Mahalo for the amazing video about our island Maui and one of its most sacred and spooky places. I’ve heard so many stories about Iao valley and the haunting a that happen. I had a friend who was there around 10pm at night with a few others and he decided to throw his beer can out of the car and as soon as he did that they started to hear the sound of a woman crying and as soon as he stepped out of the car to retrieve it the crying sounds turned into screaming and once he got it the screaming stopped and they got the heck out of there. I also have an uncle who is 75% Kanaka and years ago when he was younger before they ever started locking gates to the monument, he was there on a trail picking to leaf and flowers to make lei and it started getting dark so he decided he’d just spend the night there. The story goes that he was woken up in the middle of the night by pebbles being thrown at him out of nowhere, he figured it was the spirits just messing with him and decided to ho back to sleep, then a few minutes later he heard the sound a huge boulder crashing a few feet away from him… he then found a different spot to sleep and wasn’t bothered for the rest of the night. I’ve always heard stories of hearing the sound of a plane and a baby crying on some nights due to the plane crash that happened there many years ago and also it’s said that on nights of the Night Marchers if you take a white shirt and place it in the river it will become stained with the blood of th me fallen kanaka who fought in the battle of Kepani’wai
This was cool to know I’m from Maui too and been interested in knowing more stories too I’m mostly know east side where I’m from but I have a Hawaiian priest uncle who told me once in high school that he had to do a exorcism on a girl back when they didn’t lock the gates and was told never go there after 6. @@Sunnierayana222 wow that’s nuts!! I’ve heard also to never go there after hours, and I’ve definitely felt a weird presence a few times while drinking by the bathrooms at night but luckily never experienced anything. And there’s a lot more stories I’ve heard over the years but can’t remember them all, however I do recall there used to be a video on UA-cam of Iao in which you can actually see a ghostly apparition near the Korean temple but idk if it’s still on here.

Mahalo for sharing! Many people has their stories of iao valley and those I’ve heard and have encountered myself are very similar. Especially when you gotta sleep up there to save and reserve your spot for your party. I have had to reserve a spot at the pavilions many times throughout my life and have experienced the drums of the night marchers and saw their lights of the torches. Also musket fire and occasional cannon fire. I’m not sure if the times we went were on the anniversary of the war or it happens every full moon, but we only experienced those sound’s during a full moon, and i could feel the energy was trying to drive/push me away. Or it just was trying to get us to leave and not go walking into the trail those times. I’ve never been back there at night, but one day I’ll go and take a sound recorder to catch all of the Evps.
I also was allowed to stay in the park area after hours the park workers were always nice to me and we would talk story. Anyway one night i was out there and it was really late like three AM late and I heard these drums coming from deep inside the valley. I'm not talking about a few hippies with some drums like at little beach there must have been hundreds of them because the sound filled the whole valley and was echoing off the valley walls. I hadn't heard anything else that night before that and can only believe that they were ghost drums for a few reasons. Those reasons being a. The late hour nobody in Maui stays up that late b. The number of drums and the unique rhythms of Hawaiian drummers c. The remoteness of the location i was in the park area and the gate to the parking lot was locked nobody drove in there and i don't think anyone had hiked in there from Lahaina or Kahana or any places like that. It really was weird and definitely spooky.
In October 23 my bro and I flew into Maui. I'd seen, heard, felt, etc supernatural all my life. But it wasn't until recently that I accepted it. Strong men traveling right? It seemed weird. I had to really stare out the window b/c I felt it more than saw anything. I thought maybe I had seen some hikers, but at that height I seriously didn't think I could get any distinguishing features. but no one was there! The plane landed. I got my baggage and went outside. I made a silent, inconspicuous offering- saying 'greetings, I am just visiting and will be leaving after a short stay, I have an offering from my people but I am sorry if it's not to your liking. I don't know your customs and your ways, but I will do my very best to be a respectable guest. I am honored to visit you and your land.' You should do that wherever you go. At least a "I honor you, your people, and your land. Thank you for having me." kind of thing. The condo had a wall facing the ocean. However, it was made of glass so you could see the ocean :) Or maybe you could ten years ago. The bushes kinda grew. Still, quite beautiful. I slept in the living room. At about 3AM I turned, opened my eyes, and peeking through the glass- the whole "wall" of glass were native Hawaiians checking me out. Or their spirits. They turned and talked to each other when they saw me really see them. I guess that doesn't happen often. One started to turn away and they all left, I don't think they meant to "disturb" me. I mentally thought "out loud"- "no worries." and went back to sleep. Spirits checking me out has been the very least worrying event in my life. On a scale of 1-100, low to high, it rates a 10. Next day I look up state parks and head over to Lao Valley. All I knew was that it was a state park. On the way I stop to get some lunch. I see a cute shop and I stop in. I see some crystals and think "she's probably safe to ask." and I ease in to a safe conversation lol then shyly ask if it's just me or are there spooky areas here? Her eyes get big and she gets excited. "Hmmm. Yeah. Why?" I explain the mountain hikers, the early morning visitors, and that I was headed over - gestures- in that area. She said, that's Lao Valley. There was a big battle there long ago... We had a nice chat and I felt she had a guardian entity. I had other interesting phenomena while visiting. You definitely have more than just spirits there. When I returned home my house spirits were on red alert for a moment. The shop ladies guardian sent someone with me to make sure I made it home. Maui has a bunch of spirits. Be sure to eat dinner at the General Store. It's amazing. Mysteries of Hawaii, you can retell this if you like.

