- a good original piece by a jazz group trio of teens-The Craig Hundley Trio became a sensation in the 1960s, especially after an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. The trio consisted of Craig Hundley on piano, Stuffy McKinney on bass, and Gary Chase on drums. This track is off their debut lp"arrival of a young giant" enjoy!
This kid and his group were marvelous. Saw Craig in an episode of Gunsmoke from 1966 and he was great then, but here in 68 at 14 he's unbelievable!!!!!
I have this album somewhere in my collection! They were excellent especially considering their age.
my very first LP! after seeing him on Johnny Carson I bought this and have been a jazz lover ever since. x
Reading Marc Cushmans book about Star Trek season 3 brought me here. Two things I can’t live without- Star Trek and jazz. All these years I knew him as Kirk’s nephew and Tommy Starnes, had no idea he was a jazz prodigy.
I watched Showcase 68 all summer in '68. I pulled for the Trio. My dad pulled for Sly and the Family Stone. They tied for first and both got record contracts.
wow..... That's amazing how they were teenagers when they recorded that..... I wish that I was as good as them
Had a brief chat with Craig at a cinema in Westwood in early 70s. Nice guy.
The bassist is J.J. Wiggins.
id love to see the Carson performance. found this record for 2 bucks yesterday.
If it hasn't been done already, this material should be repackaged and released again..it's great music, plus maybe a reunion Cd would be cool like a 50 year anniversary one.
i had the other album. Excellent disc.
He was on BEWITCHED and star trek~
I saw their performance on Johnny Carson. Dig the Nerhu jacket and medallion. Peace.
Wiggins had to stand on a chair to play bass at ten.
Just found a copy in the $1 bin at a record shop. Yeah!!
They did two albums. I have both.
I played cuts from this album on my first job in radio. Whatever happened to these kids?
I have the LP on Amazon if anyone is interested in buying the whole album.
I see that JJ Wiggins has changed his name since then, I saw them perform live at a club, but seems as Craig Hundley and Gary Chase fell off the radar..what would be cool is a Reunion album..
i think craig hundley is craig huxley...who still has a studio and new age labels and did a lot of work scoring, etc.
Yes I seen him and his Daughter's page
That is true, he changed his name.
I call these guys 'jazz nerds", though that word did not exist. And is only a goof...Because What they really were was sharp, and brilliantly gifted. I saw them on the Mike Douglas show. Was Craig related to Ellie Frankel, who I think played on the show as Mike Douglas'
'house band"..??
Not related. Source: I'm his nephew.
Sheesh, Craig Hundley Had An IQ Of 184
Just watching Star Trek. Craig runs like a girl.
