do? Are you trying to change both from an external device? Or is one of the multipads controlling the changes? In general, you'll want to ensure that the two devices are on separate MIDI channels, and that you're sending the appropriate PC message (keeping in mind LSB / MSB values, as well as the PC value)
Hey Brandon, I'm having an issue with my Multi 12 and having seen this video earlier I thought you might be able to help me out. It seems that it receives midi data from every channel all the time, in the settings you can turn of receive on channel 10 but you can't do anything about the other channels. Do you know if it's possible to turn off receive for every other midi channel? I'm trying to sequence it with my Motif on channel 10 only but I'm getting random gm sounds where there shouldn't be and it's driving me crazy. Thanks in advance.
Yup! I had to deal with something similar to your problem recently. Unfortunately, there's no setting to outright block those messages as they're coming in -- you can disconnect the PADS from the tone generator per channel (via MIDI2-1, TG Switch), but not incoming MIDI. You can also disconnect from _sending_ messages via MIDI per channel (via MIDI2-2, MIDI Switch), but that doesn't do anything for incoming either. However, you CAN stop those messages from making any sound -- the easiest is via MIDI3-2, Volume. Set all problematic channels to a volume of 0 and you should be all set. Note that this is stored per kit, so you may need to set it in multiple places (although it's definitely worth it for the flexibility that per-kit values for these settings gives you). Hope that helps!
@@TheGrelots Yeah, that's the biggest problem with the Yamaha stuff. The DTXMulti12 (and the EAD10) are SO powerful, but their interface is SO BAD, and the manuals don't really help either.
Yup, definitely -- controlling the drum sounds of the DTXMulti12 with the DTXtreme is pretty straigtforward -- just connect the MIDI and make sure to assign sounds to the MIDI notes coming out of the Xtreme. The trick in this video is more for running both drums AND melodics at the same time.
Hey there, thanks so much for the DTX12 videos! I'm looking for a workaround to be able to quickly change the midi notes transmitted on each pad so I can use the DTX12 as a controller for a synthesizer. Basically, I want to select/strike a pad, then use an external MIDI controller to dial in which note(s) that pad is sending the synth. I'm pretty lost when it comes to MIDI programming, so I'm not sure what message I'd have to send to the DTX12 to tell it what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Rob - can you explain a bit more what you're trying to do? You can set which note + channel the DTX sends on (per pad) from directly on the DTX . Respectively, those are adjusted using screens 1-2 and 1-3 in the "MIDI" settings (see pages 62-63 in the manual)
@@DrumGearGeek Yeah, I'm really just looking for a quicker workflow. I've got the iOS app and everything, but even that feels like it takes too long to dial in notes in a writing or rehearsal setting. I'd like to just hit a pad, turn an external dial to change the pitch of the note and move on. Maybe I should just get used to the menus and submenus (and sub-submenus)! Either way, thanks for the quick reply!
Hi! Just wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten about this -- I don't want to give you inaccurate information, so I want to test this myself. Haven't had a chance to yet, but it's on my to-do list!
@@DrumGearGeek Here’s a question I sent to the DTX Yamaha clinician. Maybe you can ponder this as well? Hi Simon, So I did ask you about programming melodic patterns from an external keyboard. However, for ease of operation, I've been able to internally record an arpeggiated melodic sequence as a pattern. I'm now trying to take that pattern and assign it to a pad on the kit that you helped me program that has stacked chords on some of the pads, When assigning the recorded pattern to a new pad in the new kit, the pitches are now playing much lower than as they were recorded as a pattern. I also have a question about pattern tempo. It's quarter note equals 58 in the pattern, yet it plays much faster when assigned to the new kit. Does each kit have its own internal tempo? Thanks for the help. John
can you make a good suggestion for an amp to play the sounds from the dtx through (and how does that change if I also would like to play some 808's as well)?
In general, I'd recommend staying away from instrument amplifiers -- I've had a lot of luck with powered PA speakers, like the QSC K12.2 or K10.2. If you want the best sound, especially for something like an 808 kick, you'll also need a subwoofer. Note that if you're already playing through a big PA, you won't need ADDITIONAL speakers -- just play through the house PA. But if your PA is just a small one used for vocals, it probably won't cut. :/
Hi, I’m a dtx multy 12 user and I’m trying to connect it with a behringer “u control” but it doesn’t work. I followed all the steps in your video but no way. There are some basic modify that I have to do before? Please SOS. Tanks
@@gianvitodorio1099 The U-Control is an audio interface, so it wouldn't be useful for this type of set up. You need to send the MIDI signal from the keyboard, not the audio signal.
