an amazing video .. n im 50yrs old n in the game since i was 16yrs old .. Tnx .. "im loving my MPC live & totally agree with your conclusions refarding working in 1 groove box n staying as dawless as possible"
I've had it two days and I'm blown away at the possibilities. I wasn't really looking to buy any new equipment, I was just in the process of getting back into my gear after a bit of neglect due to work, mostly as I work away from home a lot. I'd just bought an old XP laptop to get Aksys running again for my 4000 and fitted new pad sensors. It was only while searching for that stuff I stumbled on the Live. Perfect for me as I've been away 3 months this year and will probably be away another 2 before year end. It's re-invigorated my creative juices and the fact I can take it with me when I'm travelling will hopefully keep them flowing. Keep up the good work, best Live/X vids on UA-cam that I've seen, knowledgeable, helpful and inspiring, delivering on every level. Respect Mr Digga
I just looked at my live the other night and giggled because it’s exactly what I’ve always wanted since I’ve started making electronic music (when I was 12 on fruity loops )
Wow! So fun man! I have an MPC Live and really enjoy your tutorials. Endless possibilities with the way you can manipulate just about anything in a fraction of a traditional studio wth the MPC Live. Thanks!!!
I’ve been really loving using warp and fudging the tempo down to 20 and messing with audio rate LFOs. Maybe I should do a video. I’ve been getting glitched stuff that compares to OT easily. Don’t be afraid of warp + extreme pitching / LFOs..... so so sick
Incredible video thank you dear Tube Digga! I just wonder if you could please assist where to look for something i'd love to achieve, (ive already been trying for weeks since i got the mpc live).. Basically, I wish to Record a synth line (lets say a vst of a Solina string synth) then, make a seamless loop of it (ive been trying but keep getting a pop/cliping sound no matter how i try connect the loop) then add a bit of decay.. to sound close to actually using the synth on the mpc, thats my goal. Any help at all would be deeply appreciated, thank you!!
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯😳🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 I even don’t know what to say about this ..... I’m back in music after 25 years, so I watched the market and decided to buy my first 2 machines, a MPCX and a HYDRAsynth because I felt they have HUGE potential if you dig them. Holy shit I was so right.................. Just 2 months with them and I already know that I will keep them all my life, because I prefer to understand and use everything about just 2 or 3 machines for making music instead of buying hundreds of stuff and just 10% of their potential... So this video to me is SO FUCKING IMPORTANT...... THANK YOU SO MUCH SINCERELY 🙏 I’m so happy......... Big salut from France 🙋♂️ 1980’ Vinz.
If you could own both the MPCX and the live would you. I’m thinking the live is good for performance/travel and the MPCX can just sit in the studio it’s too big to to pack every trip
Yes I would, was just thinking this yesterday as I didn’t want to be in my studio al day :) I miss the portability. But I do prefer working on the X overall.
I've done this a different way but this seems a lot better for saving sample time. Can you do a tutorial on how to save programs and sounds. I'm having trouble doing that. But thank you for this because you've helped temporarily stopped me from buying a Yamaha MODX for the time being. I will simply sample from my Reface DX into the MPC and attempt to make my own FM sounds into a MPCDX. Lol. Just need to know how to save them and be able to recall them. For now I create, make a song, record it to DAW and erase the song from the mpc including the sound I made because I dont know how to save anything to recall.
I just found out that there is about 60 instrument sounds that come with the akai live, and over 200 some drum kits. My question for anyone that owns one is, isn't there any synth sounds, like a square lead, bells, choir or orchestral sounds? I heard that there is no choir or orchestral sounds at all that come with the live when you first get it? Is that true? Then, I heard other videos where a guy was going through sounds, and I heard bells, strings, and some voicy sounds? Can anybody explain what sounds besides drums that there are on the vault 2.0? Thanks y'all.
Wow, you did it, you've made the video I requested. Great work sir! And thank you! Very informative and revealing. I'm reworking my studio, I've been on Cubase for 15 years, would you consider the X and the Akai software a good value? I'm looking at the X as a controller for the software also. I'm wondering if it's worth twice as much as the Live as I could just wire up the Live to my existing setup. But the X might make a great centerpiece for a new layout.
If you want to sequence/control modular and not worry about the size when playing Live, and you can afford the X then yes, it’s worth it. I considered it but wanted a machine just as powerful that I could throw in a backpack and play out with. Glad you liked the video, please spread the word!