@@liloasulunga1849 a canoe bashing stone was used by warriors at sea to destroy their enemy's canoes. A heavy stone, wrapped with a long rope-line that would be flung at the canoe. Herb Kane did a painting of this scene if you want to Google it for a better idea of how it looked in use. I have my own "Ghost story" about one if these stones. Was wondering if and how any other stories of them might be known.
I to have personal history of this area. Shortly after the first time I set foot on the emerald Island. I meet a Maui ian. Rod became the first Kumu I had privileged to discover the Maui not in western books. I lived by trail O and 1. Spent much time at the river above the old mac nut farm, found a few of the old worker camps that carved the rock and made flumes to take wai to other places for the plantations. Even seen these the cave, high up on the sheer cliffs where water flowed and no dry land to walk on. We had to trek on water plants and knew the weather was in our favor. For when it rained the waters would rise considerably and come fast. Not the place to be when it does. There where times when I was rebuilding the inlet at the river that was made to move water to the land I as a care giver on. I at times felt i was being watched. There where times to, the jungle sounds would go silent and still, creepy still. The birds sometime would suddenly scatter, as if they saw danger. I never did hear any drumming. There was one night I and others thought we saw the flickering of touches. They where progressing down from the mountains. Then they just vanished. The person I brought to Maui was down near La Perouse Maui at a cove near Oprahs private road. We both heard at night on several occasions drum beat and marching sounds. We both were ready to strip naked and lay flat with face in the ground if these sounds got near. It was odd. They seem to get louder and then faded into the returning jungle noises. @Lopaka for making this video. You told the tale just as Rod told me 20yrs ago. I also have deeply considered; had not the off islanders help the Big Island King conquer Maui. With gunpowder, cannons, muskets. What would Maui be like today and the other islands too.
It wasnt the 'haunted' that got my attn it was 'Iao'. Very similar kupu to Io in te reo maori, very tapu like your story not many entered into the whare wananga of Io back in the ra.(days).

If you're from Maui, you know about the gravity tree in Iao
Used to be fun during high school to put the vehicle in neutral and start rolling. However it’s an optical illusion, and we’re actually parked on a 1 to 3 degree angle. The surrounding area and trees gives us the impression that the road is flat or is uphill. But it’s nothing that can’t be debunked. If you lay down and look in any direction, you’ll see that it’s not flat. Or bring a level or laser level, and you’ll see that it’s the commonly known phenomenon (Gravity Hill). After the 5th time at night with friends, I had to figure out how we’re moving, because at that time it was “ Menehune “ pushing us. The powder I put on the road and on the back of my vehicle had no prints, that one of my friends had claimed that it was the reason why we moved.

Got any stories about Canoe Bashing Stones?
Can you explain I’ve never heard of it please.
Would you be interested in taking me to some of these locations and collaborating on a video? I live on Oahu
When the river ran red…
❤
It wasnt the 'haunted' that got my attn it was 'Iao'. Very similar kupu to Io in te reo maori, very tapu like your story not many entered into the whare wananga of Io back in the ra.(days).

I've seen the real sh!t in Hanawana on a few occasions.
That’s why they think Hawaiians can’t govern themselves by believing in ghosts!
Its ALL Ultimately Demonic. My belief.
