    Thanks for putting this together. I love your important work to help people with your organization.
    For the v2 inner and space, I expect if you tighten the inner peak buckles more to lift the inner height at the two peaks you would find an improvement. The v2 inner is taller, so it should be adjusted closer to the fly at the two peaks to give more headroom and pull the sidewalls tighter/wider. If the inner peak heights are set similar to the v1, then yeah there the sidewalls will be looser and not pulled wider plus no gain in headroom. With the walls tight, the inner width at the height of the door toggles should be quite a bit wider (23" vs 18") even without staking out the side panel guylines.
    Pulling the inner tighter at the peaks lifts the sides of the floor to make the floor narrower but more headroom. So for your preferences, pulling the inner as high as possible would give that narrower floor with taller sidewalls you prefer and should have quite a bit more headroom/shoulder room. The v1 inner is shorter so it will more naturally have a narrow floor with taller sidewalls, whereas the v2 inner is taller so it has to be adjusted tighter at the peaks to give that effect.

      Dan, thanks for reply! Your dedication to your customers is just one more reason as to why your tents-in our opinion (and many others)-outshine the rest. We had both straps pulled up all the way. The V2 albiet slightly (1/2") less. In the summer we pitch the entire tent slightly higher allowing for improved ventiation and assuring headroom is never an issue. For those new to the X-mid tents: the clever design of this tent is its flexibility and the ability to make minor adjustments to the pitch depending on the enrivonment and terrian you're camping in.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 2 роки тому +6

      @@wildernessmenistry Ahh that makes sense....commonly with the v1 people will loosen the straps all the way to get more floor width, but then the headroom suffers. Indeed if you have your v1 pulled up all the way and don't mind that narrower floor then it will have better headroom similar to the v2. The main thing with the v2 is that it is taller so you can have the headroom and the wider floor without having to pick one. But in your case you don't prefer the wider floor so yeah no real advantage there.

    Owning both v1 and v2, what I love most about v2 is the dark inner tent floor. This makes it MUCH easier to figure out where the inside and outside is on the tent when you're rushing to lay it out and get it pitched before the rain falls. I used the v2 for 13 days straight last summer and was surprised at how often I appreciated this feature. I'm a v2 fan for sure.

    Thanks for your helpful review. It is nice to see using the same pad that I use. I am setting my first pitch today of the x-mid 1 V2 . Haha 😄 . Also good to hear from Dan on some variations. Being a taller backpacker (6"2) 1 man tents have been to tight. I was shown some major grace from Kaviso Outdoors to even have had the opportunity to buy this tent ( I am not very tech savvy or quick on the click ) and am so thankful. Great comparison! I've got the V1 too and it's nice to get a better look at what I'm missing or in this case, not missing with the V2. Though mine was also among the first ever batch to ship which had an issue with the grommets where the trekking pole tips go being too wide for some pole tips and thus putting too much tension on the fabric on the other side and causing a small tear on the outer fabric at the peaks. Easily fixed though with a small patch and modifying the grommets with some narrower rubber grommets inserted into the original grommets.

    Appreciate the honest review, BUT that's not what I wanted to hear. I have the XMID1 and ordered the new and improved Xmid1 like you. On paper all of the improvements sounded great. Did you find that the pitch was tighter for version2? They apparently changed the pattern and added a slight catenary cut to help increase the tightness of the pitch.

    • @wildernessmenistry
      @wildernessmenistry  2 роки тому

      Hi David, there were a few other "improvements" (like the catenary cut that you mentioned) but we tried to cover the larger and most noticable changes. To answer your question, no I did not notice a significant change (if any) in pitch. However, the interior netting did seems sloppier to me if the side guy outs aren't utilized. The V2 is still a great tent! A quick summary could be, "if you have the original X-Mid and you're not a large guy there's really no "need" to upgrade to the second generation X-Mid." I don't think you'll be disappointed in either one.

