  • At Ewetopia Farms, we pride ourselves on our breeding of registered Suffolk sheep. In this episode, we list over 20 reasons why we think people should consider having Suffolk sheep or at least a Suffolk ram. We show you our Suffolks and using examples from our flock and our over twenty years of experience, to illustrate the benefits of Suffolk sheep. We cover topics such as growth, prolificacy, temperament, appearance just to name a few. We also dispell some myths about Suffolk sheep being unprofitable, single-lambers, poor mothers, wild, etc. Nothing could be farther from the truth!
    This is a long video because Suffolk sheep are our passion so we have a lot to say about them! So grab a coffee, and sit down and enjoy! We love to hear your feedback so don't be shy.
    With sheep farming, there is always something new to learn. I hope you enjoy this video. If you would like to follow along with us and experience life on a sheep farm on a daily basis, please subscribe so that you don't miss a single episode! Thanks for watching!

    At the end the way those sheep looked up at Arnie seemed as though they actually understood what he was saying, lol, you both do a good job & is fascinating to watch, a way of life. The one thing I don't agree with from another blog you did some time ago, was that it's Arnie who is the farmer, who has a wife that does the jobs on the farm of the farmers wife. You may not do the heavy work or due to allergy the feed, but you are a true farmer as well, just saying & both are exceptional breeders. Love from UK XX

      Thank you. I do all the lamb care and cleaning in the barns plus assist Arnie with practically everything. Plus I do registrations, record keeping, and marketing so it makes sense that Arnie does the strength related stuff and field work. There just isn't enough time in a day as it is lol! Thanks though. And yes, I sometimes get the feeling that the shee know exactly what we're saying!😆

    I love the fact you give your ewes a break in between lambings.They all look great!

      Thanks. It follows with my comment that just because they can do it, doesn't mean they should. Back to back breeding is very hard on the ewe and will probably reduce her lifespan

    Suffolk sheep have always been the most beautiful breed in my opinion. Their markings catch the eye even from far away making them almost majestic looking!! Then having up close viewing from your videos we get to see just how gorgeous they can be!!! I would love to have a small flock to graze my property but unfortunately the coyote population is too large for my comfort!!
    Once again thanks for sharing another interesting and informative video!!! I really enjoyed watching!!! I hope your tour was successful! Stay safe!!!

    As a handspinner, I'd like to say that it is very enjoyable to spin my Suffolk wool right from the fleece. The locks are shorter than my Shetland wool and it took some practice at first, but now it is producing beautiful yarn. So, if someone had just a few fleeces, it might be worth trying to market it for handspinning. If it is nicely sheared and relatively free of hay and bedding, it could bring a very nice price ($45 to $100+ per fleece). Also, coating the sheep (covering the wool) is going to increase the value of a fleece. So, it might be a bit of a sideline for some folks.
    Love the videos, and especially love how you know and care for them all as individuals. You folks are the very best kind of farmers!

      Thanks. We do actually have people that come for a Suffolk fleece or two each year. It is a much shorter staple length but there is a use and market for everything. We usually only ask $20/fleece.

    I think Suffolks are endlessly cute should go on there too! Their ears are amazing and they have such a pleasing look, that's why they attracted me personally. The only downside you didn't mention to some was wool vs hair sheep which can go either way depending upon if you have a wool hobby or if you want less work/cost into hiring shearers. One more question, at your farm specifically, how much does it cost to raise a bottle baby? Do you ever milk our your ewes by hand to bottle babies or is this cost/time prohibitive in the long run?

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  2 роки тому

      We only hand milk a ewe to get colostrum for the lamb. After that, it just isn't practical nor would she let you do it every few hours for 3 months. They have to go on milk replacer if it can't be adopted or raised by their own mom. We figure one bottle baby drinks one bag of milk replacer which currently costs $90/bag. Plus hours and hours of labour.

    Given sufolks sre prolific milkers are suffolks used to milk comnercially for human supply?
    What products are made from Suffolk milk?
    Is there sufficient interest in their wool to make sheep skins commercially?

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  2 роки тому +4

      There are milk breeds that are used specifically for milking. They are smaller than Suffolks and are specialized for the job. Commercially, wool is barely a viable product for any breed at the moment unfortunately. It is all about the meat with most sheep and who knows where that will be in the future either!

    Is there any other method than CIDR for Suffolk to bread out of season?
