Zak made a VERY valid point at the end of the video, if you want to go off grid, move to an offgrid property and be offgrid. it's great to start with a cabin with nothing, and put in your rain catchment, and your solar and build a little at a time, when you start with nothing, and build your way up, you truly appreciate everything, and realize how much you can live without. Living simply makes a happy life
In Australia 1 in 3 people have a solar system on their roof so 33% of people are subsidising the others power bills. The government is now charging people 1.2cents per kw/hr to feed energy INTO the grid. They used to give people 66 cents per kwhr and now they are charging them. The green dream has become a nightmare.
We live off grid for about 6 years now. Love it! We decided about 3 years ago to retire early and run our homestead. We couldn't do it if we worked a full-time job. I can say we have sacrificed a lot, but it is very rewarding. A lot of work😊
We live up above the snowline in the NW washington mountains. We've been off grid ( waaaay off grid) since 1969 and have lottsa solar and wind. Gennies. All home grown. No government scams. I have everything in my home the grid junkies have except a utillities bill. We're never in the dark cold or hungry. Also have Airconditioners. Nearest cell towers is 8 miles line of site on neighboring mountain. Ni negative footprint from energy. Also year round artresian spring. Land all paid for and no bills cept taxes. 160 acreas scaled down to 120. Grow n raise bout 80 percent of our food. ( But no coffee trees😢) At the home scale solar and wind power works 24/7 wind cause the sun don't shine at night but the wind blows. I'm 80 snd one of the original MotherEarth News staffers so been doing this a long time. Works fine. All systems built in redundancy. No black out potentials. Our only problem in rough weather is what to doo with all the excess power wind generators produce. City people have no life skils and are helpless parasites. Haha Dandahermit

It irritates me to no end when people are unreceptive to the fact there are safety difference between Lithium Ion, NMC, and LifePO4 batteries. Thanks for knowing the difference and informing others.
But then Zach over-generalized about solar installers all being invalid and bad, even though he read the *specific* problems with one company that went down. There *are* good solar companies that do a good job installing solar.

@@MC-.- Safest lithium based batteries currently available in the market at a reasonable price. Lithium Ion are still widely used, because they are cheaper than Lithium iron phosphate, but not enough to justify the fire hazard.
There are videos on UA-cam of guys shooting guns at and dropping LifePO4 batteries and they just died, they didn't burn up or catch fire.
@@FLPhotoCatcher I don't disagree, despite the predominate scammy care salesman tactics used by most, the main point he and I were emphasizing is DIYing a system is infinity cheaper and you learn so much by doing it.
I built my own systems, my home has a multi solar systems. My home has its own wind and solar, my shed has its own solar and my chicken coop has its own solar, all structures have their own water infrastructure as well.
Great lesson Zack! My wife and I moved onto 20 acres of raw land 3 years ago. 21 months in a camper before we moved into the house we built with our own hands. I installed the power throughout the house myself. We only now have our solar power panels so balanced (started from the get go in the camper) with our battery charge requirement and usage needs. Whole house, fridge, internet, lights, 110 outlets to all kinds of apliances, and so on, lithium iron, 3072 wh, and we did it ourselves. Our neighbor had a MASSIVE system installed by a city company, but we have not yet heard of his success. My whole system cost me less than $4,000😊
Me and my wife own a cleaning company. One of our contracts is a solar company. I am good friends with one of their engineers. He says exactly what you said Zach. Do it yourself the loans are a con, the installation costs are ridiculous etc etc.. etc..
I clean an office near a cell phone tower. And I wear a EMP cloth hat to help protect myself. I live in the country.
It's funny, when I met my husband 9 years ago I was renting a little old farm house. I had no TV, no AC, no central heat, no dishwasher , I had a hot plate and a toaster oven to cook. My house was cute and looked great but once people were there for awhile they'd start noticing these things. I was perfectly happy without all the extra stuff we have today! Now he has brought up several times we can solar for almost nothing, every time he brings it up I say NO! nothing is free, if it sounds to good to be true it is!
We purchased our solar generator from a mom and pop shop out of Tennessee called Get ready co. They’re homesteaders too. They said a solar generator is like a chicken. The chicken provides eggs, but you still need to feed the chicken, so those eggs technically aren’t free.