@@gianvitodorio1099 Ah, got it. The U Control name has now been re-used for a newer product, that's what I thought you had. For that keyboard, you should be able to connect as described above. I'm not sure what could be causing the problem -- some things to double-check: 1) make sure that it's getting power to the keyboard. With a big keyboard like that, it may not have enough power from the DTXMulti12 USB bus -- try using it with a standard external power supply. 2) Make sure that the keyboard is transmitting on the correct MIDI channel that the DTXMulti is expecting (e.g., if you set the DTXMulti to set up the sounds on channel 1, make sure to transmit from channel 1 on the keyboard. Good luck!
Yup, there are a few acoustic string sounds (violin / viola / cello / bass / trem ensemble / pizz. ensemble), and some synth strings / pads available. None of them are great (they're general MIDI sounds), but they're usable.
@@DrumGearGeek Thanks for the fast reply! I've been doing some research and maybe it has to do with my 3.5 to 5 pin MIDI adapter? I have a NOVATION LAUNCHKEY MINI MK3, and I see that it is using a new standard, Type A. Maybe my adapter is Type B. Apart from that I really have no idea how to test if it's something else happening.
@@alexugoku It might be worth getting something like MIDI Monitor (www.snoize.com/midimonitor/) -- Mac only, but I'm sure there are similar programs for PC -- to see exactly what's being sent from your keyboard. That would show you channel + note information that's being sent.
@@DrumGearGeek I tested with the standard MIDI (usb), and it works as expected. But the problem is still with the 3.5 midi out to 5 pin midi in of the drums.
@@DrumGearGeek Solved it! If anyone else is having this problem, I used a BOSS BMIDI-5-35 cable. And now I could test everything in this video, so helpful! Also having the ability to easily change channels on my keyboard, I just need 11 pattern to map every default GM instrument. Thank you so much for this video! It was one of the reasons I got this sample pad instead of another!
Hi! Thank you for your midi tutorial, that is exactly what is necessary for me, but there is one thing, you havent covered in your video: I would like to use it like 3 in 1 :). It means, apart those 2 you have reaveled, I would like to run third "voice/pattern" by external sequencer. Is it posible, and if your answer is yes, how to do that? RGDS Marek (happy owner of one)
Hi Marek - I haven't tried this myself, as I haven't done much with an external sequencer, but it _should_ be possible to use a sequencer (either internal or external) to play additional sounds. You'd need to send the appropriate program changes (as described in the video), but that's something that sequencer should be able to do built-in . The "trick" in this video was taking a plain keyboard controller (which generally doesn't have the ability to send it's own PC messages) and using the pattern section's program change functionality. In theory, you should be able to add _multiple_ tracks from an external sequencer, limited only by the number of MIDI channels + polyphony available.
@@DrumGearGeek Hello, again. Thank you for your prompt reply. But there is a certain but... :). The "macro" ,you have described, works with regular sequencer and regular sound module. Buying DTX ,I had hoped , it was the regular sound module with added features for drummers. But it is very far from. This is box with dosens,if not hundreds, super sounds, but with nightmarish user interface. It is easy to run demo (I still fight with) but not the other things. One can say, it is possible I am to simple for this gem :), but I work with many, many modules including those manufactured by Yamaha (f ex. Ex 5 R) and I have never met those fun-stealing obstacles. Thank you again, there was pleasure to meet you.
I'm looking to be able to assign chord tones to individual pads and, by manipulating gate time, be able to play a different sustained chord on each of the twelve pads. Is that possible?
Yup - each of the 4 notes in the chord (per pad) can have a separate note, gate length, and MIDI channel. I use this functionality a lot when layering bass lines with synth pads on the same DTX pad.
I’ve worked at this for several days and have been unsuccessful. Many different problems: midi note off commands, midi note assignments, midi channel assignment questions. Is there any way that you can provide a step by step outline for my programming dilemma? I’m trying to program six three-note chords onto the six main pads using MI28, LushSynStr, as my sound. I need the chords to last for 3 seconds each. I’d also like each pad strike to silence the previous sound to prevent overlap. The first chord is B minor in a lower octave. Thanks so much for your time. Any info would be appreciated.
@@mcilhoney1 What's the issue that you're having? What MIDI channel are you attempting to use for the pads? Whichever channel you're using, you need to make sure to enable the Tone Generator switch for that channel (MIDI2-1, page 66 in the manual)
Hi, I hope you can help, I set up like you said (and I have the exact same midi keyboard) but it doesn't play piano sounds. The keyboard has power because the lights come on... any ideas?
