Let’s just be honest Genshin purposely and obviously ripped off a lot of breath of the wild’s game mechanics on a level somewhere between „taking inspiration“ and straight up coping but that’s not necessary a bad thing. We see stuff like this a lot in the game world and sometimes there so many games that do this that it’s becoming an hole game genre like Souls like from dark souls or Metroidvania from Metroid. That’s a very normal evolvement of games. Hoyo is a company that likes to play save and don’t take a lot of risk what we see over and over again. As you said yourself all of genshins nations are heavily based on already existing cultures and most of it’s Story is very close to different existing folklore of various cultures too. That’s certainly not the most unique or creative way to design a game but still doesn’t mean that it is a bad game. It clearly isn’t perfect but also has to be a good game otherwise it would had so much success and such a big player base. I personally think that a lot of people like that it isn’t that unique because it feels familiar to them.

One thing I’d like to say about the semuru drama I’m an arab and can confirm that hoyo does its homework when it comes to researching history and culture .The desert region is so rich with Arab history and mythology it is amazing to see. Also a lot of media represent us in bad light often, as barbarians or backward thinking or not developed enough. So it’s so refreshing to see a region partially inspired by my home be shown as such a strong and rich one

Candace was reference to kandake a nubian queen who was dark skin. there are plenty of npcs and characters such as nahida and dori who are influenced by south asian deities yet their skin looks like their emitting light lmao. south asians are varying degrees of brown with very visible melanin.

@@ives6622 apparently there's either a single hacker or a bug in the game that lets people delete some items from your world permanently, like imagine someone comes into your world and any entity is just gone, forever. I heard it could be technically used to remove anemoculi, statues of the seven and i even heard it could remove domains but idk if that was 100% a joke or if it was based in reality. Anyways, don't accept CO-OP requests for the time being, ESPECIALLY if you're in the CN server since this thing has only been recorded on there. Stay safe and don't use kaveh to not possibly permanently remove the emblem domain from your game.
I was there and the anniversary backlash actually scared other gacha game companys a lot. I played cookie run kingdom and all of a sudden they just started flooding our mail box with crazy gifts for a week. It was incredibly sudden and the reason thet were giving it out was they were thankful for players playing the game.

as an Iranian genshin player they did a pretty good job on adapting names and stories from Iranian culture. for example do you remember Nilou's dance? it really means for us because it kinda represents our woman life freedom revolution. many players like me can relate to this topic because we can't even perform a dance in public. also there was so many occasions where some of our cultural celebration were mentioned in the samsara archon quest. but about colourism, I should say there are many different skin tones at least in Iran. we have white, neutral tones And browner, darker ones. I think Mihoyo could have done better about this concept. I wished to see more variety in skin tones in Sumeru because it has to represent the middle east , India and North Africa. in general i am so greatful that they consider our culture so much. sumeru region really feels like home to me. from the forest to the desert. this is how it should be in reality. in peace, without any war or conflict.
This- litterally just made me cry, I dont even know if in a good or bad way. As Sumeru was the first region for me that really felt alive and gave me the experience back, that I got when I first started genshin on the release day. I'm from middle Europe, so I dont have the same background as u do and I cant say if genshin represents something good or bad in sumeru. But just the fact that there is someone that says sumeru feels like home makes me cry, bc I saw nothing but hate for this wonderful nation.

And soon after I realized how much more is in there and I would never be more gretaful to Genshin get me know this world. It is so sad that in our real world Middle East is in war and religious difference problems. But it is really wierd to me how nobody talk about how there isn't anybody with at least a slightly wavey, curly hair. I know the skin color issue but everyone talks about it so why would I do? While hoyo does fail to get things right I am forever very impressed with how theyve handled the VAs situations from quickly (in the scheme of development and casting etc etc) replacing Tighnari's voice lines to assisting the VAs regarding the situation with the dubbing studio witholding months of pay

I remember when the anniversary happened. It was what I would call an absolute chaos pile of silly confusion. I also remember how the fandom turned Qiqi into an icon of rebellion by editing the anniversary rewards onto Qiqi to make a sort of funny god creature. That was funny.

Being a fan of both Sonic and Genshin during the game awards debacle was weird because while the two fandoms were just duking it out I was just mad that both games got totally snubbed for the soundtrack category. Edit: Also while this was going on, the head writer of Sonic Frontiers was talking about how hyped he was for the next Genshin update on his podcast, which was kinda funny
do note that excluding ongoing/online and player's voice, Genshin is ineligible for other categories since it's a 2020 game. which is very unfortunate hopefully Star Rail avenges it this 2023, it started strong unlike Genshin.

when it comes to the sumeru drama, as a north african person i really felt that for once at least when it came to our culture it really got the respect that it deserved because i could recognize actually a lot of things in the game such as dishes or references. but when it comes to representation, i think that they should have done better because even if there are actually more « light skinned » arab people (like me lol) that people believe according to stereotypes, brown people EXIST too and also not only one shade of brown exists? like the colors of our skins are all different and thats actually beautiful. so yeah we would love more representation and diversity in this game, even if hoyo didnt fall into the cliché trap, the fact that i got to feel respect while others didn’t when we share the same culture is actually upsetting.

Yes I absolutely love this response and completely agree. I'm more on the south asian side of the spectrum and it was fantastic seeing things that I was recognizing in terms of foods and places or running around the city thinking "hey that's my uncle's name" but they could definitely have more diversity. We want more diversity and it's such a small thing to go shades more on a 3d model so it frustrates me that it's not there. But again, I am glad that there were a lot of cultural things they did right and I love seeing something of my culture in a popular game, i didn't realize how happy it'd make me

The anniversary award was wild The Qiqi fallen spamming The Mihoyo products review spamming Then attacking other apps like Google classroom for no reason. I understand the player outrage with this one since other Mihoyo games had more generous rewards than the initial offerring (what they ended up giving away was actually a paid package). I am also salty about this because HSR literally has given away more freebies than Genshin at this point.
The majority of the review bombers weren't even genshin players. They were genshin haters who wanted to make the genshin fandom look bad after a gaming news site blew up an article over like 5 people giving bad reviews on genshin.

Re Sumeru, coming from the perspective of a Bangladeshi-Malaysian: 1. Sumeru's culture seemed to be based on the migration history of Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism - a lot of which converged arcross South/South East Asia, with some crossover in the Middle East. A fair number of the NPC names were VERY Malay (Effendi, Maimunah) and Malaysia was one of those meeting points - makes sense, since Hoyoverse does have a Singapore office & they're right next door. This is likely why it seems like a mishmash - a lot of Middle East & South/South East Asian countries would share influences based on religion & migration. 2. It's interesting to think about how pre-release, people were like "omg they made the good guys [Akademiya] white and the bad guys [Eremites] brown!". And then the Archon Quests happen and it turns out the Akademiya is a fully corrupt institution, and the Eremites were largely manipulated by the Akademiya & had good points! Probably the only reason we don't fight the Akademiya as enemies is because you could knock most of them over with a feather.
Actually completely wrong lmao. Sumeru is mostly Iran and India with an Egyptian and Maghrebi focus in the desert and even then the last desert expansion was all persian. The religions it takes after are Zoroastrianism, hinduism, and buddhism with almost no actual relations to Islam. Many npcs have Persian and arabic names with some having south asian names. (effendi is a turkish title btw)
Btw, most of the Malay names are Arabic because Malays are muslims. There's some names like Orkid or Melati (flower names in Malay) or Tuah or Jebat (Malay warrior names) but yeah, the rest are mostly Arabic names.

With the Eula controversy, people like her should be 100% forgiven for her family's past actions. She can't control what her family did. They've been doing that long before she was even born. Honestly I think how genshin handled tighnari's VA should be the standard and it's sad that they're the only company I can think of that drops the employee as quickly as possible and doesn't keep the whole thing under wraps or let them off easy or anything- I'm pretty sure the same thing happened with oz's CN VA. I appreciate they have a consistent, appropriate response to this kind of thing.
I don’t know if you heard about this debacle since you’re not interested about meta. But there was the Yae drama on her power level. Now this one needs a lot of context: Yae Miko was hyped up to the heavens ! people were waiting for her to drop, Raiden brought a little hope on the people that Electro wasn’t that bad of an element after all, Dendro wasn’t released. So she came out and… people were not happy ( who could i’ve guessed ), she was constantly compared to fischl, 90 cost burst, a weird passive with em when electro reactions weren’t a focus, her turrets targeting objects, no i-frames, long on-field time, people had a lot of complains. This lead to one of Hoyo weirdest and only (since Zhongli) attempt to change a characters after release: they made her turrets target the closest thing to you, which meant you could be fighting a hilichurl but all of your damage is going on the almighty powerful and indestructible campfire. They quickly remove that change a few days later The reason why i love this drama is because the fandom went full on conspiracy theory, people started saying that some characters kit were not the same as what they were supposed to be. And the remnants of their old kit were some artifacts sera that fits them aesthetically ( so yoimiya was supposed to work with Retracing Bolide and Yae with Shimenawa) Overall it wasn’t hateful and based on nothing like Kokomo’s kit. After some time people lived with it and Dendro appeased most people I talk way too much
The Yae Drama was also fueled because the change was made like right when 2.6 came out. Yae was no longer in banners and the „hits the closest” thing made c2, that many many people went for to make her better, completely useless
I remember this!!! My main team consisted primarily of Raiden, Yae, Zhongli, and Jean. I’m not really a meta player, so I was having lots of fun with that team and Yae (I still do!)
As an Indian person, if you look past the skintones of characters, Sumeru is one of the most accurate representations of my culture that I’ve seen. Do I wish there were people with darker skin tones that weren’t npcs? Yes, but hoyo definitely did their research and put enough time and care as much as they did with the other regions. And at the end of the day, seeing my culture and people represented in a game I love will always make me happy!
What a lot of people don’t get is that while to us in more western cultures dark skinned people are very common just as much as any other race but in places like china where the game is made it’s not common at all and a lot of people their are racist the fact that they have such good representation culturally is a shock to me honestly
as someone who's been an active player since 1.0, i remember A LOT of these and remember seeing them happening in real time. a lot of them were just fun to watch because wow people in this fandom can be ridiculous lol you explaining the Kokomi kit part reminded me of what happened when Kazuha was first leaked/released. pretty much everyone was saying how he was not worth it and was pretty much useless if you had Venti or Sucrose. that is, until later on after he was released and then everyone started begging for a rerun lol. it's time like these where i know that judging a character based on their leaks is pretty much useless because you never really know until their officially in the game
Bro I remember that one youtuber that was releasing several videos about possible changes Kokomi would bring into the game and how broken she could be. I remember feeling so hyped up for her first banner after watching them. She's my best healer in a way Zhongli's my best shielder. They are just what I need to make a team unstoppable.

