Hi Jay, now I can understand what you meant about sailboat: a boat without sail anymore and you fixed very clever the Fin to the rudder.

I actually do have the sail/rigging...but didn't take it out for this test. I'm thinking I'll be using the boost fin and the sail in an either/or mode....

Yeah overheated. There is a Bms that shuts off the battery and to reset it you need to plug-in to the power.
If you use it for 10 minutes than wait a little and then use again and wait a little. Or use the lightest mode.
The sailboat is heavy so it heats a little more.

I can concurr that this happens to me too.. and I have 2 of them with the same behaviour, battery still reports about 45% when it overheats and shuts down, and then you are stuck out and need to paddle back. Quite inconvenient if you ask me.

Thanks for the confirmation. They have since come out with a "high capacity battery" version designed specifically for stand up paddleboard use (or extra long surfing sessions), but of course it costs more. Overall I still think it's a good solution for quick bursts when surfing, or a reasonable amount of time when paddleboarding, but the battery life is a limitation people need to understand when they purchase it.

@@summetjhi, are you refering to the long distance fin that is not released yet or did they updated the old fin with a new battery generation?

From my understanding you can set a percent boost in the app, was it set to 100% boost and running continuously before it overheated at 18 min and 14 min? Thanks in advance. Thinking of getting it for my wife's SUP.

No, I was using the highest power SUP (Stand up paddle board) setting, not the Boost setting for surfing

My question is…why use some weird proprietary on n off like a magic screwdriver..this is designed to put a finger in a dark place when you’re out n about. Why? Why? 😭

It's just a magnet, you can use any magnet to turn it on/off, they just provide one on the end of the screwdriver. The reason is to have a perfectly waterproof switch. I've heard of a lot of surfers sewing rare earth magnets into the wristband of the remote control unit.

Seems like a bad design. No connection in water? Requires separate device to power on off? Overheats even when submerged? 10 to 15 min before it requires an ac charger to reset? None of that is conducive to outdoor watersports

It's designed for intermittent use on a surfboard, so I can't fault the minimal battery life. (They have actually come out with a long-range version with twice the battery for stand up paddle board usage.) The remote control works fine underwater unless you have a carbon fiber surfboard that blocks the signal, it's only the companion configuration app that needs Bluetooth connectivity out of the water.
