what's badass that several people overlook is that Mike Dirnt backed up Billie Joe regardless if he was wrong - he smashed his bass too. THATS a friend.

@Magic 8 Ball Interesting how you don't mention playing the first Green Day album. While most of their discography at this point can't exactly be considered punk [particularly from a classic punk perspective], their albums before Dookie can definitely be considered punk to some capacity. Dookie can be decisive since it is on a major label, but it does have roots of punk in it and it credited for introducing punk to the younger 90s audience. Ik you didn't ask and I apologise, but their earlier albums are pretty important.

@@lesnash6953 I have to respectfully disagree with you. Nobody expected an acoustic ballad by them at that point. The worst they could have done was make Dookie over and over again. Is it my favorite song? No. Not by a long shot. However, the song had been around in some form since 1990. THAT wasn't the sellout moment. The sellout moment was each acoustic ballad AFTER that, hoping for a sure-fire hit. I will say that the first 4 or 5 albums are untouchable. Take care, man!

Like there are good musicians that put out radio hits and some are good people, but I miss the days of the 2000s when more people found really good artists online and mainstream radio didnt know what the fuck to do. So they finally cracked, then started playing more pop punk. Sadly though, they went back to their old bullshit and wont play older 2000s bands again.

@@bobpigs6467 I think Green Day gets a bad rep for their integrity. Even though they did change their sound throughout their career, I don't think their work ethic wavered. And success in the music industry isn't just about talent but also about luck and drive/being a workhorse. Coming out of this scene and end up where Green Day is? Probably took a lot of work and I can respect that, even if their music isn't for me. Same with Foo's only difference is that they've had the adventage of Dave Grohl and by this had an instant audience and media attention. I think the hate lies surely on the more poppy approach Green Day has because in theory, they should've more street cred than the Foo's. Only thing I don't like is that more and more bands change their sound to be played by radio and lose some of their "integrity" along the way but I can't blame them. Must be hard to lose attention/opportunities because the "trend" changed. Of course this is more the case with mainstream success.

Nimrod and Warning are mostly great, underrated albums. I mean on Warning you've got "Blood, Sex & Booze" which is a paean to being a submissive for example, pretty brutally honest from Billie Joe there. Even the first two albums have some pretty poppy rooted songs, it's just the way he writes.

This is why I love this channel. You have unique content & it's neutrally covered. Every band ( every person for that matter) has its share of ups & downs. Clearly the "downs" are covered far more often & usually by a creator that is more concerned with talking shit about them with a total lack of respect because they are not a fan of their music in general. A lot of creators are more concerned with presenting themselves as sarcastically clever than they are about their content being true or factual. This channel is truly the exception. Your videos are informative & verified. They are always presented with respect for the artist(s) whether you're a fan or not. It's a fine line to walk doing all those things & still using current slang in regards to pop culture, but you seem to do it effortlessly with every post.

Punk Rock, and just Rock 'N' Roll in general is about nonconformity, it's about not being the normal, autotuned, lip syncing performer who had a songwriter write their songs and musicians write songs for them. Billie was going through a hard time just overworking himself and falling into substance abuse again, that doesn't make him a corporate rockstar, that makes him an artist, a performer, a hard worker and everything else. Apologizing was his choice because he knew exactly where he was at in the moment and at the time he said what he said. That doesn't mean he's not a punk or a rocker. He is who he is and that's the most Rock 'N' Roll thing you can be.

It's a totally underrated record, every song on it is great in my opinion, although oddly I didn't care as much for the two songs that became singles and radio staples as I did for all of the other songs on that record that hardly anybody has heard of or cares about.. I think the total running time is under 30 minutes with 14 songs but the songs are so catchy and fun to listen to, who really cares about the length of the disc? I lived in Corvallis, Oregon in the '90s and went to a party at a house near downtown one time in like 1992, and there was a good-sounding band playing inside, in a town that didn't get a lot of good rock shows overall. I was there to see some friends, and they were outside and told me "the keg is dry and the band isn't that great, let's go" and I was like "are you sure? sounds good from here" where I was literally just right outside the wall from where they were playing. I ended up leaving with my friends for whatever reason, but a couple of years later I was told "the band at that party was Green Day" and they'd just had a hit song on MTV which I was unaware of. So yeah, I got to hear them from just the other side of a wall and peeked in at them just briefly but don't remember anything except a band at full-tilt with a bunch of snotty teenagers wandering around disappointed about the keg.

One thing that isn't well known - in September 2012 they cancelled a show in Bologna, Italy. Three bands prior to them played (including Social Distortion, ATL and A&A), however The Kooks refused to play. Apparently The Kooks knew the concert was cancelling. The media found out that the concert is cancelled the night BEFORE - and they did a great job of burying it. What I understood, was that BJA was hospitalized the night before because of too much alcohol intake. This was mere DAYS before the iHeartRadio show.
I was happy for him when they said he'd gone to rehabilitation. For someone who travelled from Croatia (and they have still never played in Balkan area) to a cancelled show, it was quite sad.

