  • What does that Nova Scotia massacre, and the RCMP’s response in the initial hours and months since, say about systemic problems inside the force?
Dawna Friesen sits down with Garry Clement, one of the leading authorities on policing in this country, for The New Reality. He says persistent problems inside the Mounties - including at the leadership level - are putting communities across Canada in peril.

They won't find satisfaction through political correctness. Respect has always had to be earned. The cancel culture coolaid crowd cares not wether you are 'woke' or not. Politician's should mind their own business and allow the police to do their job according to the laws and constitution.

Political correctness is how they killed their brand.... People wanted to join the RCMP because they were seen as hiring the best and being the best. When you don't do that, people realize the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes and aren't going to make a life of sacrifice living in hell holes to wear a red uniform that nobody respects. That is especially the case when the leadership is weak and the work environment toxic. They killed their band and they have themselves to blame.

The big problem with the RCMP is that they have NO Leadership. For the past 15 to 20 yrs the RCMP promoted people that had no experience in supervising, no real police experience. Those that were selected for promotion were YES PERSON'S. The word Team has been replaced by "I, ME, MYSELF". Before promotions were based on experience in the Field that you where looking to be promoted in. Along with General Knowledge of Police Work.
Now that the wrong people are in charge because of Nepotism . They have NO IDEA what to do. They were too busy brown nosing, and have no idea what is ACTUALLY needed for Policing.
Of course Media has done it's Job at Tearing Down the RCMP. Polititians read 2 things Polls, and Media.

    • @mirandeful
      @mirandeful 2 місяці тому

This has nothing to do with PM Trudeau or any other PM. It has to do with the unaccountability of the Commissioner, among, other issues. These issues exist prior to Justin Trudeau's birth. The RCMP lost numerous of its members due to the very poor management of its resources and management at large. There is no real accountability. I was a regular member of the RCMP for several years and ended up leaving because of a very toxic work environment and very incompetent and biased management, from top to bottom. I don't believe current politics have anything to do with these issues.

@@davidtrojanowski1861 I've always wondered why Canada doesn't adopt an American way of the policing structure. The RCMP acts as both traffic/provincial police as well as being a federal branch that is equivalent to the FBI.
What I mean by a US policing system is adding provincial and territorial police to take care of outer municipal issues, essentially State Troopers. Every state in the US have State Troopers, meanwhile the FBI takes care of most federal issues (I say most because the US have alot of federal agencies that take care of different duties). I believe the RCMP should act as a federal agency much like the FBI and Canada should add more provincial policing.
Ontario and Quebec have their own provincial police departments, and if issues require federal oversight, the RCMP would step in. Provincial police already exist, why not add more?

I want to believe that there’s a governing body that actually looks after the welfare of the people & who have our best interests at heart, but that’s getting harder & harder. There is so much corruption & ideology that these officers need to adopt, forcing them to conform to ineffective methods that clearly have not gotten them the results that they want. If “lack of funding” is the issue, they should try to improve that, & perhaps even consider letting an independent agency evaluate what’s working (& what is not), not-so-much for “reputations-sake”, but rather from the standpoint of becoming a stronger, better, more effective organization that Canadians can be proud of.

I agree with a lot of things being discussed and some changes are long over due. However, change isn't always good and in my opinion the RCMP moved away from things that worked and embraced things that didn't and aren't working. The RCMP can't be everything to all people so they need to stop pleasing everyone. RCMP has embraced a victimhood mentality both from it's very own members and the public. Instead of trying to make a the RCMP better through training and adopting hiring policies focused on ability, integrity and apptitude the RCMP plays identity politics. They hire leaders to conform to social presuures instead of ability. the cater to every special interest group that has an axe to grind and there are plenty. They spend more time and emphasis requiring their members to take madatory diversity courses, explaining microaggressions and racial issues than courses focusing on tactics and investigations. The RCMP needs to focus on getting and keeping good members, training these members and distance themselves from the social pandering. The other issue is the media. they have also changed. Media is not the friend of the police so I understand some reluctance to share anything with them as it will be distorted and twisted to fill an agenda, media is not after the truth, they are after the next big "gotcha". However, I think the RCMP should be more open to what is going on. I have watched some good media releases from police chiefs in both Canada and the United States and they typically give out the details, at the same time they typically don't take nonsense from the media when they try to manipulate a narrative.