    One recommendation for future comparisons...I would not flip flop the measurements/data back and forth on either side of the screen. Interesting comparison especially the vent comments. Note that the original 2p had the vent on the long axis while all the 1p v1, the 1p v2, and the 2p Pro have the vent on the short axis. The problem with the vent on the long axis is it's harder to get to from the inside. The 1p v1 fixed that by putting the vent on the door side or short axis. Then the new 1p v2 some how got the zipper too far up as you noted diminished the vent size and function. Did you notice that the 2p Pro has the vent changed back to the 1p v1 style. It will be interesting to see how it is implemented on the 1p Pro; my guess is back to the way it was on 1p v1 style. Thanks for the comparison it was interesting, wonder if there will be a 1p v3 to return to the better vent style.

      It would be nice if the 1P Pro has a vent similar to the 1P V1. We had the opportunity to test out the 2P (not Pro). While it was a bit more fiddly to set up since we were used to the 1P we can see where the 1P V2 got many of its new features from.

    So the changes is catenary cut does not seem to give to give very noticeable differences? After using the 1P version for 10+ day hikes at wind exposed locations it felt that optimizing the catenary cut could further offload the corner stakes when it is windy. The upward force on the corner stakes, that is heavily relied on, is the weakest link for me in a still awesome tent.

    • @wildernessmenistry
      @wildernessmenistry  2 роки тому

      This video is just an initial comparison of the two and not a complete in-depth testing of the V2 tent. We agree the catenary cuts are a useful improvement. However, from an initial pitch standpoint we didn't notice pitching any easier or tighter. From our experience with the V1, once you learn how to pitch the tent it's easy to make subtle changes to achieve a perfect pitch. In regards to high wind, we only had one stake pull out in a years time and that was on a windy, exposed mountain top in shallow soil. We found it very interesting that the tent remained standing with three out of the four stakes remaining.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 2 роки тому +1

      @@bobsmyuncle4470 The weight of the X-Mid 1 has varied over time. The original generation was spec'd at 28oz for just the fly and inner but the first batch in 2019 came out a bit heavier than spec at closer to 29oz. That's probably what you have, since that is about 31.7oz with the 8 stakes (2.3oz), stuff sacks (0.5oz) included.
      Since then we worked to get it down with small refinements over time, so the tent slowly dropped to about 27.0-27.5oz by 2021. The v1 shown in this video is about the lightest one I've ever seen, since it is 27.3oz in the stuff sack (0.5oz) so apparently just 26.8oz for the tent itself, which is the second lightest weight I've seen reported.
      The v2 we spec at 27.9oz which is accurate with the reported weights thus far. Here, we see the v2 at 28.3oz in the stuff sack (0.5oz) so presumably right on spec at 27.8oz without the stuff sack.
      So the v2 is spec'd at 28oz and really is 28oz, while the v1 was also spec'd at 28oz but over the years varied from 27-29oz.

    • @wildernessmenistry
      @wildernessmenistry  2 роки тому +2

      @@durstongear We didn't mention that the V1 in this video has little tiny rubber grommets (from an auto parts store) that fit into the metal rings where the trekking pole tips go. We made this modification after reading early reports that trekking poles with longer carbide tips would press on the fly and possibly cause issues. In an abundance of caution (and a few extra grams) we added these tiny grommets. We were curious if the V2 metal grommets had been changed but didn't see any noticible difference in size. Again, our trekking poles never had an issue with the tips causing any issues but we felt it's better safe than sorry especially seeing how hard it is to get one of these tents!

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 2 роки тому +2

      @@wildernessmenistry Originally in 2019 the grommets didn't have any webbing on top of them. It was just the grommet and then the black fly fabric. That normally worked fine but some long styles of tips could protrude too far, so for 2020 we added webbing on top of the grommet. Your v1 looks to be a 2020-2021 model that has that webbing, so the v2 is the same as that.
      This webbing has almost entirely solved the problem, but we have still gotten 1 or 2 reports of pole tip damage so for our next batch in mid 2022 we are using a thick webbing here instead of lighter webbing which should solve that last 0.01% of cases. So the risk is much lower in both your tents compared to a 2019 one, but there can still be a little risk depending on what poles you have and the grommets can be a reasonable precaution.
