Fun fact:
Keichii Tsuchiya was actually planning to quit running on the street after he raced on the track but after making Pulpsy, he got the itch again and he did race on the touges again. However, he got caught by the authorities and got his license taken. Hearing that he was running on the streets again behind warnings from his sponsors not to, his racing license was revoked too. He had to fight tooth and nail to get back his licenses and thank god he did. After the fiasco, that's where he quit street racing for life and started drift competitions which became the modern D1GP and Drift Muscle series.
Jun Kitami It's also due to touge which cost him a place in TRD N2 AE86 race. It's his biggest regret that he can't compete in TRD N2 AE86 race.

Dude... This happened to me. I was zoning out doing 90ish on I5 in my BMW 335i. Suddenly out the corner of my eye I see headlights creeping up on the left, as it passed me I see its lighted silhouette, immediately I noticed that distinctive outline... AE86, I swear to god I heard the anime sword noise and a beam of light cut through my vision. It was an incredibly spiritual experience...

@@kanserholicgaming4068 those are great shows. Initial has its place though. Very different context. Initial D is def romantization, but it did help expand and grow the drift scene. The drift scene is only 1 part, of the greater car genre. That doesn't take away, that it reinforces it. Honestly, the AE86, is a reminder, that cars evolve, and become better built, but we shouldn't lose vision on what is important. Every day people drive cars, not every one can afford high end racing machines. You can tell decades later, to this day, manufacturers keep that in mind.
Fun fact: the front plate on the 86 in the thumbnail says “dornatsu” which is Japanese for Donuts!

When I was around 5-6 years old, a neighbor of mine had an 86. He would spend all of his time after work giving it a shine, every inch of that car was immaculate. I would always wonder why the heck would he waste all his time and energy on such a basic car, now I understand why
the hachi roku isn't a car, it's a freakin' icon at this point.

I knew someone with an all stock (non GTS) '85 coupe, red, black interior and manual transmission. I'd always stare at this thing when I got to work, it was MINT. I hadn't seen the car for a few days, asked the owner what she did with the car, she told me she sold it. Asked me why I asked, told her about my love for the car. I then proceeded to ask how much she sold it for. $500!!!! that's HOW MUCH!!!! 500 f'n DOLLARS!!!. I almost cried! IIRC the car had 55k miles, was her grocery getter. Saw the car a couple months later, it didn't look like the same car, it was a wreck :(.

I bought an AE86 and won 7 championships in 3 years in SCCA and NCSCC in California in 1989 thru 1991. Loved that car and kept it until hit by a semi.

@@jordanrobshaw1406 Yeah, my car was totaled and my neck was not helped either. It twisted the frame so it couldn't be repaired. My heart sank as that car meant a lot to me. Never raced again as a result. Fortunately, Assetto Corsa has one and they got it right.

In 1984 we were looking to buy an MR2. Our Toyota dealership didn't have any in stock but the salesperson said, "Hey, we have this Corolla hatch with an MR2 engine." Since one of my bucket list items was to have a car with hidden headlights we took it for a test drive and it was insane. Sold it 10 years later after our daughter was born. My son saw an old picture of us with the car and he freaked out. Yelled, "Hey that's the 86! You owned an 86?" And he has never spoken to us since.

I was only a kid at the time, but I hate modern cars. Electrics and turbos and fast performance but no soul. I just want a balanced, decent horsepower sexy looking coupe. I am a sucker for RX7 even if some turboed them just due to the redline and rotary engine haha. Actually I don't mind turbo at all if it still sounds good...I won't even mind hybrid if they sound good . But problem is, they don't (yea yea 918, not like I can afford that).

Shinobi Ninja all I see are more people buying no performance option and no exhaust option turbo Porsche 911s, becoming a thing. Rhe ugly F80 BMW m3s roam the streets everywhere in yasmarina blue, and M2 can barely sell with 2017 models still in inventory for local dealers.
The only popular sport and performance car that is proper and popular is Lamborghini Hurucan where I am, or the old Porsche Cayman. I've not even seen a 997 911 that Isn't a turbo S. 996 is a unicorn despite its cheap pricetag, I guess no one wants them. I've only seen a AE86 ONCE.
At least FT86 is selling like hotcakes...Then again...So are STI in my area (highest STI sale in America).
Alfa 4c are brand new even for 2015 models and discounted like crazy. Still...Nobody wants one.
Proper Sports cars are dying and too many people who buy them are speccing them completely wrong half the time. It's just for tax purposes to them, or the ideal of having a pretty sports car. They don't care about the cars themselves.
Even half of the Hurucan owners pretty much just get it to take their girls to dinner and drive it in city rather than beating them in the twisties.

My 2008 Corolla CE has 126hp at 6k rpm’s. Redlines at 6500. Is FWD, but has a curb weight of 2550lbs. Mild weight reduction and new light weight wheels, can reduce it by about 100lbs. Plus, if tracking it, run half a tank of gas, to save some more from that curb weight. Stiffen the suspension with some shocks/struts, springs, sway bars, strut bar. Add some better brakes, with DOT 4 RBF.(yes it’s drums in the back, many race at the 24hrs of lemons with drums, and do just fine). And you can come fairly close to the AE86. Can’t drift, but I’m not a drift guy anyway. Yes doesn’t have independent rear suspension, which is the biggest negative about the car for the purpose of fun..but it’s not that big of an issue. I’m having fun on the mountains, not racing actual sports cars lol. Just having fun with my daily on the cheap lol. I find just reducing the body roll and lowering the ride height, has made it handle very well in corners(moderate not extreme speed). Looking to add a well routed cold air intake to it, plus looking into custom exhaust options(not wanting to delete the cat, for compliance and efficiency reasons), that’ll help the 1ZZ-FE engine breath optimally. Maybe look into a performance cam to increase lift and duration, with maybe an ECU with a professional tune..but that’s kinda a dream more than a current goal lol. I don’t want to hurt it’s fantastic reliability just for a little power. Would turbo or supercharger(did have a TRD one available at one time) nicely..but I value it’s reliability more than to go that route. Easier to just buy a factory turbo car instead of opening up that can of worms lol. But NA is fine for me and my purposes. Learn to “drive a slow car fast”, and I have a lot of fun in the mountains around me! If you live in a flat and non curvy area..maybe a muscle car or something with that highway “pull”, is a better option lol. But I’m hitting roads where 60-70mps is very quick!!

Tbh, the appeal of the ae86 isnt the performance. its not particularly hard to match what the car is capable of. But it definitely has its own experience when racing it- and few cars match the characteristics to the same degree.