Chickens are the most numerous bird on the planet. They are wild in many place and are naturally good foragers. It's best to just let them forage and maybe supplement a little food. Even in winter they will forage a lot of their own food.
We bought ADT Solar. They are also going out of business.
After getting hit by a tornado May 25, it's been work trying to find someone to help full fill the warranty.
We are in the hole $40,000. This is our stupid tax.

i was quoted $30k for a grid tie system with no batteries. No thanks. not worth it. by the time its paid for itself the system will be outdated or broken

I have 60 amp and 30 amp MPPT charge controllers and a 300ah Ampere Time 12v battery to have power for a window AC after power outages. I`m on a fixed income and had to learn it myself. I also bought power stations for my freezer and dorm fridge, low wattage cookers, fans, WIFI and lights but I got great deals on them 3 & 4 years ago. I`m in Louisiana and without this stuff I`d be in big trouble. I`m disabled and have no car and I`m way out in the country far from stores with nobody to help me so I have to grow my own fresh produce like fruits, berries and vegetables too and make my own alcohol when I need a drink or I don`t have these things. It has been extremely difficult but I adapted and figured it out. My protein is canned fish I order.

I designed my own solar setup and I'm just a common old man homesteader. The sketchiest part was hauling up the panels up a ladder on my shoulders on a windy day. I have 20 used panels and plain old lead batteries. Way less than $3k in the whole setup. My $400 battery bank is still going strong after 5 years. Fancy batteries may last longer, but the cost is simply unreasonable for a common man. They don't last forever either. Don't be afraid of used panels either. After 20 yrs, panels still put out over 80% as new. I'll be long gone before they're used up.
Totally agree with one exception. LifePo4 batteries will outlive an AGM.
@Anamericanhomestead but not for $110 a piece. A single fancy battery costs as much as two of my whole battery banks. Times 4 batteries, that one time cost equals 80 years of my antique lead acid setup. I haven't seen any reasonable priced lithium anything yet. If I had to start with $5k batteries, I couldn't play in that sandbox. There are sweet if youve got it though.

And I second the DIY option. We all have friends in the homesteading community that paid thousands and thousands for something they could have built DIY for half or a third of installers prices.
It's doing things the wrong way. Homesteaders are supposed to do the hard work required to fundamentally understand everything they need for survival.

All joking aside, Patrick did a lot of research a good number of years ago and built our solar system bit by bit and we knew the best choice was NOT to be grid tied as that would be a huge mistake
We have 3 large corporations locally that had a total of 10 large wind tubines installed a couple of years ago. One turbine had a blade snap off due to a defect. So the company that owns the turbines had to stop all the turbines so they could inspect and repair them. The one turbine is still missing a blade after 5 months. A half hour South is a large wind farm and 1 turbine caught on fire last year. We'll over 10 years ago a local school had a turbine installed, company went bankrupt, turbine broke, and no other company was willing to fix it.
I inquired with a neighbor. His system feeds into the grid. I asked, "Do you still have power when the grid goes down?". The answer was, NO!!! All those panels on his roof and he doesn't get to use it!!!

Like many home owners in a city which by code need to comply with Solar panel rapid shutdown if grid is lost. Those with no battery backup lose solar panels on grid down while I use batteries to run through the night and keep my solar panels alive when you need them the most. Must design system to be code compliant on grid while taking care of your personal needs too .... like utilizing your Frigging Solar panels with grid being down.

Im hoping i didnt make a bad choice. I am a 66yr old single woman in central idaho. I have a small cottage, wood stove, chickens, garden, by a small river.
I have purchased 2 portable ecoflow delta max converters and 3 batteries. 1200 wtts of solar panels. Been building on it for over 3 yrs. It will not run 240 of course. But wanted to be able to keep freezers going. Havent used it much, learning about it. Not hooked up to power company. Did not want them to control me... ever.

We put solar on our last home. Was told that in winter we would be capable of producing 80% of our own power. Come to find out in the summer we only made about 60% . So we still had a power bill and also a $40k solar set up to pay for.
I live in the suburbs outside of Phoenix and contracted with solar install about 7-8 years ago. While, power seems to be fine and produces enough to not use grid, I’m still connected and pay a monthly fee which has gone up. My wife seems to not understand this when talking about homesteading and off-grid. By the way….the company is still in operation……..for now!
if you want to go off grid anytime can have the electric company to discount the power lines from your home and if you owe it outright they can't refuse...