TUBE DIGGA yes! Really enjoying your videos, they show the more interesting aspects of what these machines are capable of. I think the Live will be enough for me, I don't have any modular, just a few synths, so the X might be overkill. Looking forward to more of your videos, well done stuff. 👍
Hello Tube Digger I must say that all of your videos are very inspiring and informative. My question to you is that I’m a beginner in sampling and I’ve been looking at the Akia MPC Live to purchase, but after doing more research I’m finding out that the Machine Mk3 is a better buy, and dose what the Mpc Live can do but much faster, and for me you have a lot less sub menus to deal with. For me being a beginner this is very important. Don’t get me wrong the MPC Live dose some great things. But for me it’s about getting your ideas and work flow down fast and not have to be dealing with a lot of sub menus. If machine makes the next Mk4 standalone this will be a game changer . The Mk3 is a stand alone unit to a certain point. I would appreciate your comments and keep up the great work FAAJR1, Lafayette Louisiana The dirty south
I owned a Maschine MK1 but didn’t get on with it. I had two MPC Live’s before the one I currently have as they both had issues (first batch problems). I nearly gave up and exchanged it for Maschine Mk3 as I was interested in the scene morph feature. But I stuck with the MPC as I ultimately wanted a standalone machine. I’ve currently got a DJS-1000 on loan from Pioneer and it’s proving to be a very decent machine, you may want to look at that. Not nearly as deep as Maschine or MPC, but what it does do is very slick and I’m pretty sold on it to be honest. Very simple in the best possible way, and complex enough to get some great results. The sound quality is very good too.
This is a awesome vid, would you be able to do another one on a similar tip. Maybe going a bit further in, and then playing synth sample over a beat. I’m thinking of pairing a mpc up with my tempest, this night have just made me get one
Question , is this synthesis basically fm or subtractive ? And do you really believe this method can be used for amazing sound design ? Should I not purchase a dx7 I already own a live and been looking into sound designing heavily
Yo Tube Digga ..thanks for these videos. I'm really torn at the moment between the Mpc live and Roland TR-8s. I really dig the sound of the Mpc live but haven't figured a way to use it in a live performance (ironically), can you share your thoughts on setting up for a live performance with the Mpc live please?
To date the two most effective ways in my opinions are either pre- preparing a ton of loops (preferably staying at the same tempo if you're happy to do that), and staying in one track using one clip program (I have a video on this). Alternatively it's all about creating sequences, duplicating them, altering them/change ups etc and copying programs/swapping out samples. i may do a more comprehensive video on this soon so stay tuned :)
TUBE DIGGA Hey thanks for your response. I think the sequence option may be more flexible but then again, controlling the volume of each track/instrument in real time becomes an issue. Some artists like Mr. G have overcome this by routing each instrument to it's own output on a mixer and then blends each instrument in and if you watch some of his live performances you see he just sticks to tweadling the mixer while switching sequences on the Mpc. Unfortunately, Mpc live only has 4 separate outputs so that's an issue.
Hey TD, could you do a video showing the workflow multi tracking parts using audio? I understand in standalone you only get 8 audio tracks but no one has showed this, some folks are still interested in these machines as basic recorders. So if you lay 8 stereo or mono tracks down can you still trigger one shots and have loops assigned within the project? I'd like to see audio tracks pitched or just messed with, something like what you might do with an octotrack. Really insightful videos, thanks!
Hi Tube Digga, I love your videos. I would like to ask you for an advice. I am thinking about buying a sampler/sequencer/drum machine for my setup. I am interested in a machine that could give me the possibility of making ambient music with atmospheric pads, soft loops and glitchy beats. So I am not searching for a simple drum machine. I have an Elektron Digitone and a Deepmind 12 and I am thinking about adding an MPC Live or an Elektron Octatrack to my setup. Thanks to your videos I understood that MPC could be a good choice. Am I right or do you think that an Octatrack would match better my goals? Thank you for your attention and for your very interesting and useful videos (I subscribed the channel ;-D )
Hi, the MPC Live is more capable than the Octatrack when it comes to overall sound quality, musicality (regarding sequencing and musical tools) and physical routing options (more outputs etc). The Octatrack is great for live performance and is probably best suited for that out of the two machines. You can easily get lost in all the glitchy and fun modulation options, but at the expense of an amount of clarity. Things can get crowded quite quickly and the sound to me at least, appears thinner and muddy at times in comparison to the MPC live. Both are brilliant machines, but once you grasp the MPC workflows (which there are a vast amount due to how it caters for many different approaches) you'll learn to love it I'm sure. If you can afford the X then it is worth it - it really is in my opinion the best standalone device out there by far.
@@TUBEDIGGA Thanks a lot! I know the MPC X is a great, very powerful machine. Unfortunately, my budget is quite limited, I think I'll go for the MPC Live. And then I'll have too watch all your videos once again in order to learn how to get the best out of it!
Trade Whales I’m afraid not. I’d say either use a VST compressor in controller mode once you’re happy with the elements you wish to use the compression on, then bounce/export those and bring them back in to the Live. Or use Ableton’s compressor if you have it? It means stepping out of stand-alone for a while, but it’s no different than making some samples on a computer then importing them back in to Live. Press and hold shift whilst simultaneously pressing pad 2, 6, 87, note repeat and turning the data wheel 720 degrees anti-clockwise. Once the ignition sequence starts, type CHOCOLATE SUPER DONKEY into the search bar. Five dots will appear across the bottom of the screen, then you’ll be able to access the legendary FOLDER OF MEXICANS. Press and hold shift, choose LOAD ALL, then some smoke will appear from outputs 7/8. The lasers will be beamed through the smoke as long as you set all pads to NOTE ON with an amplitude envelope release time of 68.2. Enjoy!
