Murgatroyd was the name of a mascot on the UK TV series called Magpie which aired in the '60s and '70s and the name was suggested by a viewer, they invited their audience to write in with suggestions and Murgatroyd was the winning entry.

Hi, glad to see the Premier in the back ground. The wife and I will be coming over from Oz and meeting up with the wife’s Brother and Wife coming over from the US and also her younger Brother up from London in a couple of weeks.We normally stay at relatives but after 50 years there are not many close ones left. So we are getting together for a week at the Premier before going our seperate ways again . we will definitely be paying Murgatroids a visit while there. We have to do some scattering of the Mother in law’s ashes in the river Wharfe at Burnsall that’s why we’re all together. Harry Ramsdens is also close bye,although my Mother said they didn’t go there any more because if had “ gone off” Keep up the good work Lee the Wife and I are keen followers of your blog.

We visit Murgatroyds every couple of weeks and our favourite is the fish bites and chips. In full agreement and would highly recommend this place. More expensive to eat in but staff have been excellent so far. 👍

The largest cod caught was 212lb. They can grow to 51 inches.
Just posted cod can be 25 pounds fish is portioned. Chances of catching 212 again very slim over fishing.

Fish ( Cod ) and chips cost nothing when I was growing up in the 60's 18 quid for fish n chips is nuts.
Funny that, I remember chips at 5d a bag, then 6d fish was 10d rising to 1’ shilling, happy days.

It steams the chips & can make them unnecessarily soggy.
I've only recently discovered this - ask for the chips boxed separately.
The Fish looked supreme and the batter sumptuously crispy..

It's basically two portions of fish and chips in the one box.
That being said did look excellent.
For me though, I'd have opted for what we call the "kiddies cone" of chips, and I would have had the chips in a separate box so they don't "sweat".
On a note about fish and chips generally, I tend to opt for a small portion. Not because of me being a light eater, on the contrary.
But it's because I have a low boredom threshold, and it gets boring quickly.
Everyone has their favourite, but I'm going to plug my mate Dave in The Craftsman pub in Qawra (Malta).
Best fish and chips on the island, and it's cod too, on an island where cod isn't easily available.

£17 is still a lot - £13-£14 is reasonable. £1.20 for mushy peas is a rip off, as usual. I would have expected pickled egg/onion/gherkin to be cheaper.
I'm living in the Philippines - flying back for a long vacation in September, and one of my first ports of call will be Murg's.
Living previously in North Yorkshire and traveling extensively in the UK, I still hold Mugatroyds in the #1 plaice (😂) in the length & breadth of Britain.

Murgatroids is my favourite too ! For those unfamiliar with the area , it's in Yeadon , Leeds , and only one mile away from Leeds / Bradford airport , towards Bradford ; don't worry , still 6 miles from it .
Would've of split that into 2 meals, but a big no no was sticking the fish on top of the chips and prefer the 2 separate so stays crispy and not wet and limp chips 9/10
And the mushy peas in a silver dish .
10/10 for me Lee ... looked fantastic ...with batter that good I'll bet they do fantastic " Scraps" 😋

Lee,I live in Ilkley now but Leeds born and bred and hands down this is the best fish and chips around,not far from Leeds Bradford Airport if people want a land mark.
I was here the other month with Dad and brother its great.
Very busy with coach parties and older folk but just fantastic.

I've never been to Murgatroyd's but I'm certainly tempted to make the journey up there at some point to give them a go. To me, Upton coal fired chippy blows everywhere else away that I have ever visited, and some of those others have been excellent!
What they still use coal fired ovens. I thought they only existed in museums like Beamish and The Black Country Living Museum.
I'm not an expert but it looked a bit over cooked and the chips looked awful. A 7.5 for me.

Got to admit; i agree with you - it's my favourite chippy, too.
We were there recently, prior catching a flight, from the next-door airport, & struggled a bit even with the standard size portions.
That fish batter is to die for.
Just try to avoid Sundays - the Blue rinse brigade, invade the place.😂

Meal was lovely nothing to complain about. I had big un partner had special.
Fully agree with the review however.
One thing I would say however is while we were sat eating waitress who seemed to be in charge was talking to couple next to us about a regular who was expected anytime and her table was ours. Wich felt a bit off as if she had booked it then we should not have been seated there.
On our exit the queue was out the door and the lady who wanted our table came in went straight past queue and said to waitress is my table ready and walked straight to it.
The people at front of queue said they had been waiting for there booked table but had to wait. I would like to say that they should not be prioritising to regulars if one person in queue had to wait then all should.
Not just allowing her to walk past long queue and be seated b4 others..
Made us feel rushed. 1st come 1st served. No special treatment should be given

Our little local chippy does a large cod and small chips for £13. (Just gone up from £12) The fish is top quality and bigger than that one, and does us three adult meals. The chips does us four meals. And I am not telling where I live. (Not near the sea either.)