If you have realistic expectations in regards to solar, it is fantastic! No AC, no microwave, no power hungry appliances, etc. Coffee pots take a lot of power! A French press makes a great cup of coffee! We even have a manual grinder for our coffee beans
My husband built our solar system in 2022. We are completely off grid (with a/c 😊 ). You are absolutely correct. No one should get solar unless they completely understand the system and how to troubleshoot. (Unless they have the $ to pay someone a part time salary to be on call for them.)

Exactly! Not for me. I hear about power outages but have yet to experience one. Sometimes the neighbors are without power for a couple days but I never know about it.

Would go completely off grid, and something they have now that they didn't have in 17, is the new Enpase grid tie inverters that can run on grid, and when power fails they can Island themselves and run as offgrid, no other company can do this. I have older enphase inverters, never had a problem, my system is warranted top to bottom 25yrs, is monitored by me, and the install company 24 o 7, Enphase is the leading, best solar world wide, this system will last me more than 40yrs, I'll be dead before that. Last thing I'd do different is install on the ground and not the roof, easier access to clean,maintain and don't have to remove to re roof. Which brings me to people saying, don't put on roof your just asking for leeks, the roof mounting system installed on my roof, it isn't possible to leak, just the way it's made, no point for failure. His comments about Titan solar,spot on they are the worst, but don't confuse them with the Titan solar generator, by Point zero energy, of portable solar generators, like Ecoflow, which is a high frequency piece of crap generator, the Titan is the only low frequency on the market. Am on-grid and already doing a lot off-grid-SunOven, wood cook stove, Amish laundry protocol, oil lamps. The more you can do without power, the better and the less rads as well. We are so addicted to our comforts or what we buy into as comforts. I am doing this homesteading by myself and am not electronically inclined, so it would be different (maybe) if there was someone handy that way here, but where’s the time to be good at EVERYTHING?! Can drive you crazy. Instead, am finding these thing give more heart to the place. BTW am looking for some acreage more like what you have. You have been quite an inspiration here!

Thank you for the warning and the advise. Our prayers are certainly with the family with 10 children. We're glad they're all okay. We have several new solar farms in our county. It's not going to work out long term... we're a swamp. They'll figure it out eventually what "drain tiles" mean to their buisness plan. So they're now trying to target the homeowners who aren't interested. It's not affordable. Interestingly, a guy who said he's with our local power company tried to access my neighbors land across the street. Happened this morning. He didn't notify the neighbors and I called a complaint into the power company. No ticket for any jobs on our road. There's probably an easement... but also bears and coyotes and bobcats. We said to him "the neighbors house is over there" and pointed him in the right direction... he went the other way... came back... did a u-turn in the neighbors driveway and never got out of his truck (said the neighbor we spoke with). Then he went back to another gated and posted entrance and went on the property! I heard whistling and called out my neighbors name... heard the chain on the fense rattle, and a truck door shut and that same truck backed out of the driveway! I got video... they have cameras. I filed a complaint. I'm not sure what kind of shenanigans are going on but you can bet we're going to find out. We're a small rural community of less than 300 people... we've had a local landlord and her husband murdered last year and broad daylight armed break-ins on the main street through town. We're paying attention out here... and no one should be accessing anyones gated off property without checking in with the homeowners first. They're investigating we'll see what comes of it.
We bought very basic solar panels and other stuff with it. We got them for "just in case," We have 1000watt. For SHTF. Nothing more.

I'd love to get solar, but super broke. If I could, I'd follow Will Prouse on UA-cam. I've already met two separate people where I live that followed his instructions and set up 7500 watt systems for around $7500, although it was before things got bad. Either way. It'd still be way cheaper than going with a company that'll charge around $75000 for solar.

First rule on homestead is batteries are outside in a completely separate shed and that has all the batteries etc in it. It's far enough away that if anything happens it's not close enough to burn the house down.
Even in the country there are cell phone towers. There was a piece of property in a pretty remote area I would have liked to own. The hill beside that property has long had a cell tower on it.
You can't trust many people. Most will say anything to make a sale. You find out the hard way after your money is gone.
I have also seen some evidence that solar power is 'dirty' power.