Mr. Mizu 😂 Yes I used to spell CHOCOLATE wrong, it’s easily done. I used to spell it C-H-O-C-U-L-I-T-E for many, many years. Then one day, my Aunty Derick said ‘Tube, you’re a dick - literally a tube, but full of urine’. And from that day on I’ve never enjoyed mushroom soup.
Hey I really wanna know if I need to setup the hi hat rolls u demonstrated in other video . I wanna know if u make the roll key group hi hats when u change the tempo do you ha e recalculate numbers ... kinda stupid question I assume so but I would hope not cause every you change tempos u must do again?
Mike Hawk Not a stupid question at all! Yeah unfortunately if you change the tempo you’d have to create new loops based on different calculations - but the workaround is to increase or decrease the pitch to match other tempos, as long as you don’t go too far out of range. Best to choose a BPM that you use most often and create a drum program with your note repeat hats for that tempo
TUBE DIGGA with dat note repeat later can I do automation pitch shift on them make them pitch up and down with a links? If so do u ha e any video on this? I am looking as we speak today and tomorrow just got mpc x thx videos I will be watching I’m so lost
Moky Larry You can’t change the pitch as that will either increase or decrease the speed of the loops - unless you warp the samples but then it will sound very bad and probably quite messy. If you want to do note repeats with pitch bends then you’ll have to just use note repeat as normal with single one shot samples, ideally in a key group program where you can use a pitch mod wheel to bend the samples or just play them up and down to the pads. Or in a drum program using 16 levels.
J Costello It’s added ‘pitch quantise’ which is kind of similar to the pad performance mode, in that it corrects/forces sequenced notes (from either drum programs or key groups) to work in a particular scale. That’s probably the most interesting and useful feature. The full change list is here: www.akaipro.com/support/kb/articles/akai-pro-mpc-x-and-mpc-live---firmware-update-2.1-walkthrough#release
No, that's why I made my own :) I wish they would implement the MPC5000 synth, that would be amazing, as I have a ton of MPC5000 synth programs that I need to rename and organise.
that's all pretty cool, yet in the context of a song arrangement almost worthless, as you can't automate _any_ of the keygroup parameters or Q-Link them. a whole world of musical possibilities remains inaccessible due to that. as this severe handicap still persists in the most recent firmware update, akai obviously could not care less. true bummer. and btw: the basic idea behind this is the same as it has been done since the "invention" of amiga chiptunes in the late 80ies.
You can automate most of the parameters of a keygroup program in the same way that you can with a drum program although you have to use the qlink modes and assign the parameters you wish to automate. Regarding it being a worthless thing to do in the context of a song - it's an interesting sound design technique that isn't explicitly mentioned in the manual as are many of my tutorials. It's extending the use of the machine for sound design and sound generation that you can use in a song if you wish. MPCs aren't just for creating songs, the are for creating content to use in songs, and they are very good at it.
1200,-- USD and all you can get out of it is a shitty (!) sounding fart? Oh dear. Nothing against you, as your video is good and usefull but the MPC is not.

If you want to do note repeats with pitch bends then you’ll have to just use note repeat as normal with single one shot samples, ideally in a key group program where you can use a pitch mod wheel to bend the samples or just play them up and down to the pads. Or in a drum program using 16 levels.
Moky Larry I do Skype lessons if you’re interested, pm me on Facebook (@tubedigga)
Had to watch it twice lol
C.BROADY Go on, watch it again:)
Did the latest firmware upgrade 2018 make noticeable changes?
J Costello It’s added ‘pitch quantise’ which is kind of similar to the pad performance mode, in that it corrects/forces sequenced notes (from either drum programs or key groups) to work in a particular scale. That’s probably the most interesting and useful feature. The full change list is here: www.akaipro.com/support/kb/articles/akai-pro-mpc-x-and-mpc-live---firmware-update-2.1-walkthrough#release
Thanks
Very interesting tutorials ..... subscribed for more :-)
Nice one ☝️ thanks 🙏
Wow.
Beautiful, if you like that sort of thing lol
:)
Just ordered it. Not playing. Swear and I'm getting a access virus desktop too.
Why the virus just curious
Nice ! They didn't implement a synth ?!? O_o
No, that's why I made my own :) I wish they would implement the MPC5000 synth, that would be amazing, as I have a ton of MPC5000 synth programs that I need to rename and organise.
Tony Blair punched a dude? Turns out I get all my news from gear tutorials
It was actually another MP called John Prescott, but I edited the recording :)
@@TUBEDIGGA 2 Jags went HAM.
its a mosquito :)
that's all pretty cool, yet in the context of a song arrangement almost worthless, as you can't automate _any_ of the keygroup parameters or Q-Link them. a whole world of musical possibilities remains inaccessible due to that. as this severe handicap still persists in the most recent firmware update, akai obviously could not care less. true bummer. and btw: the basic idea behind this is the same as it has been done since the "invention" of amiga chiptunes in the late 80ies.
I love people like you so much...
You are so stupid that you’re even not able to understand it if we explain you why, that’s fascinating me so much...