OK, scratch that, I did a factory reset and now it works perfectly! Thanks so much! The only thing now is... is it possible to tell it which octave I want? The glock and xylophone I've set up need to be an octave higher than the vibes. I can change this using the octave keys, but is there a way to do that automatically? Thanks so much for this game changing video!
@@genekrupafan Great to hear it's working now! My guess was that you probably had MIDI set to be sent only on USB (UTIL6-9), when it needs to be over MIDI/DIN. For the octave... hrmm. That's a good question! I'm not sure if there's a way to do that programatically. I'll play around a bit with it and see if I can come with anything.
@@genekrupafan In PTN3-4, make sure that you're not sending any program changes on channel 10. You can disable this by setting PTN3-1 to "Transmit = off" for Channel 10.
@@DrumGearGeek thanks so much. I have checked, and there are no midi programme changes set to channel 10. It doesn't do this for any of the empty patterns, so it must be something I've done. I'll try some more.
Is there a way to turn the piano sound (or gm sounds) off? I am using dtx multi 12 in combination with a beatstep pro, the sequencer from arturia and sequencing it along with two other synthesizers. The problem is that my dtx plays the melodic parts of the synts as well, which is a nightmare
You'll need to make sure to use separate MIDI channels -- anything that the DTX Multi 12 receives on an active channel will be played. For example, set your Beatstep Pro to send the melodics on channels 1 and 2, set your other synths to receive on channels 1 and 2 respectively, and make sure that the DTX Multi 12 is _not_ set to play anything on those two channels.
Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same issue and it seems to make midi thru useless. I don't see a way to set it to not play anything on a certain midi channel, it defaults to the piano sound for any channel not set otherwise. I'm trying to avoid sending a volume change to 0 on each channel but I haven't found another way. Hard to believe they would design in midi thru and even midi merge but then have all the channels play gm sounds with no way to turn them off.
To specify which channels you don’t want to play when using an external sequencer like your BSP, go into the DTXM12 MIDI settings, MIDI2-1 and turn the channels Off. So if you have synth on channel 6; bass on 7, turn those channels off and the DTXM12 won’t play those channels when the sequencer data is flowing through it. Manual pg 66
@@Ed_Miles Unfortunately, the TG switch only disconnects the tone generator from the 12 on-board pads. Sounds coming in through MIDI DIN or USB MIDI still will trigger the Yamaha tone generator. Worse still, channels 1-9 and 11-16 all default to having the GM piano sound selected, so even if you don't explicitly set up a patch, it'll still make a sound. My solution for this has been to either turn the volume down for a specific channel (MIDI3-2 menu -- done per-channel-per-kit) or to block ALL messages coming in from a specific channel using an external MIDI filter (I'm using an iConnectivity mioXM for my MIDI routing and it has a built-in filter that I'm using to filter out those messages) -- this is a bit of a blunt stick though, as it's not easy to change this per-kit / per-song.
How do I make the internal GM sounds (piano) stop responding to all MIDI channels. When I use with a sequencer it outputs piano sounds. I can't find anywhere in the manual where it addresses this. Help please.
Hi! That's a really important question, and one Yamaha doesn't explain very well in the manual. Basically, the MIDI 2 setting(TG/MIDI Switch, page 66 in the manual). The first setting "TG Switch" is basically a per-channel "MIDI Receive" setting. If defaults to "all channels on", so you'll need to go through each channel and turn it off if you want it to not playback signals from external MIDI. The second setting "MIDI Switch" is basically the opposite -- a per-channel "MIDI Send from Pads" setting. It also defaults to "all on", so if you're using the internal tone generator with melodic notes played by the pads, and you don't want to also send those notes to any attached devices, set that channel to "Off". Hope that helps!
@@DrumGearGeek Thanks for quick reply man! I tried turning them all off, still get the piano. This is very frustrating. And I am fairly advanced MIDI user. Even saved after this setting. This is apparently a per kit setting. Turned off BOTH in and out. Read that page just before I posted on your page first time.
@@saxmidiman ah dang. sorry - - I responded the way I _wished_ it worked. Sorry about that -- didn't actually remember how much of a pain this is. The setting actually disconnects signals from the pads only -- disconnecting them from the tone generator, or disconnecting from the midi out. There's not a way to block _external_ MIDI input, which is what you need to do. The way I did this was by implementing a channel block on my MIDI interface (MioXM from iConnectivity). I just block everything from being sent to the DTXMulti12 MIDI In on those channels. It's not ideal, as that's not set per-patch (apart from it requiring an additional piece of gear), but it's the best I could come up with.