    @MaxwellGriffin001 4 роки тому +5

I actually worked this iHeart show and I can say, the whole thing is not what it appeared to be. I was a runner, in and out of the control room with the graphics team. I was in the control room when somebody from Green Day's team was going over the ROS with the director and he explicitly asked for the graphics team to come up with a countdown for the screen (we don't usually have a live countdown that says "1 minutes", it's usually coordinated beforehand, and there's stage directors that talk to the band in the wings. Also, the band does a rehearsal and sound check and they know what songs they'll be playing and how many songs etc. etc.
The dude from Green Day's team then said, "we're dropping one song because Billie is going to go into a rant, so don't cut out, that'll be part of our time." The director said "Is the rant the last thing or is it between the songs?" He said "no, no, it's the last thing, so don't cut out of it."
This was highly unusual, so grumblings started and the rumor I was hearing most was that Billie was going to go to rehab more for exhaustion than anything else, but the PR people really wanted something "buzz" worthy going on while they were on hiatus to keep selling albums and merch. Some of us worked a couple more of these and there's always rumors and hearsay, but the general consensus of what happened is, he wasn't drunk or high. He may have been frustrated because the crowd wasn't that into it, but, he's been around for a while, I'm sure it's not the first time he's had to work a bad crowd. It was probably the very poor reception to their new album(s) and all the side projects he had going on that just burned him out and this coordinated to keep them looking punk-rock.

I was 9 years old when "Dookie" came out and I still have very vivid memories about it because the music was so different than what I've had heard before (big fan of Michael Jackson at that time). Loved them dearly but lost some interest after "American Idiot" became a massive success. I still think they're great, great guys and, for me, they can rant about whatever they like - It won't change a thing. Especially because I adore Billy Joe's collaboration with Norah Jones on "Foreverly" (what a gem!) - I hope he does more country music because his voice fits perfectly for that kind of stuff!

it kinda makes me a bit sad that Green Day is living in the shadow of Dookie and American Idiot. Half the fanbase will always say it isn't as good as Dookie, the other half will say it isn't as good as American Idiot. The thing is, maybe that's true, but that doesn't mean the music isn't good. I don't think Uno, Dos, or Tre were, objectively, as good as Dookie or American Idiot, but personally they're three of my favorite albums of all time. They were just 36 songs of some friends having fun, and even if you don't like the trilogy, it's a really nice thing that they're still able to write what they like and ignore their fans hating it. Especially with Father Of All..., despite the fact that fans basically despise the album, they don't care, they're just having fun with it and doing what they want to do. I, personally, think that's fucking awesome, and extremely punk rock.

Yeah that came to mind while I was watching this video and thinking about my favourite album. I'm not gonna pretend I was a fan in the very early days (I was too young and I don't even know if you could buy their albums over here back then), nor did I especially like the American Idiot era. But I love Dookie and insomniac is even better.

I actually watched his "freak out" live. You could definitely tell the crowd wasn't into it, but that's no fault of the bands or Billie's fault by any means. Billie tried to get them motivated and they all ignored him. I feel like they were told they had more time than they did backstage cuz people thought they would be better received by the crowd, but when they weren't they were cut short to a certain extent. I know that's not the official story, but that would explain why they were booked along side so many pop artists to begin with. I thought it was great Billie stood up and told them to fuck off. Half the people there probably had never experienced real music that isn't auto-tuned in person like that so they didn't like it. Ignorant crowd in my opinion...

Don't know why Green Day gets so much hate. Not claiming they were on the short list of all-time great bands or anything but they were definitely a quality three-piece rock n roll band for at least a dozen years. Dookie, Kerplunk, Nimrod etc...those aren't light pop albums. It was people running down rock bands like this that has left us with Taylor Swift, Billy Eilish, etc..on the pop charts

By the time I'd moved from NYC to SF in 1989 Green Day were a well known local act. I was doing studio work, writing music and giging around CA, mostly filling in for band members who couldn't attend parts of their tours. I met the guys in GD a few times and were impressed with, what I considered to be a modern day classic punk band. Dookie was a beautiful piece of punk power but it was also a polarizing point for any punk band. By the same metric that made them popular it also killed their punk sensibilities.

Remember those kids that faked a Green Day album and people bought it? They just easily made up some songs that sounded like Green Day and put out some album artwork and stuff and people thought it was a new Green Day album. That goes to show how predictable and generic their music and image is.

He shouldn't have apologised. Corporate just can't take artists with attitude now and only want talent who toe the line. Great bands like the Sex Pistols, Guns N Roses and Motorhead would never get signed if they were starting out today because they don't make life easy for executives. Eric Bischoff said it best, controversy creates cash.
