Thanks, I agree with Stephen, I don't think I would try it with anything too expensive, but I find it can make a noticeable difference in ink flow. On higher end pens, I prefer to start with using a wetter ink and a bulb syringe on every 2nd refill to flush out residue to increase flow that way. Your video was informative though. Keep it up!
Thanks. Yes that would be my preference. This Pelikan 805, as I checked, was inked with Sailor Ozone blue, a limited edition ink, pretty wet performer. Still the flow was very constricted. And despite washing the unit several times by taking it out, the problem persisted. Later I checked this flow on different paper and found the wide line was more of ink slightly blotting out on the paper while making this video rather than the tip being opened wide. So the fifth method was holding its ground as regards performance.

I did your wing spread and it was intimidating to try but it sure worked. I was careful and made it just a bit wetter. Not as drastic as your example but surely an improvement. This video is about a year old now but if you see this, I just want to say thanks!

Thanks very much. With your guidance I could remedy a long standing issue related to a yovo fine nib running very dry. In my experience yovo no 5 nibs in fine are way too dry. Yes your hack related to pressing the nib on the two outer flanks made a big difference. Thanks dear. You saved me a nib
I think the hacks should be performed from 5 to 1. Start with the least intrusiive mods on the nib. Modify the feed last, since it is a totally irreversible procedure.
Thank you for this very informative video. I think a razor blade is far too thick to push between the tines. Some people use a thin sheet of brass. Much better than both is a set of 'feeler gauges'. Mechanics use these to measure and set very small gaps with a high degree of accuracy. They are inexpensive. Essentially they are a set of very thin polished steel sheets. Simply start with the finest and work up until the nib is wet enough. It takes seconds and no tine mis-aligning lateral leverage is needed. I learned quite a bit from this video. Thank you.
I’ve got a nice Monteverde EF nib that was writing dry and not keeping up with my fast writing. I tried #2 and #5 and it opened up very nicely. Thanks!
Time is the only true test, but I think deepening the channels on my Conklin Duraflex just made it go from being literally unusable to tolerably obnoxious! Great tips!
I’m new to fountain pens and this was very informative thanks a lot. I have a TESBI ECO and LAMY SAFARI both in white . One with a Medium Nib and one in a Fine Nib. They both write well but in case I ever needed this information I have it

A problem with making a nib too wet is that the ink will bleed through to the other side of the paper. Drier pens are more versatile in terms of the paper you can use.
you should know when the issue is feed or nib, if the nib starts wet then suddenly chokes after a bit of writing i'd change the feed, otherwise the nib. sometimes the air channel being too narrow can choke the nib too.
My new pen becomes dry after1-2min of writing, how can i solve this? At the start it writes perfectly, but then the line becomes pale. If i take the cartridge off and put it back in, pen writes perfect again, but like i said - not for long...
Guess what? Your little spreading technique (applied very carefully) solved a problems of restricted flow I had with MB 146. Cheers!

Try giving your pen a thorough wash in water with a little washing up liquid, then rinsing. There could be some oil in the pen.