is there a way of stopping it transmitting midi on all the other channels apart from 10, I'm trying to use the dtx as an external device triggering it from a launch pad but its taking up all my midi channels with its internal sounds. any idea how to turn them off? when my controler is on say midi channel 4 i'm getting a piano as well as my external synth sound. any ideas would help loads.
Yup -- you can use the MIDI2-2 settings page ("MIDI Switch") to enable / disable sending of MIDI signals to external sources. Note that this is set per-channel and per-kit. You can cycle through the channels and either turn the MIDI Switch "ON" (will transmit on that channel) or "OFF" (will not transmit on that channel). From your question it sounds like you might actually want to block the DTX Multi 12 from _receiving_ messages on a certain channel -- that's a little bit trickier, unfortunately. There's not really a way to turn that off -- I've had some luck in the past using MIDI3-2 to set the volume for a channel all the way down, all though that potentially can have issues with your external devices as well (note that do this, you'll also need to enable "all" transmission on MIDI3-1 for that channel). What I've done now is to use an external MIDI filter to block incoming signals. It's not ideal, but it's the only thing that's available. There _is_ a built-in way to prevent incoming messages on Channel 10, though (UTIL6-1) -- there's just not the same function for the other channels.
@@DrumGearGeek thanks for your reply. It's actually really helpful to know that there isn't a way because I can stop trying to find one. An external midi filter hey, that sounds like the thing for the job, Where might I find one of these?
@@edcross1289 I'm using the iConnectivity mioXM currently. It's a fantastic piece of kit, but probably a bit of overkill if you just need some filtering. @@DrumGearGeek you legend! I had no idea things like that existed. I'm pretty new to midi and your help is really appreciated. I will look into the midi solutions event processor and see how I get on. Thanks
I think I'm doing something wrong as I can't replicate this. If I create a pattern it changes the kit to be the Oak Custom every time. Even if I go to an empty pattern, then go to PTN3-1 then hit store without changing anything. If I go to the next empty pattern, then go to the kit and change kit I then go back to the ptn page and move back to the brand new pattern. The kit jumps back to oak custom. Transmit is set to off on every channel in the midi menu! Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Hi Tom - hmmm. Are you setting anything on PTN 3-4 page for channel 10? That's the only thing I could be thinking of that's setting the kit for a specific pattern. Although if Channel 10 on PTN 3-1 is set to "off", you shouldn't even have the options on PTN 3-4. Is there any additional equipment connected to the DTX via MIDI? Might be something with a transmitted PC message getting echoed back across the MIDI thru?
@@pigsfromagun4050 Again, I'm not sure what you're trying to do -- if you mean using the Yamaha DTX Multi-Touch app with this, then it requires at least iOS 12, which is available on iPad Air, iPad Pro, iPad Mini gen2 and above, and iPad gen5 and above.
@@DrumGearGeek thanks for your response I have yamaha 970 keyboard and also yamaha dtx 12 pad. In my keyboard it has some Indian rhythms so i want to use that rythms in dtx pad
Thanks for the clarification! I don't think the DTX can directly import patterns in that format. If you can get them exported to MIDI sequences, you may be able to load them in to the DTX using the "Import SMF" feature (PTN4-7 in the manual).
I don't mean to be obtuse, but you finally got to the point about 10 minutes in that basically sounded like: "I can play drum sounds on the pads and keyboard sounds on the keyboard." So why then do you need to connect them? Obviously you know exactly what you are talking about, so I've really missed the point.
Maybe the point here is that the Q25 has no built in sounds, so you were getting piano sounds from the DTX? (weird). But why not just use a regular keyboard? And how can you play both at the same time?
@@DrumGearGeek ahhhh, okay! So what's cool about this is by midi-connecting a cheap midi-controller keyboard, you have access to lots of sounds you cannot access with the pads. Got it.
I really want to possibly get the DTX for practice and for integrating into my kit (i have the alesis samplepad pro, which is junk), but I wish Yamaha would come out with an updated product (it's over 10 years old, and if I buy one, they'll launch the next version one year later, right? grrr)
Yup, exactly! They're general MIDI sounds, so definitely not the highest quality sounds (and not comparable to what you'd get from a dedicated keyboard or MIDI sound module), but they'll work in a pinch (especially some of the melodic percussion sounds like xylophone and glock -- I've used them in musical theater pits to cover occasional parts, using that same Q25 controller tucked under my hi hat)
Very helpful thank you. I had serious doubts that the yamaha was the right choice, after having already bought it, but this video convinced me I did ok. Thanks.