Overall this video was good. I know it is impossible to cover everything in a 21 minute video so what I am about to say is not a criticism of your video or the content. It is intended to add too and also maybe hear a different view point. We used to live in La Hunta Texas. This is just west of Fort Worth. There is a road that leads back to where we use to live called Midway. On that road are 2 large cell phone towers. We used to regularly observe 50 to 100 Buzzards perched on these towers, almost every day in the evening and they would not leave until morning. These perched all over these towers from the very top where the panels are to the very bottom. I do not know why they seem to be unaffected but they were not. This was day in and day out for months in the spring and in the fall. I was fully aware of the dangers being talked about by the alternative news. I am not saying that they are not dangerous but for some reason these birds were unaffected. I would also like to point out that Harbor Freight tool sells solar systems in store. I dont know anything about them but they do sell them. I would also agree with the fact that these solar panel grids and windmill farms are being put up every where. I dont know what the motivation is for them being put up in so many states but they are. I started driving a truck over the road this year and I have seen these massive fields being installed everywhere. Since January I have been to close to 40 states and I see them every where. The largest one is in California off of Hwy 10 coming out of Arizona. You can easily see it on google maps. Another very large one that is near completion, is right out side of Little Rock Arkansas going north on I40 towards Memphis. Largest windmill farms I have seen is North west of Oklahoma city going into Colorado. They number in the 10s of thousands. California has also destroyed the beatiful look of the mountains near San Bernadino. It looks awful to see all those windmills peppering the sides of those mountains. Few final notes: I have entered California on south and north side and the shocker is there are check points for all vehicles to enter California. Texas of all places has border check points that are at least 50 plus miles from the border and they force ever vehicle to go through them. Border guards are there with some very vicious looking German Shepherds sniffing all vehicles.This is on Hwy 10 going east out of El paso. Final note of all the cities I have been through El paso is one of the nicest, cleanes looking cities I have been through. Sorry for it being so long but thought this information may be something people might not know. Thank you Zack for the hard work you put into these videos.
Folks are so desensitized to so many things. You're absolutely right about anything electronic giving off stuff and you're absolutely right about electric lights causing headaches and a whole lot more. I gave up microwaves last year they're so gross and there's so many other ways to warm up and cook food
If it can be reasonably proven that the solar company made terms and conditions in a written contract that it couldn't keep, and THAT Fact can be interpolated ... then the solar company lacked capacity to make the contract in the first place; hence, invalid contract that is worthless.

My parents bought the “Jim Bakker generator” as I call it(PTL). It is basically an inverter with a solar panel. They donated way too much to get it and it even has a emp proof cover. My parents both died several years ago and I used the Jim Bakker generator camping until it eventually started over charging and I measured 300vdc on the output. It smoked my rv battery and almost caught on fire. I still use the 100 watt solar panel that came with it along with a $30 voltage regulator to charge my rv battery. Then there was all the survival food my parents bought from Jim…

Texas buy back plans. Unless you have batteries all your power comes off the grid and all your production goes on the grid. I get the same credit for all my production as I pay except all power taken off gets charged about $.05/KWH. So I end up with a small bill on one of the systems. A battery should reduce this cost and let me use my solar if the grid is down.

Question: over a year ago we bought component's to go solar : hybrid controller/inverter, some panels and a battery. It's from a company I can't find much on on the internet; Rubix, it's a lithium iron phosphate. Is it ok? If you know or should we expect it to blow up?
I have two solar systems in a residential area North Texas. 22 panels and a Solar Edge inverter each. It’s been working for the past three years. In Nov 2023 I called to ask about maybe installing batteries. No joy. It turns out that “ Wells Solar” an electric contractor tuned solar company for many years just disappeared. I’m still looking for information on warranty work when needed. Other than working on my CB boxes I can do wiring etc, but I’m 71 now and don’t do roofs. BTW, I’m looking for that seed company offer you made on a past video. Help. I’m a patreon member.