While I also can't speak for people whose cultures are represented by Sumeru I would like to voice my appreciation of Hoyoverses portrayal of Mondstadt as someone from Germany I see it as incredibly refreshing to see other parts of my culture represented since most videogames like to single-mindedly represent any German inspired thing or character as either Ha ha fat beer drinking silly sounding man/woman or the second World War and while both of these are satirical or amusing it can get tiring so seeing Mondstadt rich with festivals and tradition is great
as someone who experienced the first anniversary drama, it was a whole roller coaster ride and a half. the funniest part was hyvrse slowly doubling back on the gifts, because the wings and the teapot set gifts that we got was intended to be part of the genshin anniversary concert merch bundle, but when the outrage broke out, they opt to give those “merch” as part of the anniversary gift as well lmao
I wanted to talk about the dehya drama a little bit more bcause boy my twitter was in shambles to me apart from having a bad kit the main reasons people were mad was because previous sumeru brown characters (candace/ cyno) did disappoint a lot of players gameplay wise so the drama got mixed up with all of sumeru colorism and racism stuff The other thing was that she was a standard character and that she was that bad. People felt that she was made to disappoint player when they lose her 50/50 and push them to spend ( which is very plausible to my opinion ) So yeah her kit honestly is very unique and refreshing amongst genshin characters but it’s really sad that her power is not on par with her originality ( her best team is Mono Pyro with Bennett Xiangling and Kazuha. And guess who is a better option ? Xinyan… a 4 star characters famously known to be a bad character ) (i made a second comment because making two in one was way too long in sorry 😭)
To add to the standard thing, they made her kit bad in the beta and even worse upon release. A lot of ppl were rlly upset about this and to top it off they made her a standard character, which was something that wasn't seen as common pre-Sumeru (which, with Tighnari it only made sense to make him standard because we needed a standard dendro character). The addition of Dehya to standard kinda implied to a lot of ppl that she wouldn't be further buffed AND incentivized a lot of ppl to pull for her because it's completely possible to lose all of your 50/50s ever and never get Dehya (personally I've been playing since 1.0 and I still don't have Keqing 💀) so it incentivized pulling for her because she would never get reruns afterwards. In a way this kinda implies that Hoyo wanted to make the most out of her release despite her performing rather poorly as a character, which is kinda scummy but on par for any gacha company 💀
Just pointing out- Cyno’s gameplay disappointment is largely due to being a selfish dps with not a lot of good supports (at time of release) rather than damage. People still complain about damage, but selfish dps’s always get the “man this character doesn’t do enough” treatment. Tldr: the displeasure at Cyno’s kit is largely a skill issue🤷♀️

I'd love a deep dive into the queer coding of genshin! I agree, as someone used to having to sift through hay to find needles of queerness in things I like, playing genshin has felt like sifting through hay and constantly finding full crowbars of queerness. Except I don't even have to really sift cause they're sticking half out of the piles on their own.

Here is something I would like to say for Sumeru. I think Sumeru’s desert is based off Egypt or Arabia, but I think Sumeru city is based off India. Hoyoverse really did their work on Sumeru. Such as adding dishes like: Biryani, Pani puri etc. And, the music sounds like it came out from an indian movie. It’s gorgeous to see a region based off my own. Oh- and also, the instruments used to make Sumeru’s music, is the same as regular indian music. So, yeah-
Sumeru city is heavily inspired from Persian culture, from the architecture to the characters hailing from the city such as Faruzan, Kaveh etc. Sumeru’s Indian culture is mostly in the Aranaras. The city is mostly Persian/Iranian with some Arabic influences. And the desert is Egyptian, (3.1)Arabic and Persian(3.4 and 3.6)
Akademiya is inspired by perisan (iranian ) culture and zoroastrian religion with 6 darshans name ps architecture characters and cloths the aranara era is inspired by India
Sumeru City has Persian influences the most. The Rainforest areas as well as the whole Vanarana, Aranaras and their names takes inspiration from Indian cultural/mythology
I was so excited for Sumeru since I'm Indian and thought it was weird when people online were upset with how Sumeru portrayed South Asia. It's a tropical area and a lot of parts of India are lush and green and unimaginably beautiful and it was weird to see people on twitter tell me my lived experiences weren't accurate LMAO.

Well just like at how gamers reacted to the news of a possible playable black samurai in the new Assassin's Creed game. Again. the POSSIBLE news of a black guy in fantasy Fuedal Japan Plus Sumeru was never actually supposed to just be the Middle East but fantasy. Saying it was is doing an absolutely HUGE disservice to both Hoyoverse who worked hard on it and the people who live there in real life. Plus if I recall correctly there's also a ton of Indian and African references in Sumeru yet no actual Indian inspired character besides maybe Nahida and Kaeya. I absolutely cannot blame Hoyoverse for that though. They probably do know most Indian people ahev dark brown skin and are doing everything in their power to avoid representing them like plague. WELL, okay, I'm Indian. South Indian, to be more precise. I still think that Sumeru could use more skin tone diversity, since it's inspired from SEVERAL cultures (who all have varying skin tones, including pale skin, yes). I also think the excuse that only desert people can be tanned falls apart when you look at any people living in rainforest/jungle biomes.

It pains me whenever even POC themselves brush away the colorism issue, claiming it's no big deal because they think only white twitter people are affected by it. Like, no? It feels like internal racism to me. It's fine to not be affected by the issue, but you still need to acknowledge that it IS an issue. It's *not* normal that in the three years Genshin has been out, there are just three or four tan characters (and zero dark skinned characters).
On note of the colorism in genshin, versus the Dehya Debacle. I think it is very important to note and hold genshin accountable on the counts for the playability of the characters, their tier-listing/power capabilities versus their skin color. Of all five (5) characters with melanin, only 2 are five stars, and only one of them is even considered a 'decent' character. None of them are considered 'meta' and 1 of the five stars plays worse than some of the 4 stars at c6. I am a huge Dehya stan as a character, but lets not act like Genshin's colorism is not tied directly this issue involving Dehya. It's not hard to connect, Candace is arguably better than Dehya. She's four-star. But I digress, it's obvious to me she was shelved and they won't fix her. The only other possibility being she is going to be buffed when they come out with Natlan. (the pyro universe) so, we'll see how they handle this and other PoC in the future. Especially considering the word "natlan" is Aztec for "The land of the nahuatl" So like. Please. Don't mess this up, hoyo.
Yeah, it would genuinely hurt if my favorite game messed up Natlan. They're already on thin ice for making a largely brown country in Teyvat be the land of pyro, of aggressive people according to basically everyone. I don't want them to make it worse. I want them to succeed. I genuinely want them to pay respects to the characters and to the cultures. And I want the characters to be cracked.
Honestly I was thinking the same thing, the fact her kit performs so poorly is SO odd considering she was a very very hyped character with a large fan base, a Pyro character which is one of the strongest elements in the game with some of the strongest elemental reactions, and for me, the fact every other character released for sumeru has performed just fine if not creating a whole new meta/playstyle. I absolutely love dehya and I do the best I can to make her work but it is really unfortunate how I can sink all my resources into a character, get her weapon, and she ends up performing worse than my rotting diluc if I don't apply buffs correctly for her. I will always still use her because she is gorgeous and one of my favorite characters from sumeru, but it's hard to look at it all piled up and not feel like there's some bit of colorism happening. I hope our girl gets a buff in a future update, even if it's slight.

Zhongli was never bad, he just didn’t have the astronomical damage output players were expecting because Hoyo didn’t make it clear in the marketing he’s largely a defensive support/control character. The buff he got was great, especially considering I made him my primary dps for a while even before then, but ultimately it was pretty unnecessary.
He was bad - Go back to videos or meta crafters from the time of his release, Zhongli was literaly outclassed by 4* untis in every category you ccould use him in.
Oh nonono, he was objectively bad prebuff his shield was weak as hell it was even worse than diona, you wont see him summon his pillar ever, and his NA are literally worse than xiangling's, he was without a doubt the worse 5* character during his time like it wasnt even close

I'm a guy who rolled for Dehya Day 1, despite being completely aware of how bad she is. This will be a long one. For the more casual players, I'll attempt to explain why people were so upset with Dehya's kit: So lets first look at her Elemental Skill, Motlen Inferno. It's a big AoE field similar to Albedo's. But unlike Albedo where it's on a short cooldown so it can be reapplied constantly, Dehya's field can only be applied twice on a massive 20 second cooldown. And the main use of the field is damage mitigation and interruption resistance. But shields already do this, and mostly on a lower cooldown too so she just ends up being inferior to every shielder in the game not named Xinyan (Xinyan's shield scaling and application is still bugged to this day but that's another discussion for another time) Even worse is that the field's duration isn't refreshed when reapplied via it's skill, only her Elemental Burst, which leads to... Her Elemental Burst having poor synergy with nearly all other Bursts and even most skills. Despite using Left Click (or whatever console players use) to speed up her attacks, they don't trigger any abilities that require "normal attacks". So she has no synergy with Yelan's burst. No synergy with Xingqiu's burst. No synergy with Beidou's burst, and so on and so forth. It's basically just damage, and it's not even good at that with her poor scaling. And then it also has a large energy cost of 70. Combined with her pathetic energy generation, she either needs a boatload of energy recharge or another Pyro/Favonius weapon character to battery her with lots of particles. So in most cases, you don't end up using it. They could have made her good, but they made her bad on purpose and they "sell you her solutions" through her Constellations. Just look at them. C1 fixes her scaling and lets her be more flexible in artifact stats. Her C2/C5 fixes the duration problem and damage problem. Her C4/C3 fix the energy issues and damage, and then her C6 further fixes her damage issue with additional crit rate and crit damage. But it's not like you can roll for her. You only had one chance to do that, and that time is long gone. So if you want to fix your Dehya, not only do you have to lose a 50/50, you have to lose it to Dehya as well, where she is competing with 6 other characters for that pity. It's even worse on the standard banner because weapons are included in that. So after looking at her kit, it's unfortunate that there isn't a single team in Genshin that uses Dehya that wouldn't be better off using another Pyro character that isn't Xinyan. She requires a lot of investment: she wants HP, and ATK, and Crit Stats, and lots of energy recharge if you plan on even using her Burst. And after all that investment, she has a below average showing for it prior to C4. You know what the craziest part about all this that I didn't even mention yet? Dehya, ironically enough, would have made a fantastic burgeon unit with some small tweaks here and there. But with how she is now, even if you give her full Elemental Mastery, Thoma is a better burgeon unit than her. What a tragic character and a tragic set of events that happened to her.
kinda disagree that thoma is better. I built both and thoma just takes too long to get his burst up and its so much easier to use dehya for burgeon. I’ve tried both in abyss before and dehya is def better when it comes to speed and efficiency.
Two additional dramas, Kazuha post 2.0 : after version 2.0 released with updated anemo reactions, Kazuha became one of the best and most desirable characters. This was also aggravated because he did not rerun for a whole year. Cue people being harassed and in some instances being sent death threats for having a bunch of pixels on a screen. Edit : pre 2.0 Kazuha was labeled as a bad unit and a 5* sucrose, which caused his first banner sale to tank as well. Scaramouche vs CN Male Players: a newly uncovered issue but one that has existed since Scaramouche’s first appearance, a very specific demographic of players vehemently hate and despise Scaramouche to the point of murdering cats in the name of Scarameow, finding the specific employees that worked on Scaramouche, attempting to murder one of Mihoyo’s CEO, harassing his VA (who also voices Aether!) and petitioned the government to have him removed which obviously failed.
I like how the government just went and played the game to say: "Naw, he fine, you stupid". I know this is no laughing matter, but this specific aspect of it just so hilarious to me.

