- Heavy truck traffic and poor air quality are among the concerns of a group of people in Milton, upset about the construction at CN Rail’s Logistics Hub in Milton.
The $250 million project isn’t sitting well with the Town of Milton, nor Halton, but just on Tuesday the Federal Court of Appeal struck down a lower court order halting construction.
The Halton Region and the Milton has been fighting this project for years - ever since construction first started back in 2021.
The councillor for the area says the construction and operation of the intermodal hub being so close, will pose serious health and safety risks - pointing specifically to air quality.
“That includes concerns about respiratory diseases, even cardiac diseases, in a community that is going to house at least 34,000 people, schools, hospitals, that is unacceptable,” said Ward 4 Councillor Sameera Ali.
It was these concerns that first led to a lower court to halt construction back in March.
But CN filed an appeal and requested stay of the decision. Last week that request was approved.
“That’s something that is disappointing for the community, myself too,” said Ali.
The $250 million project aims to double CN’s existing line of tracks in the area and construct a hub for containers to be transferred between semi trucks and freight cars.
Stacey Newman - with “Milton says no” - says that heavy truck traffic is a concern because of the potential increase in emissions. So she wants CN Rail to construct the hub somewhere else.
“We are not opposed to intermodal. it’s about putting these locations which are important in the Canadian landscape in good locations that are safe, that are zoned for heavy industry, that don’t pose a risk to residential communities in the direct vicinity,” said Newman.
The town says that it never gave CN Rail approval to close down Lower Base Line between First Line and Tremaine Road.
“When CN is allowed to do the things that they’re doing, it feels like we are powerless as a community,” said Newman.
CN has previously told CHCH News it received approval from the Canadian Transport Agency - and that it has attempted to collaborate with the region and town.
Ali says the the region and town will continue to fight the project.
CHCH News reached out to CN Rail for comment on Wednesday and have not heard back.
They have said in recent days that the project is critical to handle demand.
That intermodal site is right beside the Halton Waste Management site… if you purchase a new home in that area then thats on you…
Absolutely LOL
CN bought that land decades ago before those housing developments were even planned. It is the Town's fault for approving residential area directly beside it. I love that they are concerned about truck traffic and such when the entire east side of Milton is having warehouses & distribution hubs built aka constant trucks. I wonder how much tax payer money the town is going to piss away on this losing battle? I am sure their lawyers will be more than happy to keep going...
Air quality?? Please. Their own vehicles are what they should be worried about.
Yep, you're not wrong
Sometimes I gag at the scent of my own emissions.
@@Ynalaw me too but you can always blame it on the dog LOL
@@Ynalaw try showering 😝
Absolutely ridiculous. Those regions were the ones that approved this location for CN years ago….and anyone who has been involved with the development of the residential properties were well aware of that site. To those who have purchased a home there…do a bit of research before buying. To the politicians…shame on you. Spend your efforts on things that you can actually have an impact on and not waste taxpayers money on legal fees.
Milton wants Justin to put it in a tunnel & forget its there
I'm not saying your opinion is wrong, but you definitely don't have your facts lined up. Both the city of Milton and the Halton region were against the project the moment it was initially announced in early 2001. There's still decades old articles you can find about it.
@@fs150hz9 the railway track was the original Hamilton & Northwestern & it shouls supercede any Milton claim it doesnt belong but intermodal hubs are necessary for the lifeblood of any municipality & land buffers between residential should be necessary just build a yard over the 407 i guess
Maybe the developers, knew who owned the property for years, and it's federal land . so good luck .CN Rail needs this site. So I
guess you could put up for sale signs.
Congrats on building the Canadian National Railway train Tracks
Commerce , bring it on
We didn't buy a house in Milton because of the noisy train traffic and poor water quality - lack of major roads - traffic . Mississauga and Brampton is far superior .
Rural areas have always shared the space with the railways,
Railways have more rights to land than those buying houses,
CN will win everything.
Go back to your couch...
Good luck beating CNs team of lawyers lmfao
Greed will be the death of us.
Air quality is the least of your problems 🤣 I work in Vaughan beside the other CN yard it’s going to be the moving of all the trains at night and the screeching wheels along the steel rails that’s really gonna get you. 💀 at the end of the day it brings cash money so best put the house up for sale if ya don’t like it 😂
I remember when Milton was a nice little town, but all you goddamn people moved into it and destroyed it, so quit bitching about the railroad
that moved their tracks already once from the downtown & maybe they need to bury them from view
It’s okay Canadian People no need to get upset
MILTON - NO MORE CONDOS & WAREHOUSES - EMAIL YOUR TOWN COUNCIL YOUR CONCERNS. MILTON IS NOT THE ARMPIT OF ONTARIO 💯
Where is the maglev construction?
But congrats on building homes in Canada 🇨🇦
Aww poor people with money. Try living in Hamilton LOL
There’s already a CN Logistics Hub in Brampton. There’s no need to build another one.
More people, more houses, more products, in mass quantities, to be shipped in by rail.
Your out of touch. The town will lose every appeal. CN has been there for years. The town originally allowed them to set up there, and Intermodal is Federally regulated. Residents who bought homes there should be taking the town of Milton to court for allowing homes to be built next to land that was already industrial and owned by CN for years. What did they think was going to be built there?
CN should move elsewhere period.