Wow very cool hidden features there. Great video
thank you!
I'm pretty sure it's a tone generator with 16-channels, multitimbral, and 'just' has the 64-voice general limit.
Channel 10, as far as I know, is the one that can access the user-drumkits (samples)
and the other 15 channels should at minimum be able to have unique general midi program-changes sent to them, thus enabling them to do stuff like playback full orchestra midis (I will be using it for castlevania-esque stuff as tests).
Cheers!
Excellent gear explanation
Ok, you man convinced me, this is a beast instrument! Thanks for the video
Haha excellent! Have fun!
Thank you! Was hoping you would post this video 👍
You're welcome! Sorry it took so long!
Great video! 2 questions:
1: Are you able to apply effects to the DTX’s Keyboard tones while controlling with MIDI?

Yup, that should work -- you just need to find out what notes the Alesis is sending out, and make sure it's sending on channel 10.
@@DrumGearGeek Thanks. I'll try it and let you know how it goes. There's "zero" info about this online...
It works! Once I got the midi settings on the Alesis right, the pads immediately mapped to the drum preset on the DTX. I had to change one or two of the Alesis pad midi notes to find the right sample but that was simple. Now the Alesis sounds the samples from the Yamaha DTX M 12! Awesome!

The 2 methods that occurred to me:
1.) Jack 13 is a 3-zone input, but is designed for a single, multi-area drum or cymbal.