One of them marched with me for mens rights for children. Now we have all retired, they with over thirty years service each. We are all very near our end now. All three of them have only one wish left in life. They all wish they could erase their history with the RCMP completely. They all say its the most disgracfull organization on the planet today. From the contact I've had with the RCMP over the last few years, which is extremely little, I would have to agree. however anything they ever told me I would consider it gospel anyway as I have never met three more honorable men in my life. I agree with everything your friends have to say. My father was a very honorable member, who died while serving in 1995. He had 29 years in and was a Staff Sgt. Being an anglo caucasian male, I had been shut out for years in trying to join and got my chance in 2002. I went to Depot and did extremely well. But, I didn't get along with the trouble makers who were always trying to either pit people against each other or have the group turn against someone. I had been quite popular so that moment came for them when I was asked to fight a female in a boxing style match. When I knocked her down she tore ligaments in her knee and I became the bad guy. What happened was textbook style mobbing which was the most stressful thing you will ever go through. It was worse than watching my father die. I was ostracized, judged more harshly and set up to fail at every turn. The wagons were circled and the most malicious lies and aspersions were cast upon me. I had been the strongest in my troop, had the highest grades, never failed a scenario but when I complained it fell on deaf ears. But, it was even worse than that because there is strength in numbers and my facilitators refused to do anything to help me labeling it a "personality conflict". Even when they found out the truth when I was my way out the door because of stress and fatigue, they refused to punish the people who led this campaign against me because it would have made them look bad. Personal accountability and leadership is almost non existent. These two corporals I had, made it to the highest levels of the organization. I was told I could reapply and absolutely refused on the grounds that they refuse to deal with toxic work places and willingly hire the most dishonorable types of people. Ten percent of the outfit are the most amazing and wonderful people you could ever meet who have your back. Forty percent are good people, who won't join the mob, but won't stick up for you either. The other 40% are weak minded and will join a malicious mob and 10% of the force is rotten to core and are less honorable than people rotting in prison.
I wish I could erase my "history", which is the worst kinds of memories. I have a feeling your friends spent alot of time around the bottom 10%....

The RCMP among many networked citizens, are involved in legal abuse, gang-stalking, community mobbing, false flagging, framing and entrapment, contriving and or destroying evidence, human trafficking, exploitation and the list continues.
Even now I am being bullied and harassed by gang-stalkers from my past and present. My wife and I moved to Cranbrook about 6 years ago. First we were funneled into the Lakeview lodge in Cranbrook $$$. My stalkers from back east, followed me here. Some even beat me here, which makes me question ingeniously thought out funneling tactics. Then since being here, my computer has been hacked. Odd people moving in and out of the buildings around me. People following me in stores. Police lipping stuff to me when they pass by and point at me. Improper investigations during what appeared to be possible entrapment from an underage tenant. The list seriously goes on. They even park next to me when I go to the grocery store, on my hikes, biking. Sometimes, it's even an off duty officer's vehicle, which I recognize because I'm friggin Batman. They will even follow me into stores. They make it look as if they are slandering me in plain site, in order to get a reaction from their street theater routines.

I’m always amazed at the number of armchair quarterbacks that are out there. Particularly those in the media. The majority of these people have absolutely no clue what it takes to be a police officer or a member of the RCMP for that matter. They wouldn’t last 5 minutes doing the job I used to do. We used to jokingly referred to ourselves as the McDonald’s of policing because we were expected to be everything to everybody and to do it for cheaper. When I first started we had great benefits, our salaries were similar to the nearby non RCMP police departments, etc. but over the years that changed greatly. Yet there are still a lot of members willing to work long hours, 24/7 while most people get to sleep through the night and spend Stat holidays with their families. There are a lot of great, hardworking members in the RCMP and I’m really tired of hearing them get criticized.
You’ll notice that the majority of the tragedies you reported on have occurred in small detachment areas, areas that are typically policed by a very small # of members - many of whom have had very.little, if any, experience dealing with those types of situations. Why should they be crucified for not doing a perfect investigation in an unfamiliar, dynamic situation? Do you honestly think that those members didn’t want to catch the bad guy at the earliest possible opportunity? Do you think those members were at Tim’s eating doughnuts while that maniac was driving around killing people? It’s easy to criticize, but much harder to do the real work. Do the RCMP a favour and don’t expect them do perform so many varied duties in so many locations within Canada. You might be pleasantly surprised.