As a Tighnari main, the Elliot situation was awful to hear about. The way he found his victims, especially when using other Genshin VAs like Alejandro to get closer to minors was sickening. My heart goes out to all of the victims. I had actually really liked the voice Gindi gave Tighnari, but tbh Zachary Gordon’s voice sounds wayyy better to me now. (In hindsight, the old voice sounded kinda off. idk.)
As a brown person from India, I don’t particularly mind the skin tone of the characters. I would definitely like more skin tones in game, but I won’t stop playing the game because of it. I start to get a little irritated though when people change a character’s skin tone and say they ‘fixed’ it. Like bestie, that’s literally being racist as well 💀💀 It’s so hypocritical it hurts; especially since most of the people doing it aren’t even from those countries represented by Sumeru. Plus I’m just happy my culture is being represented 🫶 color is the least of my worries

Its really easy to just stay away from toxic people. Avoid Twitter (no im not calling it X, dumb name) and you should be okay. For me im always on the wholesome side of genshin where people draw amazing fanart and stuff.

There was also the Anniversary Web event that contributed to the outrage. The front page of this web event showed that if you logged in daily, you’d have a chance to get a million primogems… after splitting the amount across other players of course. Sure, players knew that they wouldn’t actually get a million primogems, but most were hoping for a decent amount (maybe enough for a 10 pull). After all, the web event was pretty strict since if you missed more than 1 day, you’d get nothing. Plus it’s an anniversary event. So, after making extra sure to login daily to this event, people got… about 100 primogems (seriously, some people actually got less). It literally would’ve been better if this event never happened because it really did feel like a slap-on-the-face seeing that big million primogem number dwindle down to less than a single pull.
I took a break during Summeru, and I had no idea of the Gindi controversy. I did think Tignari sounded a bit different from what I remembered. Props to Mihoyo for changing the VA on the spot.

Yes 1.3 lantern rite had people complaining in the surveys so much because it was causing early burnouts. Mihoyo did fix it in 2.4 and had the playable characters interactable in the event itself.
Man, Genshin is a magnet for the drama, on some days I regret crawling out of my corner and interacting with people from this fandom, but some are great people. In 15:14, I agree that there is a disappointing lack of dark skinned people, but I do think it's a step in the right direction since a lot of kids also play Genshin and this may be their first introduction to such a rich and fascinating culture. Personally for me, I prefer well-written characters, even the characters I looovvvee to hate (dori) over a character that's only purpose is to be "the best because they're this [race] and from this [country]". Poorly explained I know but i've noticed this happening in waayyy to many shows. It's similar situation to how woman are often written in anime: even though there's a lack of woman and men are more focused in some shows, if the woman is such a well thought out character then I don't really care and pay close attention to " what her race should've been, her clothes should've looked like this yaddyyada" or how little female characters there are in the show. Or maybe I'm just content with anything. Edit: If anything, I consider it an achievement since, unlike the West, China itself isn't as exposed to other cultures in their own country unless they personally travel around. So the fact they were able to put so much effort into implementing all the cultures that inspired this region (including the other regions they've created) in the way that they did is a major step forward when it comes to representation and a sense of diversity in their country in a way that the majority can understand. So I think it should be praised rather than heavily criticized.
I see your point but there's no reason to not ask for both. It can be praised AND criticized for not going the little bit extra. In fact, it should. I'm sure you didn't mean it this way but it's not fair to imply that people should be happy with what they got and not critique the other glaring issues. Also you're right about China generally being closed off but we're talking about a global company whose team has spent a Significant Amount Of Time (years atp) researching these regions and their cultures and, by extension, their people. It's not unfair at this point to say that they should know better.
@@emsai3658 I understand that (ˊ˘ˋ*) I agree that it doesn't hurt to ask for more, I was stating that if I had to chose between a poorly written region and characters, over a well written region and characters (with some details missing on the side) then I'd choose the latter. I think the main reason as to why I'm content with Genshin is because I don't expect it to be perfect. Perhaps my expectations are low, but even for a big company I don't necessarily expect them to get everything accurately. I forgot where exactly I heard this (it was a movie interview I believe) but I remember this man saying something along the lines of, "A white man can write a movie about black culture and it's people just fine, but the only thing they'll be lacking is the "heart"". So the more I think about it, the more I'm not really surprised that hoyo missed a few details. And if all they missed was the skin colour of our beloved characters, then I'm not really the person to be critical about it unless people from those cultures say otherwise. And from what was said in the video as well as other commentators, there doesn't seem to be an issue. It obvious Hoyoverse puts a lot of love into genshin and their other games, so I doubt that they had any ill intentions. It's also their characters too, so I'm in more neutral position on the matter. There is still hope though, maybe we'll get some darker skinned characters when Natlan comes out ꉂ(ˊᗜˋ*)♡
I mean there are definitely dark skinned people in china though. Hoyoverse did a really good job researching different cultures, I myself seeing my own culture in Sumeru, but skin tones fluctuate in all parts of the world, even places without much immigrants and their own colorism in Liyue was grossly overlooked imo
What a lot of people don’t get is that while to us in more western cultures dark skinned people are very common just as much as any other race but in places like china where the game is made it’s not common at all and a lot of people their are racist the fact that they have such good representation culturally is a shock to me honestly
Also for the Resin system, aside from the measly 120 cap, back in the 1.0 version, every time limited events required resin to play those events (don't know how much resin needed). Players were quite upset with it, from what I know which then later in the next update, Hoyoverse/Mihoyo finally scrapped the Resin requirement when playing these events which kinda goes in place in the "Taking Accountability" tier.
Kokomi was my first 5 star so I got her without any bias. Despite being stuck at level 40 her healing and hydro application made me love her, I loved not dying.
What about Scara controversy? I mean, yeah, it happened only in China community, but it still was huge enough for people to notice, especially with all the cats that were killed in the process 😿
I as a long time gacha player really didn't see the issue with the anniversary, truth be told. Most gachas aren't as f2p friendly as Genshin Impact is, and I think people fail to consider that alongside the other rewards that were given out through the events that were going on at the time. Immediate rewards are rare in genshin but rewards via events/story/exploration is something that I feel like is unconsidered quite a lot. Regardless, I would really like to see the video you mentioned in passing about the Queerness within Genshin Impact. I feel as though there is a lot of interesting topics to cover and some good/bad that comes with each. Love your content!
As an Indian i am actually very happy and grateful for the Sumeru update. The region was huge as it represented so many countries irl! The sceneries are beautiful and the cultural and naming references were pretty well done. Some designs are kinda revealing but ehh its a game and as you said those designs are just how genshin's characters are styled/designed. I personally loved all the designs! :D 💗 (Tighnari tho lmaooo i do absolutely love him but if you really look at him, its just a lot going on in his outfit lmao its kinda funny) Apart from this, i just wish there were more dark skinned people in game. I expected more from sumeru in that sense. Also weird how all the gameplay of dark skinned characters is either not very good or straight bad (Xinyan, Dehya, Candace)?? Kaeya is okay for a 4* and Cyno being a limited 5* he had to be better than the rest but he's not that powerful compared to the rest of limited 5*. TLDR; I love Sumeru and it is like home for me, just wish there were more dark skinned characters 💚
Im perisan (iranian) and the representation of my culture was soo good and almost really accurate like kaveh and nilou faruzan from clothing and the skils name to their name was all and most of the forest area and the desert pari part was influenced by our mythology and culture and zoroastrian religion sebzrouz festival npc, dance and etc and best perisan (iranian) rep in media also turkish and iranian people are mostly pale so the characters who are turkish like dori and iranian make sense because we generally are pale ,lightolive and darkest is tan but characters who took north Africa or south asia they could gave more dark skin but skin tone representation isnt the only representation the ermites who are inspired by group of native north African amazigh people who would go with caravans and do some shady stuff the color theme is accurate too and sumeru had really great culturs rep but they could've gotten more variety in skin tones and given some south Asian character because there is no south Asian playable characters only nahida who is based both iranian and indian culture so yeah
The Dehya thing was kind of a double kick to the dick because a lot of people were actually really excited for her (me included) since she was already an important character in the main story (and also in my opinion has a really pretty design) so when she came out and she had literally one of the worst kits if not the worst in the whole game everyone was very fucking disapointed. There's things in her kit that literally make no sense (ex: the jump cancelling her whole burst) that couldn't just be mishaps (like mika's charged attack getting a little fix after he came out) they were things that had to be deliberatelly put there to make the character worst. Also to top it all off, her ability to do damage even compared to other standard banner characters or even 4 star character is ridiculouly low. TLDR: - A lot of people liked her before her release and therefore were VERY disapointed when it turned out she sucked. - Her kit was made bad very on purpose just because she was going to become a standard banner character (but she sucks ass even among those)

About the Zhongli thing, here some more context : He is one of the seven gods (that are very anticipated). He is from the area based on China (so the chinese community was even more exited, and they are a BIG portion). The basic only thing he gave on his realease was defense, in a game that benefits more of offense. This defense was good and useful, but it took 2 seconds to cast. (longes than you think), and if you were hit in the middle of it would cancel the ability. Hope I helped people understand that better :)
Have you heard of the Scara controversey? Supposedly CN fans have harmed cats over his character and now there's a huge hate towards Lyney in Korea. It's not confirmed if its true or not but I still think it's worth mentioning. There's also the senario where they withheld Paimon's EN VA payments for months which nearly made them homeless.
the aniversary was so fun to be around. I remember that people where using Qiqi's laying down emote and with every email she got some more stuff like two fragile resins that made horns for her etc. She was just collecting all those stuff while being so done it was so funny
CRYING when you got into the anniversary event thing, you said “lets set the scene: genshin impact” and got cut off by a genshin ad, the comedic timing was amazing
The resin one has only heated up too ever since Honkai Star Rail's recent Trailblaze Power update (cap raised from 180 to 240, and if it reaches max, it gradually accumulates in a different type of power that can be withdrawn later)
To be fair with the Kokomi hate, her kit was changed last minute when it actually went live. To be exact, Kokomi's E ICD was buffed so that every tick, it can trigger a reaction. This wasn't in the beta, and actually makes her what she is today. Granted, people still hated her anyway because of how negatively viewed healers were at the same time lol. After Zhongli was buffed, everyone was on the shield hype train, me included.
I've been playing since release and other than Noelle I hadn't used a shielder until around a month ago. (Noelle is just too good with Hu) I built a layla with a pretty much unbreakable shield and it's pretty cool. Still not sold on the shielding meta but maybe I rely on Kokomi too much. >.>
i find it crazy how long i’ve been involved in this community. i had witnessed all of these (except the whole al haitham thing since i took a break from genshin after sumeru dropped) and its super interesting to hear these controversies after it happened

About the Sumeru controversy, there were people also really angry at people who were wishing for darker skin tones. I commented on Dori's design purely on aesthetics that she'd look better with a darker skin tone, because the details of her outfit, like the white sleeves, quite blended in with her white skin. The whole design would've really popped if she'd had some color. And people got soooo mad! It was only an opinion on aesthetics of character design😭

I am still behind the people that had a problem with the original anniversary, the one for last year, and the one that is about to happen. Also one small think to keep in mind, the primos, wings and teapot furniture were originally an orchestra bundle that would retaill for around 30 dollars. It was a last minute panic change to save face against the backlash. As it stands hoyoverse has done nothing to earn the respect of the people who put so much into genshin. From their time, to their money. People can say that other gacha games can do their thing, but even with the rest of hoyoverse's catalog genshin appears as the unwanted middle child. Especially in light to the release of honkai star rail, and the treatment it has received. From lower "resin" recharge time, to reserve the overcapped "resin", to the increase it got. I think to a big extent it is deserved and warrented, and it's scary how much more are they going to keep pushing that gap. Fingers crossed that things will change in the future.