(Are the general MIDI sounds presumably called up from the Motif series like everything else in the Multi 12 engine?)
Dig your humor after you call up the piano sound.
Thanks! I _think_ the sounds are from the Motif, although I haven't received confirmation of that. Glad you appreciate the humor! :)
Easy to appreciate a music maker clever enough to identify this bad boy as a “MIDI Swiss army knife”.

Awesome hack! Is it possible to adjust the volume for the keyboard independently of the volume from the pads?
Shawn Jordan hi Shawn - I’m on a gig right now and can’t test this, but my guess (emphasis on guess) is that if you send a MIDI volume controller message (CC #7) on the channel that you’re setting the melodic voices on, it SHOULD effect just that channel. If you can map one of the knobs on your MPK to that continuous controller, it might just work :)

Hi Troy - have you checked out my first review? Comparing the DTX Multi 12 and the Roland SPD-SX (ua-cam.com/video/Cdjukstht0E/v-deo.html)
HI, i'm am a DTX m12 user too. I notice that the User pattern i create are related to a specific KIT and specific pad while the Factory pattern already made play even if there is no sound in the kit. How can I make the same?
Thank you for this video!!!
Hi Francesco -- I'm not entirely sure what you're asking -- can you explain a little bit more?
When you want to make a pattern you have to create a new kit. The user pattern that I created works only on this new kit and when I change the kit and try to listen the pattern i made it works with differents sounds. With the factory pattern it doesn' t happen and the sounds doesn't change.
Thank you for responding
I do this:
1) I create a new kit and choose a sound for pad 1
2) I go to user pattern that is empty. Go to PTN3-1 and I choose for channel 10 Transmit=PC
3) I select M=125 L=001 PC=001 (that is my user kit)
4) Start to record pattern
5) Listen the pattern that i made
Everything is ok but if I choose my 001 User Kit the sound is right but while I play the pattern and I chenge the kit the sound change
This doesn't happend when i choose a factory pattern in a empty kit.
Thank you!! It solved my problem! I wasn't changing the midi channels to 1! Now it's working really good! UAU!!
Hello there, Thanks so much for this helpful tip. I was wondering is it possible for DTXM12 to trigger a full midi song from a pad?
Thanks!
Hi there, great video. How can i record a pattern on a kit and avoid it changing sounds when i import it to other kits? Thank you.
Hi - the pattern is always going to use whatever drum sounds (channel 10) are on the currently active kit. You can have the pattern load a specific kit as part of its loading process, but that will also change the sounds on the pads.
Ok thank you
Hey there, could you please tell me how to do program change with the combination of spd 30 and dtx...(kit change to both at a time?)
Drum Gear Geek Thank you so much! The midi 2-2 setting also saved me from some issues I was having. I kind of wish the manual was twice as thick.
@@TheGrelots Yeah, that's the biggest problem with the Yamaha stuff. The DTXMulti12 (and the EAD10) are SO powerful, but their interface is SO BAD, and the manuals don't really help either.
If you are able to use the keyboard in theory can you connect an older DTXtream midi into DTX12 and use the sounds through midi? On the Xtrem kit?
Yup, definitely -- controlling the drum sounds of the DTXMulti12 with the DTXtreme is pretty straigtforward -- just connect the MIDI and make sure to assign sounds to the MIDI notes coming out of the Xtreme. The trick in this video is more for running both drums AND melodics at the same time.
Fantastic - thanks
Hey there, do you know how I can start the click when striking a pad?
Yup! Set it up in page UTIL4-1. Change the pad function to "clickOn/Off"
Hey there, thanks so much for the DTX12 videos!
@@phonikaa Ahh, gotcha. Unfortunately there's no way to do that -- the actual settings are not externally modifiable (other than via the iOS app).

Here’s a question I sent to the DTX Yamaha clinician. Maybe you can ponder this as well?
Hi Simon,
So I did ask you about programming melodic patterns from an external keyboard.
John
Confirmed -- you can record patterns into the DTXM12 via a keyboard connected as above.
@@mcilhoney1 Yes, kits have a tempo set in KIT2-2. You can set this tempo to "off" which will default to the previous / system tempo.
can you make a good suggestion for an amp to play the sounds from the dtx through (and how does that change if I also would like to play some 808's as well)?
In general, I'd recommend staying away from instrument amplifiers -- I've had a lot of luck with powered PA speakers, like the QSC K12.2 or K10.2. If you want the best sound, especially for something like an 808 kick, you'll also need a subwoofer. Note that if you're already playing through a big PA, you won't need ADDITIONAL speakers -- just play through the house PA. But if your PA is just a small one used for vocals, it probably won't cut. :/

Good luck!