A standard haddock and chips at Murgatroyds is more than enough for me. Highly recommended … with Mushy Peas and Yorkshire Tea of course

I live locally and we go regularly. Lovely food lovely staff clean and lovely restaurant interior. Always packed. I always go for the monster haddock. Never had a bad meal. People say it's pricey but it's excellent value especially compared to Gordon Ramsey's 😅

Fish looked good but the chips seemed like there were a lot of scrag ends and they looked a bit soggy.

Hi Lee another cracking topical upload that looked fantastic I’ll give it a ten out of ten and I’ve never been there 😂 my favourite fish and chips ever is Yorkshire Fisheries Blackpool I have never tasted such well cooked fish and the chips are mind blowing to not mention the mushy peas and Curry sauce and I have tasted hundreds of different fish suppers during my life I’m 60 lol. I have to say tho that establishment must do a roaring trade it looked fabulous and weep cooked . Can’t wait I’m going to Blackpool on 21 sept till 25th for the Annual family weekend there me and the wife watch your channel regularly and really enjoy it . This is a great channel. Love the personality, but it is SO over produced it takes ages to get to the point. Major major fail for a channel that has real promise. I mean the shots on the picnic table. Really 2 minutes? Gotta get better

I took some of my Polish colleagues there the other week, i had a fantastic piece of cod, one of my colleagues had the Giant Haddock, which beat him.... not cheap, but you get what you pay for....top job!

Took my wife to Saltburn by the Sea yesterday afternoon to try and get a table at the Seaview Restaurant but failed....massively popular since telly visited (Fred Sirieix visited with Nadya Hussain). Fall back position was takeaway from their chippy downstairs. Had Haddock n Chips and Whitby Scampi n Chips and went and scoffed em on the pier. I don't know how they do it but the fish tasted nothing like fish from an inland chippy. It was buttery, white as white can be and the batter (incl scraps) was perfect with perfect chips n peyz on't side. Definitely going back but will book a table next time.

Hi Lee, I had a similar sized cop and chips at 'The Pump House' pub at Albert Dock in Liverpool once, the fish was so big it was served on a chopping board because they did not have big enough plates. The meal was lovely. I am stuffed just watching you eat 'Jaws'.

My 7 year old said she loves her fish and chips with curry sauce from Murgatroyds (we were there a week ago, a walk around the tarn feeding the ducks) She said you need to up your game and do a McDonalds happy meal review as she's fed up of breakfasts and fish and chips 😅😅

There is but one truly great chip shop in the UK. So much so I drive 250 mile round trip to eat there every 2 weeks. Ok, I visit family, but i go for the chips. Ocean Boat Fish & Chips, in Stourbridge. Featuring the Black Country delicacy of Battered Chips. You will find no better chips than here, fair trek from Mansfield, so give the Porsche a decent charge😉

My wife and I have watched your UA-cam movies with great interest.
In particular the Curry Sauce that accompanies the Chips, as it's not something we have in Australia 🦘.
So where and when did Curry Sauce (and mushy peas) find their way into Fish and Chips folklore?
I think it came about in the 1980's-1990's. Although I have a feeling mushy peas came before curry sauce. Another side offering that is great with fish and chips in the UK is a pickled onion (especially if you have homemade ones)
Hi mushy peas have been around since the 70s, at least in Yorkshire. Curry sauce was much later. I cannot understand why anyone would have curry sauce with fish’n’chips, but each to their own I guess.
With India being a colony of Great Britain, curry and other Indian dishes incorporated themselves into English food. Chicken Tikka Masala being the national dish of the UK is a prime example.

They are the best I've had in my life, I take my brother there when he comes up from Devon and he would come up here just for their fish and chips. I find the standard portion more than enough for me.
Actually Billy Murgs is the best chippy ive been to and will do a detour to go here even if miles away.