On the topic of shipping in genshin. Its perfectly fine to do that, In my opinion (and from experience) people are very aggressive and not open minded when it comes to shipping. You'll have people who ship a male/female in genshin (for example, albedo and sucrose) get shitted on and called homophobic, then you'll have people who ship female/female or male/male (ex: Raimiko and Kavhaitham) get shitted on as well. I think if the fandom was more open minded instead of being heterphobic or homophobic, things would be fine. I remember one time, I shipped Hu Tao and Xiao and I got called a straight white homohobe (im black and pansexual btw) and told that Hu Tao belonged to Ganyu. This is a example of what i mean and i believe people should be accepting and open minded to ships aslong as they arent illegal/weird. Also, there are times on Twitter where i see people saying "X gives off lesbian vibes or X is definitely gay" and will bash anyone who disagrees. I think we shouldn't take things seriously when it comes to shipping as well, because Mihoyo hasnt confirmed anything regarding sexuality or relationship.
I'm a fairly recent player of Genshin and recently hit my 1 year anniversary of playing Genshin, so if it happened before Sumeru, I wasn't there for it, since I joined around the 1st half of 3.0. I found your tierlist and coverage of past issues to be both entertaining and informational and I look forward to a part 2 should the future provide a need for it, and chances are it will, given how things are in the fandom and with the company.

As a persian i loved sumeru devs had done their homework with nilou and kaveh and lot of our Myhotlogies and festivals (sabzeruz is vased on our actuall new year we call it noruz) and Specially nilou in iran women don't have lot of freedom in clothing pursuing art and music they get bashed and usually harrased for it and to lot of persian girls relate to her Kaveh also resonate with lot of persian youth as it's pretty hard for young people with talent or any degrees to find home and lot of young people are usually homeless and they have to live with other family members since it's extremely expensive to buy houses I also love sumeru as it hits home for me specially bc i have left my country bc of obvious reasons qnd i sometimes get extremely homesick and sumeru is a reminder of my home to me😊

anniversary was probably the wildest ride i've ever had in a gacha game after the monkeygate incident on GBF. as a seasoned gacha player, anniversary events are the perfect time to: 1) gather new players and 2) make players return. It's really simple, you give lots of rewards that are time gated and make people keep coming back. It's so insane to think that to this day, genshin impact still gives you ten pulls on their anniversary and they think they are doing you a favour lmao. EVERYTHING was anniversary, discord, twitter, reddit, the fallen qiqi spam, it was so fucking wild. i kinda wish to go back tho
fun fact about the anniversary rewards!! the "real rewards" they gave out after everyone review bombed the game were actually leaked beforehand as being a PAID FOR PACKAGE to celebrate the concert, the rewards they gave us were more of a bandaid fix then anything, thats why the rewards were so musically themed
The anniversary: I was actually there for this. I had only been playing for a few months when this happened. It was insane. A few notes: Genshin fans were also review bombing other games and apps that had no association with HYV. It was a bit of a problem. Also the... gifts that were finally issued after everything, mostly the Wings.... The wings were actually a reward for an event that was going to take place during or shortly after the anniversary. When that event arrived, players had a daily task to go around parts of a map and collect these little jade coins (or something). However, once you collected them... that was it. You couldn't do anything with them. They were clearly meant to be exchanged for SOMETHING, but instead just sat in your inventory until the event ended. Some people were mad about it, and called for HYV to add something to exchange the items... but once the event ended no one seemed to really care. One other small controversy, it was more just on Reddit but did spill a bit into other platforms, was Childe's 2022 birthday art and the Genshin subreddit's habit of suppressing/removing posts about Male characters. (Heizou's 2022 birthday art was also a catalyst for this, but Childe often gets the credit) For those unaware: Someone made an edit of Childe's 2022 bday art to be topless. The post was flagged for being sexual/inappropriate so it was downvoted, flagged, and removed. (Heizou's OFFICIAL art was also removed for the same reason.) Yet at the same time art and edits of female characters in sexual situations/poses/outfits remained untouched. This had been an ongoing issue of posts about male characters constantly being downvoted or removed. (This varied from art to positive reviews of male characters kits to data showing a male character having more sales than a female character) The Childe edit removal was the final straw, and a "war" broke out on reddit. This comment is long enough so i won't go into anymore detail, but the whole thing ended with 1 or 2 of the mods stepping down, and an overhaul on their rules and how their autoremoval bot worked. I don't use Reddit, but this (i guess it's more Drama) spilled into fandom spaces on other social media platforms. Not sure if any real changes happened after either.
I enjoyed watching your video, hoping for the part 2! This is kinda more on the global side and kinda lacking CN side of the genshin community. Coz most of the game adjustments were made bc of the cn community iirc. Hope you add CN side too coz that mostly explains why Hoyo do some adjustments. As a ver. 1.0 player, iirc the explanation on resin was only 120 before is bc China had a policy/law where children / teens have limited screentime so they can focus on their studying which is kinda crazy btw The chaotic KFC event where only CN players can get the special wings and freebies. Global players were kinda mad abt this coz of the special treatment 😂 so genshin made it available as a twitch event Fischl having a timeout for several patches bc the CN Oz VA had to be replaced bc of his controversy. The Unreconciled Stars event where every time you need to collect the rewards, it needs resin and only certain characters were buffed. Every weekly bosses were 60 resin before and players complained that it needs to be lowered so we can do other stuff. Later on 1.5 patch, 30 resin cost on 3 weekly bosses was implemented The latern rite webevent, everyone got pranked lol The Kazuha banner one is kinda controversial too coz most genshin “meta” content creator then later regretted it coz the CN theorycrafters enjoyed playing him with other teams and he’s a must pull character The Keqing Banner should be added lol The Fix Dehya movement Scaramouche/Wanderer backlash of the CN fandom 💀💀 I know there are many more to add lol maybe the other comments will do 😂 To expand your research, you should also go to Hoyolab and Facebook (specially the genshin related groups) + Genshin Fandom Wiki (for some context of the “fixes”) maybe you’ll find something interesting there lol
As an Indian and a lore lover, I didn't care much about the colors. I loved how the lore had many Indian concepts and culture. The music was beautiful and whenever I saw the food of my culture, I had a smile on my face. I love Sumeru and I love returning back when I have quests and commissions because being welcomed by familiar music and culture in a game that isn't developed by Indian creators, just shows how much research Genshin did.
I remember when some of the Genshin fans were angry because of the Tears of Themis 1st Anniversary rewards. A single pull is 180 S-Chips, our pity is 100 pulls and we have 4 new cards coming out. We really need those rewards 😭
Missing Monagate from pre-Zhongligate Era and Missing Laterngate from missing the first Lantern Festival when the game released. Monagate one of her constellation damage amplification applies only to herself, not to the team, Hoyo responded it was a text error, CN submitted fraud reports to China's version of BBB idk what out come came from it and of course the worst aggregious scandal was Lanterngate. Genshin released during the Chinese golden week, a holiday break including Mid Autumn and Chinese National day. The Latern Rite, is a event that suppose to be the in game Mid Autumn festival did not make it in to the release as there were bugs and it was just not ready at the time. The Chinese community was pretty upset at this and demanded an explanation. Instead of explaining that the event wasn't ready, they said "Latern Rites is unrelated to real holidays, Teyvat is fictional world with no real life holidays." In response the Chinese community basically gutted them. After that Monagate happened, and Zhongligate happened and PR was just kind of bad overall. And of course would've loved to hear your take on Wanderergate where Chinese players wanted Wanderer removed from the game. That's a whole rabbit hole I'd love to see you dig into.
so for Dehya, it stung three times as bad because she's arguably one of the most popular, if not THE most popular Sumeru character. Her design is top-tier (aside from being too pale), her personality is amazing, her voice actress did a STELLAR job voicing her, and her role in the Sumeru story was awesome. Then Hoyo basically created her combat kit in such a way that it doesn't work with... basically most support characters, and the internal mechanics of elemental application just cause her skills to not work with most of the other characters at all. Of course she's usable in the overworld because every character is, but in any harder content she's almost useless in because of her kit issues as well as the fact that for a 5 star character, her base numbers are ATROCIOUS. also the dumbest thing about the sonic vs genshin thing with the Hoyo 'buying votes' because they gave primogem rewards after both the nomination and the award win... is that there was NO prior notification of those rewards being a thing before the voting windows opened. it was LITERALLY an unexpected reward of Hoyo afterwards xD
as for the sumeru stuff, i was so happy to see sanskrit words everywhere and food from my country too. i didnt really care that they didnt make anyone dark skinned. idk. it was alright to me. i loved the all the sanskrit words used in locations and in npc names. now in hsr too, they're using sanskrit words.
For the genshin anniversary, i was actually there, but sadly i was a newbie so i don't know much what happened😅 But i remember how absolutely chaotic the fandom was😂😂 (Omg i remember that one Qiqi fallen meme with the resin, primos and wings😂😂😂)
I was there, the anniv drama was building for quite a while. General player frustration from QoL features lacking, the weapon banner being ABYSMALLY predatory, etc etc, and hoyo's radio silence. People were already somewhat peeved. However what got it really started was the anniv giving only a mere 10 pull for limited banners. This was annoying enough, but what REALLY tipped the iceberg was the fact that they wanted people to do FREE ADVERTISING for the CHANCE of 100 primos. Artists, cosplayers, and animators alike were all enraged. The fandom's art creation is worth far FAR more than less than a SINGLE pull. So people submitted bad art on purpose, because hoyo was giving bad rewards for drawing it. People discussed the unfair rewards on hoyo's site, and hoyo responded by deleting all criticisms, and some players even claim their accounts were banned. Since people were being censored on the hoyo site, they started spamming Qiqifallen in the discord in protest. A few hoyo-supporter trolls who were annoyed made comments on the google play store, saying things like "I want everything free genshin bad game" which is not AT ALL what the angry fandom was complaining about at the time, showing that these comments were obviously the ""bootlickers."" However, a videogame news site picked up these few comments, and made an article stating that genshin players are review bombing genshin because of bad rewards!... Which then caused thousands of genshin haters to join in and attack google classroom and clash of clans, and bootlickers to further review bomb. A few of the artists also made bad reviews but back then, if you looked, it was overwhelmingly not the artists doing the review bombing. I remember lost pause (a youtuber) made a video about the alleged ""review bombing"" but there's not much actual evidence from that time aside from people who were actually there and checked the store. As the drama started cooling down, people continued spamming Qiqifallen in the discord, moreso as a meme and fandom solidarity. Honestly by that point, people were just doing it for fun, it was just funny and harmless. The Qiqifallen spammers even largely kept their spam to the general chat by the end, letting people use all the other chats in the server for, well, chatting. Until the discord started banning Qiqifallen, which only reignited the "censorship" rage.
you forgot to mention the fact that during the anniversary the official genshin impact discord server was being spammed with qiqi stickers that that was the only thing you could see on most channels and the mods had to slow mode general chat for like 4hrs or something 😭😭 man that was such a funny time to be a genshin player

