  • www.autobytel.com/car-ownership/ Understanding the letters and numbers on your tire sidewall can be a bit confusing. Tak from Toyo Tires gives us some insight on how to read a tire size. His simple explanation addresses all the different specifications that are written on your vehicles tire. The sidewall of a tire contains a couple of key features:
    Let's Take a Look for Instance at this Tire Size 255/35/R18 109V
    The "255" in the first part of the tire size represents the section width of the tire. The "35" represents the tires aspect ratio or height. The "R" stand for Radial in tire construction and the "18" stands for the wheel diameter in inches. The "109" is the load index and represents the tires maximum load capacity at maximum inflation pressure. The "V" represents the speed rating which is the max allotted speed of a tire.
    For those looking to get some advance knowledge about all the information a tire can present there is the DOT tire identification number (TIN).
    An example of a TIN would be DOT CX91 XX31309
    The "CX" represents the factory code or where the tire was manufactured. The "91" represents the size code. The "XX3" represents the options code. The last four digits on the TIN represent the week and year when the tire was made. So for instance "1309" means the 13th week in the year 2009.
    Another bit of information contained on a tire sidewall is the maximum load capacity. The max load displays a weight at a certain PSI. But this is not the recommended tire pressure that you should inflate your tires to. Instead follow the manufacturer recommended tire pressure setting as seen on the inside of a car's door jam.
    Hopefully this video can give you some insight on how to read a car tire.

    M+S is a Snow tire with a "Mud shedding" pattern, it stops mud from packing into the tread in theory. M+T is the same thing only a all season all terrain tire. AKA "on road/off road" tire. If you drive a M+S in the summer it will be ruined in no time. They have a softer compound that works in snow really good. In PA a lot of my family have 2 sets of tires/rims, 1 just for winter and one for the rest of the year. The M+T would be a good all season tire, that again in theory would shed mud.

    • @gofigure84
      @gofigure84 2 роки тому

      There is a listing for the thickness of the side wall. It is the ply listing. Ply or sections determines thickness. The only time it matters is on trucks. Regular tires are 8 ply. When thicker is needed for towing and payload weight you go up as needed. 10, 12, 14 and so forth.
      Yes you can use a 55 instead of a 60 but it will be a little shorter.

    • @gofigure84
      @gofigure84 2 роки тому

      Aftermarket tires? You mean wheels? If you go with a skinny low profile tire on a street set up you want to run 40+ for the pressure. This is to give the tire less give on bumps to keep from damaging the wheel. Otherwise follow the manufacturer spec in the driver door jam for tire pressure

      I'm trying to understand what you said about the 303, though. So it protects the engine and collects all this dust, etc, on its surface, gunk just sticks to it bc it's viscous or smthg but the stuff doesn't get into the parts? And then you rinse it all off and leave it for 6 months and the engine is shiny and nice? So you rinse it and then it still stays sort of protected?
      I see why you you'd let it dry first before spraying smthg oily on it, as that would seal in the water and cause rust. Well, sorry that was solong and unimportant

      @@cockeyedoptimista It's water based as no doubt why it gets absorbed so well . Surface dirt wouldn't be an issue , just that I like the engine to be " clean " . And applying it two times per year to soak in has no bad effect . I don't expect it has much of an effect on metal . Though there are sprays for the engine to kepp it shiny and " protected " after cleaning . And since I have an open air intake , I stuff it with a small microfiber towel to keep water out as I power wash it . UA-cam channel " Sweet Project Cars " talks about using 303 Protectant , more extensively .

    OK!! I have been checking the date codes on tires for years (since 60 minutes did d story on it over 20 years ago). I can clearly see the date code on two of my tires. It is just like it is stated here. Those tires also say "MADE IN INDONESIA". The tire code is a 4 digit number (within a box) next to the other numbers on the DOT code. The other two tires say, "MADE IN CHINA". The DOT code starts out like the other tires but there is no box or other numbers that LQQK like this date code. I have LQQKED over and over and can't find any code that resembles any of the ones found here. Anyone know about the date code on tires made in China?

      I called the Dealer I bought the tires from (national, reputable company that starts with an "F" ends with an "E") and I got my answer. He told me that the DOT date code was on the other side of the tire. Nevertheless, he said they always put the DOT code, complete with the date code, on the receipt. I checked and, yes, the DOT code for all 4 tires were actually on the receipt. The two tires manufactured in Indonesia's DOT was a little longer than the other two tires but they all ended with the date code. All 4 tires were manufactured in 2016 so I am good with that.

      Your speedo will read slightly slower than your actual speed - not a big deal, just something to be aware of
      You'll be adding slightly more unsprung weight - again, not a big deal as it wont be much but it could effect handling and braking
      as the tyre circumference will be slightly larger you'll essentially be gearing up slightly so you'll use more fuel in stop-go traffic and your acceleration (if your care about that) will be slower but as the tyre will have to spin fewer times to cover the same distance you'll use less fuel on motorways and have a higher top speed - again, it's a small change so wont effect things too much
      be aware of your scrub radius as changing that too much can effect handling too
      have a look on this site to get a rough idea of how it'll effect things www.wheel-size.com/calc/

      Question for you, cause I'm having problems with these new tires I got. I'm getting the shaking in the front of the car, which I never got with the previous tires I had on the car.
      So Saturday I had the mechanic put on the Bridgestone El400-2 tires in the front. They're 215 60 R16 94v on the front. For the rear he put on these Pirelli P7 216 60 R16-95h. The car recommends 95h.
      I also got a car inspection that day. When I'm driving on the highway with the new tires, I noticed there's a shaking in the front, especially when I'm going over 60 miles an hour, like 65 and 70 miles an hour. There's even a shaking on the steering wheel.
      I didn't get this with the previous tires I had. With my previous tires I had different brands on the front and back. I'd had Sumitimo on the front and BF Goodrich on the back. Both tires were 95h which is what the car recommends.
      What do you think this shaking is from. Do you think the Bridgestone 94v is doing that, or maybe the Bridgestones are defective tires.
      I'm thinking maybe I should rotate the tires and put the Pirellis on the front and put the Bridgestones in the back.
      Would that help with stop the shaking in the front. Or should I just get two new tires to replace the Bridgestone and have tires rated at the 95h, which is what the car wants.
      I bought the Bridgestones and Pirelli tires on eBay. I bought them from two different people. I bought the Bridgestone from one person and I bought the Pirelli from another person. Both have great ratings on eBay.

      255 inches is 21 feet. i'm only 6 feet. So 255 inches for a sidewall tire is one big tire. Sidewall is millimeters not inches.

So two 60 series tires will be different heights if the first number is different in both tires. For example 255/60 vs 285/60. The 285 will be taller even though they are both 60 series tires.

    Example; “Color”, you need the right color so it’ll work! Ok, what is the correct color? But if there is a color chart to reference by then yes it’s a no brainer.
