It's an absolute extraordinary artistic achievement. I just finished the last episode and I am speechless. As much as I love Jukov TV series, I think this is even better. Even after so many years, and with all the liberties in Russia, it still takes a lot of courage to make films on such a complex and tragic subject. There are so many things to say and to comment, that I prefer to keep silent... During each episode I had so many thoughts and thinking what I am going to put in a future comment that I realise I would need a book. One thing is for sure, after I started watching Russian films last year, initially as a reaction to this Nazi like "burning of Russian culture", I am very glad I am confirmed in my love for it. The Russian artists, actors and directors alike, are as professional as their great writers of the XIX century. Congratulations, dear excellent builders of Russian culture!!!!! Would Hitler have any chance to start the war in the first place without the alliance of the USSR (through the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact Germany and Russia attacked Poland at the same time and split it like good friends) and without the long-term agreements between Germany and USSR? I think not.
@@greekstudent8550 You might be assuming Stalin would have attacked Germany without the pact, and/or that Germany wouldn't have attacked Poland without the pact. Maybe, maybe not. Hitlers desire for land and racial violence would be the same with or without the pact however, so the pact isn't a decisive factor overall, but certainly a useful, if very temporary, convenience for Adolf and Stalin.

Compare the treatment of the assassination of Sergei Kirov in this movie with demonstrated fact. Here, the assassin is a cuckolded husband, and there was no involvement by political conspirators. The British historian Robert Conquest, in a 1990 account relying upon sworn testimony in subsequent trial documents, reveals that Nikolaev was arrested twice in front of Kirov's headquarters, and, on the second occasion, found to be armed. He was twice released on the orders of the second-in-command of the Leningrad NKVD.