It's coming mostly from people who view high damage as the only viable way to play the game, so niche characters will be hated because they might not be able to 1 cycle a boss, like I main traveler and while I like hydro traveler I wish the burst was better
@@curtiseaston1711 damage isn't the issue. It's her bad uptime. Her E only lasts for 12s but the resistence to interruption it gives is actually only 9s. It's just very inconvenient for most rotations, so you still feel like bringing another protective support. But if you do, why need Dehya at all? I really want to use her with Liney but even C4 Yanfei's meme build feels more comfy

Let’s just be honest Genshin purposely and obviously ripped off a lot of breath of the wild’s game mechanics on a level somewhere between „taking inspiration“ and straight up coping but that’s not necessary a bad thing. We see stuff like this a lot in the game world and sometimes there so many games that do this that it’s becoming an hole game genre like Souls like from dark souls or Metroidvania from Metroid. That’s a very normal evolvement of games.
Hoyo is a company that likes to play save and don’t take a lot of risk what we see over and over again. As you said yourself all of genshins nations are heavily based on already existing cultures and most of it’s Story is very close to different existing folklore of various cultures too. That’s certainly not the most unique or creative way to design a game but still doesn’t mean that it is a bad game. It clearly isn’t perfect but also has to be a good game otherwise it would had so much success and such a big player base. I personally think that a lot of people like that it isn’t that unique because it feels familiar to them.

One thing I’d like to say about the semuru drama
I’m an arab and can confirm that hoyo does its homework when it comes to researching history and culture .The desert region is so rich with Arab history and mythology it is amazing to see.
Also a lot of media represent us in bad light often, as barbarians or backward thinking or not developed enough. So it’s so refreshing to see a region partially inspired by my home be shown as such a strong and rich one

Candace was reference to kandake a nubian queen who was dark skin. there are plenty of npcs and characters such as nahida and dori who are influenced by south asian deities yet their skin looks like their emitting light lmao. south asians are varying degrees of brown with very visible melanin.

I heard it could be technically used to remove anemoculi, statues of the seven and i even heard it could remove domains but idk if that was 100% a joke or if it was based in reality.
Anyways, don't accept CO-OP requests for the time being, ESPECIALLY if you're in the CN server since this thing has only been recorded on there. Stay safe and don't use kaveh to not possibly permanently remove the emblem domain from your game.

I was there and the anniversary backlash actually scared other gacha game companys a lot. I played cookie run kingdom and all of a sudden they just started flooding our mail box with crazy gifts for a week. It was incredibly sudden and the reason thet were giving it out was they were thankful for players playing the game.

I JOINED at the time of the anniversary and I had been playing genshin on the side and I was so shocked at the difference I was like “is this how these games are meant to be?”
fgo gave us pity 3 months after the review bombs, when it had been a pityless gacha for 6 and a half years up til that point,
as an Iranian genshin player they did a pretty good job on adapting names and stories from Iranian culture. for example do you remember Nilou's dance? it really means for us because it kinda represents our woman life freedom revolution. many players like me can relate to this topic because we can't even perform a dance in public.
also there was so many occasions where some of our cultural celebration were mentioned in the samsara archon quest.
but about colourism, I should say there are many different skin tones at least in Iran. we have white, neutral tones And browner, darker ones. I think Mihoyo could have done better about this concept. I wished to see more variety in skin tones in Sumeru because it has to represent the middle east , India and North Africa.
in general i am so greatful that they consider our culture so much. sumeru region really feels like home to me. from the forest to the desert. this is how it should be in reality. in peace, without any war or conflict.

This- litterally just made me cry, I dont even know if in a good or bad way. As Sumeru was the first region for me that really felt alive and gave me the experience back, that I got when I first started genshin on the release day. I'm from middle Europe, so I dont have the same background as u do and I cant say if genshin represents something good or bad in sumeru. But just the fact that there is someone that says sumeru feels like home makes me cry, bc I saw nothing but hate for this wonderful nation.

Being a fan of both Sonic and Genshin during the game awards debacle was weird because while the two fandoms were just duking it out I was just mad that both games got totally snubbed for the soundtrack category.
Edit: Also while this was going on, the head writer of Sonic Frontiers was talking about how hyped he was for the next Genshin update on his podcast, which was kinda funny

when it comes to the sumeru drama, as a north african person i really felt that for once at least when it came to our culture it really got the respect that it deserved because i could recognize actually a lot of things in the game such as dishes or references. but when it comes to representation, i think that they should have done better because even if there are actually more « light skinned » arab people (like me lol) that people believe according to stereotypes, brown people EXIST too and also not only one shade of brown exists? like the colors of our skins are all different and thats actually beautiful. so yeah we would love more representation and diversity in this game, even if hoyo didnt fall into the cliché trap, the fact that i got to feel respect while others didn’t when we share the same culture is actually upsetting.

Yes I absolutely love this response and completely agree. I'm more on the south asian side of the spectrum and it was fantastic seeing things that I was recognizing in terms of foods and places or running around the city thinking "hey that's my uncle's name" but they could definitely have more diversity. We want more diversity and it's such a small thing to go shades more on a 3d model so it frustrates me that it's not there. Re Sumeru, coming from the perspective of a Bangladeshi-Malaysian:
1. Sumeru's culture seemed to be based on the migration history of Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism - a lot of which converged arcross South/South East Asia, with some crossover in the Middle East. A fair number of the NPC names were VERY Malay (Effendi, Maimunah) and Malaysia was one of those meeting points - makes sense, since Hoyoverse does have a Singapore office & they're right next door. This is likely why it seems like a mishmash - a lot of Middle East & South/South East Asian countries would share influences based on religion & migration.
2. It's interesting to think about how pre-release, people were like "omg they made the good guys [Akademiya] white and the bad guys [Eremites] brown!". And then the Archon Quests happen and it turns out the Akademiya is a fully corrupt institution, and the Eremites were largely manipulated by the Akademiya & had good points! Probably the only reason we don't fight the Akademiya as enemies is because you could knock most of them over with a feather.
Actually completely wrong lmao. Sumeru is mostly Iran and India with an Egyptian and Maghrebi focus in the desert and even then the last desert expansion was all persian. The religions it takes after are Zoroastrianism, hinduism, and buddhism with almost no actual relations to Islam. Many npcs have Persian and arabic names with some having south asian names. (effendi is a turkish title btw)
Btw, most of the Malay names are Arabic because Malays are muslims. There's some names like Orkid or Melati (flower names in Malay) or Tuah or Jebat (Malay warrior names) but yeah, the rest are mostly Arabic names.

I don’t know if you heard about this debacle since you’re not interested about meta. But there was the Yae drama on her power level. Now this one needs a lot of context: Yae Miko was hyped up to the heavens ! people were waiting for her to drop, Raiden brought a little hope on the people that Electro wasn’t that bad of an element after all, Dendro wasn’t released.
So she came out and… people were not happy ( who could i’ve guessed ), she was constantly compared to fischl, 90 cost burst, a weird passive with em when electro reactions weren’t a focus, her turrets targeting objects, no i-frames, long on-field time, people had a lot of complains.
This lead to one of Hoyo weirdest and only (since Zhongli) attempt to change a characters after release: they made her turrets target the closest thing to you, which meant you could be fighting a hilichurl but all of your damage is going on the almighty powerful and indestructible campfire. They quickly remove that change a few days later
The reason why i love this drama is because the fandom went full on conspiracy theory, people started saying that some characters kit were not the same as what they were supposed to be. And the remnants of their old kit were some artifacts sera that fits them aesthetically ( so yoimiya was supposed to work with Retracing Bolide and Yae with Shimenawa)
Overall it wasn’t hateful and based on nothing like Kokomo’s kit. After some time people lived with it and Dendro appeased most people

I remember this!!! My main team consisted primarily of Raiden, Yae, Zhongli, and Jean. I’m not really a meta player, so I was having lots of fun with that team and Yae (I still do!)
As an Indian person, if you look past the skintones of characters, Sumeru is one of the most accurate representations of my culture that I’ve seen. Do I wish there were people with darker skin tones that weren’t npcs? Yes, but hoyo definitely did their research and put enough time and care as much as they did with the other regions. And at the end of the day, seeing my culture and people represented in a game I love will always make me happy!
What a lot of people don’t get is that while to us in more western cultures dark skinned people are very common just as much as any other race but in places like china where the game is made it’s not common at all and a lot of people their are racist the fact that they have such good representation culturally is a shock to me honestly

While I also can't speak for people whose cultures are represented by Sumeru I would like to voice my appreciation of Hoyoverses portrayal of Mondstadt as someone from Germany I see it as incredibly refreshing to see other parts of my culture represented since most videogames like to single-mindedly represent any German inspired thing or character as either Ha ha fat beer drinking silly sounding man/woman or the second World War and while both of these are satirical or amusing it can get tiring so seeing Mondstadt rich with festivals and tradition is great

to me apart from having a bad kit the main reasons people were mad was because previous sumeru brown characters (candace/ cyno) did disappoint a lot of players gameplay wise so the drama got mixed up with all of sumeru colorism and racism stuff
The other thing was that she was a standard character and that she was that bad. People felt that she was made to disappoint player when they lose her 50/50 and push them to spend ( which is very plausible to my opinion )
So yeah her kit honestly is very unique and refreshing amongst genshin characters but it’s really sad that her power is not on par with her originality ( her best team is Mono Pyro with Bennett Xiangling and Kazuha. And guess who is a better option ? Xinyan… a 4 star characters famously known to be a bad character )

