Coincidentally, Ian (Forgotten Weapons) released a video today on a revolver that was just awarded a Union contract, in late 1864. Those 5000 units, were delivered, but never issued and stored until sold off in the early 1900s.

I was a huge fan of Forgotten Weapons until I found out that I'd been shadow banned (being blocked on youtube is essentially that in the sense that you are not told it's happened, are still able to leave comments, but you're just typing to yourself because nobody else can see them) and I have absolutely no idea why. The most "negative" comments I leave are ones attempting to correct things I believe to be wrong, and I always try to be as decent as possible. But then again, after watching for like four years it's not impossible I've left a dickish comment at some point. It's still a harsh and cowardly solution response (I believe it's permanent btw) to rare unpleasant comments though.
Considering that nobody actually gets told this has happened to them, it might be worth while leaving a comment on one of his vids, then going into an incognito tab to look at the newest comments to see if it pops up. Just saying this so people know they might be completely wasting their time leaving comments, and they should probably be very careful with certain channels. Thanks for watching my ted talk.
Edit: I should also add that this *could* be UA-cam automation, and might have nothing to do with Ian. It's kind of depressing that this is a possibility lol.

And on the topic of Forgotten Weapons, I've certainly criticised some of Ian's videos in quite harsh words in the past, and I do believe that it was well deserved, but to Ian's credit I've never seen this sort of reaction from him, in fact, he took some corrections quite fondly. I tend to believe that what you're describing is more of a UA-cam algorithm shenanigans, being that the site is being basically run by bots at an alarmingly increasing rate, from what little I've heard.
@@F1ghteR41 I was really surprised that Ian would do that - but I also suspect that most people don't consider quite how dramatic a thing it actually is to block someone as they don't have to see the depressing results of it lol. I suppose it's also possible that other people have "moderator privileges" - or, of course, this could be a UA-cam bot moderation. Like maybe if enough people report your comments, you just get auto banned from a channel. It's a mystery lol because youtube tells us *nothing*

I love that Jonathan Watches C and Rsenal, probably for work purposes but the idea that he works for hours with guns and then goes home and watches videos about guns is top drawer
The pistol is cool but woah, that sword is beautiful! Alas, I have a monthly "fun" budget of about 200$ CAD, and I've currently spent about 300$ for October, so I shall have to exert some will power. But I love it!
The stock for the Hammond feels like it's trying to lean into the Winchester "have a carbine and a pistol that use the same ammunition" territory.

Your description of it was unassailable, but for only one thing... it's actually a 14th century sword (at least according to the museum that you work for), not 13th as you stated.😁 By the way, if you haven't done a video about it yet, it would be awesome to see you cover the adorable little Smith & Wesson 1858 Model 1 revolver in .22 short! One website which lists the sword, states it is a replica of a sword dating from 1275 to 1325, so late 13th / early 14th century, so both are correct.

I think this is a really neat action and would be a lot less bother to load and use than a cap and ball revolver, even if using paper cartridges in the latter.
Tthe Rollin White U.S, patent on bored through revolver cylinders seems to have expired around 1870.
After that, there would have been a flood of decent cartridge revolvers onto the U.S. market. Meanwhile in Europe, Lefaucheux had already invented the bored through revolver cylinder and the pin fire cartridge in 1854, so mutli-shot metallic cartridge pistols would have been readily available anyway.

The breech block locking catch is almost certainly not knurled, but possibly filed by a careful hand. Knurling is a machine process, done on a metalworking lathe to create the diamond pattern on a cylindrical surface.
The knurling tool has a pair of hardened steel rollers with the diamond pattern on the surface of the rollers. The rollers are forced onto the rotating cylindrical surface of the workpiece and mould the diamond pattern onto the workpiece.
I did query myself on this in the edit, believe it or not. I didn't ask them to edit it because the word is much older than the machine process. But you're right, it's not usual to use it for hand work like this. The joys of recording without a script :)
Do you know if the process you described is the one used to make litho ink metering rollers?
They are uniform whereas gravure rollers are not.
It would be classed as chequering, in real terms. Although the Word Knurled is a bastardisation of the word Knarled and is even older than that. Knurling is a process of adding single or diamond patterned surface , for decoration or grip, the rollers came later so it isn't incorrect, just that the engineering term has superceded the original form.
knurling isn't the process but the finish, it can be achieved on a flat surfaces.
In regard to the long barreled version, I have a Beretta 950. These things are considered vest pocket pistols and are usually found with a barrel length of about 2.25 inches. Mine has a barrel length of about 3.75 inches. Kind of defeats the vest pocket carry idea. It is also chambered in 22 short which leads me to believe it was intended for target shooting.

