I was looking through the comments and a lot of people said that they are deaf and there were no, or very bad captions. So I typed out what the reporter said so that everyone can watch the video and know what she is saying. "Whats new at one Starbucks store in Washington DC is not whats on the menu, but how customers order it. Known as the signing store it's the chains first first in the United States to cater to the Deaf and hearing impaired. (they should have said hard of hearing) They hired people fluent in American Sign Language and in a statement said that 'We think this store celebrates the culture of human connection on a deep level'. Starbucks first signing store opened in Malaysia in 2016. At the new location baristas wear ASL embroidered aprons and a 'I sign' pin, there is also digital displays and notepads and ordering devices with two way keyboards to ease communication. Starbucks says 'It's all to make their stores more inclusive, and to bring people of all backgrounds who speak different languages together even just over a cup of coffee."
Not every person who signs is Deaf. I am hearing impaired and learning sign language as a second language. Notice the titles says "For Deaf AND Hearing Impaired Customers". Stop being so sensitive!
The point isnt that they didnt include hard of hearing people, the term "hearing impaired" is offensive in the deaf community.-A currently HoH/ future deaf person
@@blueturtle3623 if a deaf person told me they did not want to be called that then i wouldn't and in general i dont. but I dont see how it is offensive. they have an impairment and they overcome it and live just like any hearing people that is AMAZING! it IS harder to live a normal life when you are deaf, and I dont think WORKING HARD is somthing to be ashamed of. thast AMAZING
Im the same way. My mom took a couple intro to asl classes a few years ago and used switched at birth to practice and i had so much fun with it i decided to learn more and pursue it as a major next semester in college. Although they're taking it off of netflix in may if thats where you are watching it

It's great to have a Starbucks Signing coffee shop in Washington DC. Hopefully all Starbucks locations will do sign language for the deaf & hard of hearing.

as someone who recently went completely deaf in one ear and almost in the other, this is amazing (im currently learning sign and how to read lips)
I'm losing my hearing now,. Got to learn sign language too.
I love this. It warms my heart... and I'm not even deaf.

this is underrated. i am not deaf but. thanks
1st sign language Starbucks was in Malaysia!.. that’s my home country!.. fantastic!..
We don't need a separate store. Why not train some of your staff in 'normal' Stores?

@@jubileeYAVEL That's just the thing, it isn't an impairment. It's just a cultural thing, like "people of color" vs. "colored people" you know?
I'm hearing and have been learning ASL for a year now because of the tv show "Switched At Birth" I hope to become an interpreter some day!
If you keep practicing and practicing, you will.

Yet to see anything like this in the UK but would love to visit a place like this in the UK
please replace "hearing-impaired" with "hard of hearing" i see you need to do this now
Ira Rothenberg well there are other disorders that are counted in hearing impaired that is not counted as hard of hearing. Like APD for example
I was told this by my prof who’s deaf.
He flat out just said “just say deaf or hard of hearing”

can you caption this video? the youtube auto generated ones aren't all correct
I love that you made a video about this however, the term "hearing impaired" is offensive.
@Haverland -- It's the word of choice among the hearing impaired whom I know. (Do you have a better suggestion?)

No it's not. Its what they are called. My daughter is visually impaired and that's what we say.

Why is it offensive? Ive heard it said a lot and that its offensive too but ive never known why. Was it used derogatorily?

Replace “hearing impaired” with d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or just deaf. “Hearing impaired” is offensive and outdated. Also, no captions? Really?