To add to the standard thing, they made her kit bad in the beta and even worse upon release. A lot of ppl were rlly upset about this and to top it off they made her a standard character, which was something that wasn't seen as common pre-Sumeru (which, with Tighnari it only made sense to make him standard because we needed a standard dendro character).
The addition of Dehya to standard kinda implied to a lot of ppl that she wouldn't be further buffed AND incentivized a lot of ppl to pull for her because it's completely possible to lose all of your 50/50s ever and never get Dehya (personally I've been playing since 1.0 and I still don't have Keqing 💀) so it incentivized pulling for her because she would never get reruns afterwards. In a way this kinda implies that Hoyo wanted to make the most out of her release despite her performing rather poorly as a character, which is kinda scummy but on par for any gacha company 💀
Just pointing out- Cyno’s gameplay disappointment is largely due to being a selfish dps with not a lot of good supports (at time of release) rather than damage. People still complain about damage, but selfish dps’s always get the “man this character doesn’t do enough” treatment.
Tldr: the displeasure at Cyno’s kit is largely a skill issue🤷♀️

I'd love a deep dive into the queer coding of genshin! I agree, as someone used to having to sift through hay to find needles of queerness in things I like, playing genshin has felt like sifting through hay and constantly finding full crowbars of queerness. Here is something I would like to say for Sumeru. I think Sumeru’s desert is based off Egypt or Arabia, but I think Sumeru city is based off India. Hoyoverse really did their work on Sumeru. Such as adding dishes like: Biryani, Pani puri etc. And, the music sounds like it came out from an indian movie. It’s gorgeous to see a region based off my own. Oh- and also, the instruments used to make Sumeru’s music, is the same as regular indian music. So, yeah-

Akademiya is inspired by perisan (iranian ) culture and zoroastrian religion with 6 darshans name ps architecture characters and cloths the aranara era is inspired by India

I was so excited for Sumeru since I'm Indian and thought it was weird when people online were upset with how Sumeru portrayed South Asia. Plus Sumeru was never actually supposed to just be the Middle East but fantasy. Saying it was is doing an absolutely HUGE disservice to both Hoyoverse who worked hard on it and the people who live there in real life. Plus if I recall correctly there's also a ton of Indian and African references in Sumeru yet no actual Indian inspired character besides maybe Nahida and Kaeya. I absolutely cannot blame Hoyoverse for that though. They probably do know most Indian people ahev dark brown skin and are doing everything in their power to avoid representing them like plague. Like can you imagine if we ever get an Indian character one day with a name like Rakshata Chawla and they're pale white. that would both be incredibly funny yet sad and the same time. Plus isn't Candace literally based on a whole ass black woman to though?

WELL, okay, I'm Indian. South Indian, to be more precise. I still think that Sumeru could use more skin tone diversity, since it's inspired from SEVERAL cultures (who all have varying skin tones, including pale skin, yes). I also think the excuse that only desert people can be tanned falls apart when you look at any people living in rainforest/jungle biomes.

It pains me whenever even POC themselves brush away the colorism issue, claiming it's no big deal because they think only white twitter people are affected by it. Like, no? It feels like internal racism to me. It's fine to not be affected by the issue, but you still need to acknowledge that it IS an issue. It's *not* normal that in the three years Genshin has been out, there are just three or four tan characters (and zero dark skinned characters).
On note of the colorism in genshin, versus the Dehya Debacle. I think it is very important to note and hold genshin accountable on the counts for the playability of the characters, their tier-listing/power capabilities versus their skin color. Of all five (5) characters with melanin, only 2 are five stars, and only one of them is even considered a 'decent' character. None of them are considered 'meta' and 1 of the five stars plays worse than some of the 4 stars at c6. I am a huge Dehya stan as a character, but lets not act like Genshin's colorism is not tied directly this issue involving Dehya. It's not hard to connect, Candace is arguably better than Dehya. She's four-star. But I digress, it's obvious to me she was shelved and they won't fix her. The only other possibility being she is going to be buffed when they come out with Natlan. (the pyro universe) so, we'll see how they handle this and other PoC in the future. Especially considering the word "natlan" is Aztec for "The land of the nahuatl" So like. Please. Don't mess this up, hoyo.
Yeah, it would genuinely hurt if my favorite game messed up Natlan. They're already on thin ice for making a largely brown country in Teyvat be the land of pyro, of aggressive people according to basically everyone. I don't want them to make it worse. I want them to succeed. I genuinely want them to pay respects to the characters and to the cultures. And I want the characters to be cracked.
Honestly I was thinking the same thing, the fact her kit performs so poorly is SO odd considering she was a very very hyped character with a large fan base, a Pyro character which is one of the strongest elements in the game with some of the strongest elemental reactions, and for me, the fact every other character released for sumeru has performed just fine if not creating a whole new meta/playstyle. I absolutely love dehya and I do the best I can to make her work but it is really unfortunate how I can sink all my resources into a character, get her weapon, and she ends up performing worse than my rotting diluc if I don't apply buffs correctly for her. I will always still use her because she is gorgeous and one of my favorite characters from sumeru, but it's hard to look at it all piled up and not feel like there's some bit of colorism happening. I hope our girl gets a buff in a future update, even if it's slight.

I like the things you've mentioned in 26:33. Personally, I think the controversy regarding Tighnari's old EN VA's serves as a reminder for how important it is for people to be able to develop media literacy and information literacy.
Zhongli was never bad, he just didn’t have the astronomical damage output players were expecting because Hoyo didn’t make it clear in the marketing he’s largely a defensive support/control character. I'm a guy who rolled for Dehya Day 1, despite being completely aware of how bad she is. This will be a long one.
For the more casual players, I'll attempt to explain why people were so upset with Dehya's kit:
So lets first look at her Elemental Skill, Motlen Inferno. It's a big AoE field similar to Albedo's. But unlike Albedo where it's on a short cooldown so it can be reapplied constantly, Dehya's field can only be applied twice on a massive 20 second cooldown. And the main use of the field is damage mitigation and interruption resistance. But shields already do this, and mostly on a lower cooldown too so she just ends up being inferior to every shielder in the game not named Xinyan (Xinyan's shield scaling and application is still bugged to this day but that's another discussion for another time) Even worse is that the field's duration isn't refreshed when reapplied via it's skill, only her Elemental Burst, which leads to...
Her Elemental Burst having poor synergy with nearly all other Bursts and even most skills. Despite using Left Click (or whatever console players use) to speed up her attacks, they don't trigger any abilities that require "normal attacks". So she has no synergy with Yelan's burst. No synergy with Xingqiu's burst. No synergy with Beidou's burst, and so on and so forth. It's basically just damage, and it's not even good at that with her poor scaling. And then it also has a large energy cost of 70. Combined with her pathetic energy generation, she either needs a boatload of energy recharge or another Pyro/Favonius weapon character to battery her with lots of particles. So in most cases, you don't end up using it.
They could have made her good, but they made her bad on purpose and they "sell you her solutions" through her Constellations. Just look at them. C1 fixes her scaling and lets her be more flexible in artifact stats. Her C2/C5 fixes the duration problem and damage problem. Her C4/C3 fix the energy issues and damage, and then her C6 further fixes her damage issue with additional crit rate and crit damage.
But it's not like you can roll for her. You only had one chance to do that, and that time is long gone. So if you want to fix your Dehya, not only do you have to lose a 50/50, you have to lose it to Dehya as well, where she is competing with 6 other characters for that pity. It's even worse on the standard banner because weapons are included in that.
So after looking at her kit, it's unfortunate that there isn't a single team in Genshin that uses Dehya that wouldn't be better off using another Pyro character that isn't Xinyan. She requires a lot of investment: she wants HP, and ATK, and Crit Stats, and lots of energy recharge if you plan on even using her Burst. And after all that investment, she has a below average showing for it prior to C4.
You know what the craziest part about all this that I didn't even mention yet? Dehya, ironically enough, would have made a fantastic burgeon unit with some small tweaks here and there. But with how she is now, even if you give her full Elemental Mastery, Thoma is a better burgeon unit than her.
What a tragic character and a tragic set of events that happened to her.
kinda disagree that thoma is better. I built both and thoma just takes too long to get his burst up and its so much easier to use dehya for burgeon. I’ve tried both in abyss before and dehya is def better when it comes to speed and efficiency.
Two additional dramas,
Kazuha post 2.0 : after version 2.0 released with updated anemo reactions, Kazuha became one of the best and most desirable characters. This was also aggravated because he did not rerun for a whole year. Cue people being harassed and in some instances being sent death threats for having a bunch of pixels on a screen.
Edit : pre 2.0 Kazuha was labeled as a bad unit and a 5* sucrose, which caused his first banner sale to tank as well.
Scaramouche vs CN Male Players: a newly uncovered issue but one that has existed since Scaramouche’s first appearance, a very specific demographic of players vehemently hate and despise Scaramouche to the point of murdering cats in the name of Scarameow, finding the specific employees that worked on Scaramouche, attempting to murder one of Mihoyo’s CEO, harassing his VA (who also voices Aether!) and petitioned the government to have him removed which obviously failed.
I like how the government just went and played the game to say:
"Naw, he fine, you stupid".
I know this is no laughing matter, but this specific aspect of it just so hilarious to me.

Also, Sumeru was basically land of the men. As a Tighnari main, the Elliot situation was awful to hear about. The way he found his victims, especially when using other Genshin VAs like Alejandro to get closer to minors was sickening. My heart goes out to all of the victims. I had actually really liked the voice Gindi gave Tighnari, but tbh Zachary Gordon’s voice sounds wayyy better to me now. (In hindsight, the old voice sounded kinda off. idk.)

As a brown person from India, I don’t particularly mind the skin tone of the characters. I would definitely like more skin tones in game, but I won’t stop playing the game because of it. Its really easy to just stay away from toxic people. Avoid Twitter (no im not calling it X, dumb name) and you should be okay. For me im always on the wholesome side of genshin where people draw amazing fanart and stuff.

There was also the Anniversary Web event that contributed to the outrage.
The front page of this web event showed that if you logged in daily, you’d have a chance to get a million primogems… after splitting the amount across other players of course. Sure, players knew that they wouldn’t actually get a million primogems, but most were hoping for a decent amount (maybe enough for a 10 pull).
After all, the web event was pretty strict since if you missed more than 1 day, you’d get nothing. Plus it’s an anniversary event.
So, after making extra sure to login daily to this event, people got… about 100 primogems (seriously, some people actually got less). It literally would’ve been better if this event never happened because it really did feel like a slap-on-the-face seeing that big million primogem number dwindle down to less than a single pull.
I took a break during Summeru, and I had no idea of the Gindi controversy. I did think Tignari sounded a bit different from what I remembered. Props to Mihoyo for changing the VA on the spot.

