1972 i was an AB on this ship but the name was ALTE LIEBE. 18.6. i met a girl
on board going from Hamburg to Helgoland ( and back ). Now , over 50 jears
later, she is still my wife.

Remember the cleaning issues with small tiles, lots of grout, and tight spaces. The larger the tile and thinner the grout lines the better off you will be. The nasty pipe in the corner of the room needs to be closed in. The electrical all needs to be water proof rated and what I see is not even close. This is an amazing project and you certainly have your hands full.

Thanks for the thoughts. I agree with the large tile theory. Makes a lot of sense. The electrical will be replaced as needed with marine grade wire. The last thing I would ever cut corners on is electrical.

Remember that ships move, flex and vibrate (when they run), large tiles have a tendency of cracking. Modern cruise ship bathrooms are usually wet units (all in one) installed in the stateroom and tiles are usually fake. They're printed or stamped onto the walls to prevent cracking and leaks. On the ships I work on, real tile is usually kept for the public areas only for maintenance reasons.

I liked the grey and white version of the dot tile and the octagon and square next to it. It's a softer look for an ensuite but would work with the vintage theme. Pink and grey was so typically used together. The grey would work with the aqua, mint and lemon bathroom fixtures used then so you could keep the look cohesive without having to do all the bathrooms with pink sinks.

I have to say, I like the little white round tiles too...maybe the glass ones would look good as well. The fixtures are going to be fun to track down, some towns have a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store and that is a great source for contractor overstock items.

As an ex-marine engineer in new zealand, i;d love to work on a project on a large cruise ship like the Aurora, but the cost of restoring a large ship like the Aurora, in new zealand are hidesitly espencive.
I am working and repairing old marine lister diesel generators, i had to order conrod bolts from Australia because they are not available in NZ.
However i'll be enjoying watching the Aurora restoration project untill she is in full operational and the sea trials. I can't wait to see and hear those massive mercedes diesels up and running... keep up the good work

They make all kinds of different tiles and could send you a catalog of the different tiles they make. They are an Italian Tile Company and are very good people to work with. They are based out of Mt. As Garyjarvis2730 mentioned about the cleaning aspect with the tiles, stick with less grout line. I was a janitor for 13 yrs. Alot of older schools had the smaller tiles and it was horrific to clean, even with a power washer. I'd definitely recommend as little groutline as possible. :)
While i understand there are alot of different grout cleaners out there, its best to keep cleaning simple.
By all means though, it's your project and I'm just a woman enjoying restoration projects.

If you don't have one yet, I can't recommend enough the most magical tool ever for removing rusted screws and light bolts and nuts - its called a "shake n break" and goes on the end of any old air impact hammer. It's not like an impact driver since it doesn't twist the screw as it vibrates, it just vibrates the hell out of the screw head and you gently turn it by hand with the driver handle. It's $50 and has paid for itself a hundred times over for me on rusty screws and small bolts that would absolutely have sheared off any other way.
Only downside is it requires air and a small cheap pneumatic air hammer but I can't begin to stress just how well that stupid little tool works on the most corroded stuff.

Find a plumbing supply house that has a showroom. You are looking for the "T&S" brass faucet line. they have the look, are solid brass with plated finish and nearly indestructible- also repairable. They have hardware that should fit most every cabin and kitchen piece you will need. All from one Mfg, one parts train. Btw, "Made in the USA" last I looked. Same people should be able to show you some lavy bowls as well as toilets . But your lead pipe supply will need to be removed and redone- I don't know of any presently made porcelain that will use it. I'm thinking you should be at least resolving all the "behind or under the floor issues " before you start tiling.

I think if I were you I would get a corner shower unit to help contain the water exposure for the bathrooms of this size. Something like the Breeze 32 in. L x 32 in. W x 72.81 in. H Round Corner Shower Kit with Clear Framed Sliding Door in Chrome and Shower Pan. Home depot has these for example. This has a simple look that can meld well with a retro 60's look. It will cut down on all the tile work and the small round tiles will look good with a corner shower unit. They can be rounded off or squared off etc. Go with what looks the best. If you choose to go with the exposed hot cold water lines to the shower head like are there now it will look good that way also. The Electrical definitely needs replacing and I would look at LED replacements that look like they are from the 60's like the Czech ceiling lights or Amorphous Czech wall sconce lights.

And you have no idea yet of the quality of the structure behind the board yet... You have supply lines, drain lines and vents that you might want to put IN the walls behind that board and drains to go under the floor repair...