Gutta Percha is a polymer, just a natural one. Gutta Percha is the trans polymer of poly isoprene, whereas rubber is the cis polymer.

Great presentation. I especially liked your reading of the ad. That was hilarious now, but could hardly be less so even then. It seems to argue that the round is so powerful that it will require no aim because it's a hand-held single shot weapon of mass destruction. It's the same argument you get from 1911 guys.

Flying out to the UK and staying in Sheffield for a couple of weeks. To my delight I found out the Royal Armouries Museum isn't far in Leeds definitely going to check out the exhibits.
Go drinking in the Brampton region of Chesterfield instead of Sheffield. Far safer. Over the border into Derbyshire.

Between FW, C&Rsenal, and Scholagladiatoria at the end, all of my historical weapons channels are slowly converging.

From what I recall , this is indeed the case in several of the British musea, and might very well be a mandated standard practice in the UK.

15:09 It seems pretty natural to me: it is a single-shot pistol with decent sights and quick and easy loading procedure, it would be very much at home on American pistol shooting competition grounds of its day. It can be likened to the Colt Camp Perry of the twentieth century; that is, if one could ignore the use of the non-Hammond-approved .22LR chambering of the latter. 😉

When the American Civil War ended many manufacturers of firearms and ammunition went bankrupt, unless they were able to sell their products overseas, especially if they had upgraded to
self contained metallic cartridges. The Remington Rolling Block is a good example.

In rifle form I wonder if it could have competed with the Remington rolling block. Less strong without a top strap for sure, but pretty quick to operate.
The Rolling block also does not have a top strap but ought to be a much stiffer action than the Hammond, because the latter has quite an offset between the bore axis and the lower part of the frame, from where the breech block is pivoted.
But, of the two, I think the Hammond is the better choice for a pocket pistol, because there is no breach operating arm sticking out on the right hand side of the breech.
Remington also made the Rolling block pistol which was used primarily for target work (especially when the .44 Russian cartridge came out.)
@@unclebrat Indeed they did. I used to own an Uberti replica Remington Rolling Block in .357 magnum. It may well have been the most accurate centerfire pistol I ever owned. I did get my best ever slow fire score while using it. It was, of course, no good for rapid fire events, in which I found my S&W Model 14 seemed to shoot as well as anything else that I either owned or managed to borrow.

In the second patent shown from about 6:06 the top view seems to specify a very strongly narrowing barrel.
I am not a gun person, am I interpreting that correctly or is it just the way it is drawn?

The Deringer guns spelled with two r's are people trying to get around Henry Deringers patents. Henry Deringer was quite the prolific gunmaker. He made Indian trade rifles and copies of the British Northwest gun all before the war of eighteen twelve. Up the eighteen thirtys when he made pistols for the tribe sent to Oklahoma. He made sporting rifles in the style of Philadelphia pattern Longrifles. And of course the pocket pistol that bears his name and the styles of pocket pistols that he had nothing to do with that for some reason also bear his name as shorthand for pocket pistol.
As a flintlock and percussion lock firearm maker, the first pistol I ever made was a copy of the pistols ordered for the Choctaw nation scouts. A quasi police force attached to the Choctaw nation. It was a larger version of his pocket pistols with a twelve inch barrel, though some had been shortened to ten inches.
The action for a single shot military rifle or target pistol it is ok but but for a hold out gun I want more than one shot.

A bit of speculation here, but I wonder if the manufacturer went bankrupt because after the civil war there were a lot of cheap revolvers around, so why buy a single shot pistol ? Also, given its size, smallish grip, and heavy calibre, might it have been somewhat unpleasant to shoot ?
Could it be Hammond's term of enlistment in the US Army had expired and he didn't reenlist?
I am not sure the jabs were at Colt, but instead Smith & Wesson. They were the ones with the rimfire pocket pistol at the time. Colts did not have cartiges until 1871 I believe. This would have been better than the S&W 22.

Yeah, I was thinking that myself. Talking this much about the name Hammond, it is not the easiest thing to avoid thinking about Richard, or even Top Gear, given that their phraseology overlaps. I think that is also why Ferguson was smirking at times, or holding back a laugh or two.
The Colt derringer that I can understand. Unfortunately many a great design has failed mainly because creators of new firearms are terrible at production, sales or marketing.
Palaquium gutta, the Gutta Percha tree produced Gutta Percha. Sumatra. The trees themselves are close to extinction due to overharvesting.
