Lee's movement towards the Susquehanna with Ewell's Corps was a feint and the Union high command understood it as such. Meade's dilemma was determining the location of the Confederate main body and whether Lee would concentrate his forces at Hanover which threatened DC and Baltimore or Gettysburg, which would indicate a move towards Frederick to threaten DC from the line of the Monocacy River. To sell the concentration at Hanover is the reason Lee sent Stuart on a ride around the Union rear, as a linkup between Ewell and Stuart would indicate the army's point of advance. Lee had no reasonable expectation of receiving any intelligence until Stuart joined Ewell. E. V. White sent Lee intelligence on the 25th that the AoP had pontoons across the Potomac at Point of Rocks so Lee had to know that the federals were across the river before the night of the 28th. Stuart undeservingly became one of the fall guys for Lee's failed battle at Gettysburg despite having fulfilled one of the toughest assignments during the war. That Lee failed to properly employ the three brigades of cavalry that Stuart left him is never really touched upon, which in addition to leaving Lee "blind", also caused infantry units to be used guarding the trains delaying their movement towards the battlefield.

Only outsiders call it “Gettysburg”. It is properly pronounced “Gettisburg” with an “isss” sound.

There ya go. I'm an outsider, I plead guilty. I apologize for the mis-pronounciation and thanks for the heads-up! Note that I've also mis-pronounced Staunton, VA, and I'm sure to be mangling MS placenames when I start rolling out Vicksburg videos. Look forward to it!

Thank you for this video; however, I do take issue w/ you with regard to your foul accusations leveled at Gen. Stuart, and quotes by so called historians. I suggest you watch Joe Ryan's exhaustive and well researched videos on the subject, which, thankfully and clearly put this nonsense to rest.