I would just forgo tile all together and just have concrete floors. It'll be cheaper, and way longer lasting. Easier to clean and maintain. you can stain and seal them. and realistically if you perp them you could do them all at once and it'll save you a ton of time. I would even just consider doing the bedroom floors the same way. I get people want to keep it retro but why. Im sure the original owners would have loved to have updated it all. Why not make it look better than ever while also being stronger than ever. My opinion would be to update all the bedrooms and if you wanna keep anything retro/vintage, just make all the public spaces so.

Possibly to see what works well and the likely problems rather than have a contractor guess and bake in a large margin for error. I am getting more into this channel with the level of detail shown recently. I think he would be well advised to talk to a couple of boat chandlers to understand more of the gotchas but I suspect he has a lot of experience and friends in the marine industry. The only thing I would have done slightly differently is to avoid tossing any original fittings until the final project plan is set in stone. Many of these items can be used to repair the nicer ones if he wishes to have a few "retro" cabins e.g. towel rails have survived 40+ years of use so they might seem flimsy but obviously are tougher than they look !
One thing he might want to look at is to merchandise some of the excess original fittings to channel viewers - "Your little piece of Aurora at home ..."
Look forward to seeing how he decides !

Smaller sink and cabinet will give you more room. Shower curtains are hard to keep clean a single pane of glass or a half wall would be better.

I feel a scream at the screen coming on. Remove any wood, replace the wood with thin set cement on the floor. The entire bathroom is part of the shower, the curb at the entrance keeps the water in and flowing to the drain. Try to keep porous products to a minimum to control mold and mildew.
For the floor tiles, find some with a "matte" surface for slip resistance. The shower corner should have non-porous surfaces, perhaps going all the way to the overhead. Period specific choices should lean away from 1970 avocado and towards the the blue of the paint.
Check the distance from the bulkhead to the center of the water closet drain, and select a toilet based on that measure. Otherwise, it is cut and weld time for a closet flange. The existing waste pipe looks to be Oakum and Lead.

You do realize that it is a drainage pipe. We won’t be reusing use the same but many old ships have lead drainage pipes.

I see you are looking at one cabin but this one cabin is part of a system of interconnected cabins. Wouldn't it be easier to gut the cabins entirely then reimagine the cabins as they may have been replacing all of the wiring and plumbing in one go? Former owners did no justice to the spaces and destroyed what was once a nice living space.

    • @AuroraRestorationProject
      @AuroraRestorationProject  Рік тому +1

This cabin is part of a block of 5 cabins. Those 5 cabins will be turned into 3 cabins. Two with large spaces and this small cabin we are digging into now. Your 100% correct. If I replace the plumbing on one I have to do them all. Have already mapped everything out and I’m prepared to run new pipe to all.

I had a thought on your cabins, I'll throw it out there. In India and Bangladesh they ship breaking cruise ships. Modern cruise ship cabins are made of steel and are unitized, just roll them in and plug them in. I wonder if you could make a deal with them to get a bunch of cabins and have them shipped over. Crazy idea but you could get a lot of material that you need at a much lower cost than the hardware store.

I understand the need for retro but I don`t think its a good idea in shower/toilet areas. People expect high quality amenities on cruise ships today which means wet rooms which need to be sealed from the main structure to avoid corrosion. Also the materials need to be able to withstand daily cleansing. An amazing project and I wish you well ... Best wishes from the UK

following your project from the very beginning here from Germany! Keep the great work up! Don´t expect too much from Helgoland - it was build up from ruins so all post WWII architecture to look in 60´s and 70´s style... Never the less a nice day trip on the sea from Cuxhaven or even Hamburg.

I'd be using postcard images from 50s or 60s from the destinations she visits, blown up and used as each room's decor theme. It would make each room more like a boutique hotel rather than generic matchy matchy. But I'd put in a teak panelled feature wall in each to link to the modernist/nautical past and give continuity to the look of the cabins. The bathroom mostly needs those ugly pipes concealed in the design. Using decorative niches to embed essentials to make it look intentional would work.

I'm going to assume that you will be restoring more than one bathroom. As such, you should be reaching out to manufacturers for bulk discounts and sponsorship (ala "This Old House") Manufacturers will also help you with design expertise. I'm sure you have lots of storage space for bulk deliveries. Buying retail for your project will kill you.

I would like to see a cream bathroom with wood tone trim . A molded shower and matching wall mount toilet. Glass tiles for accents and backsplash with two tone tile on the deck. You could do this in every cabin and just change the floor tiles if you want other colors.

  • @ruby055
    @ruby055 Рік тому +2

Those small tiles would be 20s to mid 40s. By the 50s and 60s you would have larger tiles with combos tile pink and black or green and beige.
