The History of the Three Guyanas

  • There's a region in South America that seems awkward, out of its place, but quite interesting. This is a place where Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch and English speakers all meet, where the French and EU flags wave on polls, and where indigenous groups live side by side with African communities. I'm talking about the Guianas, the north-eastern chunk of South America. And we're going to explore it today.

    2:19 Dutch Guiana was never the name of Suriname. It was a collection of Dutch colonies: Berbice, Demerara, Pomeroon and Suriname. When the British took over the first three, they merged them into the colony of British Guiana. However Suriname was always the name of the country since its establishment. It was informally called Dutch Guiana, to distinguish it from the British, French, Portuguese and Spanish Guiana. See the link: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Surinam
    3:37 the first immigrants to come where the Dutch Farmers, then in 1853 the Chinese and Madeiran (Portugese) labor workers. Slavery ended in 1863 and in 1873 the first Indians came. In 1894 the first Javanese came and around that same period the Lebanese came. The Lebanese we're not workers, just merchants who came by them selves.
    There still are Amerindian people and don't forget 13.3% is mixed too.
    The Afro-Surinamese are divided in the Creoles, whose culture is a blend of the African, Dutch and Jewish culture. They came out of slavery. The Maroons still have their African roots and live largely in the interior of suriname.
    However you are part of the small group of people who really documented the history of Suriname the best. Many people never talk about the Javanese, Chinese, Lebanese and Europeans in my country. They don't know that there are two types of Afro Surinamese. So good job and thanks!

    Thank you for the commentary: it was informative and interesting and admittedly it is the first time that I have heard this clear and concise overview about the History of the Three Guyanas: originally spelled Guianas.. The latter name had its origin in Amerindian culture and was translated as 'the land of many waters'. Clearly you have researched this topic and have offered an overview about the origins of these areas. I trust that you will offer more information about these countries' historical development. Thanks.

What ship did these so called African Slaves came on? which port did they leave from Africa? Who are the people? When did all of this happened? I have yet to find the answers to those but I did find out that not all Black people are from Africa. The people that they say are African Slaves that started the plantation is incorrect. Who are the Portuguese? Who are the Dutch/ British/French? They're not White, dont believe the hype. If Every single White men and women in America trace their History it leads back to Indentured Servitudes. Native American/Aboriginals/Europeans were in the Plantations not Africans.

    My dad came to London from Guyana in the 60s & married my mum (a white English).....for years my brother, sister and I knew we looked different to others, only to later in life, embrace our mixed ethnicity and mix with all other races we meet. I’m going to visit Georgetown one day with my wife, who’s from a tiny village in Lincolnshire 🙂✈️⏰🙏

    One of the most diverse places in the world ? What should I say to my town of 20 000 people in switzerland called Renens ? We have about 210 different languages spoken daily... We have a little free library where you can give your family books so other families can get them for free and actually I think there s 216 languages books found in that library.

    Goes to show the duality of modern society. Colonialism led to many tragedies that indigenous people are still healing from today. And yet, it led to the cross-pollination of different peoples scattered throughout the world. In recent years we celebrate diversity while at the same time acknowledging that yes, our ancestors sometimes did terrible things to other people. It's all we can do to reconcile our human history.

    • @koumei1709

      We can't change the past. But we have to acknowledge what happened. The results of those actions we can still see today. The ethnic diversity of such places is, in my view, an incredible plus. Diversity brings in lots of ideas, and a flourishing society, if the people in charge can manage it correctly. But yes, you're right. the way we got here was through some truly terrible actions done by our ancestors.

    Yes. Why are there just 3 of them snd not 5? Why can't the part of Brazil which is in closer proximity to the Guyanas than to Brazil be a state named Portuguese Guyana. Or why can't they create a country out of a eastern strip of Venezuela (right next to the Guyanas) and call it Spanish Guiana? Why are those just 3 different countries when it could have been 5?

    • @AridChannelOfficialSG
      @AridChannelOfficialSG 3 роки тому

      The 2 guianas you mentioned were already part of a larger colony. The only reason why Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana (France) are there as I is is because they were the only small chunks of land they can find, as most were taken by the Spanish and Portuguese. The Spanish and Portuguese did not see the need to create separate viceroyalties or colonies for the Guianas since the viceroyalties containing the Spanish and Portuguese Guianas were sufficient in size and did not need to be further subdivided.
