This whole album is insanely good. One of the best of this era of metalcore. Howard was a monster, Adam D phenomenal. Their live shows were something else. Seen them every time they came down here to Australia.
I love that you guys checked this out. This song always makes me think of my grandmother that passed away. I can’t listen to this without getting a little emotional.
Also need to mention Adam D, the short haired guitarist is one of the best producers in metalcore. He has been responsible for some of the best albums in the genre.
@@SteveSmallwoodthemachine 1000% as an Aussie I’m a massive early years Parkway drive fan and Adam D was the man responsible for their first 2 albums being absolutely fire 🔥 dude is weapon producer, great guitarist and can sing/growl so fucking good as well.
@mattdenney1192 he absolutely is a force at whatever he is doing. He is onenof the most talented all around guys in music. I would love to see him do something with Devin Townsend. Imagine what those 2 geniuses could do together.
Jesse Leach - lead vocals (1999-2002, 2012-present) , Howard Jones - lead vocals (2002-2012). In February 2010, Killswitch Engage announced that vocalist Howard Jones would not be performing with Killswitch Engage during their winter tour with The Devil Wears Prada and Dark Tranquillity; during the time, All That Remains vocalist Philip Labonte was substituting for Jones until he could return. During that time, Jesse Leach(who came in March 18, 2010 for a series of songs) and Philip Labonte finished the rest of the tour without Howard Jones. As for Lorna Shore is a Deathcore; blackened death metal; symphonic metal; metalcore (early) band, The song Rose of Sharyn - Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz has said that this song is about a friend of the band's vocalist Howard Jones whose mother passed away.
This song was 100% about Howard's mom's passing. Another band with a black gentleman as the lead singer is Brothel by Autumn Lies Buried, its HEAVY, CHONKY, and it sounds like TECH9 mixed with SLIPKNOT, it's amazing please listen to this I BEG YOU!!
Checked them out! I like them! Very heavy and chonky! Check out a band called the world I knew. They are similar! The songs "lifeline" and "pieceful" are really good and the guy raps and screams.... thanks for suggesting that band autumn lies buried🤓
I would have expected some tears from Hollywood given the subject matter. I would say the biggest difference between hardcore and metalcore is metalcore has more melody in the guitars, whereas in hardcore it's just crunchy riffs. And Lorna Shore and Slaughter to Prevail are deathcore. Also gotta get to My Last Serenade, The Arms of Sorrow, and their cover of Holy Diver
Yeah, but that would require Hollywood to actually listen to the lyrics instead of playing to the camera the entire time. Love these guys but damn he can be frustrating sometimes lol
Every member of killswitch is great if you ask me, current or prior. At least the ones i’m familiar with 😂 you want amazing cleans, go for Howard, you want great screams, go for Jesse, they’ve got it all
So happy to see you guys doing more Killswitch, they're my absolute favorite band. You've gotten a few samples from the Howard Era, so now I'd suggest checking out their first two albums with Jesse, the ones that were massively influential to Metalcore and a big part of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal; it's heavier but still has cleans and lotsa melody. Y'all should check out both of the albums in their entirety, but, from the first album, I'd recommend: Irreversal, Numb Sick Eyes, and In the Unblind in particular. For Alive or Just Breathing: Numbered Days, My Last Serenade, Temple from the Within, Just Barely Breathing, and the Element of One. Should definitely listen to more of As Daylight Dies (Reject Yourself, Eye of the Storm, Break the Silence), as well as Disarm the Descent (In Due Time, Beyond the Flames, Turning Points) and Incarnate (Hate By Design, Embrace the Journey... Upraised, Quiet Distress). So basically listen to everything!!! Keep it up, guys.
Well it’s about damn time. Gatta wait for patreon requests to get anything done from months ago. Pretty sure I requested this last year on fb as well. Either way, finally Howard’s mom gets her song played.
I was lucky enough to drink beers with Killswitch Engage here in Australia for 3+ hrs a few years back. They are the most down to earth bunch of guys ever. The guitarist Adam D called a few of my mates just to make their day!
Oceano and god forbid have black singers as well Yall honestly should do a whole album feview of alive or just breathing by kse. It is such an important part of the New Wave Of American Heavy Metal that made metal core so massive in the early 2000s
You guys are awesome! Killswitch was a powerband formed from the two bands, "Overcast" and "Aftershock" other members from those two bands formed other huge melodic-metalcore bands...btw "God Forbid" has an African American lead singer, and they were awesome...check out the song "War of Attrition" thumbs up guys!
Killswitch Engage was the band that renewed my faith in metal. Metal got stagnant in the 90s with a few exceptions. Then these guys came like a tidal wave and they brought back powerful vocals, Melodic/technical guitars, inspiring lyrics and sheer energy. They were the biggest breath of fresh air and opened me to a whole other area of metal, after sticking to the Hard Rock NWOBHM/Thrash stuff. They were the band that lead me to In Flames, Trivium, Soilwork, As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fall and so on. I hold this band in my top 3 of all time, third only to Ac/Dc and Iron Maiden.