Yes 1.3 lantern rite had people complaining in the surveys so much because it was causing early burnouts. Mihoyo did fix it in 2.4 and had the playable characters interactable in the event itself.
Man, Genshin is a magnet for the drama, on some days I regret crawling out of my corner and interacting with people from this fandom, but some are great people. And yes, please do a deep dive into the queer coding of Genshin (because i've never seen fruitier games than those hoyoverse makes) and a part two would be great on the scandals, if you would be interested✨️

In 15:14, I agree that there is a disappointing lack of dark skinned people, but I do think it's a step in the right direction since a lot of kids also play Genshin and this may be their first introduction to such a rich and fascinating culture. Personally for me, I prefer well-written characters, even the characters I looovvvee to hate (dori) over a character that's only purpose is to be "the best because they're this [race] and from this [country]".
Poorly explained I know but i've noticed this happening in waayyy to many shows. It's similar situation to how woman are often written in anime: even though there's a lack of woman and men are more focused in some shows, if the woman is such a well thought out character then I don't really care and pay close attention to " what her race should've been, her clothes should've looked like this yaddyyada" or how little female characters there are in the show.
Or maybe I'm just content with anything.
Edit: If anything, I consider it an achievement since, unlike the West, China itself isn't as exposed to other cultures in their own country unless they personally travel around. So the fact they were able to put so much effort into implementing all the cultures that inspired this region (including the other regions they've created) in the way that they did is a major step forward when it comes to representation and a sense of diversity in their country in a way that the majority can understand. So I think it should be praised rather than heavily criticized.
I see your point but there's no reason to not ask for both. It can be praised AND criticized for not going the little bit extra. In fact, it should. I'm sure you didn't mean it this way but it's not fair to imply that people should be happy with what they got and not critique the other glaring issues.
Also you're right about China generally being closed off but we're talking about a global company whose team has spent a Significant Amount Of Time (years atp) researching these regions and their cultures and, by extension, their people. I agree that it doesn't hurt to ask for more, I was stating that if I had to chose between a poorly written region and characters, over a well written region and characters (with some details missing on the side) then I'd choose the latter.
I think the main reason as to why I'm content with Genshin is because I don't expect it to be perfect. Perhaps my expectations are low, but even for a big company I don't necessarily expect them to get everything accurately.
I forgot where exactly I heard this (it was a movie interview I believe) but I remember this man saying something along the lines of, "A white man can write a movie about black culture and it's people just fine, but the only thing they'll be lacking is the "heart"". So the more I think about it, the more I'm not really surprised that hoyo missed a few details. And if all they missed was the skin colour of our beloved characters, then I'm not really the person to be critical about it unless people from those cultures say otherwise. And from what was said in the video as well as other commentators, there doesn't seem to be an issue.
It obvious Hoyoverse puts a lot of love into genshin and their other games, so I doubt that they had any ill intentions. It's also their characters too, so I'm in more neutral position on the matter.
There is still hope though, maybe we'll get some darker skinned characters when Natlan comes out ꉂ(ˊᗜˋ*)♡
I mean there are definitely dark skinned people in china though. Hoyoverse did a really good job researching different cultures, I myself seeing my own culture in Sumeru, but skin tones fluctuate in all parts of the world, even places without much immigrants and their own colorism in Liyue was grossly overlooked imo
What a lot of people don’t get is that while to us in more western cultures dark skinned people are very common just as much as any other race but in places like china where the game is made it’s not common at all and a lot of people their are racist the fact that they have such good representation culturally is a shock to me honestly
Also for the Resin system, aside from the measly 120 cap, back in the 1.0 version, every time limited events required resin to play those events (don't know how much resin needed). Players were quite upset with it, from what I know which then later in the next update, Hoyoverse/Mihoyo finally scrapped the Resin requirement when playing these events which kinda goes in place in the "Taking Accountability" tier.
Kokomi was my first 5 star so I got her without any bias. Despite being stuck at level 40 her healing and hydro application made me love her, I loved not dying.
What about Scara controversy? I mean, yeah, it happened only in China community, but it still was huge enough for people to notice, especially with all the cats that were killed in the process 😿
I as a long time gacha player really didn't see the issue with the anniversary, truth be told. Most gachas aren't as f2p friendly as Genshin Impact is, and I think people fail to consider that alongside the other rewards that were given out through the events that were going on at the time. Immediate rewards are rare in genshin but rewards via events/story/exploration is something that I feel like is unconsidered quite a lot. Regardless, I would really like to see the video you mentioned in passing about the Queerness within Genshin Impact. I feel as though there is a lot of interesting topics to cover and some good/bad that comes with each. Love your content!
As an Indian i am actually very happy and grateful for the Sumeru update. The region was huge as it represented so many countries irl! The sceneries are beautiful and the cultural and naming references were pretty well done. Some designs are kinda revealing but ehh its a game and as you said those designs are just how genshin's characters are styled/designed. I personally loved all the designs! :D 💗

Apart from this, i just wish there were more dark skinned people in game. I expected more from sumeru in that sense. Also weird how all the gameplay of dark skinned characters is either not very good or straight bad (Xinyan, Dehya, Candace)?? Kaeya is okay for a 4* and Cyno being a limited 5* he had to be better than the rest but he's not that powerful compared to the rest of limited 5*.
TLDR; I love Sumeru and it is like home for me, just wish there were more dark skinned characters 💚
Im perisan (iranian) and the representation of my culture was soo good and almost really accurate like kaveh and nilou faruzan from clothing and the skils name to their name was all and most of the forest area and the desert pari part was influenced by our mythology and culture and zoroastrian religion sebzrouz festival npc, dance and etc and best perisan (iranian) rep in media also turkish and iranian people are mostly pale so the characters who are turkish like dori and iranian make sense because we generally are pale ,lightolive and darkest is tan but characters who took north Africa or south asia they could gave more dark skin but skin tone representation isnt the only representation the ermites who are inspired by group of native north African amazigh people who would go with caravans and do some shady stuff the color theme is accurate too and sumeru had really great culturs rep but they could've gotten more variety in skin tones and given some south Asian character because there is no south Asian playable characters only nahida who is based both iranian and indian culture so yeah
Kaveh is also such a cute name too I never have found such a perfect name.
The Dehya thing was kind of a double kick to the dick because a lot of people were actually really excited for her (me included) since she was already an important character in the main story (and also in my opinion has a really pretty design) so when she came out and she had literally one of the worst kits if not the worst in the whole game everyone was very fucking disapointed.
There's things in her kit that literally make no sense (ex: the jump cancelling her whole burst) that couldn't just be mishaps (like mika's charged attack getting a little fix after he came out) they were things that had to be deliberatelly put there to make the character worst. Also to top it all off, her ability to do damage even compared to other standard banner characters or even 4 star character is ridiculouly low.
TLDR: - A lot of people liked her before her release and therefore were VERY disapointed when it turned out she sucked.
- Her kit was made bad very on purpose just because she was going to become a standard banner character (but she sucks ass even among those)

About the Zhongli thing, here some more context :
He is one of the seven gods (that are very anticipated).
He is from the area based on China (so the chinese community was even more exited, and they are a BIG portion).
The basic only thing he gave on his realease was defense, in a game that benefits more of offense.
This defense was good and useful, but it took 2 seconds to cast. (longes than you think), and if you were hit in the middle of it would cancel the ability.

Have you heard of the Scara controversey? Supposedly CN fans have harmed cats over his character and now there's a huge hate towards Lyney in Korea. It's not confirmed if its true or not but I still think it's worth mentioning. There's also the senario where they withheld Paimon's EN VA payments for months which nearly made them homeless.
There was another gay ppl being gay scandal in Korea about Lyney 💀

the aniversary was so fun to be around. I remember that people where using Qiqi's laying down emote and with every email she got some more stuff like two fragile resins that made horns for her etc. She was just collecting all those stuff while being so done it was so funny
CRYING when you got into the anniversary event thing, you said “lets set the scene: genshin impact” and got cut off by a genshin ad, the comedic timing was amazing
The resin one has only heated up too ever since Honkai Star Rail's recent Trailblaze Power update (cap raised from 180 to 240, and if it reaches max, it gradually accumulates in a different type of power that can be withdrawn later)
To be fair with the Kokomi hate, her kit was changed last minute when it actually went live. To be exact, Kokomi's E ICD was buffed so that every tick, it can trigger a reaction. This wasn't in the beta, and actually makes her what she is today.
Granted, people still hated her anyway because of how negatively viewed healers were at the same time lol. After Zhongli was buffed, everyone was on the shield hype train, me included.
I've been playing since release and other than Noelle I hadn't used a shielder until around a month ago. (Noelle is just too good with Hu) I built a layla with a pretty much unbreakable shield and it's pretty cool. Still not sold on the shielding meta but maybe I rely on Kokomi too much. >.>

About the Sumeru controversy, there were people also really angry at people who were wishing for darker skin tones.
I commented on Dori's design purely on aesthetics that she'd look better with a darker skin tone, because the details of her outfit, like the white sleeves, quite blended in with her white skin. The whole design would've really popped if she'd had some color.
And people got soooo mad!

I am still behind the people that had a problem with the original anniversary, the one for last year, and the one that is about to happen. Also one small think to keep in mind, the primos, wings and teapot furniture were originally an orchestra bundle that would retaill for around 30 dollars. It was a last minute panic change to save face against the backlash. As it stands hoyoverse has done nothing to earn the respect of the people who put so much into genshin. From their time, to their money. People can say that other gacha games can do their thing, but even with the rest of hoyoverse's catalog genshin appears as the unwanted middle child. Especially in light to the release of honkai star rail, and the treatment it has received. From lower "resin" recharge time, to reserve the overcapped "resin", to the increase it got.
I think to a big extent it is deserved and warrented, and it's scary how much more are they going to keep pushing that gap. Fingers crossed that things will change in the future.

People were dogging and hating on him when they first saw him because they thought he was just going to be an expensive sucrose or a knock off venti, but when they found out just how crazy kazuha was, everyone that skipped him immediately regretted it and wished that they never skipped him LMFAO I think that was just a silly goofy moment where people misunderstood him

On the topic of shipping in genshin.
Its perfectly fine to do that, In my opinion (and from experience) people are very aggressive and not open minded when it comes to shipping. You'll have people who ship a male/female in genshin (for example, albedo and sucrose) get shitted on and called homophobic, then you'll have people who ship female/female or male/male (ex: Raimiko and Kavhaitham) get shitted on as well.
I think if the fandom was more open minded instead of being heterphobic or homophobic, things would be fine. I remember one time, I shipped Hu Tao and Xiao and I got called a straight white homohobe (im black and pansexual btw) and told that Hu Tao belonged to Ganyu. This is a example of what i mean and i believe people should be accepting and open minded to ships aslong as they arent illegal/weird.
Also, there are times on Twitter where i see people saying "X gives off lesbian vibes or X is definitely gay" and will bash anyone who disagrees. I think we shouldn't take things seriously when it comes to shipping as well, because Mihoyo hasnt confirmed anything regarding sexuality or relationship.
I'm a fairly recent player of Genshin and recently hit my 1 year anniversary of playing Genshin, so if it happened before Sumeru, I wasn't there for it, since I joined around the 1st half of 3.0. I found your tierlist and coverage of past issues to be both entertaining and informational and I look forward to a part 2 should the future provide a need for it, and chances are it will, given how things are in the fandom and with the company.
The funny thing about the rewards that Gershwin gave after the anniversary stuff was there had already been some info that implied those rewards were meant to be a purchase bundle
If its the one thing that genshin impact has been consistent with is the fandom always coming up new ways to stir up trouble and controversies. For every controversy we get from the genshin fanbase, I'd be a rich man.

