    8:00 Dunning Kruger effect is indeed when someone has so little knowledge or competence they blindly overestimate their ability or assert confidence in a subject (e.g. "Tide goes in, tide goes out. You can't explain that.") You were thinking of the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, a cognitive bias where one notices something more frequently after learning of it.

      @@MoonGuardian866 Exactly. I've forgotten the name of BMP myself often enough I wouldn't claim expertise in anything to do with psychology.

    I can see where you’re coming from wander, with wanting the games industry to slow down due to your position as a game review channel, but personally I don’t want it to slow down. Everyone has their niche of games that they like, and the more games that come out, the more likely everyone is to find a new game they like. Also, at some point you just have to come to terms with the fact that there is just not enough time for a single person to review every game, or even every game in a genre, let alone play and complete them all.

      AAA studios should definitely slow down (and treat their employees right while they’re at it), but otherwise I agree.

    This type of voice modulation was used in FAITH, which is a New Blood published horror title in the style of like, Amiga or Commodore games? Like, very basic, simplistic sprites and shapes, scanlines, etc. But also with rotoscoped cutscenes!

    • @nicklausdavis
      @nicklausdavis 11 місяців тому +2

      Yeah faith was the one that came to mind, but I could swear that it was used in a bunch of old old games as well that I can’t think of the names.

      Most people these days will recognise it from Faith: the unholy trilogy.
      An indie horror that aims for an Atari style aesthetic, with occasional rotoscoped cutscenes.

  • @kinghoodofmousekind2906
    @kinghoodofmousekind2906 10 місяців тому +1

    The game uses the same text-to-voice program of FAITH, innit? Whenever you pick an upgrade or perk, all I can hear is "A gun with one bullet."
    At 07:33 even Wanderbots asks that question, anyone can confirm this?
    08:25 that's the effect of perceived mastery, iirc. That you trick yourself, when you start to study a subject, into thinking you know a lot more than you actually know. But I could be wrong.

    The dollar-per-hour is just a very rough "estimation of worth". Games can subjectively hold more value depending on what the recipient(player) enjoys. Genre, story, mechanics, graphics. All are factors that can influence worth.
    Then there is "precedence" that other titles of similar games have established. Sometimes even within the same franchise. If a similar game is 20% cheaper, but far worse in terms of longevity(amount of good content), it is much harder to vouche for it when compared to a previous, superior experience.
    But still, knowing if a $60 title is a 10 hour, 20 hour or 100+ hour experience, in combination with what you can learn about gameplay from reviews, goes a long way to help people determine if it is "worth it".

    I know what you mean about the voice effect being very nostalgic, but not being quite able to place it. For some reason it makes me think of Star Fox, but I don't think that's quite right.
    Also, yeah, this game really needs to develop an answer for why you should care about burn or knockback, when dead is the best status effect and lasers and ballistics are WAY better at applying it.

    I don't remember any nes games using any voices like that. But maybe arcade games. Specifically pinball games.

    glad to see you are taking care of yourself, I guess the "might sit down and play it too long" is why you haven't finished "Astrea, the six sided oracle" yet? or have I just missed the last episode release? it wouldn't surprise me at all since I really don't have the time to watch all the episodes you release.

    The caveman SNES game you mentioned *might* be Joe & Mac! It was one of my favorites growing up. Decently difficult even as an adult! It is currently on the SNES emulator that you get with Nintendo Online on the switch if you happen to be curious!

    Halls of Torment has some of the best stacking DoT effects if you go with fire, you can really burn down big HP sponges super fast, but you don't get to have the instant-wipe attacks that just delete lesser enemies.

    I always find it interesting when people complain about the cost of video games. If you pay $60 for a game that you play for 6 hours it's the same as paying $20 to see a 2 hour movie at the theater. If you put anymore time into that game it's even less per hour. Lot's of RPGs can end up costing only pennies per hour depending on how much you play them. Biggest difference is that you see the movie once but can play the game as much as you want.

    I can think of no reason the game industry ought to slow. Accept there is simply no way to cover most. You make your own rules as to covering. Acknowledge the inherent limitations thereof. Cover what you cover and let the rest of us enjoy the massive amount out here. limit all of us to please you? Nah. Ths only rules to what you do are those which you place on yourself. Look at the flipside of it and go with the benefits to you. Not the downside.