I have this in my car cd player right now. Yes I said cd player lol. Its a 2012. But i cant help wanna listen to these guys whenever im driving. I lost all my old killswitch cds. this is the only one i still have . I do stream songs on my phone so i get to listen to everything, but i keep meaning to buy another copy of end of heartache and alive or just breathing and even the 2009 album. The more recent albums arent too bad either, but nothing touches AOJB, EOH, and ADD.
Howard and Jesse have always had a good working relationship from the beginning. Jesse does backing vocals for several songs on The End of Heartache and performed live with the band on several occasions, much like what Howard is doing now. And it’s really awesome to see, both guys time as frontman were awesome and unique. And the fact that they can all remain friends and give the fans something so amazing when they’re together is truly underrated. So much bad blood exists when a band member is replaced or has to step away, it’s really cool to see that’s not the case at all with KSE.
Great reaction! Subbed. I love the Howard Jones era of Killswitch. Regarding black singers in metal, you should check out Oceans of Slumber, progressive/doom metal from Texas. Cammie's voice is just something else. Personal favourites of theirs are Suffer the Last Bridge, The Decay of Disregard, A Return to the Earth Below, and No Colour No Light. Might be worth checking one of those out.
Awesome video. This song was written as a eulogy to Howard’s mom as she had passed. I don’t know for sure, but I presume her name was Sharyn. It’s amazing how music that is this aggressive can still be deep and meaningful. Also, music doesn’t know color. If there is one thing in this history of humanity that can bring people from all walks of life together, it’s music.
Also Adam D (the guitarist singing back ups is a badass producer and did the drums for the album before this. Mike D. the bass player did a lot of their album art, plus other bands in the area/scene. Super talented dudes
I know a perfect band for tou Hollywood's. Fire from the gods. Check out American sun. Hes a black front man that is also Jamaican but im telling you will be all over that band. But that aside metal doesn't have color culture. Metalheads are family and we dont care about that. My favorite killswitch engage song is always for personal reasons. Even though things have gotten better it still has a place in my life. The video will have you tearing up.
Bad Brains were an all black hardcore punk band in the 70s and early 80s. They changed stylistically to more reggae, hard rock, alt metal but they are pioneers of hardcore.
You guys gotta check out Last serenade and My curse....This band was absolutely unstoppable for a good while. Howard is one the nicest guys i ever met and completely genuine, no fake shit. Adam is hilarious and when i got see both Howard and Jessie on stage together....Total 🔥🔥🔥. Would love to see them team up again. You should check out howards other bands like Devil you know and his recent band scion. Howard is currently working with Adam again in an unnamed band and are almost finished it..CANNOT WAIT TO HEAR It. Also if you are a fan of Jessie with killswitch, Check out their side project Times of Grace..the song Forgotten one, is AMAZING!!!!
Lorna Shore is Deathcore. There aren't many black people in metal generally although that is slowly changing , one of the other most well known for me would be Benji from Skindred.
Good morning fellas! Oh hell ya! I was excited to see Killswitch again on here! I love them! This is a great album! I suggest next one of my favs "this fire" or "when darkness falls".. GREAT CHOICE GUYS! 🤘❤️🤓🤓
I remember when they came to corpus christi when Howard was still the singer, I got caught in the wall of death 🤘🤘🤘🤘 they are as amazing live as you think
Jesse started and after their debut album he left, and Howard was there for about a decade. Then Howard left and Jesse has been there since he departed. However in their last album Atonement, Jesse wrote the signal fire knowing he was going to ask Howard Jones to be singing with them on the record and they even did it live when Killswitch Engage toured with Light The Torch which was Howard’s band. LAJON WITHERSPOON from SEVENDUST is black and vocalist you should do more of them considering they are from Atlanta Georgia too!!
So the ‘core’ sub genres of heavy music all rely on the breakdown - the section of a song that has a chunky slowed down riff. But hardcore, metalcore, and deathcore all do this in different ways. Hardcore is more rooted in hardcore punk but with a metal edge to it, with bands like Hatebreed, Knocked Loose, & Turnstile. Metalcore is generally melodic metal mixed with hardcore, but with more focus on the breakdown than in regular metal, with bands like Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, & Converge. Deathcore is a mix of death metal and hardcore, with bands like Lorna Shore, Suicide Silence, & Slaughter to Prevail. I think the discussion at the end of the video over what hardcore is, and getting mixed up about it, just comes from confusion between hardcore vs death metal vs deathcore. The death genres are both “hard core” in nature, but the actual hardcore genre is different from these as it’s not as extreme, but more rooted in punk
There are lot of black metal singers. Lajon from Sevendust. Howard from Killswitch Engage. The singer from the band Oceano. Bad Brains is an all black Punk / Metal band that has been around since the 70's and influenced bands like Metallica. Living Colour. The singer and other members from the band God Forbid are also black. Also, Eric July from the Metalcore band Backwardz is also black. That's just to name a few.
Love jes I grew up with him, Howard, are this band more popular. He has an amazing voice, still love my jess vocals. 😅 old timer with this band, love when he came back.

Sevendust are the OG metal band with a black dude singing. Living Color was kind of rock and alternative, but great as well. But Fire from the Gods has an amazing singer that’s black doing metal too.

Zero skips on this album
this album and Ascendancy by Trivium is my playlist
Adam D basically engineered the sound of every major metalcore release for over a decade, too.
True story.
