It's good that ex-wife went on and on about OP not having a revenge affair; making him promise. Enough time passed so that OP was able to move on to a real relationship and not just a revenge fling. Ex-wife should focus on her relationship with her kids and herself.

The funny thing is if the roles were reversed those same people would tell the wife to dump him, don't look back, keep the kids from him, and take him for all he's worth. When wives cheat, there is always a collective of people telling the husband to try and work things out. When husbands cheat, *everyone* understands her anger and actively tells her to go scorched earth.

You could potentially make the argument that having sex with someone outside the relationship once is a mistake. I’m not, but hypothetically you could. But two years? That would be over 600 consecutive mistakes with no efforts made to prevent the mistake from happening again. Always assume incompetence over malice I always say, but I also always say that at some point the two become indistinguishable.