As a persian i loved sumeru devs had done their homework with nilou and kaveh and lot of our Myhotlogies and festivals (sabzeruz is vased on our actuall new year we call it noruz) and
Specially nilou in iran women don't have lot of freedom in clothing pursuing art and music they get bashed and usually harrased for it and to lot of persian girls relate to her
Kaveh also resonate with lot of persian youth as it's pretty hard for young people with talent or any degrees to find home and lot of young people are usually homeless and they have to live with other family members since it's extremely expensive to buy houses
I also love sumeru as it hits home for me specially bc i have left my country bc of obvious reasons qnd i sometimes get extremely homesick and sumeru is a reminder of my home to me😊

anniversary was probably the wildest ride i've ever had in a gacha game after the monkeygate incident on GBF.
as a seasoned gacha player, anniversary events are the perfect time to: 1) gather new players and 2) make players return. It's really simple, you give lots of rewards that are time gated and make people keep coming back. It's so insane to think that to this day, genshin impact still gives you ten pulls on their anniversary and they think they are doing you a favour lmao.
EVERYTHING was anniversary, discord, twitter, reddit, the fallen qiqi spam, it was so fucking wild. i kinda wish to go back tho
fun fact about the anniversary rewards!! the "real rewards" they gave out after everyone review bombed the game were actually leaked beforehand as being a PAID FOR PACKAGE to celebrate the concert, the rewards they gave us were more of a bandaid fix then anything, thats why the rewards were so musically themed
The anniversary: I was actually there for this. I had only been playing for a few months when this happened. It was insane. A few notes: Genshin fans were also review bombing other games and apps that had no association with HYV. It was a bit of a problem. Also the... gifts that were finally issued after everything, mostly the Wings.... The wings were actually a reward for an event that was going to take place during or shortly after the anniversary. When that event arrived, players had a daily task to go around parts of a map and collect these little jade coins (or something). However, once you collected them... that was it. You couldn't do anything with them. They were clearly meant to be exchanged for SOMETHING, but instead just sat in your inventory until the event ended. Some people were mad about it, and called for HYV to add something to exchange the items... but once the event ended no one seemed to really care.
One other small controversy, it was more just on Reddit but did spill a bit into other platforms, was Childe's 2022 birthday art and the Genshin subreddit's habit of suppressing/removing posts about Male characters. (Heizou's 2022 birthday art was also a catalyst for this, but Childe often gets the credit)
For those unaware: Someone made an edit of Childe's 2022 bday art to be topless. The post was flagged for being sexual/inappropriate so it was downvoted, flagged, and removed. (Heizou's OFFICIAL art was also removed for the same reason.) Yet at the same time art and edits of female characters in sexual situations/poses/outfits remained untouched. This had been an ongoing issue of posts about male characters constantly being downvoted or removed. (This varied from art to positive reviews of male characters kits to data showing a male character having more sales than a female character)
The Childe edit removal was the final straw, and a "war" broke out on reddit. This comment is long enough so i won't go into anymore detail, but the whole thing ended with 1 or 2 of the mods stepping down, and an overhaul on their rules and how their autoremoval bot worked.
I don't use Reddit, but this (i guess it's more Drama) spilled into fandom spaces on other social media platforms. Not sure if any real changes happened after either.

This is kinda more on the global side and kinda lacking CN side of the genshin community. Coz most of the game adjustments were made bc of the cn community iirc. Hope you add CN side too coz that mostly explains why Hoyo do some adjustments.
As a ver. 1.0 player, iirc the explanation on resin was only 120 before is bc China had a policy/law where children / teens have limited screentime so they can focus on their studying which is kinda crazy btw
The chaotic KFC event where only CN players can get the special wings and freebies. Global players were kinda mad abt this coz of the special treatment 😂 so genshin made it available as a twitch event
Fischl having a timeout for several patches bc the CN Oz VA had to be replaced bc of his controversy.
The Unreconciled Stars event where every time you need to collect the rewards, it needs resin and only certain characters were buffed.
Every weekly bosses were 60 resin before and players complained that it needs to be lowered so we can do other stuff. Later on 1.5 patch, 30 resin cost on 3 weekly bosses was implemented
The latern rite webevent, everyone got pranked lol
The Kazuha banner one is kinda controversial too coz most genshin “meta” content creator then later regretted it coz the CN theorycrafters enjoyed playing him with other teams and he’s a must pull character

As an Indian and a lore lover, I didn't care much about the colors. I loved how the lore had many Indian concepts and culture. The music was beautiful and whenever I saw the food of my culture, I had a smile on my face. I love Sumeru and I love returning back when I have quests and commissions because being welcomed by familiar music and culture in a game that isn't developed by Indian creators, just shows how much research Genshin did.
I loved rhis video, what a time to be a genshin player T--T. Definitely have to add in the Chinese community's Wanderer dramaggedon, crazy stuff.
I remember when some of the Genshin fans were angry because of the Tears of Themis 1st Anniversary rewards. A single pull is 180 S-Chips, our pity is 100 pulls and we have 4 new cards coming out. We really need those rewards 😭
Missing Monagate from pre-Zhongligate Era and Missing Laterngate from missing the first Lantern Festival when the game released.
Monagate one of her constellation damage amplification applies only to herself, not to the team, Hoyo responded it was a text error, CN submitted fraud reports to China's version of BBB idk what out come came from it
and of course the worst aggregious scandal was Lanterngate.
Genshin released during the Chinese golden week, a holiday break including Mid Autumn and Chinese National day. The Latern Rite, is a event that suppose to be the in game Mid Autumn festival did not make it in to the release as there were bugs and it was just not ready at the time. The Chinese community was pretty upset at this and demanded an explanation.
Instead of explaining that the event wasn't ready, they said "Latern Rites is unrelated to real holidays, Teyvat is fictional world with no real life holidays." In response the Chinese community basically gutted them. After that Monagate happened, and Zhongligate happened and PR was just kind of bad overall.
And of course would've loved to hear your take on Wanderergate where Chinese players wanted Wanderer removed from the game. That's a whole rabbit hole I'd love to see you dig into.
so for Dehya, it stung three times as bad because she's arguably one of the most popular, if not THE most popular Sumeru character. Her design is top-tier (aside from being too pale), her personality is amazing, her voice actress did a STELLAR job voicing her, and her role in the Sumeru story was awesome.
Then Hoyo basically created her combat kit in such a way that it doesn't work with... basically most support characters, and the internal mechanics of elemental application just cause her skills to not work with most of the other characters at all. Of course she's usable in the overworld because every character is, but in any harder content she's almost useless in because of her kit issues as well as the fact that for a 5 star character, her base numbers are ATROCIOUS.
also the dumbest thing about the sonic vs genshin thing with the Hoyo 'buying votes' because they gave primogem rewards after both the nomination and the award win... is that there was NO prior notification of those rewards being a thing before the voting windows opened. it was LITERALLY an unexpected reward of Hoyo afterwards xD

as for the sumeru stuff, i was so happy to see sanskrit words everywhere and food from my country too. i didnt really care that they didnt make anyone dark skinned. idk. it was alright to me. i loved the all the sanskrit words used in locations and in npc names. now in hsr too, they're using sanskrit words.

I was there, the anniv drama was building for quite a while. General player frustration from QoL features lacking, the weapon banner being ABYSMALLY predatory, etc etc, and hoyo's radio silence. People were already somewhat peeved.
However what got it really started was the anniv giving only a mere 10 pull for limited banners. This was annoying enough, but what REALLY tipped the iceberg was the fact that they wanted people to do FREE ADVERTISING for the CHANCE of 100 primos. Artists, cosplayers, and animators alike were all enraged. The fandom's art creation is worth far FAR more than less than a SINGLE pull. So people submitted bad art on purpose, because hoyo was giving bad rewards for drawing it.
People discussed the unfair rewards on hoyo's site, and hoyo responded by deleting all criticisms, and some players even claim their accounts were banned. Since people were being censored on the hoyo site, they started spamming Qiqifallen in the discord in protest.
A few hoyo-supporter trolls who were annoyed made comments on the google play store, saying things like "I want everything free genshin bad game" which is not AT ALL what the angry fandom was complaining about at the time, showing that these comments were obviously the ""bootlickers."" However, a videogame news site picked up these few comments, and made an article stating that genshin players are review bombing genshin because of bad rewards!... Which then caused thousands of genshin haters to join in and attack google classroom and clash of clans, and bootlickers to further review bomb. A few of the artists also made bad reviews but back then, if you looked, it was overwhelmingly not the artists doing the review bombing. I remember lost pause (a youtuber) made a video about the alleged ""review bombing"" but there's not much actual evidence from that time aside from people who were actually there and checked the store.
As the drama started cooling down, people continued spamming Qiqifallen in the discord, moreso as a meme and fandom solidarity. Honestly by that point, people were just doing it for fun, it was just funny and harmless. The Qiqifallen spammers even largely kept their spam to the general chat by the end, letting people use all the other chats in the server for, well, chatting.
Until the discord started banning Qiqifallen, which only reignited the "censorship" rage.
maybe you haven't heard about it but there was (or still is) the scaramouche situation in which real cats got hurt :(

you forgot to mention the fact that during the anniversary the official genshin impact discord server was being spammed with qiqi stickers that that was the only thing you could see on most channels and the mods had to slow mode general chat for like 4hrs or something 😭😭 man that was such a funny time to be a genshin player
Zachary slayed being Tighnari had witty lines like in the Parade of Providence event saying "I'm not dead Cyno" and him being unable to speak in the discord calls in the monthly VA Among Us using text to speech robot voice to communicate could be the best VA Among us moment

Dehya's kit is so weird and i have troubles even understanding her issues but looks like she's getting some use in fontaine with lyney and underwater exploration, it could also be a part of an overarching thing with colored characters having mid kits tho this doesnt rly apply to cyno or kaeya (maybe candace too but she's just niche)
It's coming mostly from people who view high damage as the only viable way to play the game, so niche characters will be hated because they might not be able to 1 cycle a boss, like I main traveler and while I like hydro traveler I wish the burst was better

@@curtiseaston1711 damage isn't the issue. It's her bad uptime. Her E only lasts for 12s but the resistence to interruption it gives is actually only 9s. It's just very inconvenient for most rotations, so you still feel like bringing another protective support. But if you do, why need Dehya at all? I really want to use her with Liney but even C4 Yanfei's meme build feels more comfy