KG - you’re a perfect example of someone who bases a global opinion on one example. Who can’t name someone that is a waste of skin? Regardless of whatever profession that rounder is in. I know doctors, lawyers, judges, accountants, fast food service workers, etc. that all fit the bill/situation you’ve described. Are you condemning all of the individuals in those professions based upon your very limited experience? I would like to think not.
R: I have read a fair # of the publications you have mentioned and I agree with you that the RCMP has its share of issues. My point however was that there are a lot.of dedicated, hardworking members working in the Force and that it’s unfair to continue dumping on all of those members for what others have done. Every occupation has its share of lazy, useless workers - you just don’t hear about them because isn’t newsworthy. Part of my issue was also that it’s unfair to expect individuals (typically junior members) to perform a task that they’ve likely never been trained to do or likely have had minimal practical experience doing. This isn’t the fault of the “boots on the ground” - it’s got to do with the McDonalds of policing comment I made in my previous post.
It’s very easy to criticize from the safety of a living room chair in one’s “jammies” - it’s another thing to get off your butt and try to fix the things that need attention. I have no issues with getting rid of the “deadwood” in the RCMP and this is one of the reasons I worked in a Professional Responsibility Unit at one point in my career. I do, however, have a problem with people making over reaching generalizations that dump on an entire group based on the opinions of others that typically have an “axe to grind”.

@N Greetings. I have no problem with criticism when it’s justified but you clearly missed the points I made in both posts - specifically about the news media dumping on the RCMP as a whole and the fact that the many good members of the Force do not deserve it. I clearly stated that the RCMP has its share of issues and that I have no problem with getting rid of the problem children within the Force. In fact, nobody hates bad cops more than good cops. Clearly you felt slighted when my points were directed to the global news media that continue to only post, print, broadcast, whatever, the “not so complementary” things the RCMP does, but rarely if ever mentions all the good work they do and the sacrifices it’s members make so that the general public can sleep soundly at night. As I also stated it’s easy to be a critic when someone has the benefit of hindsight and comfort - not so easy when you have split seconds to make life altering decisions in the middle of the night.
Being book smart does not necessarily give someone the ability to render an informed opinion about a subject because “until you’ve walked a mile in my shoes” they’re missing a big part of the puzzle. You’re definitely entitled to your opinion but if you actually read what I wrote perhaps you’re the one who doesn’t take criticism well. Regardless, enjoy your bliss. Hope you never need the services of the organization you have obvious disdain for. But if you ever do I truly hope you get one of the good ones which, in case it isn’t abundantly clear yet, are the majority not the exception to the rule. No mocking involved.

This type of police should be abolished. Long time we know there are bad apples in there, by now, if not rotten all might have mould. They are not underpaid. See how much they earn. They have guaranteed to earn two millions dollars during their career. On top they get a big beautiful piece of land. The idea of being a type of FBI should not be considered. We have seen what they have done in the past, imagine as fbi!

Knowing a few cops and being a personal reference for a couple, affirmative action and political correctness has ruined all police forces. The problem with 1-2% of the police force has caused so many internal issues. RCMP cannot (or choose not to) enforce laws with indigenous issues, due process on known criminals is way over the top, people are hired which cannot drive, and mentally not able to manage a person unless there’s 3 or more of them. Like all government departments the best is not being promoted, but with their gender identity, and I’m not talking about make/female. Now they are being asked to arrest and detain what were perfect citizens prior to 2020. Fines are given to decent people. Until recently only criminals would be the only ones hating on police, now BLM, pastors and church goers , journalists, family gatherers all have issues with the “policing” of its citizens. Police loose more lives due to suicides than work related to murder, because these issues are overburdening them. This news feed is also directly criticizing the police.

@@davebrown5124 as my friend would say, laws are for law abiding citizens. People who break the law will continue without caring for them. Many have quit as they don’t like the direction the Police is headed. The Ottawa police chief who just quit was disliked by Toronto policemen. He was hired based on ethnicity. Sanders in Toronto was hired based on merit and was loved by his fellow coworkers. This is another problem governments have internally. The same problem is at the LCBO, School boards, corrections and crown corporations! The best person is not hired!

There used to be a time when the news was seen as interested in making things work instead of tearing them down. The RCMP might have problems but one of them in that case was the public holding back information and the legal system that protected the time bomb that went off.

The government needs to reform many things in regards to public security. First create a border patrol division in the CBSA so that RCMP officers can go back to their "regular" duties. Create a "secret service" type of agency that focuses on protection of the Premier and visiting dignitaries... freeing up again more rcmp officers and finally like the gentleman proposed: step away from municipal and provincial policing.

The public image of the RCMP is so tarnished that restoration may not be possible. I first witnessed the rot in 1976 during a trial where I was called as a witness. After my testimony I was allowed to observe the balance of the trial. I watched a defense lawyer trap an RCMP officer while the officer was testifying...the Mountie was caught lying on the stand. Shocking. The magistrate stopped the trial, dismissed the charge, and advised the officer that he must appear before the magistrate in a closed hearing the following day. Perjury. Wow.