@@alexugoku It might be worth getting something like MIDI Monitor (www.snoize.com/midimonitor/) -- Mac only, but I'm sure there are similar programs for PC -- to see exactly what's being sent from your keyboard. That would show you channel + note information that's being sent.

Yup - each of the 4 notes in the chord (per pad) can have a separate note, gate length, and MIDI channel. I use this functionality a lot when layering bass lines with synth pads on the same DTX pad.
Can I play the chord tones on an external midi keyboard into the DTX or do I have to program all parameters on board?

@@plateoshrimp9685 I'm looking for this too! ever figure it out?!!
Genius!!!
Thank you!
For some reason I can get this to save when I turn on/off… any help to make this save?
Hrmm... Not sure, haven't seen that before. Are you explicitly saving the pattern itself?
is there a way of stopping it transmitting midi on all the other channels apart from 10, I'm trying to use the dtx as an external device triggering it from a launch pad but its taking up all my midi channels with its internal sounds. any idea how to turn them off? when my controler is on say midi channel 4 i'm getting a piano as well as my external synth sound. any ideas would help loads.
While I haven't used it for this specific purpose, I've used a MIDI Solutions Event Processor to do this type of filtering in the past -- they're rock solid tools!
@@DrumGearGeek you legend! I had no idea things like that existed. I'm pretty new to midi and your help is really appreciated. I will look into the midi solutions event processor and see how I get on. Thanks
@@edcross1289 Nice, glad to help!
thank you very much, for the informations and research. very helpful!! :)
Thank you for the comment, glad I could help!
Tom--I've having the exact same issue. Every time I change the pattern, the kit changes to Oak Custom. Did you ever get this resolved?
Same problem here. Any solutions yet?
Well done ! Thanks buddy !
Thank you!
I want video about adjusting tone equalizer and variations
Hi Sherif -- I'm not sure what you're trying to do -- can you give me more details? Thanks!
so I can controll it with a midi keyboard?
Yup!
Dude you sound exactly like Data from Star Trek
Maybe Commander Data sounds exactly like ME? 🤯

So I could make a drum pattern on the Yamaha and add melodic parts to the beat?
That's correct!

Which ipad is compatible with this?
Sorry, not sure what you're asking. What are you trying to do with an iPad?
@@DrumGearGeek I wanted to get a iPad to use this pad through just wondering which one would do gen1,, gen2,,,? ECT
@@DrumGearGeek yes exactly thanks.
How to import yamaha keyboard ppf rythms to dtx 12 pad ?
Hi - I don't think that's that the DTX supports. Can you tell me what you're trying to do?
@@DrumGearGeek thanks for your response
I have yamaha 970 keyboard and also yamaha dtx 12 pad.
@@DrumGearGeek can you make a video for it!
Sorry, I don't have anything with those file formats -- I don't really do much with the DTX sequencer, to be honest. Thanks!
You are a genius!
Thank you!
Sir plese explain me yamah dtx m12 with roland spd 30 through midi cnnection
Hi, I don't have an SPD-30, so I may not be able to help, but if you let me know what you're trying to do, I'll try and give it a shot!
How can I simultaneously have multiple PC's for one beat pattern?
Hi Miles -- you can set up 16 PCs by using a different MIDI channel for each one.
Drum Gear Geek will it save it if I turn it off?
Drum Gear Geek ps and if so how do I do it?
You need to save the Pattern by using the "Store" button -- you can see me doing this at 11:40 in the video (for example).
Disregard. Got it was not in user pattern.....
I don't mean to be obtuse, but you finally got to the point about 10 minutes in that basically sounded like: "I can play drum sounds on the pads and keyboard sounds on the keyboard."
So why then do you need to connect them?
Obviously you know exactly what you are talking about, so I've really missed the point.
Maybe the point here is that the Q25 has no built in sounds, so you were getting piano sounds from the DTX? (weird). But why not just use a regular keyboard? And how can you play both at the same time?
Yup, that's the point -- all of the sounds generated in this video were from the DTX Multi 12. The Q25 is just a MIDI controller, not a keyboard.
WOW!
Thank you! :)