Hi Zack, I've been watching for many years but first comment/question ever posted. I've been on the fence about just getting enough solar panels to keep a couple of ecoflow DPs and extra batteries to be continually charged when needed-approximately 3500w of solar panels. I have used the 2 Delta pros to power my whole house (yes its small) including all appliances, heating/cooling. I am using it through a panel fed outlet (actually inlet) and an interlock on the panel so no back feed to grid. I really only have the internet and youtube to get knowledge from because I do a lot of preping and follow Torah most think I'm nuts. I really appreciate all the work and info you put into this for us. If you or anybody reading this have any advice for me about the solar or really anything it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I been wanting something but i dont understand it and not comfortable messing with it. I dont like to change an outlet out. TY this is imp bc ppl need to know. About 20 miles away, thought they were building a fema camp few yrs ago lol ended up being a solar farm. In a small town.
This is why I hadn't put up my solar panels because I want to know how I am able to maintain it etc. I got 2 of the lead acid deep cycle Gel type batteries. Not sure if better than the ion type. Cannot return as I've had them for quite awhile now.
It amazes me that the average personwill not take even a little time to learn somethign new. It's not that difficult and openes a whole new level of self sufficiency in the energy department. I started with a small trailer system and worked my way up to a small workshop from that. Now working on a larger 48V system but fully confident on what to do and how to do it. ALL of mine, will ultimately cost less than what the average person pays for these systems that don't even provide full self sufficiency.

If I could go off grid I would but we consume a lot of electricity. We can't afford our own power plant. Solar isn't all that viable here . Its cloudy a lot and the location just isn't suitable for it. Not a fan anyway. They Run ads on FB all the time we go on and Roast them in the comments.
Some people have some solar but it's more to knock down the Electric Rate because it's like the 2nd highest in the US and its not even that Reliable.
My neighbors all have Generacs so they don't even blink an eye when the power goes out,thry don't even notice. Last week our entire town went down when half of the power feed. That means that the power coming into Main panel was only 120 volts not 240. Weirdest thing ever.
I realize this may sound gruesome, but business going out of business, auction off their inventory, Just a Thought... send the company a request to purchase excess parts, mounting equipment, panels of course, and hardware... might be some deals to be had. Good Video
This is also the reason I declined two job offers not too long ago because it was going to be like this, selling and lying possibly. I don't believe in theft or lying and follow the Torah to the best of my ability. I went the first day and told them I can't do this, it's against my morals.
My Klein Tools battery was recalled due to fire hazard- Didn’t break my heart. I am on grid though in an area where service is inconsistent. I do individual solar lights and fans understanding that they have a lifespan and have manual options. I dont want the fuss and expense of a solar system - perhaps that will change in the future.🤷♀️

I can't justify the cost of them.
I can buy 4 sets of AGM batteries for the same cost as comparable lithium. And as long as you watch your depth of discharge on the AGM, the lifespan difference isn't long enough on the lithium to justify the added cost.
And the weight doesn't matter to me like it would on an RV / Boat or mobile system.
Hmm, if I buy 10kwh lithium, then I'd need 20kwh of gel to be comparable because I can only safely discharge gel 50 % safely, 60% would be ideal, so,4 sets of the AGM is 100 kwh over the life of 10 kwh of lithium, I fail to see your savings

Depth of discharge for lithium is recommended not to exceed 80%.
Max depth of discharge on AGM is not to exceed 50%. (Although newer studies show that AGM's taken to 80% depth of discharge only lose about 5% of their total Amp hours over their lifespan)
But using conventional numbers, to equal them out you need about 30% more amp hours of AGM over lithium.
For my system I have 12 - 200amp 12V AGM batteries. They cost about $320 each. So my battery cost is $3840.
To buy a 200amp 12V Lithium iron Phosphate from the same brand is $790 each. I would need 8 of them for a total battery cost of $6320.
So already you are paying nearly double.
If you take in the newer research about depth of discharge, you would need 10 lithium to match the AGM and your cost would be $7900.
Now let's talk about life span. The AGM's can reliably last about 7-10 years if you control the depth of discharge and do not overdrain them.
The average lifespan for the lithium batteries is also about 7-9 years with the main point of failure being the internal BMS.
And for charging.
Lithium batteries do not charge below 32F.
The BMS shuts them off.
AGM batteries can continue to charge down to -15F (albeit at a slower charge rate)
So if you live in a cold climate with the batteries in unconditioned space, lithium is not your best choice.
So for lithium, you are paying double (or more) for the same power, over the same lifespan and the only benefit is the weight.
If you need a light weight battery, then buy lithium.
If you have limited space and need a smaller battery pack, buy lithium.
If you are putting them in a house or cabin where you have plenty of space and they are never being moved, AGM is just the better option.
I just bought a house with on-grid solar panels. Cheap electric until there is no longer electric...that is what I prepare for.
Zachary, why do they call them generators when they are just batteries? You charge them up and use what is stored in them. They do not generate power. Misleading in my book.
They generate power from solar. No gas needed. The sun is free.

Lithium is the only way, those that say gel is cheaper, it's simple math, you can use 100% of lithium power, the full battery, you can only safely use 50% of gel stored power without damage. So 10kwh lithium, is equal to 20kwh gel,and you will replace gel almost 3 times in the life of lithium, so it cost more up front, but is cheaper and and no maintenance in the long run. JM2C

All true, signature solar is your best start to buy,99% of people can't change a light switch,so wiring solar, yea might be the cause of the fires,having said that, I own solar, grid tied as he mentioned,and yes if the power goes out so does my solar, but that's because I didn't opt for battery backup, and having said that, if power went down in shtf, I could and would simply rewire my system to run off grid, it's not hard or expensive. I can tell you from first hand experience you will get more from your panels by running Enphase inverters, there new inverters are the only in the world that can grid tie, and in a power outage can disconnect from the grid and form there own island ie become off grid and keep running without batteries. I have the older Enphase inverters that cannot do it but they are by far the best world wide guaranteed 25 yrs. I've had mine since 17 and never had a problem, you can monitor them 24/7 on phone or tablet in real time. A small 4.8 kwh system produces 27,000 watts a day, this system has consistently made 5.5 million watts every yr since I've had it and thats in Virginia, it aint sunny everyday. But I will say you get what you pay for, and learning before you buy will save you in the long run. My system is warranted top to bottom for 25 yrs, solar panels also, with the added bonus if they degrade more than 3% of there rated output they must replace, installed by Aapco, a world wide company. I personally hope Titan solar gets what they deserve, not to be confused with Titan solar generator, by Point Zero Energy, unlike Ecoflow trash they are the only low frequency solar generator on the market

I stayed with agm deep cycle 100ah they are not as efficient but safe. Lithium ion phosphate. I will look I to it.
That should be Lithium IRON Phosphate. Just look for LiFePO4 batteries. ✌
Zach, Where is a good place to start on learning how to set up a home solar system? I would like to know and research it, but don't really know where to start. Got an recommendations on books, or other thing for someone to self educate themselves? I am an avid DIY guy, and would rather do it myself anyway, even if there was a reputable company.

Why is yours more sustainable than anybody else's? Solar, I'm talking about. I have a transfer switch. That disconnects me from the grid.
Because unless you do it yourself, its going to cost way way more and it won't be any sort of ROI for you long term.
@@AnamericanhomesteadNot exactly true, mine was installed and I've made my investment back in10 yrs.But it is absolutely better to install yourself, that saves 1/2 the cost or more, having said that, most can't change a light switch, so installing solar on there own could be the cause of half the fires. I'm pretty darn good at almost anything, and I could have done 85 percent of the work on my system myself, 15% of that was way above my electrical ability, and I wired my 1500 sq ft basement into the main panel myself, but 10% of the solar system has to be done by a qualified electrician to be code compliant and legal, grid tied system, yes true in grid down the solar doesn't work, but that's because I didn't do battery backup, not a problem in shtf, I can bypass the inverters to make it a offgrid system, that I can do. But Enphase now has micro inverters that can run without the grid, ie island, off grid automatic no batteries needed, mine are Enphase but the older ones that cannot, they are the only ones that can do it, and Enphase is hands down the best world wide. If I move to off grid property I will bring my system with me. For a 4.8 kw solar system this system has consistently made 5.5 million watts every yr since 2017 install, and that's in Virginia, it ain't always sunny here

If I had the money to jump out of where I'm at I'd be doing it AND buying the perfect pickler. I broke my foot and have to wait to start this new job. So I plan on these things but if I were to move my family of 7 and just start walking we would die or the govt would take my kids and put me in jail or something. Or a homesteader would shoot us passing through to grab 7 ears of corn because we are starving.
